Hessian heat kernel estimates and Calderón-Zygmund inequalities on complete Riemannian manifolds

We address some fundamental questions concerning geometric analysis on Riemannian manifolds. It has been asked whether the $L^p$-Calderón-Zygmund inequalities extend to a reasonable class of non-compact Riemannian manifolds without the assumption of a positive injectivity radius. In the present paper, we give a positive answer for $1<p<2$ under the natural assumption of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. For $p>2$, we complement the study in Güneysu-Pigola (2015) and derive sufficient geometric criteria for the validity of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality by adding Kato class bounds on the Riemann curvature tensor and the covariant derivative of Ricci curvature. Probabilistic tools, like Hessian formulas and Bismut type representations for heat semigroups, play a significant role throughout the proofs.

Exponential contraction in Wasserstein distance on static and evolving manifolds

In this article, exponential contraction in Wasserstein distance for heat semigroups of diffusion processes on Riemannian manifolds is established under curvature conditions where Ricci curvature is not necessarily required to be non-negative. Compared to the results of Wang (2016), we focus on explicit estimates for the exponential contraction rate. Moreover, we show that our results extend to manifolds evolving under a geometric flow. As application, for the time-inhomogeneous semigroups, we obtain a gradient estimate with an exponential contraction rate under weak curvature conditions, as well as uniqueness of the corresponding evolution system of measures.

Exponential integrability and exit times of diffusions on sub-Riemannian and metric measure spaces

In this article we derive moment estimates, exponential integrability, concentration inequalities and exit times estimates for canonical diffusions in two settings each beyond the scope of Riemannian geometry. Firstly, we consider sub-Riemannian limits of Riemannian foliations. Secondly, we consider the non-smooth setting of $\mathrm{RCD}^*(K,N)$ spaces. In each case the necessary ingredients are an Itô formula and a comparison theorem for the Laplacian, for which we refer to the recent literature. As an application, we derive pointwise Carmona-type estimates on eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators.

Functional inequalities on path space of sub-Riemannian manifolds and applications

For sub-Riemannian manifolds with a chosen complement, we first establish the derivative formula and integration by parts formula on path space with respect to a natural gradient operator. By using these formulae, we then show that upper and lower bounds of the horizontal Ricci curvature correspond to functional inequalities on path space analogous to what has been established in Riemannian geometry by Aaron Naber, such as gradient inequalities, log-Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.

Radial processes for sub-Riemannian Brownian motions and applications

We study the radial part of sub-Riemannian Brownian motion in the context of totally geodesic foliations. Itô's formula is proved for the radial processes associated to Riemannian distances approximating the Riemannian one. We deduce very general stochastic completeness criteria for the sub-Riemannian Brownian motion. In the context of Sasakian foliations and H-type groups, one can push the analysis further, and taking advantage of the recently proved sub-Laplacian comparison theorems one can compare the radial processes for the sub-Riemannian distance to one-dimensional model diffusions. As a geometric application, we prove Cheng's type estimates for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the sub-Riemannian metric balls, a result which seems to be new even in the Heisenberg group.

Characterization of pinched Ricci curvature by functional inequalities

In this article, functional inequalities for diffusion semigroups on Riemannian manifolds (possibly with boundary) are established, which are equivalent to pinched Ricci curvature, along with gradient estimates, $L^p$-inequalities and log-Sobolev inequalities. These results are further extended to differential manifolds carrying geometric flows. As application, it is shown that they can be used in particular to characterize general geometric flow and Ricci flow by functional inequalities.

Spectral gap on Riemannian path space over static and evolving manifolds

In this article, we continue the discussion of Fang-Wu (2015) to estimate the spectral gap of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator on path space over a Riemannian manifold of pinched Ricci curvature. Along with explicit estimates we study the short-time asymptotics of the spectral gap. The results are then extended to the path space of Riemannian manifolds evolving under a geometric flow. Our paper is strongly motivated by Naber's recent work (2015) on characterizing bounded Ricci curvature through stochastic analysis on path space.

