$K$-theory for real $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras

We initiate the study of real $C^*$-algebras associated to higher-rank graphs $Λ$, with a focus on their $K$-theory. Following Kasparov and Evans, we identify a spectral sequence which computes the $\mathcal{CR}$ $K$-theory of $C^*_{\mathbb R} (Λ, γ)$ for any involution $γ$ on $Λ$, and show that the $E^2$ page of this spectral sequence can be straightforwardly computed from the combinatorial data of the $k$-graph $Λ$ and the involution $γ$. We provide a complete description of $K^{CR}(C^*_{\mathbb R}(Λ, γ))$ for several examples of higher-rank graphs $Λ$ with involution.

Irreducibility and monicity for representations of $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras

The representations of a $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$ which arise from $Λ$-semibranching function systems are closely linked to the dynamics of the $k$-graph $Λ$. In this paper, we undertake a systematic analysis of the question of irreducibility for these representations. We provide a variety of necessary and sufficient conditions for irreducibility, as well as a number of examples indicating the optimality of our results. We also explore the relationship between irreducible $Λ$-semibranching representations and purely atomic representations of $C^*(Λ)$. Throughout the paper, we work in the setting of row-finite source-free $k$-graphs; this paper constitutes the first analysis of $Λ$-semibranching representations at this level of generality.

Moves on $k$-graphs preserving Morita equivalence

We initiate the program of extending to higher-rank graphs ($k$-graphs) the geometric classification of directed graph $C^*$-algebras, as completed in the 2016 paper of Eilers, Restorff, Ruiz, and Sorensen [ERRS16]. To be precise, we identify four "moves," or modifications, one can perform on a $k$-graph $Λ$, which leave invariant the Morita equivalence class of its $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$. These moves -- insplitting, delay, sink deletion, and reduction -- are inspired by the moves for directed graphs described by Sorensen [S\o13] and Bates-Pask [BP04]. Because of this, our perspective on $k$-graphs focuses on the underlying directed graph. We consequently include two new results, Theorem 2.3 and Lemma 2.9, about the relationship between a $k$-graph and its underlying directed graph.

Monic representations of finite higher-rank graphs

In this paper we define the notion of monic representation for the $C^*$-algebras of finite higher-rank graphs with no sources, and undertake a comprehensive study of them. Monic representations are the representations that, when restricted to the commutative $C^*$-algebra of the continuous functions on the infinite path space, admit a cyclic vector. We link monic representations to the $Λ$-semibranching representations previously studied by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer, and also provide a universal representation model for nonnegative monic representations.

Twists over étale groupoids and twisted vector bundles

Inspired by recent papers on twisted $K$-theory, we consider in this article the question of when a twist $\mathcal{R}$ over a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ (with unit space a CW-complex) admits a twisted vector bundle, and we relate this question to the Brauer group of $\mathcal{G}$. We show that the twists which admit twisted vector bundles give rise to a subgroup of the Brauer group of $\mathcal{G}$. When $\mathcal{G}$ is an étale groupoid, we establish conditions (involving the classifying space $B\mathcal{G}$ of $\mathcal{G}$) which imply that a torsion twist $\mathcal{R}$ over $\mathcal{G}$ admits a twisted vector bundle.

Wavelets and graph $C^*$-algebras

Here we give an overview on the connection between wavelet theory and representation theory for graph $C^{\ast}$-algebras, including the higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras of A. Kumjian and D. Pask. Many authors have studied different aspects of this connection over the last 20 years, and we begin this paper with a survey of the known results. We then discuss several new ways to generalize these results and obtain wavelets associated to representations of higher-rank graphs. In \cite{FGKP}, we introduced the "cubical wavelets" associated to a higher-rank graph. Here, we generalize this construction to build wavelets of arbitrary shapes. We also present a different but related construction of wavelets associated to a higher-rank graph, which we anticipate will have applications to traffic analysis on networks. Finally, we generalize the spectral graph wavelets of \cite{hammond} to higher-rank graphs, giving a third family of wavelets associated to higher-rank graphs.

