Stability and cohomology of kernel bundles on projective space

In this paper, we study the cohomology of vector bundles on projective space defined as kernels or cokernels of general maps $V_1 \to V_2$, where the $V_i$ are direct sums of line bundles or certain exceptional bundles. We prove an asymptotic cohomology vanishing theorem. We characterize the stability of general Steiner bundles on projective space. We also give a criterion for a Steiner bundle to be ample.

Stability of Normal Bundles of Space Curves

In this paper, we prove that the normal bundle of a general Brill-Noether space curve of degree $d$ and genus $g \geq 2$ is stable if and only if $(d,g) \not\in \{ (5,2), (6,4) \}$. When $g\leq1$ and the characteristic of the ground field is zero, it is classical that the normal bundle is strictly semistable. We show that this fails in characteristic $2$ for all rational curves of even degree.

Clustered families and applications to Lang-type conjectures

We introduce and classify 1-clustered families of linear spaces in the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(k-1,n)$ and give applications to Lang-type conjectures. Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a very general hypersurface of degree $d$. Let $Z_L$ be the locus of points contained in a line of $X$. Let $Z_2$ be the locus of points on $X$ that are swept out by lines that meet $X$ in at most $2$ points. We prove that 1) If $d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2}$, then $X$ is algebraically hyperbolic outside $Z_L$. 2) If $d \geq \frac{3n}{2}$, $X$ contains lines but no other rational curves 3) If $d \geq \frac{3n+3}{2}$, then the only points on $X$ that are rationally Chow zero equivalent to points other than themselves are contained in $Z_2$. 4) If $d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2}$ and a relative Green-Griffiths-Lang Conjecture holds, then the exceptional locus for $X$ is contained in $Z_2$.

Effective bounds on ampleness of cotangent bundles

We prove that a general complete intersection of dimension $n$, codimension $c$ and type $d_1, \dots, d_c$ in $\mathbb{P}^N$ has ample cotangent bundle if $c \geq 2n-2$ and the $d_i$'s are all greater than a bound that is $O(1)$ in $N$ and quadratic in $n$. This degree bound substantially improves the currently best-known super-exponential bound in $N$ by Deng, although our result does not address the case $n \leq c < 2n-2$.

Effective cones of cycles on blow-ups of projective space

In this paper, we study the cones of higher codimension (pseudo)effective cycles on point blow-ups of projective space. We determine bounds on the number of points for which these cones are generated by the classes of linear cycles, and for which these cones are finitely generated. Surprisingly, we discover that for (very) general points, the higher codimension cones behave better than the cones of divisors. For example, for the blow-up $X_r^n$ of $\mathbb P^n$, $n>4$, at $r$ very general points, the cone of divisors is not finitely generated as soon as $r> n+3$, whereas the cone of curves is generated by the classes of lines if $r \leq 2^n$. In fact, if $X_r^n$ is a Mori Dream Space then all the effective cones of cycles on $X_r^n$ are finitely generated.

The nef cone of the moduli space of sheaves and strong Bogomolov inequalities

Let (X,H) be a polarized, smooth, complex projective surface, and let v be a Chern character on X with positive rank and sufficiently large discriminant. In this paper, we compute the Gieseker wall for v in a slice of the stability manifold of X. We construct explicit curves parameterizing non-isomorphic Gieseker stable sheaves that become S-equivalent along the wall. As a corollary, we conclude that if there are no strictly semistable sheaves of character v, the Bayer-Macri divisor associated to the wall is a boundary nef divisor on the moduli space of sheaves M_H(v). We recover previous results for the projective plane and K3 surfaces, and illustrate applications to higher Picard rank surfaces with an example on a quadric surface.

Weak Brill-Noether for rational surfaces

A moduli space of sheaves satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf in the moduli space has no cohomology. Goettsche and Hirschowitz prove that on the projective plane every moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves of rank at least two and Euler characteristic zero satisfies weak Brill-Noether. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for weak Brill-Noether to hold on rational surfaces. We completely characterize Chern characters on Hirzebruch surfaces for which weak Brill-Noether holds. We also prove that on a del Pezzo surface of degree at least 4 weak Brill-Noether holds if the first Chern class is nef.

Dense PGL-orbits in products of Grassmannians

In this paper, we find some necessary and sufficient conditions on the dimension vector $\underline{\bf{d}} = (d_1,..., d_k; n)$ so that the diagonal action of $\mathbb{P}GL(n)$ on $\prod_{i=1}^k Gr(d_i;n)$ has a dense orbit. Consequently, we obtain some algorithms for finding dense and sparse dimension vectors and classify dense dimension vectors with small length or size. We also characterize the dense dimension vectors of the form $(d,d,..., d; n)$.

