On the role of the subsidiary fields in the momentum and angular momentum in covariantly quantized QED and QCD

The covariant quantization of QED and QCD requires the introduction of subsidiary gauge-fixing and ghost fields and it is crucial to understand the role of these in the energy-momentum tensor, and in the momentum and angular momentum operators. These issues were studied in \cite{Leader:2011za}, and key results from this study were utilized in the major review of angular momentum in \cite{Leader:2013jra}. Damski \cite{Damski:2021feu} has rightly criticized as incorrect the derivation of certain equations in \cite{Leader:2011za}. We show, however, that the key results of \cite{Leader:2011za} which are utilized in \cite{Leader:2013jra} are unaffected by Damski's criticism.

Sensitivity of strange quark polarization to flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking

The polarized strange quark puzzle concerns the fact that the polarized strange quark density extracted from polarized inclusive deep inelastic scattering data is significantly negative, whereas it is zero or slightly positive when extracted from a combined analysis of polarized semi-inclusive and inclusive deep inelastic data. SU(3) flavor symmetry, which, it is generally accepted, is not an exact symmetry, plays an important role in the inclusive analysis, and all the extracted polarized quark densities depend, to some extent, on the level of symmetry breaking introduced. But by far the most sensitive to the breaking is the strange quark density. In this paper we present a NLO QCD analysis of the world data on polarized inclusive DIS data on protons, neutrons and deuterons, including the final JLAB CLAS/EG1b data on the proton and deuteron, and study the sensitivity of the strange quark polarization to the breaking of flavor SU(3).

Determination of the fragmentation functions from an NLO QCD analysis of the HERMES data on pion multiplicities

An NLO QCD analysis of the final HERMES data on pion multiplicities is presented and a new set of pion fragmentation functions is extracted from the best fit to the data. We have studied the so-called [x,z] and [Q^2,z] presentations of their data, as given by HERMES, which, in principle, should simply be two different ways of presenting the experimental data. We have based our extraction on an excellent fit to the [Q^2,z] presentation of the data. We also draw attention to what appears to be a problem with the [x,z] presentation of the HERMES data.

The end of WHAT nucleon-spin crisis?

Povh and Walcher have written a paper entitled "The end of the nucleon-spin crisis" [arXiv:1603.05884]. But there is no such crisis. What appeared to be a spin crisis in the parton model, 28 years ago, was a consequence of a misinterpretation of the results of the famous European Muon Collaboration experiment on polarized deep inelastic scattering. It would thus seem that Povh and Walcher have invoked a somewhat dubious argument based on hadronic fluctuations of the photon in order to resolve a non-existent problem.

The problem of kinematic mass corrections for unpolarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

Miraculously, target mass corrections for inclusive deep inelastic scattering can be calculated exactly. On the contrary, there does not exist a consistent derivation of kinematic hadron mass corrections for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Recently this has become of topical interest, since there is a significant difference between the measured HERMES and COMPASS pion and kaon multiplicities, which cannot be explained as a consequence of evolution in $Q^2$, and it has been suggested that the difference can be understood if kinematic hadron mass corrections are taken into account. We explain why this argument is incorrect.

Unexpected equality of the quark and gluon Belinfante angular momentum and Canonical angular momentum in the light-cone gauge $A^+=0$, in a spin 1/2 nucleon

A controversy is raging concerning the most physically meaningful definition of quark and gluon angular momentum, a question of importance in understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. There are, in my, opinion, two principal candidates: the Belinfante version, $\bm{J}_{bel}$, which is gauge invariant, and the Canonical version, $ \bm{J}_{can}$, which is non-gauge invariant, but which has a physically intuitive structure. I demonstrate the wholly unexpected result that for quarks in a spin 1/2 nucleon the expectation value of $\bm{J}_{bel}(\textrm{quark})$ is equal to the expectation value of $ \bm{J}_{can}(\textrm{quark})$ taken in the light-cone gauge $A^+=0$, with an analogous result for gluons.

New analysis concerning the strange quark polarization puzzle

The fact that analyses of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering suggest that the polarized strange quark density $Δs(x) + Δ\bar{s}(x)$ is positive in the measured region of Bjorken x, whereas all analyses of inclusive deep inelastic scattering yield significantly negative values of this quantity, is known as the "strange quark polarization puzzle". We have analyzed the world data on inclusive deep inelastic scattering, including the COMPASS 2010 proton data on the spin asymmetries, and for the first time, the new extremely precise JLab CLAS data on the proton and deuteron spin structure functions. Despite allowing in our parametrization, for a possible sign change, our results confirm that the inclusive data yield significantly negative values for the polarized strange quark density.

