A deep learning approach for predicting multiple observables in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We develop a neural network model, based on the processes of high-energy heavy-ion collisions, to study and predict several experimental observables in Au+Au collisions. We present a data-driven deep learning framework for predicting multiple bulk observables in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. A single neural network is trained exclusively on experimental measurements of charged-particle pseudorapidity density distributions, transverse-momentum spectra and elliptic flow coefficients over a broad range of collision energies and centralities. The network architecture is inspired by the stages of a heavy-ion collision, from the quark-gluon plasma to chemical and kinetic freeze-out, and employs locally connected hidden layers and a structured input design that encodes basic geometric and kinematic features of the system. We demonstrate that these physics-motivated choices significantly improve test performance compared to purely fully connected baselines. The trained model is then used to predict the above observables at collision energies not yet explored experimentally at RHIC, and the results are validated using the energy dependence of the total charged-particle multiplicity per participant pair as well as comparisons to a CLVisc hydrodynamic calculation with TRENTo initial conditions. Our findings indicate that such physics-guided neural networks can serve as efficient surrogates to fill critical data gaps at RHIC and to support further phenomenological studies of QGP properties.

Parton splitting scales of reclustered large-radius jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

We carry out the first theoretical investigation on yields and the hardest parton splitting of large-radius jets reclustered from small radius ($R=0.2$) anti-$k_t$ jets in Pb+Pb collisions, and confront them with the recent ATLAS measurements. The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model is employed for jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in the hot-dense medium. We demonstrate that, with their complex structures, the medium suppression of the reclustered large radius jets at $R=1$ is larger than that of inclusive $R=0.4$ jets defined conventionally. The large radius jet constituents are reclustered with the $k_t$ algorithm to obtain the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$, which characterizes the transverse momentum scale for the hardest splitting in the jet. The large-radius jet production as a function of the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ of the hardest parton splitting is overall suppressed in Pb+Pb relative to p+p collisions due to the reduction of jets yields. A detailed analyses show that the alterations of jet substructures in Pb+Pb also make significant contribution to the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$. Numerical results for the medium modifications of the jet splitting angle $ΔR_{12}$ and the splitting fraction $z$ are also presented.

Phenomenological study of the anisotropic quark matter in the 2-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

With the two flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model we carry out a phenomenological study on the chiral phase structure, mesonic properties and transport properties in a momentum-space anisotropic quark matter. To calculate transport coefficients we have utilized the kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation, where the momentum anisotropy is embedded in the estimation of both distribution function and the relaxation time. It is shown that an increase of the anisotropy parameter $ξ$ may results in a catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking. The critical endpoint (CEP) is shifted to smaller temperatures and larger quark chemical potentials as $ξ$ increases, the impact of momentum anisotropy on temperature of CEP is almost the same as that on the quark chemical potential of CEP. The meson masses and the associated decay widths also exhibit a significant $ξ$ dependence. It is observed that the temperature behavior of scaled shear viscosity $η/T^3$ and scaled electrical conductivity $σ_{el}/T$ exhibit a similar dip structure, with the minima of both $η/T^3$ and $σ_{el}/T$ shifting toward higher temperatures with increasing $ξ$. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Seebeck coefficient $S$ decreases when temperature goes up and its sign is positive, indicating the dominant carriers for converting the temperature gradient to the electric field are up-quarks. The Seebeck coefficient $S$ is significantly enhanced with a large $ξ$ for the temperature below the critical temperature.

Probing the initial longitudinal density profile and electromagnetic field in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with heavy quarks

Heavy quarks are valuable probes of the electromagnetic field and the initial condition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Within an improved Langevin model that is coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, we explore the origin of the directed flow coefficient ($v_1$) of heavy mesons and their decay leptons, and its splitting ($Δv_{1}$) between opposite charges. We find that while the rapidity dependence of the heavy flavor $v_1$ is mainly driven by the titled energy density profile of the QGP with respect to the longitudinal direction at the RHIC energy, it is dominated by the electromagnetic field at the LHC energy. The $Δv_{1}$ serves as a novel probe of the spacetime evolution profile of the electromagnetic field. Our results of $D$ mesons and their decay electrons are consistent with the available data at RHIC and LHC, and our predictions on the heavy flavor decay muons can be further tested by future measurements.

