Most probable flows for Kunita SDEs

We identify most probable flows for Kunita Brownian motions, i.e. stochastic flows with Eulerian noise and deterministic drifts. Such stochastic processes appear for example in fluid dynamics and shape analysis modelling coarse scale deterministic dynamics together with fine-grained noise. We treat this infinite dimensional problem by equipping the underlying domain with a Riemannian metric originating from the noise. The resulting most probable flows are compared with the non-perturbed deterministic flow, both analytically and experimentally by integrating the equations with various choice of noise structures.

H-type foliations

With a view toward sub-Riemannian geometry, we introduce and study H-type foliations. These structures are natural generalizations of K-contact geometries which encompass as special cases K-contact manifolds, twistor spaces, 3K contact manifolds and H-type groups. Under an horizontal Ricci curvature lower bound, we prove on those structures sub-Riemannian diameter upper bounds and first eigenvalue estimates for the sub-Laplacian. Then, using a result by Moroianu-Semmelmann, we classify the H-type foliations that carry a parallel horizontal Clifford structure. Finally, we prove an horizontal Einstein property and compute the horizontal Ricci curvature of those spaces in codimension more than 2.

Most probable paths for anisotropic Brownian motions on manifolds

Brownian motion on manifolds with non-trivial diffusion coefficient can be constructed by stochastic development of Euclidean Brownian motions using the fiber bundle of linear frames. We provide a comprehensive study of paths for such processes that are most probable in the sense of Onsager-Machlup, however with path probability measured on the driving Euclidean processes. We obtain both a full characterization of the resulting family of most probable paths, reduced equation systems for the path dynamics where the effect of curvature is directly identifiable, and explicit equations in special cases, including constant curvature surfaces where the coupling between curvature and covariance can be explicitly identified in the dynamics. We show how the resulting systems can be integrated numerically and use this to provide examples of most probable paths on different geometries and new algorithms for estimation of mean and infinitesimal covariance.

Affine connections and curvature in sub-Riemannian geometry

We introduce a new approach for computing curvature of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Curvature is here meant as symplectic invariants of Jacobi curves of geodesics, as introduced by Zelenko and Li. We describe how they can be expressed using a compatible affine connection and induced tensors, without any restriction on our sub-Riemannian manifold or the choice of connection. In particular, we obtain a universal Bonnet-Myers theorem of Riemannian type. We also give universal formulas for the canonical horizontal frame along each geodesic and an algorithm for computing the curvature in general. Several examples are included to demonstrate the theory.

Functional inequalities on path space of sub-Riemannian manifolds and applications

For sub-Riemannian manifolds with a chosen complement, we first establish the derivative formula and integration by parts formula on path space with respect to a natural gradient operator. By using these formulae, we then show that upper and lower bounds of the horizontal Ricci curvature correspond to functional inequalities on path space analogous to what has been established in Riemannian geometry by Aaron Naber, such as gradient inequalities, log-Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.

Radial processes for sub-Riemannian Brownian motions and applications

We study the radial part of sub-Riemannian Brownian motion in the context of totally geodesic foliations. Itô's formula is proved for the radial processes associated to Riemannian distances approximating the Riemannian one. We deduce very general stochastic completeness criteria for the sub-Riemannian Brownian motion. In the context of Sasakian foliations and H-type groups, one can push the analysis further, and taking advantage of the recently proved sub-Laplacian comparison theorems one can compare the radial processes for the sub-Riemannian distance to one-dimensional model diffusions. As a geometric application, we prove Cheng's type estimates for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the sub-Riemannian metric balls, a result which seems to be new even in the Heisenberg group.

Submersions, Hamiltonian systems and optimal solutions to the rolling manifolds problem

Given a submersion $π:Q \to M$ with an Ehresmann connection $\mathcal{H}$, we describe how to solve Hamiltonian systems on $M$ by lifting our problem to $Q$. Furthermore, we show that all solutions of these lifted Hamiltonian systems can be described using the original Hamiltonian vector field on $M$ along with a generalization of the magnetic force. This generalized force is described using the curvature of $\mathcal{H}$ along with a new form of parallel transport of covectors vanishing on $\mathcal{H}$. Using the Pontryagin maximum principle, we apply this theory to optimal control problems $M$ and $Q$ to get results on normal and abnormal extremals. We give a demonstration of our theory by considering the optimal control problem of one Riemannian manifold rolling on another without twisting or slipping along curves of minimal length.

Curvature-dimension inequalities on sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations, Part I

We give a generalized curvature-dimension inequality connecting the geometry of sub-Riemannian manifolds with the properties of its sub-Laplacian. This inequality is valid on a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations. We give a geometric interpretation of the invariants involved in the inequality. Using this inequality, we obtain a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian. This inequality also lays the foundation for proving several powerful results in Part~II.