Resolution of a conflict between Laser and Elementary Particle Physics

The claim some years ago, contrary to all textbooks, that the angular momentum of a photon (and gluon) can be split in a gauge-invariant way into an orbital and spin term, sparked a major controversy in the Particle Physics community. A further cause of upset was the realization that the gluon polarization in a nucleon, a supposedly physically meaningful quantity, corresponds only to the gauge-variant gluon spin derived from Noether's theorem, evaluated in a particular gauge. On the contrary, Laser Physicists have, for decades, been happily measuring physical quantities which correspond to orbital and spin angular momentum evaluated in a particular gauge. This paper reconciles the two points of view.

Tests for Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions in difference cross sections in SIDIS

A major experimental program is presently underway to determine the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, vital for understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. To this end we consider the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity azimuthal asymmetries of the difference cross sections of hadrons with opposite charges in SIDIS reactions with unpolarized and transversely polarized target l+N\to l'+h+X, h=π^\pm, K^\pm, h^\pm. We show that on deuteron target these asymmetries are particularly simple and determine the sum of the valence-quark Q_V=u_V+d_V transverse momentum dependent distributions without any contributions from the strange or other sea-quark functions. At present, data on these asymmetries are presented for the integrated asymmetries i.e. the x_B- and z_h-dependent asymmetries. If data are available in small bins in Q^2, so that Q^2-dependence can be neglected, these expressions simplify dramatically leading to remarkably simple and powerful tests of the simplifying assumptions used in extracting these functions from the data.

Tests of the extraction of the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions in SIDIS reactions

A major experimental program is presently underway worldwide to determine the fundamental non-perturbative functions, the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, which are vital for an understanding of the internal structure of the nucleon. However, at present, many simplifying assumptions are used in extracting these functions from the data. We demonstrate that if the binning of the data in Q^2 is small enough so that Q^2-evolution can be neglected inside a bin, then one can obtain stringent tests of these assumptions. Failure to satisfy these tests implies that the presently extracted non-perturbative functions are unreliable. To this end we consider the measurement of the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity difference asymmetries for hadrons with opposite charges in SIDIS reactions with unpolarized and transversely polarized deuteron and proton targets: l+N\to l'+h+X, h=π^\pm ,K^\pm ,h^\pm. Utilizing only charge and isospin invariance, and applying the above mentioned simplifying assumptions we obtain several testable relations amongst the measured asymmetries. If these tests are satisfied then the measured asymmetries determine two different combinations of the valence-quark transverse momentum dependent distributions, which can be determined separately without any contributions from the strange and other sea-quarks.

Importance of Semi Inclusive DIS Processes in Determining Fragmentation Functions

A NLO QCD analysis of the HERMES and COMPASS data on pion multiplicities is presented. Sets of pion fragmentation functions are extracted from fits to the data and compared with those obtained from other groups before these data were available. The consistency between HERMES and COMPASS data is discussed. We point out a possible inconsistency between the HERMES [x, z] and [Q^2, z] presentations of their data.

Problems with the perturbative QCD interpretation of HERMES data on semi-inclusive lepto-production of pions

A theoretical analysis has been performed of the HERMES semi-inclusive deep inelastic data on the difference between $π^{+}$ and $π^{-}$ multiplicities. It turns out that the application of a standard perturbative QCD analysis, using, as usual, isospin symmetry for the fragmentation functions, leads to a poor description of the deuteron data at small z values. If one allows a breaking of isospin invariance, a good fit to both proton and deuteron data can be achieved for all measured z, but the level of isospin violation, especially at small values of z, is simply not credible. We suspect that the problem is a consequence of using the factorized QCD treatment in a kinematic region where it is unjustified.

A critical assessment of the angular momentum sum rules

There are now five angular momentum relations or sum rules in the literature: the Jaffe, Manohar relation for a longitudinally polarized nucleon, and the Bakker, Leader, Trueman result for the case of transverse polarization; the Ji relation for longitudinal polarization, and the Leader result for transverse polarization, both involving generalized parton distributions; and a new sum rule due to Ji, Xiong and Yuan dealing with the transverse component of the Pauli-Lubanski vector. I discuss these various relations and examine their precise interpretation in the light of the so-called "angular momentum controversy". In particular, I show that the claim of Ji, Xiong and Yuan that their Pauli-Lubanski relation is frame or energy independent is incorrect, and that they have missed an energy dependent term in their expression.

