One-dimensional Quantum Gravity and the Schwarzian theory

We develop a model of one-dimensional (Conformal) Quantum Gravity. By discussing the connection between Goldstone and Gauge theories, we establish that this model effectively computes the partition function of the Schwarzian theory where the $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry is realized on the base space. The computation is straightforward, involves a local quantum measure and does not rely on localization arguments. Non-localities in the model are exclusively related to the value of fixed gauge invariant moduli. Furthermore, we study the properties of these models when all degrees of freedom are allowed to fluctuate. We discuss the UV finiteness properties of these systems and the emergence of a Planck's length.

Quantum de Sitter horizon entropy from quasicanonical bulk, edge, sphere and topological string partition functions

Motivated by the prospect of constraining microscopic models, we calculate the exact one-loop corrected de Sitter entropy (the logarithm of the sphere partition function) for every effective field theory of quantum gravity, with particles in arbitrary spin representations. In doing so, we universally relate the sphere partition function to the quotient of a quasi-canonical bulk and a Euclidean edge partition function, given by integrals of characters encoding the bulk and edge spectrum of the observable universe. Expanding the bulk character splits the bulk (entanglement) entropy into quasinormal mode (quasiqubit) contributions. For 3D higher-spin gravity formulated as an sl($n$) Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all-loop exact results. Further to this, we show that the theory has an exponentially large landscape of de Sitter vacua with quantum entropy given by the absolute value squared of a topological string partition function. For generic higher-spin gravity, the formalism succinctly relates dS, AdS$^\pm$ and conformal results. Holography is exhibited in quasi-exact bulk-edge cancelation.

Three-dimensional de Sitter horizon thermodynamics

We explore thermodynamic contributions to the three-dimensional de Sitter horizon originating from metric and Chern-Simons gauge field fluctuations. In Euclidean signature these are computed by the partition function of gravity coupled to matter semi-classically expanded about the round three-sphere saddle. We investigate a corresponding Lorentzian picture - drawing inspiration from the topological entanglement entropy literature - in the form of an edge-mode theory residing at the de Sitter horizon. We extend the discussion to three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant, viewed (semi-classically) as a complexified Chern-Simons theory. The putative gravitational edge-mode theory is a complexified version of the chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model associated to the edge-modes of ordinary Chern-Simons theory. We introduce and solve a family of complexified Abelian Chern-Simons theories as a way to elucidate some of the more salient features of the gravitational edge-mode theories. We comment on the relation to the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence.

Constructing AdS_2 flow geometries

We consider two-dimensional geometries flowing away from an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime. Macroscopically, flow geometries and their thermodynamic properties are studied from the perspective of dilaton-gravity models. We present a precise map constructing the fixed background metric from the boundary two-point function of a nearly massless matter field. We analyse constraints on flow geometries, viewed as solutions of dimensionally reduced theories, stemming from energy conditions. Microscopically, we construct computationally tractable RG flows in SYK-type models at vanishing and non-vanishing temperature. For certain regimes of parameter space, the flow geometry holographically encoding the microscopic RG flow is argued to interpolate between two (near) AdS$_2$ spacetimes. The coupling between matter fields and the dilaton in the putative bulk is also discussed. We speculate on microscopic flows interpolating between an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime and a portion of a dS$_2$ world.

De Sitter Horizons & Holographic Liquids

We explore asymptotically AdS$_2$ solutions of a particular two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theory. In the deep interior, these solutions flow to the cosmological horizon of dS$_2$. We calculate various matter perturbations at the linearised and non-linear level. We consider both Euclidean and Lorentzian perturbations. The results can be used to characterise the features of a putative dual quantum mechanics. The chaotic nature of the de Sitter horizon is assessed through the soft mode action at the AdS$_2$ boundary, as well as the behaviour of shockwave type solutions.

