A noncommutative martingale convexity inequality

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful semifinite normal weight $ϕ$ and $\mathcal{N}$ be a von Neumann subalgebra of $\mathcal{M}$ such that the restriction of $ϕ$ to $\mathcal{N}$ is semifinite and such that $\mathcal{N}$ is invariant by the modular group of $ϕ$. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be the weight preserving conditional expectation from $\mathcal{M}$ onto $\mathcal{N}$. We prove the following inequality: \[\|x\|_p^2\ge\bigl \|\mathcal{E}(x)\bigr\|_p^2+(p-1)\bigl\|x-\mathcal{E}(x)\bigr\|_p^2, \qquad x\in L_p(\mathcal{M}),1<p\le2,\] which extends the celebrated Ball-Carlen-Lieb convexity inequality. As an application we show that there exists $\varepsilon_0>0$ such that for any free group $\mathbb{F}_n$ and any $q\ge4-\varepsilon_0$, \[\|P_t\|_{2\to q}\le1\quad\Leftrightarrow\quad t\ge\log{\sqrt{q-1}},\] where $(P_t)$ is the Poisson semigroup defined by the natural length function of $ \mathbb{F}_n$.

Higher order extension of Löwner's theory: Operator $k$-tone functions

The new notion of operator/matrix $k$-tone functions is introduced, which is a higher order extension of operator/matrix monotone and convex functions. Differential properties of matrix $k$-tone functions are shown. Characterizations, properties, and examples of operator $k$-tone functions are presented. In particular, integral representations of operator $k$-tone functions are given, generalizing familiar representations of operator monotone and convex functions.

Noncommutative de Leeuw theorems

Let H be a subgroup of some locally compact group G. Assume H is approximable by discrete subgroups and G admits neighborhood bases which are "almost-invariant" under conjugation by finite subsets of H. Let $m: G \to \mathbb{C}$ be a bounded continuous symbol giving rise to an Lp-bounded Fourier multiplier (not necessarily cb-bounded) on the group von Neumann algebra of G for some $1 \le p \le \infty$. Then, $m_{\mid_H}$ yields an Lp-bounded Fourier multiplier on the group von Neumann algebra of H provided the modular function $Δ_H$ coincides with $Δ_G$ over H. This is a noncommutative form of de Leeuw's restriction theorem for a large class of pairs (G,H), our assumptions on H are quite natural and recover the classical result. The main difference with de Leeuw's original proof is that we replace dilations of gaussians by other approximations of the identity for which certain new estimates on almost multiplicative maps are crucial. Compactification via lattice approximation and periodization theorems are also investigated.

Hypercontractivity for free products

In this paper, we obtain optimal time hypercontractivity bounds for the free product extension of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup acting on the Clifford algebra. Our approach is based on a central limit theorem for free products of spin matrix algebras with mixed commutation/anticommutation relations. With another use of Speicher's central limit theorem, we may also obtain the same bounds for free products of q-deformed von Neumann algebras interpolating between the fermonic and bosonic frameworks. This generalizes the work of Nelson, Gross, Carlen/Lieb and Biane. Our main application yields hypercontractivity bounds for the free Poisson semigroup acting on the group algebra of the free group Fn, uniformly in the number of generators.

Operator biflatness of the $L^1$-algebras of compact quantum groups

We prove that the $L^1$-algebra of any non-Kac type compact quantum group does not satisfy operator biflatness. Since operator amenability implies operator biflatness, this result shows that any co-amenable, non-Kac type compact quantum group gives a counter example to the conjecture that $L^1(\Gb)$ is operator amenable if and only if $\Gb$ is amenable and co-amenable for any locally compact quantum group $\Gb$. The result also implies that the $L^1$-algebra of a locally compact quantum group is operator biprojective if and only if $\Gb$ is compact and of Kac type.

Transfer of Fourier multipliers into Schur multipliers and sumsets in a discrete group

We inspect the relationship between relative Fourier multipliers on noncommutative Lebesgue-Orlicz spaces of a discrete group and relative Toeplitz-Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann-Orlicz classes. Four applications are given: lacunary sets; unconditional Schauder bases for the subspace of a Lebesgue space determined by a given spectrum, that is, by a subset of the group; the norm of the Hilbert transform and the Riesz projection on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent a power of 2; the norm of Toeplitz Schur multipliers on Schatten-von-Neumann classes with exponent less than 1.

Some remarks on noncommutative Khintchine inequalities

Normalized free semi-circular random variables satisfy an upper Khintchine inequality in $L_\infty$. We show that this implies the corresponding upper Khintchine inequality in any noncommutative Banach function space. As applications, we obtain a very simple proof of a well-known interpolation result for row and column operator spaces and, moreover, answer an open question on noncommutative moment inequalities concerning a paper by Bekjan and Chen.

Hypercontractivity on the $q$-Araki-Woods algebras

Extending a work of Carlen and Lieb, Biane has obtained the optimal hypercontractivity of the $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on the $q$-deformation of the free group algebra. In this note, we look for an extension of this result to the type III situation, that is for the $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. We show that hypercontractivity from $L^p$ to $L^2$ can occur if and only if the generator of the deformation is bounded.
