A Maupertuis-type principle in relativistic mechanics and applications

We provide a Maupertuis-type principle for the following system of ODE, of interest in special relativity: $$ \frac{\rm d}{{\rm d}t}\left(\frac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^2/c^2}}\right)=\nabla V(x),\qquad x\inΩ\subset \mathbb{R}^n, $$ where $m, c > 0$ and $V: Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ is a function of class $C^1$. As an application, we prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions with prescribed energy for a relativistic $N$-centre type problem in the plane.

Periodic solutions to relativistic Kepler problems: a variational approach

We study relativistic Kepler problems in the plane. At first, using non-smooth critical point theory, we show that under a general time-periodic external force of gradient type there are two infinite families of T-periodic solutions, parameterized by their winding number around the singularity: the first family is a sequence of local minima, while the second one comes from a mountain pass-type geometry of the action functional. Secondly, we investigate the minimality of the circular and non-circular periodic solutions of the unforced problem, via Morse index theory and level estimates of the action functional.

Planar Hamiltonian systems: index theory and applications to the existence of subharmonics

We consider a planar Hamiltonian system of the type $Jz' = \nabla_z H(t,z)$, where $H: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ is a function periodic in the time variable, such that $\nabla_z H(t,0) \equiv 0$ and $\nabla_z H(t,z)$ is asymptotically linear for $\vert z \vert \to +\infty$. After revisiting the index theory for linear planar Hamiltonian systems, by using the Poincaré-Birkhoff fixed point theorem we prove that the above nonlinear system has subharmonic solutions of any order $k$ large enough, whenever the rotation numbers (or, equivalently, the mean Conley-Zehnder indices) of the linearizations of the system at zero and at infinity are different. Applications are given to the case of planar Hamiltonian systems coming from second order scalar ODEs.

Parabolic orbits in Celestial Mechanics: a functional-analytic approach

We prove the existence of half-entire parabolic solutions, asymptotic to a prescribed central configuration, for the equation \begin{equation*} \ddot{x} = \nabla U(x) + \nabla W(t,x), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^{d}, \end{equation*} where $d \geq 2$, $U$ is a positive and positively homogeneous potential with homogeneity degree $-α$ with $α\in\mathopen{]}0,2\mathclose{[}$, and $W$ is a (possibly time-dependent) lower order term, for $\vert x \vert \to +\infty$, with respect to $U$. The proof relies on a perturbative argument, after an appropriate formulation of the problem in a suitable functional space. Applications to several problems of Celestial Mechanics (including the $N$-centre problem, the $N$-body problem and the restricted $(N+H)$-body problem) are given.

Periodic solutions to a perturbed relativistic Kepler problem

We consider a perturbed relativistic Kepler problem \begin{equation*} \dfrac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}t}\left(\dfrac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^2/c^2}}\right)=-α\, \dfrac{x}{|x|^3}+\varepsilon \, \nabla_x U(t,x), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{0\}, \end{equation*} where $m, α> 0$, $c$ is the speed of light and $U(t,x)$ is a function $T$-periodic in the first variable. For $\varepsilon > 0$ sufficiently small, we prove the existence of $T$-periodic solutions with prescribed winding number, bifurcating from invariant tori of the unperturbed problem.

Positive solutions for a Minkowski-curvature equation with indefinite weight and super-exponential nonlinearity

We investigate the existence of positive solutions for a class of Minkowski-curvature equations with indefinite weight and nonlinear term having superlinear growth at zero and super-exponential growth at infinity. As an example, for the equation \begin{equation*} \Biggl{(} \dfrac{u'}{\sqrt{1-(u')^{2}}}\Biggr{)}' + a(t) \bigl{(}e^{u^{p}}-1\bigr{)} = 0, \end{equation*} where $p > 1$ and $a(t)$ is a sign-changing function satisfying the mean-value condition $\int_{0}^{T} a(t)\,\mathrm{d}t < 0$, we prove the existence of a positive solution for both periodic and Neumann boundary conditions. The proof relies on a topological degree technique.