Equivariant Ulrich bundles on flag varieties

In this paper, we study equivariant vector bundles on partial flag varieties arising from Schur functors. We show that a partial flag variety with three or more steps does not admit an Ulrich bundle of this form with respect to the minimal ample class. We classify Ulrich bundles of this form on two-step flag varieties F(2,n;n+1), F(2,n;n+2), F(k,k+1;n), and F(k,k+2;n). We give a conjectural description of the two-step flag varieties which admit such Ulrich bundles. Our results provide counterexamples to conjectures by Costa and Miro-Roig.

Fano manifolds of index n-2 and the cone conjecture

The Morrison--Kawamata Cone Conjecture predicts that the action of the automorphism group on the effective nef cone and the action of the pseudo-automorphism group on the effective movable cone of a klt Calabi-Yau pair have rational, polyhedral fundamental domains. In a previous paper, we proved the conjecture for certain blowups of Fano manifolds of index n-1. In this paper, we consider the Morrison--Kawamata conjecture for blowups of Fano manifolds of index n-2.

We classify Ulrich bundles of this form on two-step flag varieties F(1,n-1;n), F(2,n-1;n), F(2,n-2;n), F(k,k+1;n) and F(k,k+2;n). We give a conjectural description of the two-step flag varieties which admit such Ulrich bundles.

The ample cone of moduli spaces of sheaves on the plane

Fix a Chern character of a stable sheaf on the plane. Assume either the rank is at most 6 or the rank and first Chern class are coprime and the discriminant is sufficiently large. We use recent results of Bayer and Macri on Bridgeland stability to compute the ample cone of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves with the given Chern character. We recover earlier results, such as those by Stromme and Yoshioka, as special cases.

The effective cone of the moduli space of sheaves on the plane

We compute the cone of effective divisors on any moduli space of semistable sheaves on the plane. The computation hinges on finding a good resolution of a general stable sheaf. This resolution is determined by Bridgeland stability and arises from a well-chosen Beilinson spectral sequence. The existence of a good choice of spectral sequence depends on remarkable number-theoretic properties of the slopes of exceptional bundles.

Interpolation, Bridgeland stability and monomial schemes in the plane

Given a zero-dimensional scheme Z, the higher-rank interpolation problem asks for the classification of slopes of vector bundles cohomologically orthogonal to the ideal sheaf of Z. In this paper, we solve this problem for all zero-dimensional monomial schemes in the projective plane. As a corollary, we obtain detailed information on the stable base loci of divisors on the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane. We prove the correspondence between walls in the Bridgeland stability manifold and walls in the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone conjectured by Arcara-Bertram-Coskun-Huizenga for monomial schemes. We determine the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of ideal sheaves of monomial schemes for suitable Bridgeland stability conditions and, as a consequence, obtain a new resolution better suited for cohomology computations than other standard resolutions such as the minimal free resolution.

Fano manifolds of index n-1 and the cone conjecture

The Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture predicts that the actions of the automorphism group on the effective nef cone and the pseudo-automorphism group on the effective movable cone of a klt Calabi-Yau pair $(X, Δ)$ have finite, rational polyhedral fundamental domains. Let $Z$ be an $n$-dimensional Fano manifold of index $n-1$ such that $-K_Z = (n-1) H$ for an ample divisor $H$. Let $Γ$ be the base locus of a general $(n-1)$-dimensional linear system $V \subset |H|$. In this paper, we verify the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for the blow-up of $Z$ along $Γ$.

The Minimal Model Program for the Hilbert Scheme of Points on P^2 and Bridgeland Stability

In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly determine the walls in both interpretations and describe the corresponding flips and divisorial contractions.

Singularities of generalized Richardson varieties

Richardson varieties play an important role in intersection theory and in the geometric interpretation of the Littlewood-Richardson Rule for flag varieties. We discuss three natural generalizations of Richardson varieties which we call projection varieties, intersection varieties, and rank varieties. In many ways, these varieties are more fundamental than Richardson varieties and are more easily amenable to inductive geometric constructions. In this paper, we study the singularities of each type of generalization. Like Richardson varieties, projection varieties are normal with rational singularities. We also study in detail the singular loci of projection varieties in Type A Grassmannians. We use Kleiman's Transversality Theorem to determine the singular locus of any intersection variety in terms of the singular loci of Schubert varieties. This is a generalization of a criterion for any Richardson variety to be smooth in terms of the nonvanishing of certain cohomology classes which has been known by some experts in the field, but we don't believe has been published previously.
