The groupoids of adaptable separated graphs and their type semigroup

Given an adaptable separated graph, we construct an associated groupoid and explore its type semigroup. Specifically, we first attach to each adaptable separated graph a corresponding semigroup, which we prove is an $E^*$-unitary inverse semigroup. As a consequence, the tight groupoid of this semigroup is a Hausdorff étale groupoid. We show that this groupoid is always amenable, and that the type semigroups of groupoids obtained from adaptable separated graphs in this way include all finitely generated conical refinement monoids. The first three named authors will utilize this construction in forthcoming work to solve the Realization Problem for von Neumann regular rings, in the finitely generated case.

The Realization Problem for Finitely Generated Refinement Monoids

We show that every finitely generated conical refinement monoid can be represented as the monoid $\mathcal V(R)$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over a von Neumann regular ring $R$. To this end, we use the representation of these monoids provided by adaptable separated graphs. Given an adaptable separated graph $(E, C)$ and a field $K$, we build a von Neumann regular $K$-algebra $Q_K (E, C)$ and show that there is a natural isomorphism between the separated graph monoid $M(E, C)$ and the monoid $\mathcal V(Q_K (E, C))$.

A Generalised uniqueness theorem and the graded ideal structure of Steinberg algebras

Given an ample, Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, and a unital commutative ring $R$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. First we prove a uniqueness theorem for this algebra and then, when $\mathcal{G}$ is graded by a cocycle, we study graded ideals in $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. Applications are given for two classes of ample groupoids, namely those coming from actions of groups on graphs, and also to groupoids defined in terms of Boolean dynamical systems.

Self-similar graphs, a unified treatment of Katsura and Nekrashevych C*-algebras

Given a graph $E$, an action of a group $G$ on $E$, and a $G$-valued cocycle $ϕ$ on the edges of $E$, we define a C*-algebra denoted ${\cal O}_{G,E}$, which is shown to be isomorphic to the tight C*-algebra associated to a certain inverse semigroup $S_{G,E}$ built naturally from the triple $(G,E,ϕ)$. As a tight C*-algebra, ${\cal O}_{G,E}$ is also isomorphic to the full C*-algebra of a naturally occurring groupoid ${\cal G}_{tight}(S_{G,E})$. We then study the relationship between properties of the action, of the groupoid and of the C*-algebra, with an emphasis on situations in which ${\cal O}_{G,E}$ is a Kirchberg algebra. Our main applications are to Katsura algebras and to certain algebras constructed by Nekrashevych from self-similar groups. These two classes of C*-algebras are shown to be special cases of our ${\cal O}_{G,E}$, and many of their known properties are shown to follow from our general theory.

Purely infinite crossed products by endomorphisms

We study the crossed product $C^*$-algebra associated to injective endomorphisms, which turns out to be equivalent to study the crossed product by the dilated autormorphism. We prove that the dilation of the Bernoulli $p$-shift endomorphism is topologically free. As a consequence, we have a way to twist any endomorphism of a $\D$-absorbing $C^*$-algebra into one whose dilated automorphism is essentially free and have the same $K$-theory map than the original one. This allows us to construct purely infinite crossed products $C^*$-algebras with diverse ideal structures.

Simple Cuntz-Pimsner rings

Necessary and sufficient conditions for when every non-zero ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring contains a non-zero graded ideal, when a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is simple, and when every ideal in a relative Cuntz-Pimsner ring is graded, are given. A "Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem" for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings is also given and condition (L) and condition (K) for relative Cuntz-Pimsner rings are introduced.

The structure of crossed products by endomorphisms

We describe simplicity of the Stacey crossed product A\times_β\N in terms of conditions of the endomorphism β. Then, we use a characterization of the graph C*-algebras C*(E) as the Stacey crossed product C*(E)^γ\times_{β_E}\N to study its ideal properties, in terms of the (non-classical) C*-dynamical system (C*(E)^γ, β_E). Finally, we give sufficient conditions for the Stacey crossed product A\times_β\N being a purely infinite simple C*-algebra.