Infrared Realization of dS$_2$ in AdS$_2$

We describe a two-dimensional geometry that smoothly interpolates between an asymptotically AdS$_2$ geometry and the static patch of dS$_2$. We find this `centaur' geometry to be a solution of dilaton gravity with a specific class of potentials for the dilaton. We interpret the centaur geometry as a thermal state in the putative quantum mechanics dual to the AdS$_2$ evolved with the global Hamiltonian. We compute the thermodynamic properties and observe that the centaur state has finite entropy and positive specific heat. The static patch is the infrared part of the centaur geometry. We discuss boundary observables sensitive to the static patch region.

Grassmann Matrix Quantum Mechanics

We explore quantum mechanical theories whose fundamental degrees of freedom are rectangular matrices with Grassmann valued matrix elements. We study particular models where the low energy sector can be described in terms of a bosonic Hermitian matrix quantum mechanics. We describe the classical curved phase space that emerges in the low energy sector. The phase space lives on a compact Kahler manifold parameterized by a complex matrix, of the type discovered some time ago by Berezin. The emergence of a semiclassical bosonic matrix quantum mechanics at low energies requires that the original Grassmann matrices be in the long rectangular limit. We discuss possible holographic interpretations of such matrix models which, by construction, are endowed with a finite dimensional Hilbert space.

Late-time Structure of the Bunch-Davies De Sitter Wavefunction

We examine the late time behavior of the Bunch-Davies wavefunction for interacting light fields in a de Sitter background. We use perturbative techniques developed in the framework of AdS/CFT, and analytically continue to compute tree and loop level contributions to the Bunch-Davies wavefunction. We consider self-interacting scalars of general mass, but focus especially on the massless and conformally coupled cases. We show that certain contributions grow logarithmically in conformal time both at tree and loop level. We also consider gauge fields and gravitons. The four-dimensional Fefferman-Graham expansion of classical asymptotically de Sitter solutions is used to show that the wavefunction contains no logarithmic growth in the pure graviton sector at tree level. Finally, assuming a holographic relation between the wavefunction and the partition function of a conformal field theory, we interpret the logarithmic growths in the language of conformal field theory.

Chern-Simons-Ghost Theories and de Sitter Space

We explore Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental ghost-like matter in the large $N$ limit at 't Hooft coupling $λ$. These theories have been conjectured to be holographically dual to parity-violating, asymptotically dS$_4$ universes with a tower of light higher-spin fields. On $\mathbb{R}^3$, to all orders in large-$N$ perturbation theory, we show that Chern-Simons-ghost theories are related to ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories by mapping $N \rightarrow - N$ and keeping $λ$ fixed. Consequently, the bosonization duality of ordinary Chern-Simons-matter theories extends to a bosonization duality of Chern-Simons-ghost theories on $\mathbb R^3$. On $S^1 \times S^2$, in the small-$S^1$ limit, neither $N \rightarrow -N$ nor bosonization hold, as we show by extensively studying large-$N$ saddles of the theories with both ghost and ordinary matter. The partition functions we compute along the way can be viewed as pieces of the late-time Hartle-Hawking wavefunction for the bulk dS$_4$ gravity theories.

Large N matrices from a nonlocal spin system

Large N matrices underpin the best understood models of emergent spacetime. We suggest that large N matrices can themselves be emergent from simple quantum mechanical spin models with finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We exhibit the emergence of large N matrices in a nonlocal statistical physics model of order N^2 Ising spins. The spin partition function is shown to admit a large N saddle described by a matrix integral, which we solve. The matrix saddle is dominant at high temperatures, metastable at intermediate temperatures and ceases to exist below a critical order one temperature. The matrix saddle is disordered in a sense we make precise and competes with ordered low energy states. We verify our analytic results by Monte Carlo simulation of the spin system.

