Magnetism on the stretched diamond lattice in lanthanide orthotantalates

The magnetic Ln$^{3+}$ ions in the fergusonite and scheelite crystal structures form a distorted or stretched diamond lattice which is predicted to host exotic magnetic ground states. In this study, polycrystalline samples of the fergusonite orthotantalates $M$-LnTaO$_4$ (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) are synthesized and then characterized using powder diffraction and bulk magnetometry and heat capacity. TbTaO$_4$ orders antiferromagnetically at 2.25 K into a commensurate magnetic cell with $\vec{k}=0$, magnetic space group 14.77 ($P2_1$$'/c$) and Tb moments parallel to the $a$-axis. No magnetic order was observed in the other materials studied, leaving open the possibility of exotic magnetic states at $T<2$ K.

Development of the magnetism in the solid solution of the candidate Weyl semimetals Ce$_x$Pr$_{1-x}$AlGe

We investigate the macroscopic and microscopic physical properties of the solid solution of Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$AlGe. The series tunes from CeAlGe with its multi-$\vec{k}$ structure and a major Moment in the ab-plane, to PrAlGe with an easy-c-axis ferromagnetic ground state co-existing with a low density of nanoscale textured magnetic Domain walls. Using AC-, DC-susceptiblity, resistivity, specific heat, muon spin relaxation/rotation and neutron scattering we analyze the magnetic ground state of the series. We provide further evidence supporting our previous claim for spin-glass like properties in pure PrAlGe. With introduction of Pr to CeAlGe the finite magnetic field required to stabilize the topological multi-$\vec{k}$ magnetic phase for $x=0$ becomes suppressed. The crossover between the two end-member ground states occurs in the vicinity of $x=0.3$, a region where we further anticipate the field-induced topological magnetic phase for $x < 0.3$ to become the zero field ground state.

From 3D static order to 2D dynamic correlations in the tetragonal double perovskite Sr2CuWO6

\SCWO is a tetragonal ($I4/m$) double perovskite with diamagnetic W$^{6+}$ (5d$^0$) and (Jahn-Teller-active) Cu$^{2+}$ (3$d^9$) in a rocksalt-ordered arrangement on the B sites, modelling an anisotropic fcc-lattice antiferromagnet with $S=1/2$. We have studied the magnetic structure, dynamics and thermodynamic properties of this material above and below the \Neel{}-ordering transition at $T_{\textrm{N}} = 24$~K. Muon spin relaxation spectroscopy, neutron diffraction and neutron spectroscopy experiments show that the transition at $T_{\textrm{N}}$ on heating is from static 3D type-2 antiferromagnetism to 2D dynamic correlations that remain detectable up to 100~K. Above $T_{\textrm{N}}$ the muon relaxation is described by a compressed exponential decay, revealing a strong correlation between the spin fluctuation rate and the 2D correlation length. The low-temperature muon data and the entropy release around $T_{\textrm{N}}$ as obtained from the heat capacity data point to small magnetic domains, probably of the order of 60~Å. We note that the material behaves more like a quasi-2D square lattice antiferromagnet than could be expected considering its structure only. A possible explanation might lie in the unusual strong spin-orbit-coupled magnetism of the W 5$d$ levels, as the dominant exchange interaction is via the Cu-O-W-O-Cu pathway.

Magnetic Structure and Susceptibility of CoSe$_2$O$_5$: A Low Dimensional Antiferromagnet

CoSe$_2$O$_5$ has a crystal structure consisting of zig-zag chains of edge shared CoO$_6$ octahedra running along the c axis, with the chains separated by Se$_2$O$_5^{2-}$ units. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a transition at 8.5 K to an ordered state. We investigate here the nature of this magnetic ordering using magnetization and specific heat measurements in addition to powder neuttron diffraction. A transition to long-range antiferromagnetic order is found below $T_N$ = 8.5 K as identified by magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetic Bragg reflections, with a propagation vector $\mathbf{k}$ = 0. The magnetic structure shows that the moments align perpendicular to the c-axis, but with the spins canting with respect to the a axis by, alternately, $+8^\circ$ and $-8^\circ$. Interestingly, the low-field magnetic susceptibility does not show the anticipated cusp-like behavior expected for a well-ordered antiferromagnet. When the susceptibility is acquired under field-cooling conditions under a 10 kOe field, the the usual downturn expected for antiferromagnetic ordering is obtained. Heat capacity measurements at low temperatures indicate the presence of gapped behavior with a gap of 6.5 K.

Magnetic superelasticity and inverse magnetocaloric effect in Ni-Mn-In

Applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ alloy in the martensitic state induces a structural phase transition to the austenitic state. This is accompanied by a strain which recovers on removing the magnetic field giving the system a magnetically superelastic character. A further property of this alloy is that it also shows the inverse magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic superelasticity and the inverse magnetocaloric effect in Ni-Mn-In and their association with the first order structural transition is studied by magnetization, strain, and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic field.
