Magnetic phase transitions in SmCoAsO

Magnetization, x-ray diffraction and specific-heat measurements reveal that SmCoAsO undergoes three magnetic phase transitions. A ferromagnetic transition attributed to the Co ions, emerges at TC=57 K with a small saturation moment of 0.15muB/Co. Reorientation of the Co moment to an antiferromagnetic state is obtained at TN2=45 K. The relative high paramagnetic effective moment Peff=1.57 MuB/Co indicates an itinerant ferromagnetic state of the Co sublattice. The third magnetic transition at TN1=5 K is observed clearly in the specific-heat study only. Both magnetic and 57Fe Mossbauer studies show that substitution of small quantities of Fe for Co was unsuccessful.

Role of Carbon in Enhancing the Performance of MgB2 superconductor

The enhancement of the critical current density (Jc(H)) of carbon and nano-SiC doped MgB2 is presented and compared. The upper critical field (Hc2) being determined from resistivity under magnetic field experiments is though improved for both C substitution and nano-SiC addition the same is more pronounced for the former. In MgB2-xCx carbon is substituted for boron that induces disorder in the boron network and acts as internal pinning centres. The optimal Jc(H) values are obtained for x = 0.1 sample . In case of nano-SiC doped in MgB2, the Jc(H) improves more profoundly and two simultaneous mechanisms seems responsible to this enhancement. Highly reactive nano-SiC releases free carbon atom, which gets easily incorporated into the MgB2 lattice to act as intrinsic pinning centres. Further enhancement is observed for higher nano-SiC concentrations, where the un-reacted components serve as additional extrinsic pinning centres.

Superconductivity in SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x = 0.0 to 0.30)

We report synthesis, structural details and magnetization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with x ranging from 0.0 to 0.30. It is found that Co substitutes fully at Fe site in SmFeAsO in an iso-structural lattice with slightly compressed cell. The parent compound exhibited known spin density wave (SDW) character below at around 140 K. Successive doping of Co at Fe site suppressed the SDW transition for x = 0.05 and later induced superconductivity for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively at 14, 15.5 and 9K. The lower critical field as seen from magnetization measurements is below 200Oe. The appearance of bulk superconductivity is established by wide open isothermal magnetization M(H) loops. Superconductivity is not observed for higher content of Co i.e. x = 0.30. Clearly the Co substitution at Fe site in SmFe1-xCoxAsO diminishes the Fe SDW character, introduces bulk superconductivity for x between 0.10 and 0.20 and finally becomes non-superconducting for x above 0.20. The Fe2+ site Co3+ substitution injects mobile electrons to the system and superconductivity appears, however direct substitution introduces simultaneous disorder in superconducting FeAs layer and thus superconductivity disappears for higher content of Co.

Synthesis and Physical Properties of FeSe1/2Te1/2 Superconductor

One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.8008(10) and c = 6.0187 (15) A. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg Landau (GL) theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to be = 1840 kOe for the 90% of resistive transition. A heat capacity measurement revealed bulk superconductivity by a hump at Tc near 13 K, and an expected decrease was observed under an applied magnetic field.

Synthesis of SmFeAsO by an Easy and Versatile Route and its Physical Property Characterization

We report synthesis, structure, electrical transport and heat capacity of SmFeAsO. The title compound is synthesized by one-step encapsulation of stoichiometric FeAs, Sm, and Sm2O3 in an evacuated (10-5 Torr) quartz tube by prolong (72 hours) annealing at 1100oC. The as synthesized compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with P4/nmm space group having lattice parameters a = 3.93726(33) A and c = 8.49802(07) A. The resistance (R-T) measurements on the compound exhibited ground state spin-density-wave (SDW)-like metallic steps below 140 K. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements on the title compound, showed an anomaly at around 140 K, which is reminiscent of the SDW ordering of the compound. At lower temperatures the CP(T) shows a clear peak at around 4.5 K. At lower temperature below 20 K, Cp(T) is also measured under an applied field of 7 Tesla. It is concluded that the CP(T) peak at 4.5 K is due to the anti-ferromagnetic(AFM) ordering of Sm3+ spins. These results are in confirmation with ordering of Sm in Sm2-xCexCuO4.