Conformal Quivers and Melting Molecules

Quiver quantum mechanics describes the low energy dynamics of a system of wrapped D-branes. It captures several aspects of single and multicentered BPS black hole geometries in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity such as the presence of bound states and an exponential growth of microstates. The Coulomb branch of an Abelian three node quiver is obtained by integrating out the massive strings connecting the D-particles. It allows for a scaling regime corresponding to a deep AdS$_2$ throat on the gravity side. In this scaling regime, the Coulomb branch is shown to be an $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ invariant multi-particle superconformal quantum mechanics. Finally, we integrate out the strings at finite temperature---rather than in their ground state---and show how the Coulomb branch `melts' into the Higgs branch at high enough temperatures. For scaling solutions the melting occurs for arbitrarily small temperatures, whereas bound states can be metastable and thus long lived. Throughout the paper, we discuss how far the analogy between the quiver model and the gravity picture, particularly within the AdS$_2$ throat, can be taken.

Higher Spin de Sitter Holography from Functional Determinants

We discuss further aspects of the higher spin dS/CFT correspondence. Using a recent result of Dunne and Kirsten, it is shown how to numerically compute the partition function of the free Sp(N) model for a large class of SO(3) preserving deformations of the flat/round metric on R^3/S^3 and the source of the spin-zero single-trace operator dual to the bulk scalar. We interpret this partition function as a Hartle-Hawking wavefunctional. It has a local maximum about the pure de Sitter vacuum. Restricting to SO(3) preserving deformations, other local maxima (which exceed the one near the de Sitter vacuum) can peak at inhomogeneous and anisotropic values of the late time metric and scalar profile. Numerical experiments suggest the remarkable observation that, upon fixing a certain average of the bulk scalar profile at I^+, the wavefunction becomes normalizable in all the other (infinite) directions of the deformation. We elucidate the meaning of double trace deformations in the context of dS/CFT as a change of basis and as a convolution. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of higher spin de Sitter holography by coupling the free theory to a Chern-Simons term.

Holographic Vitrification

We establish the existence of stable and metastable stationary black hole bound states at finite temperature and chemical potentials in global and planar four-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. We determine a number of features of their holographic duals and argue they represent structural glasses. We map out their thermodynamic landscape in the probe approximation, and show their relaxation dynamics exhibits logarithmic aging, with aging rates determined by the distribution of barriers.

Warped Entanglement Entropy

We study the applicability of the covariant holographic entanglement entropy proposal to asymptotically warped AdS$_3$ spacetimes with an SL(2,R) x U(1) isometry. We begin by applying the proposal to locally AdS$_3$ backgrounds which are written as a real-line fibration over AdS$_2$. We then perturb away from this geometry by considering a warping parameter $a=1+δ$ to get an asymptotically warped AdS$_3$ spacetime and compute the dual entanglement entropy perturbatively in $δ$. We find that for large separation in the fiber coordinate, the entanglement entropy can be computed to all orders in $δ$ and takes the universal form appropriate for two-dimensional CFTs. The warping-dependent central charge thus identified exactly agrees with previous calculations in the literature. Performing the same perturbative calculations for the warped BTZ black hole again gives universal two-dimensional CFT answers, with the left-moving and right-moving temperatures appearing appropriately in the result.

Holography For a De Sitter-Esque Geometry

Warped dS$_3$ arises as a solution to topologically massive gravity (TMG) with positive cosmological constant $+1/\ell^2$ and Chern-Simons coefficient $1/μ$ in the region $μ^2 \ell^2 < 27$. It is given by a real line fibration over two-dimensional de Sitter space and is equivalent to the rotating Nariai geometry at fixed polar angle. We study the thermodynamic and asymptotic structure of a family of geometries with warped dS$_3$ asymptotics. Interestingly, these solutions have both a cosmological horizon and an internal one, and their entropy is unbounded from above unlike black holes in regular de Sitter space. The asymptotic symmetry group resides at future infinity and is given by a semi-direct product of a Virasoro algebra and a current algebra. The right moving central charge vanishes when $μ^2 \ell^2 = 27/5$. We discuss the possible holographic interpretation of these de Sitter-esque spacetimes.

