A Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets

In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

Practical targeted learning from large data sets by survey sampling

We address the practical construction of asymptotic confidence intervals for smooth (i.e., path-wise differentiable), real-valued statistical parameters by targeted learning from independent and identically distributed data in contexts where sample size is so large that it poses computational challenges. We observe some summary measure of all data and select a sub-sample from the complete data set by Poisson rejective sampling with unequal inclusion probabilities based on the summary measures. Targeted learning is carried out from the easier to handle sub-sample. We derive a central limit theorem for the targeted minimum loss estimator (TMLE) which enables the construction of the confidence intervals. The inclusion probabilities can be optimized to reduce the asymptotic variance of the TMLE. We illustrate the procedure with two examples where the parameters of interest are variable importance measures of an exposure (binary or continuous) on an outcome. We also conduct a simulation study and comment on its results. keywords: semiparametric inference; survey sampling; targeted minimum loss estimation (TMLE)

Empirical risk minimization for heavy-tailed losses

The purpose of this paper is to discuss empirical risk minimization when the losses are not necessarily bounded and may have a distribution with heavy tails. In such situations, usual empirical averages may fail to provide reliable estimates and empirical risk minimization may provide large excess risk. However, some robust mean estimators proposed in the literature may be used to replace empirical means. In this paper, we investigate empirical risk minimization based on a robust estimate proposed by Catoni. We develop performance bounds based on chaining arguments tailored to Catoni's mean estimator.

Robust estimation of U-statistics

An important part of the legacy of Evarist Giné is his fundamental contributions to our understanding of $U$-statistics and $U$-processes. In this paper we discuss the estimation of the mean of multivariate functions in case of possibly heavy-tailed distributions. In such situations, reliable estimates of the mean cannot be obtained by usual $U$-statistics. We introduce a new estimator, based on the so-called median-of-means technique. We develop performance bounds for this new estimator that generalizes an estimate of Arcones and Giné (1993), showing that the new estimator performs, under minimal moment conditions, as well as classical $U$-statistics for bounded random variables. We discuss an application of this estimator to clustering.
