From coalescing random walks on a torus to Kingman's coalescent

Let $\mathbb{T}^d_N$, $d\ge 2$, be the discrete $d$-dimensional torus with $N^d$ points. Place a particle at each site of $\mathbb{T}^d_N$ and let them evolve as independent, nearest-neighbor, symmetric, continuous-time random walks. Each time two particles meet, they coalesce into one. Denote by $C_N$ the first time the set of particles is reduced to a singleton. Cox [6] proved the existence of a time-scale $θ_N$ for which $C_N/θ_N$ converges to the sum of independent exponential random variables. Denote by $Z^N_t$ the total number of particles at time $t$. We prove that the sequence of Markov chains $(Z^N_{tθ_N})_{t\ge 0}$ converges to the total number of partitions in Kingman's coalescent.

A correction to the hydrodynamic limit of boundary driven exclusion processes in a super-diffusive time scale

We consider a one-dimensional, weakly asymmetric, boundary driven exclusion process on the interval $[0,N]\cap Z$ in the super-diffusive time scale $N^2 ε^{-1}_N$, where $1\ll ε^{-1}_N \ll N^{1/4}$. We assume that the external field and the chemical potentials, which fix the density at the boundaries, evolve smoothly in the macroscopic time scale. We derive an equation which describes the evolution of the density up to the order $ε_N$.

A 1D Optomechanical crystal with a complete phononic band gap

Recent years have witnessed the boom of cavity optomechanics, which exploits the confinement and coupling of optical and mechanical waves at the nanoscale. Amongst their physical implementations, optomechanical (OM) crystals built on semiconductor slabs enable the integration and manipulation of multiple OM elements in a single chip and provide GHz phonons suitable for coherent phonon manipulation. Different demonstrations of coupling of infrared photons and GHz phonons in cavities created by inserting defects on OM crystals have been performed. However, the considered structures do not show a complete phononic bandgap, which should allow longer dephasing time, since acoustic leakage is minimized. We demonstrate the excitation of acoustic modes in a 1D OM crystal properly designed to display a full phononic bandgap for acoustic modes at 4 GHz. The modes inside the complete bandgap are designed to have mechanical Q factors above 10e8 and invariant to fabrication imperfections.

Upgrade of the Control System of the IFUNAM's Pelletron Accelerator

In 1995 a 9SDH-2 Pelletron from NEC was installed at IFUNAM (Instituto de Fisica, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico). Two beam lines have been operational since then and two new lines have been built. In order to perform the planned projects in this grown facility, an upgrading of the original manual control system is required. The proposed new control system takes advantage of the existing devices and incorporates the electronics needed for the newer beam lines. The control software from NEC, has been modified to accommodate the larger requirements. It runs on the same dedicated computer but receives commands from a new installed host. Both computers communicate through a local network sharing the accelerator database. The new host computer also handles all parameters related to the new lines. In the future, the old computer will be replaced in order to expand the possibilities of the system and use a friendlier graphical interface. In this work we present the changes made to the control software, the new acquisition and control devices installed and the integration of the old and new systems. Finally, the beam control procedure based on the analysis of the beam profile that is under development is also shown.
