Ultrastrong coupling between nanoparticle plasmons and cavity photons at ambient conditions

Ultrastrong coupling is a distinct regime of electromagnetic interaction that enables a rich variety of intriguing physical phenomena. Traditionally, this regime has been reached by coupling intersubband transitions of multiple quantum wells, superconducting artificial atoms, or two-dimensional electron gases to microcavity resonators. However, employing these platforms requires demanding experimental conditions such as cryogenic temperatures, strong magnetic fields, and high vacuum. Here, we use plasmonic nanorods array positioned at the antinode of the resonant optical Fabry-Pérot microcavity to reach the ultrastrong coupling (USC) regime at ambient conditions and without the use of magnetic fields. From optical measurements we extract the value of the interaction strength over the transition energy as high as g/ω~0.55, deep in the USC regime, while the nanorods array occupies only ~4% of the cavity volume. Moreover, by comparing the resonant energies of the coupled and uncoupled systems, we indirectly observe up to ~10% modification of the ground-state energy, which is a hallmark of USC. Our results suggest that plasmon-microcavity polaritons are a promising new platform for room-temperature USC realizations in the optical and infrared range.

Tracing the $s_\pm$-symmetry in iron pnictides by controlled disorder

Consecutive proton irradiation of iron pnictides reduces the superconducting transition temperature to decrease monotonically. Our systematic optical THz investigations of Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ thin films reveal, however, that the low-energy superconducting gap is first suppressed, but recovers for higher irradiation doses. At the same time the decrease of the superfluid density with disorder comes to a halt. These observations are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations, which predict a disorder-induced transition of the order parameter from $s_{\pm}$ to $s_{++}$ symmetry. Thereby we solve the longstanding puzzle of the iron pnictides gap symmetry in favor of $s_{\pm}$-symmetry and demonstrate THz spectroscopy as a tool to determine the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter.

Evidence of a subenergy gap in the overdoped regime of Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} thin films from THz Spectroscopy

We measured the terahertz (THz) complex conductivity of Ca doped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} thin films in the frequency range of 0.1 to 3 THz (3 to 100 cm^{-1}) and at a temperature range of 20 to 300 K. The films were measured using both time domain and frequency domain THz methods. We showed evidence for the existence of a sub-gap in overdoped Y_{1-x}Ca_{x}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} samples doped with 5% and 10% Ca. Evidence for the opening of this sub-gap appears as a sharp decrease in the spectrum of the real part of conductivity at frequencies equivalent to a gap energy of 1 meV and is more prominent with increased doping. This decrease in conductivity can be explained by using d-wave pairing symmetry with an imaginary part of is or id_{xy} which suggests node removal.