Non-magnetic pair-breaking effect on La(Fe_{1-x}Zn_{x})AsO_{0.85} studied by NMR and NQR

$^{75}$As and $^{139}$La NMR and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on Zn-substituted LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$ have been performed to investigate the Zn-impurity effects microscopically. Although superconductivity in LaFeAsO$_{0.85}$ disappears by 3% Zn substitution, we found that NMR/NQR spectra and NMR physical quantities in the normal state are hardly changed, indicating that the crystal structure and electronic states are not modified by Zn substitution. Our results suggest that the suppression of superconductivity by Zn substitution is not due to the change of the normal-state properties, but due to strong non-magnetic pair-breaking effect to superconductivity.

Sr3Co2O6: a possible frustrated spin-chain material

A dense phase of a post-layered perovskite Sr3Co2O6 was created by a high-pressure and high-temperature synthetic route and quenched to ambient conditions. The structure of Sr3Co2O6 was determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Sr3Co2O6 crystallizes in the K4CdCl6-type structure (an infinite chain-type structure), which is 6% denser than the known, iso-compositional layered perovskite Sr3Co2O7-d (d~1). The K4CdCl6-type Sr3Co2O6 shows complex magnetic behavior reflecting the spin-chain nature as well as the analogue oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6, whose microscopic magnetic origin is still highly debated.

Anomalous pressure effect on the magnetic ordering in multiferroic BiMnO3

We report the magnetic field dependent dc magnetization and the pressure-dependent (pmax ~ 16 kbar) ac susceptibilities Xp(T) on both powder and bulk multiferroic BiMnO3 samples, synthesized in different batches under high pressure. A clear ferromagnetic (FM) transition is observed at TC ~ 100 K, and increases with magnetic field. The magnetic hysteresis behavior is similar to that of a soft ferromagnet. Ac susceptibility data indicate that both the FM peak and its temperature (TC) decrease simultaneously with increasing pressure. Interestingly, above a certain pressure (9 ~ 11 kbar), another peak appears at Tp ~ 93 K, which also decreases with increasing pressure, with both these peaks persisting over some intermediate pressure range (9 ~ 13 kbar). The FM peak disappears with further application of pressure; however, the second peak survives until present pressure limit (pmax ~ 16 kbar). These features are considered to originate from the complex interplay of the magnetic and orbital structure of BiMnO3 being affected by pressure.

Large decrease in the critical temperature of superconducting LaFeAsO0.85 compounds doped with 3% atomic weight of nonmagnetic Zn impurities

We observed a large decrease of Tc by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K), confirmed by measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Hall coefficient, and an electron probe micro-analysis. The rate ~9 K/% is remarkably higher than observations regarding nonmagnetic impurities. The Tc suppression is likely due to pair-breaking caused by scatterings associated with highly localized electronic state of Zn doped into the Fe2As2 layer. If this is true, the Zn result well accords with the theoretical prediction that suggests a sign reversal s-wave pairing model for the Fe pnictide superconductors, unlike other nonmagnetic impurity results.

Magnetic and electrical properties and carrier doping effects on the Fe-based host compound Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6

Additional charge carriers were introduced to the iron oxyarsenide Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 under a high-pressure condition, followed by measurements of electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetic susceptibility. The host compound Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 shows metallic conductivity down to ~200 K and turns to show a semiconducting-like conductivity accompanied by a positive magneto-resistance (22% at 70 kOe). Although the carrier density is comparable at 300 K (5.9x1021 cm-3) with that of the other Fe-based superconductors, no superconductivity appears down to 2 K. This is primarily because the net carrier density decreases over 3 orders of magnitude on cooling and additionally a possible magnetic order at ~120 K prevents carriers from pairing. The properties were altered largely by introducing the additional carriers.