Wavelets and spectral triples for fractal representations of Cuntz algebras

In this article we provide an identification between the wavelet decompositions of certain fractal representations of $C^*-$algebras of directed graphs of M. Marcolli and A. Paolucci, and the eigenspaces of Laplacians associated to spectral triples constructed from Cantor fractal sets that are the infinite path spaces of Bratteli diagrams associated to the representations, with a particular emphasis on wavelets for representations of $\mathcal{O}_D$. In particular, in this setting we use results of J. Pearson and J. Bellissard, and A. Julien and J. Savinien, to construct first the spectral triple and then the Laplace Beltrami operator on the associated Cantor set. We then prove that in certain cases, the orthogonal wavelet decomposition and the decomposition via orthogonal eigenspaces match up precisely. We give several explicit examples, including an example related to a Sierpinski fractal, and compute in detail all the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenspaces of the Laplace Beltrami operators for the equal weight case for representations of Cuntz algebras, and in the uneven weight case for certain representations of $\mathcal{O}_2$, and show how the eigenspaces and wavelet subspaces at different levels are related.

$K$-theory and homotopies of 2-cocycles on higher-rank graphs

This paper continues our investigation into the question of when a homotopy $ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ of 2-cocycles on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ gives rise to an isomorphism of the $K$-theory groups of the twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras: $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$ In particular, we build on work by Kumjian, Pask, and Sims to show that if $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{G}_Λ$ is the infinite path groupoid associated to a row-finite higher-rank graph $Λ$ with no sources, and $\{c_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ is a homotopy of 2-cocycles on $Λ$, then $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}_Λ, σ_{c_0})) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}_Λ, σ_{c_1})),$ where $σ_{c_t}$ denotes the 2-cocycle on $\mathcal{G}_Λ$ associated to the 2-cocycle $c_t$ on $Λ$. We also prove a technical result (Theorem 3.3), namely that a homotopy of 2-cocycles on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ gives rise to an upper semi-continuous $C^*$-bundle.

Separable representations, KMS states, and wavelets for higher-rank graphs

Let $Λ$ be a strongly connected, finite higher-rank graph. In this paper, we construct representations of $C^*(Λ)$ on certain separable Hilbert spaces of the form $L^2(X,μ)$, by introducing the notion of a $Λ$-semibranching function system (a generalization of the semibranching function systems studied by Marcolli and Paolucci). In particular, when $Λ$ is aperiodic, we obtain a faithful representation of $C^*(Λ)$ on $L^2(Λ^\infty, M)$, where $M$ is the Perron-Frobenius probability measure on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ recently studied by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. We also show how a $Λ$-semibranching function system gives rise to KMS states for $C^*(Λ)$. For the higher-rank graphs of Robertson and Steger, we also obtain a representation of $C^*(Λ)$ on $L^2(X, μ)$, where $X$ is a fractal subspace of $[0,1]$ by embedding $Λ^{\infty}$ into $[0,1]$ as a fractal subset $X$ of $[0,1]$. In this latter case we additionally show that there exists a KMS state for $C^*(Λ)$ whose inverse temperature is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of $X$. Finally, we construct a wavelet system for $L^2(Λ^\infty, M)$ by generalizing the work of Marcolli and Paolucci from graphs to higher-rank graphs.

$K$-theory and homotopies of 2-cocycles on group bundles

This paper continues the author's program to investigate the question of when a homotopy of 2-cocycles $Ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ induces an isomorphism of the $K$-theory groups of the twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras: $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$ Building on our earlier work, we show that if $π: \mathcal{G} \to M$ is a locally trivial bundle of amenable groups over a locally compact Hausdorff space $M$, a homotopy $Ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ of 2-cocycles on $\mathcal{G} $ gives rise to an isomorphism $K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$

$K$-theory and homotopies of 2-cocycles on transformation groups

This paper constitutes a first step in the author's program to investigate the question of when a homotopy of 2-cocycles $ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ on a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ induces an isomorphism of the $K$-theory groups of the reduced twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras: $K_*(C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*_r(\mathcal{G}, ω_1)).$ Generalizing work of Echterhoff, Lück, Phillips, and Walters from 2010, we show that if $\mathcal{G} = G \ltimes X$ is a second countable locally compact transformation group, then whenever $G$ satisfies the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients, a homotopy $ω= \{ω_t\}_{t \in [0,1]}$ of 2-cocycles on $G \ltimes X$ gives rise to an isomorphism $K_*(C^*_r(G \ltimes X, ω_0)) \cong K_*(C^*_r(G \ltimes X, ω_1)).$