Supergoop Dynamics

We initiate a systematic study of the dynamics of multi-particle systems with supersymmetric Van der Waals and electron-monopole type interactions. The static interaction allows a complex continuum of ground state configurations, while the Lorentz interaction tends to counteract this configurational fluidity by magnetic trapping, thus producing an exotic low temperature phase of matter aptly named supergoop. Such systems arise naturally in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories as monopole-dyon mixtures, and in string theory as collections of particles or black holes obtained by wrapping D-branes on internal space cycles. After discussing the general system and its relation to quiver quantum mechanics, we focus on the case of three particles. We give an exhaustive enumeration of the classical and quantum ground states of a probe in an arbitrary background with two fixed centers. We uncover a hidden conserved charge and show that the dynamics of the probe is classically integrable. In contrast, the dynamics of one heavy and two light particles moving on a line shows a nontrivial transition to chaos, which we exhibit by studying the Poincaré sections. Finally we explore the complex dynamics of a probe particle in a background with a large number of centers, observing hints of ergodicity breaking. We conclude by discussing possible implications in a holographic context.

The Wave Function of Vasiliev's Universe - A Few Slices Thereof

We study the partition function of the free Sp(N) conformal field theory recently conjectured to be dual to asymptotically de Sitter higher-spin gravity in four-dimensions. We compute the partition function of this CFT on a round sphere as a function of a finite mass deformation, on a squashed sphere as a function of the squashing parameter, and on an S2xS1 geometry as a function of the relative size of S2 and S1. We find that the partition function is divergent at large negative mass in the first case, and for small $S^1$ in the third case. It is globally peaked at zero squashing in the second case. Through the duality this partition function contains information about the wave function of the universe. We show that the divergence at small S1 occurs also in Einstein gravity if certain complex solutions are included, but the divergence in the mass parameter is new. We suggest an interpretation for this divergence as indicating an instability of de Sitter space in higher spin gravity, consistent with general arguments that de Sitter space cannot be stable in quantum gravity.

Cosmic Clustering

We show that the late time Hartle-Hawking wave function for a free massless scalar in a fixed de Sitter background encodes a sharp ultrametric structure for the standard Euclidean distance on the space of field configurations. This implies a hierarchical, tree-like organization of the state space, reflecting its genesis as a branched diffusion process. An equivalent mathematical structure organizes the state space of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model of a spin glass.

Future Boundary Conditions in De Sitter Space

We consider asymptotically future de Sitter spacetimes endowed with an eternal observatory. In the conventional descriptions, the conformal metric at the future boundary I^+ is deformed by the flux of gravitational radiation. We however impose an unconventional future "Dirichlet" boundary condition requiring that the conformal metric is flat everywhere except at the conformal point where the observatory arrives at I^+. This boundary condition violates conventional causality, but we argue the causality violations cannot be detected by any experiment in the observatory. We show that the bulk-to-bulk two-point functions obeying this future boundary condition are not realizable as operator correlation functions in any de Sitter invariant vacuum, but they do agree with those obtained by double analytic continuation from anti-de Sitter space.

Higher Spin Realization of the dS/CFT Correspondence

We conjecture that Vasiliev's theory of higher spin gravity in four-dimensional de Sitter space (dS) is holographically dual to a three-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) living on the spacelike boundary of dS at future timelike infinity. The CFT is the Euclidean Sp(N) vector model with anticommuting scalars. The free CFT flows under a double-trace deformation to an interacting CFT in the IR. We argue that both CFTs are dual to Vasiliev dS gravity but with different future boundary conditions on the bulk scalar field. Our analysis rests heavily on analytic continuations of bulk and boundary correlators in the proposed duality relating the O(N) model with Vasiliev gravity in AdS.

Hot Halos and Galactic Glasses

We initiate a systematic study of the state space of non-extremal, stationary black hole bound states in four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity. Specifically, we show that an exponential multitude of classically stable "halo" bound states can be formed between large finite temperature D4-D0 black hole cores and much smaller, arbitrarily charged black holes at the same temperature. We map out in full the regions of existence for thermodynamically stable and metastable bound states in terms of the core's charges and temperature, as well as the region of stability of the core itself. Several features of these systems, such as a macroscopic configurational entropy and exponential relaxation timescales, are similar to those of the extended family of glasses. We draw parallels between the two with a view toward understanding complex systems in fundamental physics.

