Dynamics of a bond-disordered $S=1$ quantum magnet near $z=1$ criticality

Neutron scattering is used to study NiCl$_{2-2x}$Br$_{2x}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=0.06$, a bond-disordered modification of the well-known gapped $S=1$ antiferromagnetic quantum spin system NiCl$_{2}\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$. The magnetic excitation spectrum throughout Brillouin zone is mapped out at $T=60$ mK using high-resolution time-of-flight spectroscopy. It is found that the dispersion of spin excitation is renormalized, as compared to that in the parent compound. The lifetime of excitations near the bottom of the band is substantially decreased. No localized states are found below the gap energy $Δ\simeq0.2$ meV. At the same time, localized zero wave vector states are detected above the top of the band. The results are consistent with a more or less continuous random distribution of bond strengths, and a discrete, possibly bimodal, distribution of single-ion anisotropies in the disordered material.

Giant dielectric nonlinearities at a magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation

We experimentally investigate the dielectric response of the low-dimensional gapped quantum magnet Cu$_2$Cl$_{4}\cdot$H$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$ near a magnetic field-induced quantum critical point, which separates the quantum-disordered and helimagnetic ground states. The observed magnetocapacitive effect originates from an improper ferroelectric nature of the transition, which itself is perhaps one of the best known realizations of Bose--Einstein condensation of magnons. Despite that, we find that the magnetocapacitive effect associated with the transition exhibits huge and very unusual anharmonicities.

Critical exponents and intrinsic broadening of the field-induced transition in NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$

The field-induced ordering transition in the quantum spin system NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ is studied by means of neutron diffraction, AC magnetometry and relaxation calorimetry. The interpretation of the data is strongly influenced by a finite distribution of transition fields in the samples, which was present but disregarded in previous studies. Taking this effect into account, we find that the order-parameter critical exponent is inconsistent with the BEC universality class even at temperatures below 100 mK. All results are discussed in comparison with previous measurements and with recent similar studies of disordered Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$.

Criticality in a disordered quantum antiferromagnet by neutron diffraction

Field-induced magnetic ordering in the structurally disordered quantum magnets Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=8$% and 13%, is studied by means of neutron diffraction. The order parameter critical exponent is found to be very close to its value $β=0.5$ expected for magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation in the absence of disorder. This result applies to temperatures down to 40 mK, and a 1 T range in magnetic field. The crossover exponent is found to be $ϕ\sim 0.4$, for temperature ranges as small as 300 mK. Possible reasons for a discrepancy with recent numerical simulations and bulk measurements are discussed.

Magnetic-field induced multiferroicity in a quantum critical frustrated spin liquid

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to check for the onset of polar order in the quasi one-dimensional quantum spin system Sul-Cu2Cl4 when passing from the spin-liquid state into the ordered spiral phase in an external magnetic field. We find clear evidence for multiferroicity in this material and treat in detail its H-T phase diagram close to the quantum-critical regime.

Crystals for neutron scattering studies of quantum magnetism

We review a strategy for targeted synthesis of large single crystal samples of prototype quantum magnets for inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Four case studies of organic copper halogenide S=1/2 systems are presented. They are meant to illustrate that exciting experimental results pertaining to forefront many-body quantum physics can be obtained on samples grown using very simple techniques, standard laboratory equipment, and almost no experience in in advanced crystal growth techniques.

Disorder instability of the magnon condensate in a frustrated spin ladder

The effect of disorder is studied on the field-induced quantum phase transition in the frustrated spin-ladder compound H8C4SO2Cu2(Cl[1-x]Brx)4 using bulk magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The parent material (x=0) is a quantum spin liquid, which in applied fields is known to form a magnon condensate with long-range helimagnetic order. We show that bond randomness introduced by a chemical substitution on the non-magnetic halogene site destroys this phase transition at very low concentrations, already for x=0.01. The extreme fragility of the magnon condensate is attributed to random frustration in the incommensurate state.

DUAL Gamma-Ray Mission

Gamma-ray astronomy presents an extraordinary scientific potential for the study of the most powerful sources and the most violent events in the Universe. In order to take full advantage of this potential, the next generation of instrumentation for this domain will have to achieve an improvement in sensitivity over present technologies of at least an order of magnitude. The DUAL mission concept takes up this challenge in two complementary ways: a very long observation of the entire sky, combined with a large collection area for simultaneous observations of Type Ia SNe. While the Wide-Field Compton Telescope (WCT) accumulates data from the full gamma-ray sky (0.1-10 MeV) over the entire mission lifetime, the Laue-Lens Telescope (LLT) focuses on 56Co emission from SNe Ia (0.8-0.9 MeV), collecting gamma-rays from its large area crystal lens onto the WCT. Two separated spacecraft flying in formation will maintain the DUAL payloads at the lens' focal distance.