Unbounded solutions to systems of differential equations at resonance

We deal with a weakly coupled system of ODEs of the type $$ x_j'' + n_j^2 \,x_j + h_j(x_1,\ldots,x_d) = p_j(t), \qquad j=1,\ldots,d, $$ with $h_j$ locally Lipschitz continuous and bounded, $p_j$ continuous and $2π$-periodic, $n_j \in \mathbb{N}$ (so that the system is at resonance). By means of a Lyapunov function approach for discrete dynamical systems, we prove the existence of unbounded solutions, when either global or asymptotic conditions on the coupling terms $h_1,\ldots,h_d$ are assumed.

Uniqueness of positive solutions for boundary value problems associated with indefinite $ϕ$-Laplacian type equations

The paper provides a uniqueness result for positive solutions of the Neumann and periodic boundary value problems associated with the $ϕ$-Laplacian equation \begin{equation*} \bigl{(} ϕ(u') \bigr{)}' + a(t) g(u) = 0, \end{equation*} where $ϕ$ is a homeomorphism with $ϕ(0)=0$, $a(t)$ is a stepwise indefinite weight and $g(u)$ is a continuous function. When dealing with the $p$-Laplacian differential operator $ϕ(s)=|s|^{p-2}s$ with $p>1$, and the nonlinear term $g(u)=u^γ$ with $γ\in\mathbb{R}$, we prove the existence of a unique positive solution when $γ\in\mathopen{]}-\infty,(1-2p)/(p-1)\mathclose{]} \cup \mathopen{]}p-1,+\infty\mathclose{[}$.

A priori bounds and multiplicity of positive solutions for $p$-Laplacian Neumann problems with sub-critical growth

Let $1<p<+\infty$ and let $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$ be either a ball or an annulus. We continue the analysis started in [Boscaggin, Colasuonno, Noris, ESAIM Control Optim. Calc. Var. (2017)], concerning quasilinear Neumann problems of the type \[ -Δ_p u = f(u), \quad u>0 \mbox{ in } Ω, \quad \partial_νu = 0 \mbox{ on } \partialΩ. \] We suppose that $f(0)=f(1)=0$ and that $f$ is negative between the two zeros and positive after. In case $Ω$ is a ball, we also require that $f$ grows less than the Sobolev-critical power at infinity. We prove a priori bounds of radial solutions, focusing in particular on solutions which start above 1. As an application, we use the shooting technique to get existence, multiplicity and oscillatory behavior (around 1) of non-constant radial solutions.

Pairs of nodal solutions for a Minkowski-curvature boundary value problem in a ball

By using a shooting technique, we prove that the quasilinear boundary value problem $$ \textrm{div} \, \left( \frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1-| \nabla u |^2}}\right) + λq(| x |) | u |^{p-1} u = 0, \qquad u|_{\partial \mathcal{B}} = 0,$$ where $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a ball and $p > 1$, has more and more pairs of nodal solutions on growing of the parameter $λ> 0$. The radial Neumann problem and the periodic problem for the corresponding one-dimensional equation are considered, as well.

Parabolic solutions for the planar $N$-centre problem: multiplicity and scattering

For the planar $N$-centre problem $$ \ddot x = - \sum_{i=1}^N \frac{m_i (x-c_i)}{| x - c_i|^{α+2}}, \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{ c_1,\ldots,c_N \}, $$ where $m_i > 0$ for $i=1,\ldots,N$ and $α\in [1,2)$, we prove the existence of entire parabolic trajectories, having prescribed asymptotic directions for $t \to \pm\infty$ and prescribed topological characterization with respect to the set of the centres.

