Remarkably robust and correlated coherence and antiferromagnetism in (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2

We present magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements on (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2 single crystals (0 ≤x≤\leq x\leq 1). With La substitution, the antiferromagnetic temperature TNT_N is suppressed in an almost linear fashion and moves below 0.36 K, the base temperature of our measurements for x>x> 0.8. Surprisingly, in addition to robust antiferromagnetism, the system also shows low temperature coherent scattering below TcohT_{coh} up to ∼\sim 0.9 of La, indicating a small percolation limit ∼\sim 9%\% of Ce that separates a coherent regime from a single-ion Kondo impurity regime. TcohT_{coh} as a function of magnetic field was found to have different behavior for xx< 0.9 and xx> 0.9. Remarkably, (Tcoh)2(T_{coh})^2 at HH = 0 was found to be linearly proportional to TNT_N. The jump in the magnetic specific heat δCmδC_{m} at TNT_N as a function of TK/TNT_K/T_N for (Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_x)Cu2_2Ge2_2 follows the theoretical prediction based on the molecular field calculation for the SS = 1/2 resonant level model.

Successive magnetic field-induced transitions and colossal magnetoelectric effect in Ni3_{3}TeO6_{6}

We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni3_3TeO6_6 that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 μμC/cm2^2, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and clarify the physics behind the 52 T transition. The high-field transition involves a competition between multiple different exchange interactions which drives the polarization change through the exchange-striction mechanism. The resultant spin structure is rather counter-intuitive and complex, thus providing new insights on design principles for materials with strong magnetoelectric coupling.

Crystal growth and annealing study of fragile, non-bulk superconductivity in YFe2_2Ge2_2

We investigated the occurrence and nature of superconductivity in single crystals of YFe2_2Ge2_2 grown out of Sn flux by employing x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements. We found that the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of single crystals can be greatly improved, reaching as high as ∼\sim60, by decanting the crystals from the molten Sn at ∼\sim350∘^\circC and/or by annealing at temperatures between 550∘^\circC and 600∘^\circC. We found that samples with RRR ≳\gtrsim 34 showed resistive signatures of superconductivity with the onset of the superconducting transition Tc≈1.4T_c\approx1.4 K. RRR values vary between 35 and 65 with, on average, no systematic change in TcT_c value, indicating that systematic changes in RRR do not lead to comparable changes in TcT_c. Specific heat measurements on samples that showed clear resistive signatures of a superconducting transition did not show any signature of a superconducting phase transition, which suggests that the superconductivity observed in this compound is either some sort of filamentary, strain stabilized superconductivity associated with small amounts of stressed YFe2_2Ge2_2 (perhaps at twin boundaries or dislocations) or is a second crystallographic phase present at levels below detection capability of conventional powder x-ray techniques.

Fragile antiferromagnetism in the heavy-fermion compound YbBiPt

We report results from neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of YbBiPt that demonstrate antiferromagnetic order characterized by a propagation vector, τAFMτ_{\rm{AFM}} = (121212\frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2} \frac{1}{2}), and ordered moments that align along the [1 1 1] direction of the cubic unit cell. We describe the scattering in terms of a two-Gaussian peak fit, which consists of a narrower component that appears below TN ≈0.4T_{\rm{N}}~\approx 0.4 K and corresponds to a magnetic correlation length of ξn≈ξ_{\rm{n}} \approx 80 A˚\rmÅ, and a broad component that persists up to T∗≈T^*\approx 0.7 K and corresponds to antiferromagnetic correlations extending over ξb≈ξ_{\rm{b}} \approx 20 A˚\rmÅ. Our results illustrate the fragile magnetic order present in YbBiPt and provide a path forward for microscopic investigations of the ground states and fluctuations associated with the purported quantum critical point in this heavy-fermion compound.

Multiferroicity with coexisting isotropic and anisotropic spins in Ca3_{3}Co2−x_{2-x}Mnx_{x}O6_{6}

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca3_3Co2−x_{2-x}Mnx_{x}O6_6 (x∼x \sim0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization (MM), magnetostriction (LL(HH)/LL), electric polarization (PP), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured MM and ΔΔLL/LL up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co2+^{2+} and Mn4+^{4+} ions, we find evidence for SS = 3/2 spins for both ions with no magnetic field-induced spin-state crossovers. Our data also indicate that Mn4+^{4+} spins are quasi-isotropic and develop components in the abab-plane in applied magnetic fields of 10 T. These spins cant until saturation at 85 T whereas the Ising Co2+^{2+} spins saturate by 25 T. Furthermore, our results imply that mechanism for suppression of electric polarization with magnetic fields near 10 T is flopping of the Mn4+^{4+} spins into the abab-plane, indicating that appropriate models must include the coexistence of Ising and quasi-isotropic spins.