A note on the implications of gauge invariance in QCD

We compare and contrast the implications of gauge invariance for the structure of scattering amplitudes in QED and QCD. We derive the most general analogue for QCD of the famous QED rule that the scattering amplitude must be invariant if the polarization vectors $ε^{μ_j}(k_j)$ of any number of photons undergo the replacement $ ε^{μ_j}(k_j) \rightarrow ε^{μ_j}(k_j) + c \, k_j^{μ_j} $, where $c$ is an arbitrary constant.

A Possible Resolution of the Strange Quark Polarization Puzzle ?

The strange quark polarization puzzle, i.e. the contradiction between the negative polarized strange quark density obtained from analyses of inclusive DIS data and the positive values obtained from combined analyses of inclusive and semi-inclusive SIDIS data using de Florian et. al. (DSS) fragmentation functions, is discussed. To this end the results of a new combined NLO QCD analysis of the polarized inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS data, using the Hirai et. al. (HKNS) fragmentation functions, are presented. It is demonstrated that the polarized strange quark density is very sensitive to the kaon fragmentation functions, and if the set of HKNS fragmentation functions is used, the polarized strange quark density obtained from the combined analysis turns out to be negative and well consistent with values obtained from the pure DIS analyses.

New relation between transverse angular momentum and generalized parton distributions

I derive a rigorous relation between the expectation value of the transverse component of the angular momentum <J_T> of a quark in a transversely polarized nucleon in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions H and E, namely <J_T(quark)> = 1/2M [P_0 \int dx x E_q(x,0,0) + M \int dx x H_q(x,0,0)] where P_0 is the energy of the nucleon and where "quark" implies the sum of quark and antiquark of a given flavor. A similar relation holds for gluons. The result is remarkably similar to Ji's relation for the case of longitudinal polarization. In this revised version, I have rectified some misleading statements, introduced a more precise notation and specified mpre clearly the meaning of the terms in both the Ji and the new tranverse relation.

On the controversy concerning the definition of quark and gluon angular momentum

A major controversy has arisen in QCD as to how to split the total angular momentum into separate quark and gluon contributions, and as to whether the gluon angular momentum can itself be split, in a gauge invariant way, into a spin and orbital part. Several authors have proposed various answers to these questions and offered a variety of different expressions for the relevant operators. I argue that none of these is acceptable and suggest that the canonical expression for the momentum and angular momentum operators is the correct and physically meaningful one. It is then an inescapable fact that the gluon angular momentum operator cannot, in general, be split in a gauge invariant way into a spin and orbital part. However, the projection of the gluon spin onto its direction of motion i.e. its helicity is gauge invariant and is measured in deep inelastic scattering on nucleons. The Ji sum rule, relating the quark angular momentum to generalized parton distributions, though not based on the canonical operators, is shown to be correct, if interpreted with due care. I also draw attention to several interesting aspects of QED and QCD, which, to the best of my knowledge, are not commented upon in the standard textbooks on Field Theory.

Reply to the comment of Huey-Wen Lin and Keh-Fei Liu on "Controversy concerning the definition of quark and gluon angular momentum" by E. Leader (arXiv:1111.0678, PRD 83, 096012 (2011))

Lin and Liu evaluate the nucleon expectation value of the non gauge-invariant canonical quark momentum operator on a lattice, and obtain zero. They conclude that my argument that, despite the non gauge-invariance of the operator, its physical matrix elements \emph{are} gauge-invariant, cannot be correct. I show that their result has no bearing on the question of gauge-invariance, and also point to an amusing lattice paradox.

Determination of Polarized PDFs from a QCD Analysis of Inclusive and Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering Data

A new combined next to leading order QCD analysis of the polarized inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering (DIS) data is presented. In contrast to previous combined analyses, the $1/Q^2$ terms (kinematic - target mass corrections, and dynamic - higher twist corrections) in the expression for the nucleon spin structure function $g_1$ are taken into account. The new COMPASS data are included in the analysis. The impact of the semi-inclusive data on the polarized parton densities (PDFs) and on the higher twist corrections is discussed. The new results for the PDFs are compared to our (Leader, Sidorov, Stamenov) LSS'06 PDFs, obtained from the fit to the inclusive DIS data alone, and to those obtained from the de Florian, Sassot, Stratmann, and Vogelsang global analysis.

