Free curves and fundamental groups

We show that klt Fano varieties and certain lc Fano varieties contain free higher-genus curves in their smooth loci. Our methods also allow us to find free curves on varieties in positive characteristic and on quasiprojective varieties, under a natural positivity condition on the tangent bundle. We then use the existence of free curves to deduce finiteness of the fundamental group of the smooth locus in these settings. The paper includes an appendix by de Jong that establishes the Künneth formula for tame étale fundamental groups.

Restrictions on rational surfaces lying in very general hypersurfaces

We study rational surfaces on very general Fano hypersurfaces in Pn\mathbb{P}^n, with an eye toward unirationality. We prove that given any fixed family of rational surfaces, a very general hypersurface of degree dd sufficiently close to nn and nn sufficiently large will admit no maps from surfaces in that family. In particular, this shows that for such hypersurfaces, any rational curve in the space of rational curves must meet the boundary. We also prove that for any fixed ratio αα, a very general hypersurface in Pn\mathbb{P}^n of degree dd sufficiently close to nn will admit no maps from a surface satisfying H2≥αHKH^2 \geq αHK, where HH is the pullback of the hyperplane class from Pn\mathbb{P}^n and KK is the canonical bundle on the surface.

Clustered families and applications to Lang-type conjectures

We introduce and classify 1-clustered families of linear spaces in the Grassmannian G(k−1,n)\mathbb{G}(k-1,n) and give applications to Lang-type conjectures. Let X⊂PnX \subset \mathbb{P}^n be a very general hypersurface of degree dd. Let ZLZ_L be the locus of points contained in a line of XX. Let Z2Z_2 be the locus of points on XX that are swept out by lines that meet XX in at most 22 points. We prove that 1) If d≥3n+22d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2}, then XX is algebraically hyperbolic outside ZLZ_L. 2) If d≥3n2d \geq \frac{3n}{2}, XX contains lines but no other rational curves 3) If d≥3n+32d \geq \frac{3n+3}{2}, then the only points on XX that are rationally Chow zero equivalent to points other than themselves are contained in Z2Z_2. 4) If d≥3n+22d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2} and a relative Green-Griffiths-Lang Conjecture holds, then the exceptional locus for XX is contained in Z2Z_2.

Effective bounds on ampleness of cotangent bundles

We prove that a general complete intersection of dimension nn, codimension cc and type d1,…,dcd_1, \dots, d_c in PN\mathbb{P}^N has ample cotangent bundle if c≥2n−2c \geq 2n-2 and the did_i's are all greater than a bound that is O(1)O(1) in NN and quadratic in nn. This degree bound substantially improves the currently best-known super-exponential bound in NN by Deng, although our result does not address the case n≤c<2n−2n \leq c < 2n-2.

Kontsevich spaces of rational curves on Fano hypersurfaces

We investigate the spaces of rational curves on a general hypersurface. In particular, we show that for a general degree dd hypersurface in Pn\mathbb{P}^n with n≥d+2n \geq d+2, the space M0,0‾(X,e)\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0,0}}(X,e) of degree ee Kontsevich stable maps from a rational curve to XX is an irreducible local complete intersection stack of dimension e(n−d+1)+n−4e(n-d+1)+n-4.

Rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic

We study properties of rational curves on complete intersections in positive characteristic. It has long been known that in characteristic 0, smooth Calabi-Yau and general type varieties are not uniruled. In positive characteristic, however, there are well-known counterexamples to this statement. We will show that nevertheless, a \emph{general} Calabi-Yau or general type complete intersection in projective space is not uniruled. We will also show that the space of complete intersections of degree (d1,⋯ ,dk)(d_1, \cdots, d_k) containing a rational curve has codimension at least ∑i=1kdi−2n+2\sum_{i=1}^k d_i - 2n + 2 in the moduli space of all complete intersections of given multidegree and dimension.

Gröbner Bases and Nullstellensätze for Graph-Coloring Ideals

We revisit a well-known family of polynomial ideals encoding the problem of graph-kk-colorability. Our paper describes how the inherent combinatorial structure of the ideals implies several interesting algebraic properties. Specifically, we provide lower bounds on the difficulty of computing Gröbner bases and Nullstellensatz certificates for the coloring ideals of general graphs. For chordal graphs, however, we explicitly describe a Gröbner basis for the coloring ideal, and provide a polynomial-time algorithm.