Magnetic Field Induced Transition in Vanadium Spinels

We study vanadium spinels AAV2_2O4_4 (AA = Cd, Mg) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. A jump in magnetization at μ0H≈μ_0 H \approx 40 T is observed in the single-crystal MgV2_2O4_4, indicating a field induced quantum phase transition between two distinct magnetic orders. In the multiferroic CdV2_2O4_4, the field-induced transition is accompanied by a suppression of the electric polarization. By modeling the magnetic properties in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels, we show that both features of the field-induced transition can be successfully explained by including the effects of the local trigonal crystal field.

Magnetic field tuned quantum criticality of heavy fermion system YbPtBi

In this paper, we present the systematic measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Yb-based heavy fermion YbPtBi for temperatures down to 0.02 K with magnetic fields up to 140 kOe to address the possible existence of a field-tuned quantum critical point. Measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, Hall effect, and thermoelectric power indicate that the AFM order can be suppressed by applied magnetic field of HcH_{c} ∼\sim 4 kOe. In the H−TH-T phase diagram of YbPtBi, three regimes of its low temperature states emerges: (I) AFM state, characterized by spin density wave (SDW) like feature, which can be suppressed to TT = 0 by the relatively small magnetic field of HcH_{c} ∼\sim 4\,kOe, (II) field induced anomalous state in which the electrical resistivity follows Δρ(T)∝T1.5Δρ(T) \propto T^{1.5} between HcH_{c} and ∼\sim 8 kOe, and (III) Fermi liquid (FL) state in which Δρ(T)∝T2Δρ(T) \propto T^{2} for H≥H \geq 8 kOe. Regions I and II are separated at TT = 0 by what appears to be a quantum critical point. Whereas region III appears to be a FL associated with the hybridized 4ff states of Yb, region II may be a manifestation of a spin liquid state.

Quantum oscillations and optical conductivity in Rashba spin-splitting BiTeI

We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in single crystals of the Rashba spin-splitting compound BiTeI, from both longitudinal (Rxx(B)R_{xx}(B)) and Hall (Rxy(B)R_{xy}(B)) magnetoresistance. Under magnetic field up to 65 T, we resolved unambiguously only one frequency F=284.3±1.3F = 284.3\pm 1.3 T, corresponding to a Fermi momentum kF=0.093±0.002k_{F} = 0.093\pm 0.002Å−1^{-1}.The amplitude of oscillations is strongly suppressed by tilting magnetic field, suggesting a highly two-dimensional Fermi surface. Combining with optical spectroscopy, we show that quantum oscillations may be consistent with a bulk conduction band having a Rashba splitting momentum kR=0.046±k_{R}=0.046\pmÅ−1^{-1}.

Synthesis and physical properties of the new potassium iron selenide superconductor K0.80Fe1.76Se2

In this article we review our studies of the K0.80Fe1.76Se2 superconductor, with an attempt to elucidate the crystal growth details and basic physical properties over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic field, including anisotropic magnetic and electrical transport properties, thermodynamic, London penetration depth, magneto-optical imaging and Mossbauer measurements. We find that: (i) Single crystals of similar stoichiometry can be grown both by furnace-cooled and decanted methods; (ii) Single crystalline K0.80Fe1.76Se2 shows moderate anisotropy in both magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity and a small modulation of stoichiometry of the crystal, which gives rise to broadened transitions; (iii) The upper critical field, Hc2(T) is ~ 55 T at 2 K for H||c, manifesting a temperature dependent anisotropy that peaks near 3.6 at 27 K and drops to 2.5 by 18 K; (iv) Mossbauer measurements reveal that the iron sublattice in K0.80Fe1.76Se2 clearly exhibits magnetic order, probably of the first order, from well below Tc to its Neel temperature of Tn = 532 +/- 2 K. It is very important to note that, although, at first glance there is an apparent dilemma posed by these data: high Tc superconductivity in a near insulating, large ordered moment material, analysis indicates that the sample may well consist of two phases with the minority superconducting phase (that does not exhibit magnetic order) being finely distributed, but connected with in an antiferromagnetic, poorly conducting, matrix, essentially making a superconducting aerogel.

