Spin waves and revised crystal structure of honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2IrO3, a candidate for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice. We observe spin-wave excitations below 5 meV with a dispersion that can be accounted for by including substantial further-neighbor exchanges that stabilize zig-zag magnetic order. The onset of long-range magnetic order below 15.3 K is confirmed via the observation of oscillations in zero-field muon-spin rotation experiments. Combining single-crystal diffraction and density functional calculations we propose a revised crystal structure model with significant departures from the ideal 90 deg Ir-O-Ir bonds required for dominant Kitaev exchange.

Stability of 41 metal - boron systems at 0 GPa and 30 GPa from first principles

A multitude of observed boron-based materials have outstanding superconducting, mechanical, and refractory properties. Yet, the structure, the composition, and the very existence of some reported metal boride (M-B) compounds have been a subject of extensive debate. This density functional theory work seeks to set a baseline for current understanding of known metal boride phases as well as to identify new synthesizable candidates. We have generated a database of over 12,000 binary M-B entries for pressures of 0 and 30 GPa producing the largest scan of compositions and systems in this materials class. The 175 selected crystal structures include both observed prototypes and new ones found with our evolutionary ground state search. The metals considered are: Al, Ag, Au, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Hf, Hg, Ir, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, Os, Pd, Pt, Rb, Re, Rh, Ru, Sc, Sr, Ta, Tc, Ti, V, W, Y, Zn, and Zr. Based on the formation energy calculated at zero pressure and temperature 4 new M-B phases or structures have been predicted, while a number of previously reported compounds have been shown to be unstable. At 30 GPa, changes in the convex hulls are expected to occur in 18 out of 41 M-B systems, which is used to indicate regions of the periodic table (for metal borides) that require further investigation from the community. Analysis of the collected information has revealed a nearly linear relationship between the magnetic moment per atom and the metal content for all the Fe-B, Co-B, and Ni-B structures within 0.15 eV/atom of the stability tie line. Both GGA-PBE and LDA-PW functionals were used to provide an understanding of the systematic error introduced by the choice of the exchange-correlation functional.

New Superconducting and Semiconducting Fe-B Compounds Predicted with an Ab Initio Evolutionary Search

New candidate ground states at 1:4, 1:2, and 1:1 compositions are identified in the well-known Fe-B system via a combination of ab initio high-throughput and evolutionary searches. We show that the proposed oP12-FeB2 stabilizes by a break up of 2D boron layers into 1D chains while oP10-FeB4 stabilizes by a distortion of a 3D boron network. The uniqueness of these configurations gives rise to a set of remarkable properties: oP12-FeB2 is expected to be the first semiconducting metal diboride and oP10-FeB4 is shown to have the potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a Tc of 15-20 K.

Possible routes for synthesis of new boron-rich Fe-B and Fe(1-x)Cr(x)B4 compounds

We use ab initio calculations to examine thermodynamic factors that could promote the formation of recently proposed unique oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 compounds. We demonstrate that these compact boron-rich phases are stabilized further under pressure. We also show that chromium tetraboride is more stable in the new oP10 rather than the reported oI10 structure which opens up the possibility of realizing an oP10-Fe(x)Cr(1-x)B4 pseudobinary material. In addition to exhibiting remarkable electronic features, oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 are expected to be harder than the known Fe-B compounds commonly used for hard coating applications.

Van der Waals interactions in the ground state of Mg(BH4)2 from density functional theory

In order to resolve an outstanding discrepancy between experiment and theory regarding the ground-state structure of Mg(BH4)2, we examine the importance of long-range dispersive interactions on the compound's thermodynamic stability. Careful treatment of the correlation effects within a recently developed nonlocal van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) leads to a good agreement with experiment, favoring the α-Mg(BH4)2 phase (P6122) and a closely related Mn(BH4)2-prototype phase (P3112) over a large set of polymorphs at low temperatures. Our study demonstrates the need to go beyond (semi)local density functional approximations for a reliable description of crystalline high-valent metal borohydrides.
