Electron-phonon interaction and pairing mechanism in superconducting Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene

Using the {\it ab initio} anisotropic Eliashberg theory including Coulomb interactions, we investigate the electron-phonon interaction and the pairing mechanism in the recently-reported superconducting Ca-intercalated bilayer graphene. We find that C$_6$CaC$_6$ can support phonon-mediated superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}=$6.8-8.1~K, in good agreement with experimental data. Our calculations indicate that the low-energy Ca$_{xy}$ vibrations are critical to the pairing, and that it should be possible to resolve two distinct superconducting gaps on the electron and hole Fermi surface pockets.

Two-gap superconductivity in heavily n-doped graphene: ab initio Migdal-Eliashberg theory

Graphene is the only member of the carbon family from zero- to three-dimensional materials for which superconductivity has not been observed yet. At this time, it is not clear whether the quest for superconducting graphene is hindered by technical challenges, or else by the fluctuation of the order parameter in two dimensions. In this area, ab initio calculations are useful to guide experimental efforts by narrowing down the search space. In this spirit, we investigate from first principles the possibility of inducing superconductivity in doped graphene using the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory powered by Wannier-Fourier interpolation. To address a best-case scenario, we consider both electron and hole doping at high carrier densities, so as to align the Fermi level to a van Hove singularity. In these conditions, we find superconducting gaps of $s$-wave symmetry, with a slight anisotropy induced by the trigonal warping, and, in the case of $n$-doped graphene, an unexpected two-gap structure reminiscent of MgB$_2$. Our Migdal-Eliashberg calculations suggest that the observation of superconductivity at low temperature should be possible for $n$-doped graphene at carrier densities exceeding $10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$.

Anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory using Wannier functions

We combine the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory with electron-phonon interpolation based on maximally-localized Wannier functions, in order to perform reliable and highly accurate calculations of the anisotropic temperature-dependent superconducting gap and critical temperature of conventional superconductors. Compared with the widely used McMillan approximation, our methodology yields a more comprehensive and detailed description of superconducting properties, and is especially relevant for the study of layered or low-dimensional systems as well as systems with complex Fermi surfaces. In order to validate our method we perform calculations on two prototypical superconductors, Pb and MgB$_2$, and obtain good agreement with previous studies.

New Superconducting and Semiconducting Fe-B Compounds Predicted with an Ab Initio Evolutionary Search

New candidate ground states at 1:4, 1:2, and 1:1 compositions are identified in the well-known Fe-B system via a combination of ab initio high-throughput and evolutionary searches. We show that the proposed oP12-FeB2 stabilizes by a break up of 2D boron layers into 1D chains while oP10-FeB4 stabilizes by a distortion of a 3D boron network. The uniqueness of these configurations gives rise to a set of remarkable properties: oP12-FeB2 is expected to be the first semiconducting metal diboride and oP10-FeB4 is shown to have the potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a Tc of 15-20 K.

Possible routes for synthesis of new boron-rich Fe-B and Fe(1-x)Cr(x)B4 compounds

We use ab initio calculations to examine thermodynamic factors that could promote the formation of recently proposed unique oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 compounds. We demonstrate that these compact boron-rich phases are stabilized further under pressure. We also show that chromium tetraboride is more stable in the new oP10 rather than the reported oI10 structure which opens up the possibility of realizing an oP10-Fe(x)Cr(1-x)B4 pseudobinary material. In addition to exhibiting remarkable electronic features, oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 are expected to be harder than the known Fe-B compounds commonly used for hard coating applications.
