Coherent transport through a Majorana island in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

Majorana zero modes are leading candidates for topological quantum computation due to non-local qubit encoding and non-abelian exchange statistics. Spatially separated Majorana modes are expected to allow phase-coherent single-electron transport through a topological superconducting island via a mechanism referred to as teleportation. Here we experimentally investigate such a system by patterning an elongated epitaxial InAs-Al island embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With increasing parallel magnetic field, a discrete sub-gap state in the island is lowered to zero energy yielding persistent 1e-periodic Coulomb blockade conductance peaks (e is the elementary charge). In this condition, conductance through the interferometer is observed to oscillate in a perpendicular magnetic field with a flux period of h/e (h is Planck's constant), indicating coherent transport of single electrons through the islands, a signature of electron teleportation via Majorana modes, could also be observed, suggesting additional non-Majorana mechanisms for 1e transport through these moderately short wires.

Quantum-Dot Parity Effects in Trivial and Topological Josephson Junctions

An odd-occupied quantum dot in a Josephson junction can flip transmission phase, creating a π-junction. When the junction couples topological superconductors, no phase flip is expected. We investigate this and related effects in a full-shell hybrid interferometer, using gate voltage to control dot-junction parity and axial magnetic flux to control the transition from trivial to topological superconductivity. Enhanced zero-bias conductance and critical current for odd parity in the topological phase reflects hybridization of the confined spin with zero-energy modes in the leads.

Stabilization of antiferromagnetism in 1T-Fe$_{0.05}$TaS$_2$

1T-TaS$_2$ is a prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) system with a Mott insulating ground state. Usually, a Mott insulator is accompanied by an antiferromagnetic state. However, the antiferromagnetic order had never been observed in 1T-TaS$_2$. Here, we report the stabilization of the antiferromagnetic order by the intercalation of a small amount of Fe into the van der Waals gap of 1T-TaS$_2$, i.e. forming 1T-Fe$_{0.05}$TaS$_2$. Upon cooling from 300~K, the electrical resistivity increases with a decreasing temperature before reaching a maximum value at around 15~K, which is close to the Neel temperature determined from our magnetic susceptibility measurement. The antiferromagnetic state can be fully suppressed when the sample thickness is reduced, indicating that the antiferromagnetic order in Fe$_{0.05}$TaS$_2$ has a non-negligible three-dimensional character. For the bulk Fe$_{0.05}$TaS$_2$, a comparison of our high pressure electrical transport data with that of 1T-TaS$_2$ indicates that, at ambient pressure, Fe$_{0.05}$TaS$_2$ is in the nearly commensurate charge-density-wave (NCCDW) phase near the border of the Mott insulating state. The temperature-pressure phase diagram thus reveals an interesting decoupling of the antiferromagnetism from the Mott insulating state.

Rashba interaction and local magnetic moments in a graphene-Boron Nitride heterostructure by intercalation with Au

We intercalate a van der Waals heterostructure of graphene and hexagonal Boron Nitride with Au, by encapsulation, and show that Au at the interface is two dimensional. A charge transfer upon current annealing indicates redistribution of Au and induces splitting of the graphene bandstructure. The effect of in plane magnetic field confirms that splitting is due to spin-splitting and that spin polarization is in the plane, characteristic of a Rashba interaction with magnitude approximately 25 meV. Consistent with the presence of intrinsic interfacial electric field we show that the splitting can be enhanced by an applied displacement field in dual gated samples. Giant negative magnetoresistance, up to 75%, and a field induced anomalous Hall effect at magnetic fields < 1 T are observed. These demonstrate that hybridized Au has a magnetic moment and suggests the proximity to formation of a collective magnetic phase. These effects persist close to room temperature.

Intact Quasiparticles at an Unconventional Quantum Critical Point

We report measurements of in-plane electrical and thermal transport properties in the limit $T \rightarrow 0$ near the unconventional quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$. The high Kondo temperature $T_K$ $\simeq$ 200 K in this material allows us to probe transport extremely close to the critical point, at unusually small values of $T/T_K < 5 \times 10^{-4}$. Here we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at the lowest temperatures, implying that the Landau quasiparticles remain intact in the critical region. At finite temperatures we observe a non-Fermi liquid T-linear dependence of inelastic scattering processes to energies lower than those previously accessed. These processes have a weaker temperature dependence than in comparable heavy fermion quantum critical systems, and suggest a new temperature scale of $T \sim 0.3 K$ which signals a sudden change in character of the inelastic scattering.

Evolution of c-f hybridization and two component Hall effect in β-YbAlB_4

β-YbAlB_4 is the unique heavy fermion superconductor that exhibits unconventional quantum criticality without tuning in a strongly intermediate valence state. Despite the large coherence temperature, set by the peak of the longitudinal resistivity, our Hall effect measurements reveal that resonant skew scattering from incoherent local moments persists down to at least ~40 K, where the Hall coefficient exhibits a distinct minimum signaling another formation of coherence. The observation strongly suggests that the hybridization between f-moments and conduction electrons has a two component character with distinct Kondo or coherence scales T_K of ~40 K and 200 K; this is confirmed by the magnetic field dependence of ρ_xy.

Evidence for Dirac Nodes from Quantum Oscillations in SrFe$_2$As$_2$

We present a detailed study of quantum oscillations in the antiferromagnetically ordered pnictide compound SrFe$_2$As$_2$ as the angle between the applied magnetic field and crystalline axes is varied. Our measurements were performed on high quality single crystals in a superconducting magnet, and in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 T, allowing us to observe orbits from several small Fermi surface pockets. We extract the cyclotron effective mass $m^{\star}$ and frequency $F$ for these orbits and track their values as the field is rotated away from the c-axis. While a constant ratio of $m^{\star}/F$ is observed for one orbit as expected for a parabolic band, a clear deviation is observed for another. We conclude that this deviation points to an orbit derived from a band with Dirac dispersion near the Fermi level.

Quantum oscillations in the anomalous phase in Sr3Ru2O7

We report measurements of quantum oscillations detected in the putative nematic phase of Sr3Ru2O7. Significant improvements in sample purity enabled the resolution of small amplitude dHvA oscillations between two first order metamagnetic transitions delimiting the phase. Two distinct frequencies were observed, and their amplitudes follow the normal Lifshitz-Kosevich profile. The Fermi surface sheets seem to correspond to a subset of those detected outside the phase. Variations of the dHvA frequencies are explained in terms of a chemical potential shift produced by reaching a peak in the density of states, and an anomalous field dependence of the oscillatory amplitude provides information on domains.

Quantum oscillations near the metamagnetic transition in Sr3Ru2O7

We report detailed investigation of quantum oscillations in Sr3Ru2O7, observed inductively (the de Haas-van Alphen effect) and thermally (the magnetocaloric effect). Working at fields from 3 T to 18 T allowed us to straddle the metamagnetic transition region and probe the low- and high-field Fermi liquids. The observed frequencies are strongly field-dependent in the vicinity of the metamagnetic transition, and there is evidence for magnetic breakdown. We also present the results of a comprehensive rotation study. The most surprising result concerns the field dependence of the measured quasiparticle masses. Contrary to conclusions previously drawn by some of us as a result of a study performed with a much poorer signal to noise ratio, none of the five Fermi surface branches for which we have good field-dependent data gives evidence for a strong field dependence of the mass. The implications of these experimental findings are discussed.

The role of f -electrons in the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4

We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4 . We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 Tesla, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f-holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.
