Solitary wave interactions with a periodic forcing: the extended Korteweg-de Vries framework

The aim of this work is to study numerically the interaction of large amplitude solitary waves with an external periodic forcing using the forced extended Korteweg-de Vries equation (feKdV). Regarding these interactions, we find that a solitary wave can bounce back and forth remaining close to its initial position when the forcing and the solitary wave are near resonant or it can move away from its initial position without reversing their direction. Additionally, we verify that the numerical results agree well within the asymptotic approximation for broad the forcings.

General Initial Value Problem for the Nonlinear Shallow Water Equations: Runup of Long Waves on Sloping Beaches and Bays

We formulate a new approach to solving the initial value problem of the shallow water-wave equations utilizing the famous Carrier-Greenspan transformation [G. Carrier and H. Greenspan, J. Fluid Mech. 01, 97 (1957)]. We use a Taylor series approximation to deal with the difficulty associated with the initial conditions given on a curve in the transformed space. This extends earlier solutions to waves with near shore initial conditions, large initial velocities, and in more complex U-shaped bathymetries; and allows verification of tsunami wave inundation models in a more realistic 2-D setting.

Logistic equation and COVID-19

The generalized logistic equation is used to interpret the COVID-19 epidemic data in several countries: Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey and South Korea. The model coefficients are calculated: the growth rate and the expected number of infected people, as well as the exponent indexes in the generalized logistic equation. It is shown that the dependence of the number of the infected people on time is well described on average by the logistic curve (within the framework of a simple or generalized logistic equation) with a determination coefficient exceeding 0.8. At the same time, the dependence of the number of the infected people per day on time has a very uneven character and can be described very roughly by the logistic curve. To describe it, it is necessary to take into account the dependence of the model coefficients on time or on the total number of cases. Variations, for example, of the growth rate can reach 60%. The variability spectra of the coefficients have characteristic peaks at periods of several days, which corresponds to the observed serial intervals. The use of the stochastic logistic equation is proposed to estimate the number of probable peaks in the coronavirus incidence.

Numerical simulation of a solitonic gas in KdV and KdV-BBM equations

The collective behaviour of soliton ensembles (i.e. the solitonic gas) is studied using the methods of the direct numerical simulation. Traditionally this problem was addressed in the context of integrable models such as the celebrated KdV equation. We extend this analysis to non-integrable KdV-BBM type models. Some high resolution numerical results are presented in both integrable and nonintegrable cases. Moreover, the free surface elevation probability distribution is shown to be quasi-stationary. Finally, we employ the asymptotic methods along with the Monte-Carlo simulations in order to study quantitatively the dependence of some important statistical characteristics (such as the kurtosis and skewness) on the Stokes-Ursell number (which measures the relative importance of nonlinear effects compared to the dispersion) and also on the magnitude of the BBM term.

Universal breaking point asymptotic for energy spectrum of Riemann waves in weakly nonlinear non-dispersive media

In this Letter we study the form of the energy spectrum of Riemann waves in weakly nonlinear non-dispersive media. For quadratic and cubic nonlinearity we demonstrate that the deformation of an Riemann wave over time yields an exponential energy spectrum which turns into power law asymptotic with the slope being approximately -8/3 at the last stage of evolution before breaking. We argue, that this is the universal asymptotic behaviour of Riemann waves in any nonlinear non-dispersive medium at the point of breaking. The results reported in this Letter can be used in various non-dispersive media, e.g. magneto-hydro dynamics, physical oceanography, nonlinear acoustics.

Universal power law for the energy spectrum of breaking Riemann waves

The universal power law for the spectrum of one-dimensional breaking Riemann waves is justified for the simple wave equation. The spectrum of spatial amplitudes at the breaking time $t = t_b$ has an asymptotic decay of $k^{-4/3}$, with corresponding energy spectrum decaying as $k^{-8/3}$. This spectrum is formed by the singularity of the form $(x-x_b)^{1/3}$ in the wave shape at the breaking time. This result remains valid for arbitrary nonlinear wave speed. In addition, we demonstrate numerically that the universal power law is observed for long time in the range of small wave numbers if small dissipation or dispersion is accounted in the viscous Burgers or Korteweg-de Vries equations.

Physical simulation of resonant wave run-up on a beach

Nonlinear wave run-up on the beach caused by harmonic wave maker located at some distance from the shore line is studied experimentally. It is revealed that under certain wave excitation frequencies a significant increase in run-up amplification is observed. It is found that this amplification is due to the excitation of resonant mode in the region between the shoreline and wave maker. Frequency and magnitude of the maximum amplification are in good correlation with the numerical calculation results represented in the paper (T.S. Stefanakis et al. PRL (2011)). These effects are very important for understanding the nature of rougue waves in the coastle zone.

Runup of tsunami waves in U-shaped bays

The problem of tsunami wave shoaling and runup in U-shaped bays (such as fjords) and underwater canyons is studied in the framework of shallow water theory. The wave shoaling in bays, when the depth varies smoothly along the channel axis, is studied with the use of asymptotic approach. In this case a weak reflection provides significant shoaling effects. The existence of traveling (progressive) waves, propagating in bays, when the water depth changes significantly along the channel axis, is studied. It is shown that traveling waves do exist for certain bay bathymetry configurations and may propagate over large distances without reflection. The tsunami runup in such bays is significantly larger than for a plane beach.

Long Wave Dynamics along a Convex Bottom

Long linear wave transformation in the basin of varying depth is studied for a case of a convex bottom profile in the framework of one-dimensional shallow water equation. The existence of travelling wave solutions in this geometry and the uniqueness of this wave class is established through construction of a 1:1 transformation of the general 1D wave equation to the analogous wave equation with constant coefficients. The general solution of the Cauchy problem consists of two travelling waves propagating in opposite directions. It is found that generally a zone of a weak current is formed between these two waves. Waves are reflected from the coastline so that their profile is inverted with respect to the calm water surface. Long wave runup on a beach with this profile is studied for sine pulse, KdV soliton and N-wave. Shown is that in certain cases the runup height along the convex profile is considerably larger than for beaches with a linear slope. The analysis of wave reflection from the bottom containing a shallow coastal area of constant depth and a section with the convex profile shows that a transmitted wave always has a sign-variable shape.

Tsunami wave runup on coasts of narrow bays

The runup of tsunami waves on the coasts of the barrow bays, channels and straits is studied in the framework of the nonlinear shallow water theory. Using the narrowness of the water channel, the one-dimensional equations are applied; they include the variable cross-section of channel. It is shown that the analytical solutions can be obtained with use of the hodograph (Legendre) transformation similar to the wave runup on the plane beach. As a result, the linear wave equation is derived and all physical variables (water displacement, fluid velocity, coordinate and time) can be determined. The dynamics of the moving shoreline (boundary of the flooding zone) is investigated in details. It is shown that all analytical formulas for the moving shoreline can be obtained explicitly. Two examples of the incident wave shapes are analysed: sine wave and parabolic pulse. The last example demonstrates that even for approaching of the crest only, the flooding can appear very quickly; then water will recede relatively slowly, and then again quickly return to the initial state.