Thermoelectric Power of the YbT2_{2}Zn20_{20} (T = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) Heavy Fermions

The thermoelectric power, S(T)S(T), of the heavy fermions YbT2_{2}Zn20_{20} (TT = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) has been measured to characterize their strong electronic correlations. A large, negative, local minimum in S(T)S(T) with approximately -70 μμV/K is found for all compounds. From the observed local minimum, the energy scales associated with both the Kondo temperature and the crystalline electric field splitting are deduced and compared to previous specific heat measurements. At low temperatures, S(T)S(T) follows a linear temperature dependence, S(T)S(T) = αTαT, with an enhanced value of αα which is characteristic for a heavy fermion state. In the zero temperature limit, the enhanced αα value strongly correlates with the electronic specific heat coefficient, C(T)/TC(T)/T, due to the large density of states at the Fermi level.

Anisotropic Hc2 of K0.8Fe1.76Se2 determined up to 60 T

The anisotropic upper critical field, Hc2(T), curves for K0.8Fe1.76Se2 are determined over a wide range of temperatures down to 1.5 K and magnetic fields up to 60 T. Anisotropic initial slopes of Hc2 ~ -1.4 T/K and -4.6 T/K for magnetic field applied along c-axis and ab-plane, respectively, were observed. Whereas the c-axis Hc2|c(T) increases quasi-linearly with decreasing temperature, the ab-plane Hc2|ab(T) shows a flattening, starting near 25 K above 30 T. This leads to a non-monotonic temperature dependence of the anisotropy parameter γ= Hc2|ab/Hc2|c. The anisotropy parameter is ~ 2 near Tc ~ 32 K and rises to a maximum γ~ 3.6 around 27 K. For lower temperatures, γdecreases with T in a linear fashion, dropping to γ~ 2.5 by T ~ 18 K. Despite the apparent differences between the K0.8Fe1.76Se2 and (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 or Ba(Fe0.926Co0.074)2As2, in terms of the magnetic state and proximity to an insulating state, the Hc2(T) curves are remarkably similar.

Multiferroic behavior in the new double-perovskite Lu2_2MnCoO6_6

We present a new member of the multiferroic oxides, Lu2_2MnCoO6_6, which we have investigated using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, electric polarization, and dielectric constant measurements. This material possesses an electric polarization strongly coupled to a net magnetization below 35 K, despite the antiferromagnetic ordering of the S=3/2S = 3/2 Mn4+^{4+} and Co2+^{2+} spins in an ↑↑↓↓\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow configuration along the c-direction. We discuss the magnetic order in terms of a condensation of domain boundaries between ↑↑\uparrow \uparrow and ↓↓\downarrow \downarrow ferromagnetic domains, with each domain boundary producing a net electric polarization due to spatial inversion symmetry breaking. In an applied magnetic field the domain boundaries slide, controlling the size of the net magnetization, electric polarization, and magnetoelectric coupling.

Multiple regions of quantum criticality in YbAgGe

Dilation and thermopower measurements on YbAgGe, a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet, clarify and refine the magnetic field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram and reveal a field-induced phase with T-linear resistivity. On the low-H side of this phase we find evidence for a first-order transition and suggest that YbAgGe at 4.5 T may be close to a quantum critical end point. On the high-H side our results are consistent with a second-order transition suppressed to a quantum critical point near 7.2 T. We discuss these results in light of global phase diagrams proposed for Kondo lattice systems.

Phase diagram of CeVSb3 under pressure and its dependence on pressure conditions

We present temperature dependent resistivity and ac-calorimetry measurements of CeVSb3 under pressure up to 8 GPa in a Bridgman anvil cell modified to use a liquid medium and in a diamond anvil cell using argon as a pressure medium, respectively. We observe an initial increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc with pressures up to 4.5 GPa, followed by decrease of Tc on further increase of pressure and finally its disappearance, in agreement with the Doniach model. We infer a ferromagnetic quantum critical point around 7 GPa under hydrostatic pressure conditions from the extrapolation to 0 K of Tc and the maximum of the A coefficient from low temperature fits of the resistivity ρ(T)=ρ_{0}+AT^{n}. No superconductivity under pressure was observed down to 0.35 K for this compound. In addition, differences in the Tc(P) behavior when a slight uniaxial component is present are noticed and discussed and correlated to choice of pressure medium.