QCD Analysis of Polarized Inclusive and Semi-inclusive DIS Data

A new combined NLO QCD analysis of the polarized inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS data is presented. In contrast to previous combined analyses, the 1/Q^2 terms (kinematic - target mass corrections, and dynamic - higher twist corrections) in the expression for the nucleon spin structure function g1 are taken into account. The new COMPASS data are included in the analysis. The impact of the semi-inclusive (SIDIS) data on the polarized parton densities (PDFs) and on the higher twist corrections is demonstrated. The controversial behavior of the polarized strange quark density obtained from the fit to the DIS data alone, and a combined analysis of DIS and SIDIS data is discussed.

Towards a model independent determination of fragmentation functions

We show that the difference cross sections in unpolarized SIDIS e+N\to e+h+X and pp hadron production p+p\to h+X determine, uniquely and in any order in QCD, the two FFs: D_u^{h-\bar h} and D_d^{h-\bar h}, h=π^\pm, K^\pm. If both K^\pm and K_s^0 are measured, then e+e-\to K+X, e+N\to e+K+X and p+p\to K+X yield independent measurements of (D_u-D_d)^{K^+ +K^-}. In a combined fit to K^\pm and K^0_s production data from e+e- collisions, (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} is obtained and compared to conventional parametrizations.

Non-singlets in Semi-inclusive DIS and inclusive e+e- annihilation

We show that non-singlets in semi-inclusive DIS with pi^\pm determine without assumptions Delta u_V, Delta d_V and D_u^{π+ - pi-}. Non-singlets in SIDIS and inclusive e+e- -annihilation with K^\pm determine (s-bar s) and (Delta s-Delta bar s), but an assumption is necessary -- we choose as most natural D_d^{K+ - K-}=0. Measurements with charged K^\pm and neutral K0+bar K0 in semi-inclusive DIS and e+e--annihilation determine D_{u,d,s}^{K+ + K-} without any assumptions and allow tests of LO approximation in QCD.

Role of Positivity Constraints in Determining Polarized Parton Densities

We have re-analyzed the world data on inclusive polarized DIS, in both NLO and LO QCD, including the very precise JLab Hall A neutron data, and have studied the role of positivity constraints, and demonstrated their importance, in determining the strange and gluon densities. We have shown that higher twist corrections are essential in the analysis of the present data on the structure function g1. A consistent QCD analysis is achieved, and results for the polarized parton densities are given in both the MSbare and JET schemes.

On the non-vanishing of the Collins mechanism for single spin asymmetries

The Collins mechanism provides a non-perturbative explanation for the large single spin asymmetries found in hard semi-inclusive reactions involving a transversely polarized nucleon. However, there are seemingly convincing reasons to suspect that the mechanism vanishes, and indeed it does vanish in the naive parton model where a quark is regarded as an essentially 'free' particle. We give an intuitive analysis which highlights the difference between the naive picture and the realistic one, and shows how the Collins mechanism arises when the quark is described as an off-shell particle by a field in interaction. A typographical error is corrected in this version.

A Strategy for the Analysis of Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present a strategy for the systematic extraction of a vast amount of detailed information on polarized parton densities and fragmentation functions from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering l+N -> l+h+X, in both LO and NLO QCD. A method is suggested for estimating the errors involved in the much simpler, and therefore much more attractive, LO analysis. The approach is based upon a novel interplay with data from inclusive DIS and from e+e- -> hX, and leads to a much simplified form of the NLO expressions. No assumptions are made about the equality of any parton densities and the only symmetries utilised are charge conjugation invariance and isotopic spin invariance of strong interactions.

Polarized Parton Densities in the Nucleon

We present a new NLO QCD analysis of the world data on inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering. Comparing to our previous analysis: i) the values of g_A and a_8=3F-D are updated ii) the MRST'99 instead of the MRST'98 parametrization for the input unpolarized parton densities is used and iii) the recent SLAC E155 proton data on the spin asymmetry A1 are included in the analysis. A new set of polarized parton densities is extracted from the data and the sensitivity of the results to different positivity constraints is discussed.

Semi-inclusive π^\pm production - tests for independent fragmentation and for polarized quark densities

We show that measurements of semi-inclusive $π^\pm$ asymmetries on $p$ and $n$ with polarized and unpolarized target and beams allow, without any knowledge of the polarized parton densities 1) to test independent fragmentation and SU(2) symmetry for the polarized sea, and 2) to determine separately the polarized strange and valence quark densities, and the ratio of the fragmentation functions $D_s^{π^+ + π^-}/D_u^{π^+ +π^-}$
