Entanglement in De Sitter Space

This paper expands on two recent proposals, \cite{Susskind:2021dfc}\cite{Susskind:2021esx} and \cite{Shaghoulian:2021cef}, for generalizing the Ryu-Takayanagi and Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formulas to de Sitter space. The proposals (called the monolayer and bilayer proposals) are similar; both replace the boundary of AdS by the boundaries of static-patches--in other words event horizons. After stating the rules for each, we apply them to a number of cases and show that they yield results expected on other grounds. The monolayer and bilayer proposals often give the same results, but in one particular situation they disagree. To definitively decide between them we need to understand more about the nature of the thermodynamic limit of holographic systems.

The central dogma and cosmological horizons

The central dogma of black hole physics -- which says that from the outside a black hole can be described in terms of a quantum system with exp$(\text{Area}/4G_N)$ states evolving unitarily -- has recently been supported by computations indicating that the interior of the black hole is encoded in the Hawking radiation of the exterior. In this paper, we probe whether such a dogma for cosmological horizons has any support from similar computations. The fact that the de Sitter bifurcation surface is a minimax surface (instead of a maximin surface) causes problems with this interpretation when trying to import calculations analogous to the AdS case. This suggests anchoring extremal surfaces to the horizon itself, where we formulate a two-sided extremization prescription and find answers consistent with general expectations for a quantum theory of de Sitter space: vanishing total entropy, an entropy of $A/4G_N$ when restricting to a single static patch, an entropy of a subregion of the horizon which grows as the region size grows until an island-like transition at half the horizon size when the entanglement wedge becomes the entire static patch interior, and a de Sitter version of the Hartman-Maldacena transition.

A symmetry principle for emergent spacetime

There are many examples where geometry and gravity are concepts that emerge from a theory of quantum mechanics without gravity. This suggests thinking of gravity as an exotic phase of matter. Quantifying this phase in the Landau paradigm requires some sort of symmetry principle or order parameter that captures its appearance. In this essay we propose higher-form symmetries as a symmetry principle underlying emergent spacetime. We explore higher-form symmetries in gauge-gravity duality and explain how their breaking describes features of a gravitational theory. Such symmetries imply the existence of nonlocal objects in the gravitational theory -- in gauge-gravity duality these are the strings and branes of the bulk theory -- giving an alternative way to understand the nonlocality necessary in any ultraviolet completion of gravity.

Islands in Asymptotically Flat 2D Gravity

The large-N limit of asymptotically flat two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to N free matter fields provides a useful toy model for semiclassical black holes and the information paradox. Analyses of the asymptotic information flux as given by the entanglement entropy show that it follows the Hawking curve, indicating that information is destroyed in these models. Recently, motivated by developments in AdS/CFT, a semiclassical island rule for entropy has been proposed. We define and compute the island rule entropy for black hole formation and evaporation in the large-N RST model of dilaton gravity and show that, in contrast, it follows the unitary Page curve. The relation of these two observations, and interesting properties of the dilaton gravity island rule, are discussed.

Replica Wormholes and the Entropy of Hawking Radiation

The information paradox can be realized in anti-de Sitter spacetime joined to a Minkowski region. In this setting, we show that the large discrepancy between the von Neumann entropy as calculated by Hawking and the requirements of unitarity is fixed by including new saddles in the gravitational path integral. These saddles arise in the replica method as complexified wormholes connecting different copies of the black hole. As the replica number $n \to 1$, the presence of these wormholes leads to the island rule for the computation of the fine-grained gravitational entropy. We discuss these replica wormholes explicitly in two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to matter.

$T\overline{T}$ in AdS$_2$ and Quantum Mechanics

Quantum field theory in zero spatial dimensions has a rich infrared landscape and a universal ultraviolet, inverting the usual Wilsonian paradigm. For holographic theories this implies a rich landscape of asymptotically AdS$_2$ geometries. Isolating the interiors of these spacetimes suggests a study of the analog of the $T\overline{T}$ deformation in quantum mechanics, which we pursue here. An equivalent description of this deformation in terms of coupling to worldline gravity is proposed, and applications to quantum mechanical systems - including the Schwarzian theory - are studied.