Curvature-dimension inequalities on sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations, Part II

Using the curvature-dimension inequality proved in Part~I, we look at consequences of this inequality in terms of the interaction between the sub-Riemannian geometry and the heat semigroup $P_t$ corresponding to the sub-Laplacian. We give bounds for the gradient, entropy, a Poincaré inequality and a Li-Yau type inequality. These results require that the gradient of $P_t f$ remains uniformly bounded whenever the gradient of $f$ is bounded and we give several sufficient conditions for this to hold.

Riemannian and Sub-Riemannian geodesic flows

In the present paper we show that the geodesic flows of a sub-Riemannian metric and that of a Riemannian extension commute if and only if the extended metric is parallel with respect to a certain connection. This helps us to describe the geodesic flow of sub-Riemannian metrics on totally geodesic Riemannian submersions. As a consequence we can characterize sub-Riemannian geodesics as the horizontal lifts of projections of Riemannian geodesics.

Controllability of rolling without twisting or slipping in higher dimensions

We describe how the dynamical system of rolling two $n$-dimensional connected, oriented Riemannian manifolds $M$ and $\hat M$ without twisting or slipping, can be lifted to a nonholonomic system of elements in the product of the oriented orthonormal frame bundles belonging to the manifolds. By considering the lifted problem and using properties of the elements in the respective principal Ehresmann connections, we obtain sufficient conditions for the local controllability of the system in terms of the curvature tensors and the sectional curvatures of the manifolds involved. We also give some results for the particular cases when $M$ and $\hat M$ are locally symmetric or complete.

Sub-Riemannian geometry on infinite-dimensional manifolds

We generalize the concept of sub-Riemannian geometry to infinite-dimensional manifolds modeled on convenient vector spaces. On a sub-Riemannian manifold $M$, the metric is defined only on a sub-bundle $\calH$ of the tangent bundle $TM$, called the horizontal distribution. Similarly to the finite-dimensional case, we are able to split possible candidates for minimizing curves into two categories: semi-rigid curves that depend only on $\calH$, and normal geodesics that depend both on $\calH$ itself and on the metric on $\calH$. In this sense, semi-rigid curves in the infinite-dimensional case generalize the notion of singular curves for finite dimensions. In particular, we study the case of regular Lie groups. As examples, we consider the group of sense-preserving diffeomorphisms $\Diff S^1$ of the unit circle and the Virasoro-Bott group with their respective horizontal distributions chosen to be the Ehresmann connections with respect to a projection to the space of normalized univalent functions. In these cases we prove controllability and find formulas for the normal geodesics with respect to the pullback of the invariant Kählerian metric on the class of normalized univalent functions. The geodesic equations are analogues to the Camassa-Holm, Huter-Saxton, KdV, and other known non-linear PDE.

Sub-Riemannian structures corresponding to Kählerian metrics on the universal Teichmueller space and curve

We consider the group of sense-preserving diffeomorphisms $\Diff S^1$ of the unit circle and its central extension, the Virasoro-Bott group, with their respective horizontal distributions chosen to be Ehresmann connections with respect to a projection to the smooth universal Teichmüller space and the universal Teichmüller curve associated to the space of normalized univalent functions. We find formulas for the normal geodesics with respect to the pullback of the invariant Kählerian metrics, namely, the Velling-Kirillov metric on the class of normalized univalent functions and the Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmüller space. The geodesic equations are sub-Riemannian analogues of the Euler-Arnold equation and lead to the CLM, KdV, and other known non-linear PDE.

Geometric conditions for the existence of an intrinsic rolling

We give a complete answer to the question of when two curves in two different Riemannian manifolds can be seen as trajectories of rolling one manifold on the other without twisting or slipping. We show that up to technical hypotheses, a rolling along these curves exists if and only if the geodesic curvatures of each curve coincide. By using the anti-developments of the curves, which we claim can seen of as a generalization of the geodesic curvatures, we are able to extend the result to arbitrary absolutely continuous curves. For a manifold of constant sectional curvature rolling on itself, two such curves can only differ by an isometry. In the case of surfaces, we give conditions for when loops in the manifolds lift to loops in the configuration space of the rolling.

An intrinsic formulation of the rolling manifolds problem

We present an intrinsic formulation of the kinematic problem of two $n-$dimensional manifolds rolling one on another without twisting or slipping. We determine the configuration space of the system, which is an $\frac{n(n+3)}2-$dimensional manifold. The conditions of no-twisting and no-slipping are decoded by means of a distribution of rank $n$. We compare the intrinsic point of view versus the extrinsic one. We also show that the kinematic system of rolling the $n$-dimensional sphere over $\mathbb R^n$ is controllable. In contrast with this, we show that in the case of $SE(3)$ rolling over $\mathfrak{se}(3)$ the system is not controllable, since the configuration space of dimension 27 is foliated by submanifolds of dimension 12.