Multiple magnetic transitions in multiferroic BiMnO3

The magnetic phase variations under hydrostatic pressure on multiferroic BiMnO3 have been examined by the dc magnetization [Mg(T)], magnetic hysteresis [Ueff(H)], and ac susceptibility [X'g(T)]. Three magnetic transitions, manifested as kinks I, II, and III on the Mg(T)], curves, were identified at 8.7 and 9.4 kbar. With increasing pressure, transition temperatures of kink I and kink II TkI and TkII tend to decrease, but the temperature of kink III TkIII showed more complex variation. Under increasing magnetic field, TkI and TkII increase; however, TkIII decreases. Combining [Mg(T)] curves with Ueff(H) and X'g(T), more detailed properties of these three kinks would be shown as follows. Kink I is a long-range soft ferromagnetic transition which occurs at TkI 100 K under ambient pressure but is suppressed completely at 11.9 kbar. Kink II emerges at 8.7 kbar along with TkII 93 K which is also long-range soft ferromagnetic but canted in nature. Kink III, a canted antiferromagnetic transition, appears at TkIII 72.5 K along with kink II also at 8.7 kbar. The proposed phase diagrams at ambient pressure, 9.4 and 11.9 kbar show the different magnetic features of BiMnO3. These findings are believed to result from the variations in crystal structure influenced by the external pressure. These results also indicate the common complicated

Continuous metal-insulator transition of the antiferromagnetic perovskite NaOsO3

Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. It is most likely that the antiferromagnetic correlation plays an essential role of the gap opening.

Evidence for large electric polarization from collinear magnetism in TmMnO3

There has been tremendous research activity in the field of magneto-electric (ME) multiferroics after Kimura et al. [1] showed that antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric order coexist in orthorhom- bically distorted perovskite TbMnO3 and are strongly coupled. It is now generally accepted that ferroelectricity in TbMnO3 is induced by magnetic long range order that breaks the symmetry of the crystal and creates a polar axis [2]. One remaining key question is whether magnetic order can induce ferroelectric polarization that is as large as that of technologically useful materials. We show that ferroelectricity in orthorhombic (o) TmMnO3 is induced by collinear magnetic order, and that the lower limit for its electric polarization is larger than in previously investigated orthorhombic heavy rare-earth manganites. The temperature dependence of the lattice constants provides fur- ther evidence of large spin-lattice coupling effects. Our experiments suggest that the ferroelectric polarization in the orthorhombic perovskites with commensurate magnetic ground states could pass the 1 microC/cm2 threshold, as suggested by theory [3, 4].

Superconducting properties of the oxygen-vacant iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO1-x from underdoped to overdoped compositions

A wide-range doping was achieved by a high-pressure method for TbFeAsO1-x from "under doped" to "over doped" superconducting compositions throughout the optimized superconductivity (Tc of 44 K). Tc vs. lattice constant shows a dome-shaped feature, while Tc vs. the lattice constant likely follows a unique empirical curve over the doping range. The relatively large amount of oxygen vacancies up to 0.3 per the formula unit was introduced possibly because of the smaller replacement Tb than the other Ln (rare-earth element) in the LnFeAsO1-x system.

Impact of rare earth magnetic moment on ordering of Ru in Sr2RuREO6 (RE = Gd and Eu)

We report synthesis and magnetization of Sr2RuREO6 (RE/Ru-211O6) with RE = Gd and Eu. Both Gd,Eu/Ru-211O6 are formed in distorted perovskite-type single phase with monoclinic P21/n space group. Magnetization (M/T) measurements exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments for both Gd and Eu compounds at TN of around 30 K due to super-exchange Ru-O-O-Ru interaction. Interestingly enough, detailed M/H plots of Gd/Ru-211O6 exhibited, the development of a ferromagnetic (FM) component at 20 K. Further at below 10 K, the FM component disappears and rather an spin freezing field (HSF) of around 1000 Oe is seen at 5 K. In case of Eu/Ru-211O6, the basic antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments remains invariant down to 5 K, and the appearance of FM component is not seen. It seems that the high magnetic moment of 8mB for Gd3+ influences the AFM ordering of Ru in case of Gd/Ru-211O6.