Hamiltonian deformations in quantum mechanics, $T\bar T$, and SYK

Motivated by $T\bar T$, we introduce and study a wide class of solvable deformations of quantum-mechanical theories. These deformations map the Hamiltonian to a function of itself. We solve these theories by computing all finite-temperature correlation functions of the deformed theory in terms of the correlators of the undeformed theory. Applications to AdS/CFT, SYK, and the Schwarzian theory are considered. We write down the deformed Schwarzian action for an arbitrary Hamiltonian deformation and find that the maximal Lyapunov exponent is unchanged.

Late-time Structure of the Bunch-Davies FRW Wavefunction

In this short note we organize a perturbation theory for the Bunch-Davies wavefunction in flat, accelerating cosmologies. The calculational technique avoids the in-in formalism and instead uses an analytic continuation from Euclidean signature. We will consider both massless and conformally coupled self-interacting scalars. These calculations explicitly illustrate two facts. The first is that IR divergences get sharper as the acceleration slows. The second is that UV-divergent contact terms in the Euclidean computation can contribute to the absolute value of the wavefunction in Lorentzian signature. Here UV divergent refers to terms involving inverse powers of the radial cutoff in the Euclidean computation. In Lorentzian signature such terms encode physical time dependence of the wavefunction.

Modular forms and a generalized Cardy formula in higher dimensions

We derive a formula which applies to conformal field theories on a spatial torus and gives the asymptotic density of states solely in terms of the vacuum energy on a parallel plate geometry. The formula follows immediately from global scale and Lorentz invariance, but to our knowledge has not previously been made explicit. It can also be understood from the fact that $\log Z$ on $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{R}^{d-1}$ transforms as the absolute value of a non-holomorphic modular form of weight $d-1$, which we show. The results are extended to theories which violate Lorentz invariance and hyperscaling but maintain a scaling symmetry. The formula is checked for the cases of a free scalar, free Maxwell gauge field, and free $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. The case of a Maxwell gauge field gives Casimir's original calculation of the electromagnetic force between parallel plates in terms of the entropy of a photon gas.

Timelike BKL singularities and chaos in AdS/CFT

We study the nature of a family of curvature singularities which are precisely the timelike cousins of the spacelike singularities studied by Belinski, Khalatnikov, and Lifshitz (BKL). We show that the approach to the singularity can be modeled by a billiard ball problem on hyperbolic space, just as in the case of BKL. For pure gravity, generic chaotic behavior is retained in (3+1) dimensions, and we provide evidence that it disappears in higher dimensions. We speculate that such singularities, if occurring in AdS/CFT and of the chaotic variety, may be interpreted as (transient) chaotic renormalization group flows which exhibit features reminiscent of chaotic duality cascades.

Black hole microstates in AdS

We extend a recently derived higher-dimensional Cardy formula to include angular momenta, which we use to obtain the Bekensten-Hawking entropy of AdS black branes, compactified rotating branes, and large Schwarzschild/Kerr black holes. This is the natural generalization of Strominger's microscopic derivation of the BTZ black hole entropy to higher dimensions. We propose an extension to include $U(1)$ charge, which agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large Reissner-Nordstrom/Kerr-Newman black holes at high temperature. We extend the results to arbitrary hyperscaling violation exponent (this captures the case of black D$p$-branes as a subclass) and reproduce logarithmic corrections.