Quenching of jets tagged with $W$ bosons in high-energy nuclear collisions

We carry out the first detailed calculations of jet production associated with $W$ gauge bosons in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In our calculations, the production of $W$+jet in p+p collisions as a reference is obtained by Sherpa, which performs next-to-leading-order matrix element calculations matched to the resummation of parton shower simulations, while jet propagation and medium response in the quark-gluon plasma are simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We provide numerical predictions on seven observables of $W$+jet production with jet quenching in Pb+Pb collisions: the medium modification factor for the tagged jet cross sections $I_{AA}$, the distribution in invariant mass between the two leading jets in $N_{jets}\ge 2$ events $m_{jj}$, the missing $p_T$ or the vector sum of the lepton and jet transverse momentum $|\vec{p}_T^{Miss}|$, the summed scalar $p_T$ of all the jets in an event $S_T$, transverse momentum imbalance $x_{jW}$, average number of jets per $W$ boson $R_{jW}$, and azimuthal angle between the $W$ boson and jets $Δϕ_{jW}$. The distinct nuclear modifications of these seven observables in Pb+Pb relative to that in p+p collisions are presented with detailed discussions.

Imaging nuclear modifications on parton distributions with triple-differential dijet cross sections in proton-nucleus collisions

Dijet production in proton-nucleus ($p$A) collisions at the LHC provides invaluable information on the underlying parton distributions in nuclei, especially the gluon distributions. Triple-differential dijet cross sections enable a well-controlled kinematic scan (over momentum fraction $x$ and probing scale $Q^2$) of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), i.e., $f^\textrm{A}_i(x,Q^2)$. In this work, we study several types of triple-differential cross sections for dijet production in proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-lead ($p$Pb) collisions at the LHC, to next-to-leading order within the framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD). Four sets of nPDF parametrizations, EPPS16, nCTEQ15, TUJU19, and nIMParton16 are employed in the calculations for $p$Pb collisions. We show that the observable nuclear modification factor $R_{p\textrm{Pb}}$ of such cross sections can serve as a nice image of the nuclear modifications on parton distributions, quantified by the ratio $r^{\textrm{A}}_i(x,Q^2)\!=\!f^\textrm{A,proton}_i(x,Q^2)/f^\textrm{proton}_i(x,Q^2)$. Considerable differences among the $R_{p\textrm{Pb}}$ predicted by the four nPDF sets can be observed and intuitively understood. Future measurements of such observables are expected to not only constrain the nPDF parametrizations, but also help confirm various nuclear effects, e.g., shadowing, anti-shadowing, EMC, and Fermi motion in different regions of $x$ and their variations with probing scale $Q^2$.

Extracting the jet transport coefficient of cold nuclear matter from world data

We present the first global extraction of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter within the framework of higher-twist expansion. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive $e$-A deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and in Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in $p$-A collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in DIS. The results of this work provide the first quantitative evidence for the universality and non-trivial scale dependence of the medium transport property, similar to that for nucleon structure as encoded in the standard parton distribution functions. We expect the extracted scale dependence of $\hat q$ for cold nuclear matter can be extended to precisely identify the fundamental property of quark gluon plasma.

In-medium effect on the thermodynamics and transport coefficients in van der Waals hadron resonance gas

An extension of the van der Waals hadron resonance gas (VDWHRG) model which includes in-medium thermal modification of hadron masses, the TVDWHRG model, is considered in this paper. Based on the 2+1 flavor Polyakov Linear Sigma Model(PLSM) and the scaling mass rule for hadrons we obtain the temperature behavior of all hadron masses for different fixed baryon chemical potentials $μ_{B}$. We calculate various thermodynamic observables at $μ_{B}=0$ GeV in TVDWHRG model. An improved agreement with the lattice data by TVDWHRG model in the crossover region ($T\sim 0.16-0.19$ GeV) is observed as compared to those by VDWHRG and Ideal HRG (IHRG) models. We further discuss the effects of in-medium modification of hadron masses and VDW interactions on the transport coefficients such as shear viscosity ($η$), scaled thermal ($λ/T^{2}$) and electrical ($σ_{el}/T$ conductivities in IHRG model at different $μ_{B}$, by utilizing quasi-particle kinetic theory with relaxation time approximation.

