Non-Euclidean Crystallographic Rigidity

This paper establishes combinatorial characterisations of forced-symmetric and forced-periodic rigidity (under a fixed lattice) of bar-joint frameworks in non-Euclidean normed planes. In $\ell_q$-planes for $q\in(1,\infty)\backslash\{2\}$, we prove characterisations for forced-periodic rigidity and forced-reflectionally-symmetric rigidity. We also characterise forced-symmetric rigidity in this space with respect to the orientation-reversing wallpaper group $\mathbb{Z}^2\rtimes\mathcal{C}_s$, otherwise known as $pm$ in crystallography. In the $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$-planes, we provide characterisations for forced-periodic rigidity and forced-$\mathbb{Z}^2\rtimes\mathcal{C}_s$-symmetric rigidity. All of these characterisations are proved by inductive constructions involving Henneberg-type graph operations.

Symbol functions for symmetric frameworks

We prove a variant of the well-known result that intertwiners for the bilateral shift on `$\ell^2(Z)$ are unitarily equivalent to multiplication operators on $L^2(T)$. This enables us to unify and extend fundamental aspects of rigidity theory for bar-joint frameworks with an abelian symmetry group. In particular, we formulate the symbol function for a wide class of frameworks and show how to construct generalised rigid unit modes in a variety of new contexts.

The parabolic algebra revisited

The parabolic algebra A_p is the weakly closed algebra on L^2(R) generated by the unitary semigroup of right translations and the unitary semigroup of multiplication by the analytic exponential functions e^{iλx}, λ\geq 0. This algebra is reflexive with an invariant subspace lattice, Lat A_p, which is naturally homeomorphic to the unit disc (Katavolos and Power, 1997). This identification is used here to classify strongly irreducible isometric representations of the partial Weyl commutation relations. The notion of a synthetic subspace lattice is extended from commutative to noncommutative lattices and it is shown that Lat A_p is nonsynthetic relative to the maximal abelian multiplication subalgebra of A_p. Also, operator algebras derived from isometric representations of A_p and from compact perturbations are defined and determined.

The parabolic algebra on Banach spaces

The parabolic algebra was introduced by Katavolos and Power, in 1997, as the operator algebra acting on $L^2(R)$ that is weakly generated by the translation and multiplication semigroups. In particular, they proved that this algebra is reflexive and is equal to the Fourier binest algebra, that is, to the algebra of operators that leave invariant the subspaces of the Volterra nest and its analytic counterpart. We prove that a similar result holds for the corresponding algebras acting on $L^p(R)$, where $1<p<\infty$. It is also shown that the reflexive closures of the Fourier binests on $L^p(R)$ are all order isomorphic for $1 < p < \infty$.

The operator algebra generated by the translation, dilation and multiplication semigroups

The weak operator topology closed operator algebra on $L^2(R)$ generated by the one-parameter semigroups for translation, dilation and multiplication by $exp(iλx), λ\geq 0$, is shown to be a reflexive operator algebra, in the sense of Halmos, with invariant subspace lattice equal to a binest. This triple semigroup algebra, $A_{ph}$, is antisymmetric in the sense that $A_{ph} \cap A_{ph}^*= CI$, it has a nonzero proper weakly closed ideal generated by the finite-rank operators, and its unitary automorphism group is $R$. Furthermore, the 8 choices of semigroup triples provide 2 unitary equivalence classes of operator algebras, with $A_{ph}$ and $A_{ph}^*$ being chiral representatives.