Chern-Simons-Ghost Theories and de Sitter Space

We explore Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental ghost-like matter in the large $N$ limit at 't Hooft coupling $λ$. These theories have been conjectured to be holographically dual to parity-violating, asymptotically dS$_4$ universes with a tower of light higher-spin fields. On $\mathbb{R}^3$, to all orders in large-$N$ perturbation theory, we show that Chern-Simons-ghost theories are related to ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories by mapping $N \rightarrow - N$ and keeping $λ$ fixed. Consequently, the bosonization duality of ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories extends to a bosonization duality of Chern-Simons-ghost theories on $\mathbb R^3$. On $S^1 \times S^2$, in the small-$S^1$ limit, neither $N \rightarrow -N$ nor bosonization hold, as we show by extensively studying large-$N$ saddles of the theories with both ghost and ordinary matter. The partition functions we compute along the way can be viewed as pieces of the late-time Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for the bulk dS$_4$ gravity theories.

FRW cosmologies and hyperscaling-violating geometries: higher curvature corrections, ultrametricity, Q-space/QFT duality, and a little string theory

We analyze flat FRW cosmologies and hyperscaling-violating geometries by emphasizing the analytic continuation between them and their scale covariance. We exhibit two main calculations where this point of view is useful. First, based on the scale covariance, we show that the structure of higher curvature corrections to Einstein's equation is very simple. Second, in the context of accelerated FRW cosmologies, also known as Q-space, we begin by calculating the Bunch-Davies wavefunctional for a massless scalar field and considering its interpretation as a generating functional of correlation functions of a holographic dual. We use this to conjecture a Q-space/QFT duality, a natural extension of dS/CFT, and argue that the Euclidean dual theory violates hyperscaling. This proposal, when extended to epochs in our own cosmological history like matter or radiation domination, suggests a holographically dual description via RG phases which violate hyperscaling. We further use the wavefunctional to compute Anninos-Denef overlaps and show that the ultrametric structure discovered for de Sitter becomes sharper in accelerated FRW cosmologies as the acceleration slows. The substitution $d --> d_{eff}=d-θ$ permeates and illuminates the discussion of wavefunctionals and overlaps in FRW cosmologies, allowing one to predict the sharpened structure. We try to find an alternate manifestation of this ultrametric structure by studying the connection of the $θ--> -\infty$ background to little string theory.

Gravity waves from cosmic bubble collisions

Our local Hubble volume might be contained within a bubble that nucleated in a false vacuum with only two large spatial dimensions. We study bubble collisions in this scenario and find that they generate gravity waves, which are made possible in this context by the reduced symmetry of the global geometry. These gravity waves would produce B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background, which could in principle dominate over the inflationary background.

Higher Spin de Sitter Holography from Functional Determinants

We discuss further aspects of the higher spin dS/CFT correspondence. Using a recent result of Dunne and Kirsten, it is shown how to numerically compute the partition function of the free Sp(N) model for a large class of SO(3) preserving deformations of the flat/round metric on R^3/S^3 and the source of the spin-zero single-trace operator dual to the bulk scalar. We interpret this partition function as a Hartle-Hawking wavefunctional. It has a local maximum about the pure de Sitter vacuum. Restricting to SO(3) preserving deformations, other local maxima (which exceed the one near the de Sitter vacuum) can peak at inhomogeneous and anisotropic values of the late time metric and scalar profile. Numerical experiments suggest the remarkable observation that, upon fixing a certain average of the bulk scalar profile at I^+, the wavefunction becomes normalizable in all the other (infinite) directions of the deformation. We elucidate the meaning of double trace deformations in the context of dS/CFT as a change of basis and as a convolution. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of higher spin de Sitter holography by coupling the free theory to a Chern-Simons term.