Jet charge in high energy nuclear collisions

Averaged jet charge characterizes the electric charge for the initiating parton, and provides a powerfull tool to distinguish quark jets from gluon jets. In this paper, we give the first prediction for the medium modification of averaged jet charge in heavy-ion collision at the LHC, where jet productions in p+p collisions are simulated by PYTHIA6, and parton energy loss in QGP are calculated with two Monte Carlo models of jet quenching: PYQUEN and JEWEL. We found that the distribution of averaged jet charge is significantly suppressed by initial state isospin effects due to the participants of neutrons with zero electric charge during nuclear collisions. Considerable enhancement of averaged jet charge in central Pb+Pb collisions relative to peripheral collisions is observed, since jet quenching effect is more pronounced in central collisions. Distinct feature of averaged jet charge between quark and gluon jets, together with the sensitivity of medium modifications on jet charge to flavor dependence of parton energy loss, could be very useful to discriminate the energy loss pattern between quark and gluon jets in heavy-ion collisions.

Radial distribution of charm quarks in jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor physics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is a promising and active area to study the mass dependence of the "jet quenching" effects both at the RHIC and the LHC. In this talk, we present the first theoretical study on the $D^0$ meson radial distributions relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, where a nice agreement of our results with experimental data is observed. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA as input and includes elastic (collisional) and inelastic (radiative) in-medium interaction of heavy flavor jet. We find that, at low $D^0$ meson $p_T$, the radial distribution significantly shifts to larger radius indicating a strong diffusion effect, and the diffusion effects decrease quickly with $p_T$ ,which is consistent with the recent CMS measurements. We demonstrate that the angular deviation of charm quarks is sensitive to $D_s$ but not $\hat{q}$, which may provide new constrains on the collisional and radiative heavy quark energy loss.

Radial profile of heavy quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

In high energy nuclear collisions, heavy flavor tagged jets are useful hard probes to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this talk, we present the first theoretical prediction of the $D^0$ meson radial distributions in jets relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV, it shows a nice agreement with the available experimental data. The in-medium jet evolution in the study is described by a Monte Carlo transport model which has been incorporated with the initial events as input provided by the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA. In such evolution process, both elastic and inelastic parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium are taken into account. Within this same simulation framework, we predict different modification patterns of the radial profile of charm and bottom quarks in jets in Pb+Pb collisions: jet quenching effect will lead the charm quarks diffuse to lager radius while lead the bottom quarks distributed closer to jet axis.

Transverse Momentum Balance and Angular Distribution of $b\bar{b}$ Dijets in Pb+Pb collisions

The productions of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets in Pb+Pb collisions have been investigated by considering the heavy quark and the light quark in-medium evolution simultaneously. The initial hard processes of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets productions are described by a next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) event generator SHERPA which can be well-matched with the experimental data in p+p collisions. The framework combines the Langevin transport model to describe the evolution of the bottom quark also its collisional energy loss and the higher-twist description to consider the radiative energy loss of both the bottom and light quarks. We compare the theoretical simulation of inclusive jet and inclusive b-jet $R_{\rm AA}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with the experimental data, and then present the theoretical simulation of the momentum balance of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV with the recent CMS data for the first time. A similar trend as that in inclusive dijets has been observed in $b\bar{b}$ dijets, the production distribution is shifted to smaller $x_J$ due to the jet quenching effect. At last, the prediction of the normalized azimuthal angle distribution of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV has been reported. The medium induced energy loss effect of the $b\bar{b}$ dijets will overall suppress its production, but the same side ($Δϕ\to 0$ region) suffers more energy loss than away side ($Δϕ\to π$ region), therefore lead to the suppression on the same side and the enhancement on the away side in the normalized azimuthal angle distribution in A+A collisions.

