Bilinear forms, Schur multipliers, complete boundedness and duality

Grothendieck's inequalities for operators and bilinear forms imply some factorization results for complex m x n matrices. Based on the theory of operator spaces and completely bounded mappings we present norm optimal versions of these results and two norm optimal factorization results related to the Schur product. We show that the spaces of respectively bilinear forms and Schur multipliers are conjugate duals to each other with respect to their completely bounded norms.

Norm optimal factorizations of scalar and block matrices

For an $m \times n$ complex matrix $X$ of rank $r$ with Schur multiplier $S_X$ we show that there exist an $ r \times m $ complex matrix $L$ and an $ r\times n $ complex matrix $R$ such that $X = L^*R$ and $\|S_X\|\, =\, \|\mathrm{diag} (L^*L) \|^{\frac{1}{2}} \| \mathrm{diag} (R^*R) \| ^{\frac{1}{2}},$ and the norm condition is optimal. Let the completely bounded norm of the bilinear form $B_X$ induced by $X$ on $(\mathbb{C}^m, \|.\|_\infty) \times (\mathbb{C}^n, \|.\|_\infty)$ be denoted $\|B_X\|_{cb},$ then $X$ has a factorization $ X = Δ(η)^* C Δ(ξ)$ with $η$ in $\mathbb{C}^m,$ $ξ$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the outer factors are diagonal operators with $\|ξ\|_2 = \|η\|_2=1 $ and $C$ has operator norm equal to $\|B_X\|_{cb},$ and the norm condition is optimal. A generalization to operator valued Schur block multipliers is presented too.

C*-dynamical rapid decay

Some well known results by Haagerup, Jolissaint and de la Harpe may be extended to the setting of a reduced crossed product of a C*-algebra A by a discrete group $G.$ We show that for many discrete groups, which include Gromov's hyperbolic groups and finitely generated discrete groups of polynomial growth, an inequality of the form $$\|X\| \leq C \sqrt{\sum_{g \in G} (1+|g|)^4 \|X_g\|^2 } $$ holds for any finitely supported operator $X$ in the reduced crossed product.

Unbounded expectations to some von Neumann algebras

For any injective von Neumann algebra R and any discrete, countable group G, which acts by *-automorphisms on R, we construct an idempotent mapping of an ultra-weakly dense subspace of B(H) onto the reducerd crossed product von Neumann algebra, such that it is R-bimodular and satisfies some nice relations with respect to positivity. In the case of an amenable group our unbounded expectation turns into a usual conditional expectation of norm 1.

Commutator inequalities via Schur products

For a self-adjoint unbounded operator D on a Hilbert space H, a bounded operator y on H and some complex Borel functions g(t) we establish inequalities of the type ||[g(D),y]|| \leq A|||y|| + B||[D,y]|| + ...+ X|[D, [D,...[D, y]...]]||. The proofs take place in a space of infinite matrices with operator entries, and in this setting it is possible to approximate the matrix associated to [g(D), y] by the Schur product of a matrix approximating [D,y] and a scalar matrix. A classical inequality of Bennett on the norm of Schur products may then be applied to obtain the results.

Higher Weak Derivatives and Reflexive Algebras of Operators

Let D be a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space H and x a bounded operator on H. We say that x is n-times weakly D-differentiable, if for any pair of vectors a, b from H the function < exp(itD)x exp(-itD) a, b> is n-times differentiable. We give several characterizations of this property, among which one is original. The results are used to show, that for a von Neumann algebra M on H, the sub-algebra of n-times weakly D-differentiable operators has a representation as a reflexive algebra of operators on a bigger Hilbert space.

Kadison-Kastler stable factors

A conjecture of Kadison and Kastler from 1972 asks whether sufficiently close operator algebras in a natural uniform sense must be small unitary perturbations of one another. For $n\geq 3$ and a free ergodic probability measure preserving action of $SL_n(\mathbb Z)$ on a standard nonatomic probability space $(X,μ)$, write $M=((L^\infty(X,μ)\rtimes SL_n(\mathbb Z))\,\overline{\otimes}\, R$, where $R$ is the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor. We show that whenever $M$ is represented as a von Neumann algebra on some Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and $N\subseteq\mathcal B(\mathcal H)$ is sufficiently close to $M$, then there is a unitary $u$ on $\mathcal H$ close to the identity operator with $uMu^*=N$. This provides the first nonamenable class of von Neumann algebras satisfying Kadison and Kastler's conjecture. We also obtain stability results for crossed products $L^\infty(X,μ)\rtimesΓ$ whenever the comparison map from the bounded to usual group cohomology vanishes in degree 2 for the module $L^2(X,μ)$. In this case, any von Neumann algebra sufficiently close to such a crossed product is necessarily isomorphic to it. In particular, this result applies when $Γ$ is a free group.

Type II_1 factors satisfying the spatial isomorphism conjecture

This paper addresses a conjecture of Kadison and Kastler that a von Neumann algebra M on a Hilbert space H should be unitarily equivalent to each sufficiently close von Neumann algebra N and, moreover, the implementing unitary can be chosen to be close to the identity operator. This is known to be true for amenable von Neumann algebras and in this paper we describe new classes of non-amenable factors for which the conjecture is valid. These are based on tensor products of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with crossed products of abelian algebras by suitably chosen discrete groups.

Spectral triples and the geometry of fractals

For each K-homolgy element of the Sierpinski gasket we construct a spectral triple which will generate that element. We show that there must be certain limits on the choice of the K-homology element if the geometric properties of the gasket shall be recoverable from that spectral triple. For a big subgroup of the K-homology group we show that our spectral triples will recover the metric, the dimension and the Hausdorff measure on the gaket.

Perturbations of C*-algebraic invariants

Kadison and Kastler introduced a metric on the set of all C$^*$-algebras on a fixed Hilbert space. In this paper structural properties of C$^*$-algebras which are close in this metric are examined. Our main result is that the property of having a positive answer to Kadison's similarity problem transfers to close C$^*$-algebras. In establishing this result we answer questions about closeness of commutants and tensor products when one algebra satisfies the similarity property. We also examine $K$-theory and traces of close C$^*$-algebras, showing that sufficiently close algebras have isomorphic Elliott invariants when one algebra has the similarity property.

Perturbations of nuclear C*-algebras

Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all C*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear C*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.