Incompressible Fluids of the de Sitter Horizon and Beyond

There are (at least) two surfaces of particular interest in eternal de Sitter space. One is the timelike hypersurface constituting the lab wall of a static patch observer and the other is the future boundary of global de Sitter space. We study both linear and non-linear deformations of four-dimensional de Sitter space which obey the Einstein equation. Our deformations leave the induced conformal metric and trace of the extrinsic curvature unchanged for a fixed hypersurface. This hypersurface is either timelike within the static patch or spacelike in the future diamond. We require the deformations to be regular at the future horizon of the static patch observer. For linearized perturbations in the future diamond, this corresponds to imposing incoming flux solely from the future horizon of a single static patch observer. When the slices are arbitrarily close to the cosmological horizon, the finite deformations are characterized by solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for both spacelike and timelike hypersurfaces. We then study, at the level of linearized gravity, the change in the discrete dispersion relation as we push the timelike hypersurface toward the worldline of the static patch. Finally, we study the spectrum of linearized solutions as the spacelike slices are pushed to future infinity and relate our calculations to analogous ones in the context of massless topological black holes in AdS$_4$.

Static Patch Solipsism: Conformal Symmetry of the de Sitter Worldline

We show that the propagators of gravitons and scalar fields seen by a static patch observer in de Sitter spacetime are controlled by hidden SL(2,R) symmetries, at all frequencies. The retarded Green's function is determined by an SL(2,R) x SL(2,R) action generated by conformal Killing vectors of de Sitter spacetime times a line. This observation uses the fact that the static patch of dS_{d+1} x R is conformal to the hyperbolic patch of AdS_3 x S^{d-1}. The poles of the propagators, the quasinormal frequencies, are generated by associated SL(2,R) actions. The quasinormal mode generating algebras capture the conformal weights more usually read off from the fields at future and past infinity. For conformally coupled scalar fields, and for gravitons in four dimensions, this SL(2,R) algebra has an enhanced supersymmetric structure and is generated by particular conformal Killing vectors of de Sitter spacetime. We show how the worldline de Sitter propagators can be reproduced from a `level matched' left and right moving conformal quantum mechanics with an appropriate spectrum of primary operators. Our observations are consistent with the notion that the static patch of de Sitter spacetime is dually described by a (level matched) large N worldline conformal quantum mechanics.

A de Sitter Hoedown

Rotating black holes in de Sitter space are known to have interesting limits where the temperatures of the black hole and cosmological horizon are equal. We give a complete description of the thermal phase structure of all allowed rotating black hole configurations. Only one configuration, the rotating Nariai limit, has the black hole and cosmological horizons both in thermal and rotational equilibrium, in that both the temperatures and angular velocities of the two horizons coincide. The thermal evolution of the spacetime is shown to lead to the pure de Sitter spacetime, which is the most entropic configuration. We then provide a comprehensive study of the wave equation for a massless scalar in the rotating Nariai geometry. The absorption cross section at the black hole horizon is computed and a condition is found for when the scattering becomes superradiant. The boundary-to-boundary correlators at finite temperature are computed at future infinity. The quasinormal modes are obtained in explicit form. Finally, we obtain an expression for the expectation value of the number of particles produced at future infinity starting from a vacuum state with no incoming particles at past infinity. Some of our results are used to provide further evidence for a recent holographic proposal between the rotating Nariai geometry and a two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Asymptotic Symmetries and Charges in De Sitter Space

The asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) at future null infinity (I^+) of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is defined and shown to be given by the group of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms acting on I^+. Finite charges are constructed for each choice of ASG generator together with a two-surface on I^+. A conservation equation is derived relating the evolution of the charges with the radiation flux through I^+.