Two-loop HTL-resummed thermodynamics for N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We compute the two-loop hard-thermal-loop (HTL) resummed thermodynamic potential for N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM). Our final result is manifestly gauge-invariant and was renormalized using only simple vacuum energy, gluon mass, scalar mass, and quark mass counter terms. The HTL mass parameters m_D, M_D, and m_q are then determined self-consistently using a variational prescription which results in a set of coupled gap equations. Based on this, we obtain the two-loop HTL-resummed thermodynamic functions of N=4 SYM. We compare our final result with known results obtained in the weak- and strong-coupling limits. We also compare to previously obtained approximately self-consistent HTL resummations and Padé approximants. We find that the two-loop HTL resummed results for the scaled entropy density is a quantitatively reliable approximation to the scaled entropy density for 0 <= lambda <~ 2 and is in agreement with previous approximately self-consistent HTL resummation results for lambda <~ 6.

A global extraction of the jet transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter

Within the framework of the generalized QCD factorization formalism, we perform the first global analysis of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive electron-nucleus deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in deep inelastic scattering, comprising a total of 215 data points from 8 data sets. For the first time, we clarify quantitatively the universality and probing scale dependence of the nuclear medium property as encoded in $\hat q$. We expect that the determined parametrization of $\hat q$ in cold nuclear matter will have significant impact on precise identification of the transport property of hot dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Productions of $η$, $ρ^0$ and $ϕ$ at large transverse momentum in Heavy ion Collisions

The suppression of the productions of the $η$ meson in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and its ratio of $η/π^0$ are computed theoretically in the framework of the perturbative QCD(pQCD) to confront the experimental data which matches well. We explore how the hadron production ratios as$η/π^0$ would further disclose the informations of the production suppressions due to the energy loss of the energetic jet that propagating though the QGP medium. Also, we present our further studies on vector mesons such as $ρ^0$ and $ϕ$ within the same framework. The theoretical predictions based on pQCD are thus firstly given which give a decent description on the experimental measurements. It paved the way to the uniformly understanding of the strong suppression of single hadron productions at large transverse momentum which is a convincing evidence of the jet quenching effect.

Study of W and Z Boson Production in Proton-Lead Collisions at the LHC with KP Nuclear Parton Distributions

We present a detailed study of the (pseudo)rapidity distributions of massive vector bosons produced in p+p and p+Pb collisions at the LHC within the next-to-leading order approximation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. In particular, we discuss the impact of different cold nuclear matter effects on this process using the nuclear parton distributions calculated from the microscopic model developed by Kulagin and Petti (KP). This model was successfully applied to study nuclear effects in the deep-inelastic scattering and the Drell-Yan reactions off various (fixed) target nuclei. Results are compared with the recent CMS and ATLAS p+Pb data with \sqrt{s}=5.02 TeV per two colliding nucleons. We found an excellent agreement between the predictions of the KP model and the recent LHC data on W+- and Z0 production in p+Pb collisions, including the differential cross sections, the forward-backward asymmetries, and W charge asymmetry. We also discuss the sensitivity of the current and future LHC data to the underlying mechanisms responsible for the nuclear modifications of parton density functions.