Warped Entanglement Entropy

We study the applicability of the covariant holographic entanglement entropy proposal to asymptotically warped AdS$_3$ spacetimes with an SL(2,R) x U(1) isometry. We begin by applying the proposal to locally AdS$_3$ backgrounds which are written as a real-line fibration over AdS$_2$. We then perturb away from this geometry by considering a warping parameter $a=1+δ$ to get an asymptotically warped AdS$_3$ spacetime and compute the dual entanglement entropy perturbatively in $δ$. We find that for large separation in the fiber coordinate, the entanglement entropy can be computed to all orders in $δ$ and takes the universal form appropriate for two-dimensional CFTs. The warping-dependent central charge thus identified exactly agrees with previous calculations in the literature. Performing the same perturbative calculations for the warped BTZ black hole again gives universal two-dimensional CFT answers, with the left-moving and right-moving temperatures appearing appropriately in the result.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Fermi Surfaces

The entanglement entropy in theories with a Fermi surface is known to produce a logarithmic violation of the usual area law behavior. We explore the possibility of producing this logarithmic violation holographically by analyzing the IR regions of the bulk geometries dual to such theories. The geometry of Ogawa, Takayanagi, and Ugajin is explored and shown to have a null curvature singularity for all values of parameters, except for dynamical critical exponent 3/2 in four dimensions. The results are extended to general hyperscaling violation exponent. We explore strings propagating through the singularity and show that they become infinitely excited, suggesting the singularity is not resolved by stringy effects and may become a full-fledged "stringularity." An Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton embedding of the nonsingular geometry is exhibited where the dilaton asymptotes to a constant in the IR. The unique nonsingular geometry in any given number of dimensions is proposed as a model to study the T=0 limit of a theory with a Fermi surface.

Spectral weight in holographic scaling geometries

We compute the low energy spectral density of transverse currents in theories with holographic duals that exhibit an emergent scaling symmetry characterized by dynamical critical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. For any finite $z$ and $θ$, the low energy spectral density is exponentially small at nonzero momentum. This indicates that any nonzero momentum low energy excitations of putative hidden Fermi surfaces are not visible in the classical bulk limit. We furthermore show that if the limit $z \to \infty$ is taken with the ratio $η= - θ/z > 0$ held fixed, then the resulting theory is locally quantum critical with an entropy density that vanishes at low temperatures as $s \sim T^η$. In these cases the low energy spectral weight at nonzero momentum is not exponentially suppressed, possibly indicating a more fermionic nature of these theories.

Supergoop Dynamics

We initiate a systematic study of the dynamics of multi-particle systems with supersymmetric Van der Waals and electron-monopole type interactions. The static interaction allows a complex continuum of ground state configurations, while the Lorentz interaction tends to counteract this configurational fluidity by magnetic trapping, thus producing an exotic low temperature phase of matter aptly named supergoop. Such systems arise naturally in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories as monopole-dyon mixtures, and in string theory as collections of particles or black holes obtained by wrapping D-branes on internal space cycles. After discussing the general system and its relation to quiver quantum mechanics, we focus on the case of three particles. We give an exhaustive enumeration of the classical and quantum ground states of a probe in an arbitrary background with two fixed centers. We uncover a hidden conserved charge and show that the dynamics of the probe is classically integrable. In contrast, the dynamics of one heavy and two light particles moving on a line shows a nontrivial transition to chaos, which we exhibit by studying the Poincaré sections. Finally we explore the complex dynamics of a probe particle in a background with a large number of centers, observing hints of ergodicity breaking. We conclude by discussing possible implications in a holographic context.

Pixel-based correction for Charge Transfer Inefficiency in the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys

Charge Transfer Inefficiency (CTI) due to radiation damage above the Earth's atmosphere creates spurious trailing in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Radiation damage also creates unrelated warm pixels - but these happen to be perfect for measuring CTI. We model CTI in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS)/Wide Field Channel (WFC) and construct a physically motivated correction scheme. This operates on raw data, rather than secondary science products, by returning individual electrons to pixels from which they were unintentionally dragged during readout. We apply our correction to images from the HST COSMOS survey, successfully reducing the CTI trails by a factor of ~30 everywhere in the CCD and at all flux levels. We quantify changes in galaxy photometry, astrometry and shape. The remarkable 97% level of correction is more than sufficient to enable a (forthcoming) reanalysis of downstream science products, and the collection of larger surveys.