Holography and the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem

In 2+1 dimensions at finite temperature, spontaneous symmetry breaking of global symmetries is precluded by large thermal fluctuations of the order parameter. The holographic correspondence implies that analogous effects must also occur in 3+1 dimensional theories with gauged symmetries in certain curved spacetimes with horizon. By performing a one loop computation in the background of a holographic superconductor, we show that bulk quantum fluctuations wash out the classical order parameter at sufficiently large distance scales. The low temperature phase is seen to exhibit algebraic long range order. Beyond the specific example we study, holography suggests that IR singular quantum fluctuations of the fields and geometry will play an interesting role for many 3+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes with planar horizon.

Sailing from Warped AdS_3 to Warped dS_3 in Topologically Massive Gravity

Three-dimensional warped anti-de Sitter space in topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant has been proposed to be holographically dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We extend this proposal to both positive and vanishing values of the cosmological constant where stretched warped anti-de Sitter space is found to be a solution. For positive cosmological constant, another class of warped solutions is obtained by a spacelike (timelike) line fibration over Lorentzian (Euclidean) two-dimensional de Sitter space. These solutions exhibit a cosmological horizon and Hawking temperature much like de Sitter space. Global identifications of this warped de Sitter space may contain a horizon in addition to the cosmological one. At a degenerate point, warped de Sitter space becomes a fibration over two-dimensional flat space. Finally, we study scalar waves in these backgrounds. Scalars in stretched warped anti-de Sitter space exhibit superradiance which can be interpreted as Schwinger pair production of charged particles in two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space.

The Curious Case of Null Warped Space

We initiate a comprehensive study of a set of solutions of topologically massive gravity known as null warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes. These are pp-wave extensions of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We first perform a careful analysis of the linearized stability of black holes in these spacetimes. We find two qualitatively different types of solutions to the linearized equations of motion: the first set has an exponential time dependence, the second - a polynomial time dependence. The solutions polynomial in time induce severe pathologies and moreover survive at the non-linear level. In order to make sense of these geometries, it is thus crucial to impose appropriate boundary conditions. We argue that there exists a consistent set of boundary conditions that allows us to reject the above pathological modes from the physical spectrum. The asymptotic symmetry group associated to these boundary conditions consists of a centrally-extended Virasoro algebra. Using this central charge we can account for the entropy of the black holes via Cardy's formula. Finally, we note that the black hole spectrum is chiral and prove a Birkoff theorem showing that there are no other stationary axisymmetric black holes with the specified asymptotics. We extend most of the analysis to a larger family of pp-wave black holes which are related to Schrödinger spacetimes with critical exponent z.

Holography at an Extremal De Sitter Horizon

Rotating maximal black holes in four-dimensional de Sitter space, for which the outer event horizon coincides with the cosmological horizon, have an infinite near-horizon region described by the rotating Nariai metric. We show that the asymptotic symmetry group at the spacelike future boundary of the near-horizon region contains a Virasoro algebra with a real, positive central charge. This is evidence that quantum gravity in a rotating Nariai background is dual to a two-dimensional Euclidean conformal field theory. These results are related to the Kerr/CFT correspondence for extremal black holes, but have two key differences: one of the black hole event horizons has been traded for the cosmological horizon, and the near-horizon geometry is a fiber over dS_2 rather than AdS_2.

Hopfing and Puffing Warped Anti-de Sitter Space

Three dimensional spacelike warped anti-de Sitter space is studied in the context of Einstein theories of gravity and string theory, where there is no gravitational Chern-Simons term in the action. We propose that it is holographically dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory with equal left and right moving central charges. Various checks of the central charges are offered, based on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the stretched warped black holes and warped self-dual solutions. The proposed central charges are applied to compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the Hopf T-dual of six-dimensional dyonic black strings which have a near horizon consisting of three dimensional warped anti-de Sitter space times a three-sphere. We find that the Hopf T-duality is a map between thermal states with equal entropy of the CFTs dual to the dyonic black string and the Hopf T-dualized black string.