$η$ meson production of high-energy nuclear collisions at NLO

The transverse momentum spectrum of $η$ meson in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied at the next-to-leading-order (NLO) within the perturbative QCD, where the jet quenching effect in the QGP is incorporated with the effectively medium-modified $η$ fragmentation functions using the higher-twist approach. We show that the theoretical simulations could give nice descriptions of PHENIX data on $η$ meson in both $\rm p+p$ and central $\rm Au+Au$ collisions at the RHIC, and also provide numerical predictions of $η$ spectra in central $\rm Pb+Pb$ collisions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$~TeV at the LHC. The ratios of $η/π^0$ in $\rm p+p$ and in central $\rm Au+Au$ collisions at $200$~GeV are found to overlap in a wide $p_T$ region, which matches well the measured ratio $η/ π^0$ by PHENIX. We demonstrate that, at the asymptotic region when $p_{T} \rightarrow \infty$ the ratios of $η/π^{0}$ in both $\rm Au+Au$ and $\rm p+p$ are almost determined only by quark jets fragmentation and thus approach to the one in $e^{+} e^{-}$ scattering; in addition, the almost identical gluon (quark) contribution fractions to $η$ and to $π$ result in a rather moderate variation of $η/π^{0}$ distribution at intermediate and high $p_T$ region in $\rm A+A$ relative to that in $\rm p+p$; while a slightly higher $η/π^{0}$ at small $p_T$ in $\rm Au+Au$ can be observed due to larger suppression of gluon contribution fraction to $π^{0}$ as compared to the one to $η$. The theoretical prediction for $η/ π^0$ at the LHC has also been presented.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

Probing Shadowed Nuclear Sea with Massive Gauge Bosons in the Future Heavy-Ion Collisions

The production of the massive bosons $Z^0$ and $W^{\pm}$ could provide an excellent tool to study cold nuclear matter effects and the modifications of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) relative to parton distribution functions (PDFs) of a free proton in high energy nuclear reactions at the LHC as well as in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) with much higher center-of mass energies available in the future colliders. In this paper we calculate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the vector boson and their nuclear modification factors in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=63$TeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=39$TeV in the framework of perturbative QCD by utilizing three parametrization sets of nPDFs: EPS09, DSSZ and nCTEQ. It is found that in heavy-ion collisions at such high colliding energies, both the rapidity distribution and the transverse momentum spectrum of vector bosons are considerably suppressed in wide kinematic regions with respect to p+p reactions due to large nuclear shadowing effect. We demonstrate that in the massive vector boson productions processes with sea quarks in the initial-state may give more contributions than those with valence quarks in the initial-state, therefore in future heavy-ion collisions the isospin effect is less pronounced and the charge asymmetry of W boson will be reduced significantly as compared to that at the LHC. Large difference between results with nCTEQ and results with EPS09 and DSSZ is observed in nuclear modifications of both rapidity and $p_T$ distributions of $Z^0$ and $W$ in the future HIC.

Productions of $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$ in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC

The productions of massive gauge bosons, $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$, in heavy-ion reactions at the LHC, provide an excellent tool to study the cold nuclear matter effects in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this paper we investigate $Z^0$ and $W^+/W^-$ productions in p+Pb and Pb+Pb at the LHC, at NLO and NNLO with DYNNLO incorporating the nuclear PDFs (nPDFs) parametrization sets EPS09 and DSSZ, within the framework of perturbative QCD. The numerical simulations of the transverse momentum spectra, rapidity dependence, and related nuclear modification factors for $Z^0$ and $W$ particles, as well as the charge asymmetry for W boson, are provided and tested against the latest experimental data. It is found that the theoretical results with EPS09 and DSSZ nPDFs can give good descriptions of the recent data on $Z^0$ and $W^{\pm}$ particles in p+Pb and Pb+Pb within the experimental error bars, though some differences between results with EPS09 and DSSZ can be observed, especially in the rapidity dependence of the $Z^0$ yield. Theoretical predictions for future measurements on $Z^0$ and $W$ in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC are also provided.