Curvature-dimension inequalities on sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations, Part I

We give a generalized curvature-dimension inequality connecting the geometry of sub-Riemannian manifolds with the properties of its sub-Laplacian. This inequality is valid on a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations. We give a geometric interpretation of the invariants involved in the inequality. Using this inequality, we obtain a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian. This inequality also lays the foundation for proving several powerful results in Part~II.

Curvature-dimension inequalities on sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations, Part II

Using the curvature-dimension inequality proved in Part~I, we look at consequences of this inequality in terms of the interaction between the sub-Riemannian geometry and the heat semigroup $P_t$ corresponding to the sub-Laplacian. We give bounds for the gradient, entropy, a Poincaré inequality and a Li-Yau type inequality. These results require that the gradient of $P_t f$ remains uniformly bounded whenever the gradient of $f$ is bounded and we give several sufficient conditions for this to hold.

A stochastic approach to the harmonic map heat flow on manifolds with time-dependent Riemannian metric

We first prove stochastic representation formulae for space-time harmonic mappings defined on manifolds with evolving Riemannian metric. We then apply these formulae to derive Liouville type theorems under appropriate curvature conditions. Space-time harmonic mappings which are defined globally in time correspond to ancient solutions to the harmonic map heat flow. As corollaries, we establish triviality of such ancient solutions in a variety of different situations.

Entropy and lowest eigenvalue on evolving manifolds

In this note we determine the first two derivatives of the classical Boltzmann-Shannon entropy of the conjugate heat equation on general evolving manifolds. Based on the second derivative of the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy, we construct Perelman's F and W entropy in abstract geometric flows. Monotonicity of the entropies holds when a technical condition is satisfied. This condition is satisfied on static Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, for Hamilton's Ricci flow, List's extended Ricci flow, Müller's Ricci flow coupled with harmonic map flow and Lorentzian mean curvature flow when the ambient space has nonnegative sectional curvature. Under the extra assumption that the lowest eigenvalue is differentiable along time, we derive an explicit formula for the evolution of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with potential in the abstract setting.

An entropy formula for the heat equation on manifolds with time-dependent metric, application to ancient solutions

We introduce a new entropy functional for nonnegative solutions of the heat equation on a manifold with time-dependent Riemannian metric. Under certain integral assumptions, we show that this entropy is non-decreasing, and moreover convex if the metric evolves under super Ricci flow (which includes Ricci flow and fixed metrics with nonnegative Ricci curvature). As applications, we classify nonnegative ancient solutions to the heat equation according to their entropies. In particular, we show that a nonnegative ancient solution whose entropy grows sublinearly on a manifold evolving under super Ricci flow must be constant. The assumption is sharp in the sense that there do exist nonconstant positive eternal solutions whose entropies grow exactly linearly in time. Some other results are also obtained.

Equivalent Harnack and Gradient Inequalities for Pointwise Curvature Lower Bound

By using a coupling method, an explicit log-Harnack inequality with local geometry quantities is established for (sub-Markovian) diffusion semigroups on a Riemannian manifold (possibly with boundary). This inequality as well as the consequent $L^2$-gradient inequality, are proved to be equivalent to the pointwise curvature lower bound condition together with the convexity or absence of the boundary. Some applications of the log-Harnack inequality are also introduced.

The differentiation of hypoelliptic diffusion semigroups

Basic derivative formulas are presented for hypoelliptic heat semigroups and harmonic functions extending earlier work in the elliptic case. Emphasis is placed on developing integration by parts formulas at the level of local martingales. Combined with the optional sampling theorem, this turns out to be an efficient way of dealing with boundary conditions, as well as with finite lifetime of the underlying diffusion. Our formulas require hypoellipticity of the diffusion in the sense of Malliavin calculus (integrability of the inverse Malliavin covariance) and are formulated in terms of the derivative flow, the Malliavin covariance and its inverse. Finally some extensions to the nonlinear setting of harmonic mappings are discussed.
