Monitoring of structural changes in materials under the exposure of ionization radiation using a vibrating wire

Ionizing radiation (X-rays, proton beams) causes structural changes in materials. If a vibrating metallic wire is subjected to such radiation, the natural frequency of the wire is affected as a result of changes in the elastic characteristics of the material. This paper presents the results of experiments on the impact of X-ray radiation in the range of 100-165 keV and a proton beam with energy 18 MeV on the structure of stainless steel wire. In case of proton irradiation an irreversible change in the wire frequency was observed, which indicated residual changes in the structure of the wire material. X-ray diffractometry methods were used to analyze the structural changes.

Electric field lines of an arbitrarily moving charged particle

In this paper it is shown that the equations of electric field lines of an arbitrarily moving charged particle in the general case are reduced to homogeneous, linear differential equations with variable coefficients. For trajectories where the expression b=Zeta/(Gamma*Kappa) is a constant (Zeta - orbit torsion, Kappa - orbit curvature, Gamma - Lorentz factor of a particle) these equations are reduced to homogeneous, linear differential equations with constant coefficients. This case, in particular, includes all planar trajectories. This paper presents solutions of the equations of electric field lines and corresponding illustrations both in the orbital plane and outside it for a charge moving in a flat monochromatic linearly polarized wave.

Proposal of thermal neutron flux monitors based on vibrating wire

Two types of neutron monitors with fine spatial resolution are proposed based on vibrating wire. In the first type, neutrons interact with the vibrating wire, heat it, and lead to the change of natural frequency, which can be precisely measured. To increase the heat deposition during the neutron scattering, use of gadolinium layer which has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section among all elements is proposed. The second type of the monitor uses vibrating wire as a resonant target. Besides the measurement of beam profile according to the average signal, the differential signal synchronized with the wire oscillations defines the gradient of beam profile. Spatial resolution of the monitor is defined by the diameter of the wire.