Quantifying jet transport properties via large $p_T$ hadron production

Nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for large $p_T$ single hadron is studied in a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model with medium-modified fragmentation functions (mFFs) due to jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The energy loss of the hard partons in the QGP is incorporated in the mFFs which utilize two most important parameters to characterize the transport properties of the hard parton jets: the jet transport parameter $\hat q_{0}$ and the mean free path $λ_{0}$, both at the initial time $τ_0$. A phenomenological study of the experimental data for $R_{AA}(p_{T})$ is performed to constrain the two parameters with simultaneous $χ^2/{\rm d.o.f}$ fits to RHIC as well as LHC data. We obtain for energetic quarks $\hat q_{0}\approx 1.1 \pm 0.2$ GeV$^2$/fm and $λ_{0}\approx 0.4 \pm 0.03$ fm in central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, while $\hat q_{0}\approx 1.7 \pm 0.3$ GeV$^2$/fm, and $λ_{0}\approx 0.5 \pm 0.05$ fm in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. Numerical analysis shows that the best fit favors a multiple scattering picture for the energetic jets propagating through the bulk medium, with a moderate averaged number of gluon emissions. Based on the best constraints for $λ_{0}$ and $τ_0$, the estimated value for the mean-squared transverse momentum broadening is moderate which implies that the hard jets go through the medium with small reflection.

Momentum imbalance of isolated photon-tagged jet production at RHIC and LHC

In collisions of ultra-relativistic nuclei, photon-tagged jets provide a unique opportunity to compare jet production and modification due to parton shower formation and propagation in strongly-interacting matter at vastly different center-of-mass energies. We present first results for the cross sections of jets tagged by an isolated photon to ${\cal O}(α_{\rm em} α_s^2)$ in central Au+Au reactions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at RHIC and central Pb+Pb reactions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV at LHC. We evaluate the increase in the transverse momentum imbalance of the observed $γ$+jet state, induced by the dissipation of the parton shower energy due to strong final-state interactions. Theoretical predictions to help interpret recent and upcoming experimental data are presented.

${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ analysis of inclusive jet and di-jet production in heavy ion reactions at the Large Hadron Collider

Jets physics in heavy ion reactions is an important new area of active research at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that paves the way for novel tests of QCD multi-parton dynamics in dense nuclear matter. At present, perturbative QCD calculations of hard probes in elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions can be consistently combined with the effects of the nuclear medium up to $ {\cal O}(α_s^3) $. While such accuracy is desirable but not necessary for leading particle tomography, it is absolutely essential for the new jet observables. With this motivation, we present first results and predictions to $ {\cal O}(α_s^3) $ for the recent LHC lead-lead (Pb+Pb) run at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon-nucleon pair. Specifically, we focus on the suppression of the single and double inclusive jet cross sections. Our analysis includes not only final-state inelastic parton interactions in the QGP, but also initial-state cold nuclear matter effects and an estimate of the non-perturbative hadronization corrections. We demonstrate how an enhanced di-jet asymmetry in central Pb+Pb reactions at the LHC, recently measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, can be derived from these results. We show quantitatively that a fraction of this enhancement may be related to the ambiguity in the separation between the jet and the soft background medium and/or the diffusion of the parton shower energy away from the jet axis through collisional processes. We point to a suite of measurements that can help build a consistent picture of parton shower modification in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Dijet Productions in Relativistic Heavy-ion Reactions at LHC

We investigate the cold nuclear matter(CNM) effects on dijet productions in high-energy nuclear collisions at LHC with the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. The nuclear modifications for dijet angular distributions, dijet invariant mass spectra, dijet transverse momentum spectra and dijet momentum imbalance due to CNM effects are calculated by incorporating EPS, EKS, HKN and DS param-etrization sets of parton distributions in nucleus . It is found that dijet angular distributions and dijet momentum imbalance are insensitive to the initial-state CNM effects and thus provide optimal tools to study the final-state hot QGP effects such as jet quenching. On the other hand, the invariant mass spectra and the transverse momentum spectra of dijet are generally enhanced in a wide region of the invariant mass or transverse momentum due to CNM effects with a feature opposite to the expected suppression because of the final-state parton energy loss effect in the QGP. The difference of EPS, EKS, HKN and DS parametrization sets of nuclear parton distribution functions is appreciable for dijet invariant mass spectra and transverse momentum spectra at p+Pb collisions, and becomes more pronounced for those at Pb+Pb reactions.