Structural, electronic, magnetic, and thermal properties of single-crystalline UNi0.5Sb2

We studied the properties of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) UNi0.5Sb2 (TN \approx 161 K) compound in Sb-flux grown single crystals by means of measurements of neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility (χ), specific heat (Cp), thermopower (S), thermal conductivity (κ), linear thermal expansion (ΔL/L), and electrical resistivity (ρ) under hydrostatic pressures (P) up to 22 kbar. The neutron diffraction measurements revealed that the compound crystallizes in the tetragonal P42/nmc structure, and the value of the U-moments yielded by the histograms at 25 K is \approx 1.85 \pm 0.12 μB/U-ion. In addition to the features in the bulk properties observed at TN, two other hysteretic features centered near 40 and 85 K were observed in the measurements of χ, S, ρ, and ΔL/L. Hydrostatic pressure was found to raise TN at the rate of \approx 0.76 K/kbar, while suppressing the two low temperature features. These features are discussed in the context of Fermi surface and hybridization effects.

Importance of Fermi surface topology for high temperature superconductivity in electron-doped iron arsenic superconductors

We used angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and thermoelectric power to study the poorly explored, highly overdoped side of the phase diagram of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 high temperature superconductor. Our data demonstrate that several Lifshitz transitions - topological changes of the Fermi surface - occur for large x. Tc starts to decrease with doping when the cylindrical, central hole pocket changes to ellipsoids centering at the Z point, and goes to zero before these ellipsoids disappear around x = 0.2. Changes in thermoelectric power occur at similar x-values. Beyond this doping level the central pocket changes to electron-like and superconductivity does not exist. Our observations reveal the crucial importance of the underlying Fermiology in this class of materials. A necessary condition for superconductivity is the presence of the central hole pockets rather than perfect nesting between central and corner pockets.

Neutron scattering and scaling behavior in URu2Zn20 and YbFe2Zn20

The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons.

Thermoelectric power of Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 and Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2: possible changes of Fermi surface with and without changes in electron count

Temperature-dependent, in-plane, thermoelectric power (TEP) data are presented for Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 (0 < x < 0.36) single crystals. The previously outlined x - T phase diagram for this system is confirmed. The analysis of TEP evolution with Ru-doping suggests significant changes in the electronic structure, correlations and/or scattering occurring near ~7% and ~30% of Ru-doping levels. These results are compared with an extended set of TEP data for the electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series.

Tuning Low Temperature Physical Properties of CeNiGe3_{3} by Magnetic Field

We have studied the thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of the ternary intermetallic system CeNiGe3_{3} by means of specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The specific heat data, together with the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility, was analyzed on the basis of the point charge model of crystalline electric field. The JJ\,=\,5/2 multiplet of the Ce3+^{3+} is split by the crystalline electric field (CEF) into three Kramers doublets, where the second and third doublet are separated from the first (ground state) doublet by Δ1Δ_{1} ∼\sim 100\,K and Δ2Δ_{2} ∼\sim 170\,K, respectively. In zero field CeNiGe3_{3} exhibits an antiferromangeic order below TNT_{N} = 5.0\,K. For \textbf{H}\,∥\parallel\,\textbf{a} two metamagnetic transitions are clearly evidenced between 2\,∼\sim\,4\,K from the magnetization isotherm and extended down to 0.4\,K from the magnetoresistance measurements. For \textbf{H}\,∥\parallel\,\textbf{a}, TNT_{N} shifts to lower temperature as magnetic field increases, and ultimately disappears at HcH_{c} ∼\sim 32.5\,kOe. For H > HcH\,>\,H_{c}, the electrical resistivity shows the quadratic temperature dependence (Δρ=AT2Δρ= A T^{2}). For H≫HcH \gg H_{c}, an unconventional TnT^{n}-dependence of ΔρΔρ with n>2n > 2 emerges, the exponent nn becomes larger as magnetic field increases. Although the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature in CeNiGe3_{3} can be continuously suppressed to zero, it provides an example of field tuning that does not match current simple models of Quantum criticality.