Possible Spin-triplet Superconductivity in NaxCoO2yH2O - 59Co NMR Study

We report 59Co NMR studies on the magnetically oriented powder samples of Co-oxide superconductors NaxCoO2yH2O with Tc ~ 4.7 K. From two-dimensional powder pattern in the NMR spectrum, the ab-plane Knight shift in the normal state was estimated by the magnetic field dependence of second-order quadrupole shifts at various temperatures. Below 50 K, the Knight shift shows a Curie-Weiss-like temperature dependence, similarly to the bulk magnetic susceptibility chi. From the analysis of so-called K-chi plot, the spin and the orbital components of K and the positive hyperfine coupling constant were estimated. The onset temperature of superconducting transition in the Knight shift does not change so much in an applied magnetic field up to 7 T, which is consistent with the reported high upper critical field Hc2. The Knight shift at 7 T shows an invariant behavior below Tc. No coherence peak just below Tc was observed in the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in both cases of NMR and NQR. We conclude that the invariant behavior of the Knight shift below Tc and unconventional behaviors of 1/T possibly indicate the spin-triplet superconductivity with p- or f-wave symmetry.

Laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of NaxCoO2.yH2O:Evidence for pseudogap formation

We have studied the temperature-dependent electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of the layered cobaltate superconductor, Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O, and related materials, using laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We observe the formation of a pseudogap with an energy scale of ~ 20 meV in Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O and Na0.35CoO2.0.7H2O, which is clearly absent in Na0.7CoO2. The energy scale of the pseudogap is larger than the expected value for the superconducting gap, suggesting an additional competing order parameter at low temperatures. We discuss implications of the pseudogap in relation to available transport and magnetic susceptibility results.

Magnetization study of RuSr2Y1.5Ce 0.5Cu2O10 (Ru-1222)

We have studied the magnetic properties of the non-superconducting RuSr2Ln1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (Ln=Y, Dy and Ho, Ru-1222) compounds synthesized under high pressure (6 Gpa) at elevated temperature. The materials become magnetically ordered at TM =152(2) K regardless of Ln. The wide ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loops which open at 5 K, close themselves around Tirr= 90-100 K and the remanent magnetizations (Mrem) and the coercive fields (HC) become zero. Surprisingly, at Tirr<T< TM a reappearance of the Mrem and HC (with a peak at 120-130 K) is observed for all three samples studied. For the non-magnetic Ln=Y compound, the extracted saturation moment at 5 K and the effective paramagnetic moment are is 0.75 and 2.05 mB /Ru, values which are close to the expected 1 mB and 1.73 mB respectively, for the low-spin state of Ru5+. We argue that the Ru-1222 system becomes (i) anti-ferromagnetically (AFM) ordered at TM. In this range a metamagnetic transition is induced by the applied field (ii). At Tirr < TM, weak-ferromagnetism (W-FM) is induced by the canting of the Ru moments.

Superconductivity of up to 80 K for Tb-123 - TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7

The Tb-123 phase has been synthesized in single-phase form with the composition TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7 by solid-state reaction route and its phase purity is confirmed by neutron powder diffraction experiments. As-synthesized sample does not show superconductivity down to 5 K. An unusually high antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) of around 7 K is seen for Tb. After 120-atm-O2 post-annealing, bulk superconductivity is achieved in the compound at around 30 K, without any significant effect on TN. To achieve higher oxygen content and higher Tc, the as-synthesized sample is subjected to high-pressure oxygenation (HPO) carried out in a closed cell at 5 GPa and 400 oC in the presence of AgO as an excess-oxygen source. This sample exhibited superconductivity onset at around 80 K with a Meissner fraction of larger than 10 % at 5 K. Our observation of superconductivity at 80 K is the highest Tc to-date among the Tb-123 compounds.