Jet probes of QCD matter: single jets and dijets in heavy-ion collisions

Modifications of jets in the existence of a hot and dense QCD medium have recently attracted a lot of attentions. In this talk, we demonstrate how jet-medium interactions change the behavior of jets by offering examples of inclusive jet and dijet productions at $ {\cal O}(α_s^3)$ in heavy ion collisions including initial-state cold nuclear effects and especially the final-state parton energy loss effect. The suppression of inclusive jet spectrum varying with jet radii and a flatter dijet momentum imbalance as compared to those in hadron-hadron collisions are observed in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Jet physics in relativistic heavy ion collisions, which combines perturbative QCD jet production with quark and gluon energy loss and in-medium parton shower modification, has emerged as a powerful tool to probe the properties of strongly-interacting matter formed in high-energy nuclear reactions. We present selected results for the modification of jet cross sections and related observables in the ambiance of hot and/or dense nuclear medium. Transport Model Studies of the Baryon-Rich Quark-Gluon Plasma formed in Heavy Ion Collisions

Heavy ion collisions in the low energy run at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma that has a finite baryon chemical potential, allowing thus the possibility to study the location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram. In this talk, using a multiphase transport model, that includes interactions in both initial partonic and final hadronic matters and the transition between these two phases of matter, we discuss the effects of partonic interactions on observables such as the elliptic flow that have played essential roles in studying the properties of the net baryon free quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions at higher energies at RHIC. Also, we study the effect of density fluctuations due to a first-order transition between the quark-gluon plasma and hadronic matter on fluctuations of hadron mean transverse momentum and produced deuteron number as well as on two-pion correlations. We further discuss the possibility of studying the mechanism of charm energy loss in the baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma and the properties of phi mesons in hot-dense matter produced in these collisions.

Jet tomography of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order

We demonstrate that jet observables are highly sensitive to the characteristics of the vacuum and the in-medium QCD parton showers and propose techniques that exploit this sensitivity to constrain the mechanism of quark and gluon energy loss in strongly-interacting plasmas. As a first example, we calculate the inclusive jet cross section in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$. Theoretical predictions for the medium-induced jet broadening and the suppression of the jet production rate due to cold and hot nuclear matter effects in Au+Au and Cu+Cu reactions at RHIC are presented.

Photon Radiation and Dilepton Production Induced by Rescattering in Strong Interacting Medium

Using the opacity expansion technique we investigate the photon radiation and dilepton production induced by multiple rescattering as energetic parton jet passing through the strong interacting medium. The real photon radiation and dilepton invariant-mass spectrums of the bremsstrahlung contribution from an energetic quark jet are presented. The leading contribution of total energy loss by photon emmision in medium of a higher energy quark jet is found to be proportional to the jet energy and has a linear dependence on the thickness of the nuclear target. The rescattering contribution for the dilepton is important only for small value of the invariant-mass and for the not so fast jet. The contribution fraction of the dilepton induced by rescattering in medium is found to be nearly a constant when the ratio of jet energy to Debye screening mass $E/μ$ is large.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Heavy Quark Energy Loss and Modified Fragmentation Functions

Multiple scattering, induced radiative energy loss and modified fragmentation functions of a heavy quark in nuclear matter are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD. Modified heavy quark fragmentation functions and energy loss are derived in detail with illustration of the mass dependencies of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effects and heavy quark energy loss. Due to the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the nuclear size dependencies of nuclear modification of the heavy quark fragmentation function and heavy quark energy loss are found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss of the heavy quark is also significantly suppressed due to limited cone of gluon radiation imposed by the mass. Medium modification of the heavy quark fragmentation functions is found to be limited to the large $z$ region due to the form of heavy quark fragmentation functions in vacuum.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Beyond Helicity Amplitude Approximation

Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off heavy nuclei is studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD with a complete calculation beyond the helicity amplitude (or soft bremsstrahlung) approximation. Such a calculation gives rise to new corrections to the modified quark fragmentation functions. The effective parton energy loss is found to be reduced by a factor of 5/6 from the result of helicity amplitude approximation.