Periodic solutions and regularization of a Kepler problem with time-dependent perturbation

We consider a Kepler problem in dimension two or three, with a time-dependent $T$-periodic perturbation. We prove that for any prescribed positive integer $N$, there exist at least $N$ periodic solutions (with period $T$) as long as the perturbation is small enough. Here the solutions are understood in a general sense as they can have collisions. The concept of generalized solutions is defined intrinsically and it coincides with the notion obtained in Celestial Mechanics via the theory of regularization of collisions.

preprint2016arXiv

Positive subharmonic solutions to nonlinear ODEs with indefinite weight

We prove that the superlinear indefinite equation \begin{equation*} u" + a(t)u^{p} = 0, \end{equation*} where $p > 1$ and $a(t)$ is a $T$-periodic sign-changing function satisfying the (sharp) mean value condition $\int_{0}^{T} a(t)~\!dt < 0$, has positive subharmonic solutions of order $k$ for any large integer $k$, thus providing a further contribution to a problem raised by G. J. Butler in its pioneering paper (JDE, 1976). The proof, which applies to a larger class of indefinite equations, combines coincidence degree theory (yielding a positive harmonic solution) with the Poincaré-Birkhoff fixed point theorem (giving subharmonic solutions oscillating around it).

Asymptotic and chaotic solutions of a singularly perturbed Nagumo-type equation

We deal with the singularly perturbed Nagumo-type equation $$ ε^2 u'' + u(1-u)(u-a(s)) = 0, $$ where $ε> 0$ is a real parameter and $a: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a piecewise constant function satisfying $0 < a(s) < 1$ for all $s$. We prove the existence of chaotic, homoclinic and heteroclinic solutions, when $ε$ is small enough. We use a dynamical systems approach, based on the Stretching Along Paths method and on the Conley-Wazewski's method.

Pairs of positive periodic solutions of nonlinear ODEs with indefinite weight: a topological degree approach for the super-sublinear case

We study the periodic and the Neumann boundary value problems associated with the second order nonlinear differential equation \begin{equation*} u'' + c u' + λa(t) g(u) = 0, \end{equation*} where $g \colon \mathopen{[}0,+\infty\mathclose{[}\to \mathopen{[}0,+\infty\mathclose{[}$ is a sublinear function at infinity having superlinear growth at zero. We prove the existence of two positive solutions when $\int_{0}^{T} a(t) \!dt < 0$ and $λ> 0$ is sufficiently large. Our approach is based on Mawhin's coincidence degree theory and index computations.

preprint2015arXiv

Positive solutions to indefinite Neumann problems when the weight has positive average

We deal with positive solutions for the Neumann boundary value problem associated with the scalar second order ODE $$ u" + q(t)g(u) = 0, \quad t \in [0, T], $$ where $g: [0, +\infty[\, \to \mathbb{R}$ is positive on $\,]0, +\infty[\,$ and $q(t)$ is an indefinite weight. Complementary to previous investigations in the case $\int_0^T q(t) < 0$, we provide existence results for a suitable class of weights having (small) positive mean, when $g'(x) < 0$ at infinity. Our proof relies on a shooting argument for a suitable equivalent planar system of the type $$ x' = y, \qquad y' = h(x)y^2 + q(t), $$ with $h(x)$ a continuous function defined on the whole real line.

preprint2014arXiv

Highly oscillatory solutions of a Neumann problem for a $p$-laplacian equation

We deal with a boundary value problem of the form $-ε(ϕ_p(εu'))'+a(x)W'(u)=0,\quad u'(0)=0=u'(1),$ where $ϕ_p(s) = \vert s \vert^{p-2} s$ for $s \in \mathbb{R}$ and $p>1$, and $W:[-1,1] \to {\mathbb R}$ is a double-well potential. We study the limit profile of solutions when $ε\to 0^+$ and, conversely, we prove the existence of nodal solutions associated with any admissible limit profile when $ε$ is small enough.

preprint2014arXiv

Positive solutions with a complex behavior for superlinear indefinite ODEs on the real line

We show the existence of infinitely many positive solutions, defined on the real line, for the nonlinear scalar ODE \[ \ddot u + (a^+(t) - μa^-(t)) u^3 = 0, \] where $a$ is a periodic, sign-changing function, and the parameter $μ>0$ is large. Such solutions are characterized by the fact of being either small or large in each interval of positivity of $a$. In this way, we find periodic solutions, having minimal period arbitrarily large, and bounded non-periodic solutions, exhibiting a complex behavior. The proof is variational, exploiting suitable natural constraints of Nehari type.
