Piezomagnetic switching of anomalous Hall effect in an antiferromagnet at room temperature

Piezomagnetism couples strain linearly to magnetic order producing magnetization. Thus, unlike magnetostriction, it enables bidirectional control of a net magnetic moment. If this effect becomes large at room temperature, it may be technologically relevant, similar to its electric analogue, piezoelectricity. To date, however, the studies of the piezomagnetic effect have been primarily restricted to antiferromagnetic (AF) insulators at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report the discovery of a large piezomagnetism in a metal at room temperature. Strikingly, by using the AF Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn, known for its nearly magnetization-free anomalous Hall effect (AHE), we find that an application of small uniaxial strain of the order of 0.1 % can control both the sign and size of the AHE. Our experiment and theory show that the piezomagnetism can control the AHE distinctly from the magnetization, which will be useful for spintronics applications.

Antichiral spin order its Goldstone modes and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn3Ge

Quantum materials with strong transport responses to disparate physical quantities are of great fundamental significance and may hold technological potentials. The interplay between interactions and topology drive such responses through the effects of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the associated domain configurations on quantum transport. Here we provide a comprehensive description of the magnetism of Mn3Ge, an antiferromagnetic kagomebased semimetal with room temperature transport anomalies associated with topologically protected Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the all-important magnetic structure is anti-chiral and coplanar carrying the symmetry of a ferromagnet without appreciable magnetization. We probe and classify the long wavelength excitations that determine its macroscopic responses including a set of collective magneto-elastic modes. We develop a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian with exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and crystal field interactions to describe its collective magnetism. The itinerant character of the magnetism that drives quantum transport is apparent in spin wave damping and extended magnetic interactions. Our work provides the scientific basis for manipulation of the chiral antiferromagnetic texture of Mn3Ge to control its topological quantum transport.

Dimensional Reduction in Quantum Dipolar Antiferromagnets

We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF$_4$. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h$_4$ universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF$_4$ which has the same crystal structure, but largely different T$_N$, crystal field environment and hyperfine interactions. Our results therefore experimentally establish that the dimensional reduction is universal to quantum dipolar antiferromagnets on a distorted diamond lattice.

Low-Energy Excitations and Ground State Selection in Quantum Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$

We study low energy excitations in the quantum breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$ by combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and thermodynamical properties measurements. The INS spectra are quantitatively explained by spin-1/2 single-tetrahedron model having $XXZ$ anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This model has a two-fold degeneracy of the lowest-energy state per tetrahedron and well reproduces the magnetization curve at 0.5 K and heat capacity above 1.5 K. At lower temperatures, however, we observe a broad maximum in the heat capacity around 63 mK, demonstrating that a unique quantum ground state is selected due to extra perturbations with energy scale smaller than the instrumental resolution of INS.

Multiband electronic transport in $α$-Yb$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$AlB$_{4}$ [x = 0, 0.19(3)] single crystals

We report on the evidence for the multiband electronic transport in $α$-YbAlB$_{4}$ and $α$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Multiband transport reveals itself below 10 K in both compounds via Hall effect measurements, whereas anisotropic magnetic ground state sets in below 3 K in $α$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Our results show that Sr$^{2+}$ substitution enhances conductivity, but does not change the quasiparticle mass of bands induced by heavy fermion hybridization.

Quantum Criticality and Inhomogeneous Magnetic Order in Fe-doped alpha-YbAlB4

The intermediate-valent polymorphs $α$- and $β$-YbAlB$_4$ exhibit quantum criticality and other novel properties not usually associated with intermediate valence. Iron doping induces quantum criticality in $α$-YbAlB$_4$ and magnetic order in both compounds. We report results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments in the intermediate-valent alloys $α$-YbAl$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$B$_4$, $x = 0.014$ and 0.25. For $x = 0.014$ we find no evidence for magnetic order down to 25 mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate $λ_d$ exhibits a power-law temperature dependence $λ_d \propto T^{-a}$, $a = 0.40(4)$, in the temperature range 100 mK--2 K, in disagreement with predictions by theories of antiferromagnetic (AFM) or valence quantum critical behavior. For $x = 0.25$, where AFM order develops in the temperature range 7.5--10 K, where we find coexistence of meso- or macroscopically segregated paramagnetic and AFM phases, with considerable disorder in the latter down to 2 K.

Slater to Mott crossover in the metal to insulator transition of Nd2Ir2O7

We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of the three-dimensional pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 through its magnetic metal-insulator transition. Our data reveal that metallic Nd2Ir2O7 has a quadratic band, touching the Fermi level at the Gamma point, similarly to that of Pr2Ir2O7. The Fermi node state is, therefore, a common feature of the metallic phase of the pyrochlore iridates. Upon cooling below the transition temperature, this compound exhibits a gap opening with an energy shift of quasiparticle peaks like a band gap insulator. The quasiparticle peaks are strongly suppressed, however, with further decrease of temperature, and eventually vanish at the lowest temperature, leaving a non-dispersive flat band lacking long-lived electrons. We thereby identify a remarkable crossover from Slater to Mott insulators with decreasing temperature. These observations explain the puzzling absence of Weyl points in this material, despite its proximity to the zero temperature metal-insulator transition.

Intact Quasiparticles at an Unconventional Quantum Critical Point

We report measurements of in-plane electrical and thermal transport properties in the limit $T \rightarrow 0$ near the unconventional quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal $β$-YbAlB$_4$. The high Kondo temperature $T_K$ $\simeq$ 200 K in this material allows us to probe transport extremely close to the critical point, at unusually small values of $T/T_K < 5 \times 10^{-4}$. Here we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at the lowest temperatures, implying that the Landau quasiparticles remain intact in the critical region. At finite temperatures we observe a non-Fermi liquid T-linear dependence of inelastic scattering processes to energies lower than those previously accessed. These processes have a weaker temperature dependence than in comparable heavy fermion quantum critical systems, and suggest a new temperature scale of $T \sim 0.3 K$ which signals a sudden change in character of the inelastic scattering.

Perturbation on Hyperfine-enhanced $^{141}$Pr Nuclear Spin Dynamics Associated with Antiferroquadrupolar Order in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$

The nature of multipolar order and hyperfine-enhanced (HE) $^{141}$Pr nuclear spin dynamics in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ was investigated using the muon spin relaxation technique. No explicit sign of time-reversal symmetry breaking was found below the multipolar order temperature $T_Q\sim 0.6$ K in a zero applied field as anticipated on the basis of the antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) order picture proposed by Sakai and Nakatsuji [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 80, 063701 (2011)]. Further evidence of the nonmagnetic ground state was obtained from the observation of HE $^{141}$Pr nuclear spin fluctuations in the MHz scale. A marked increase in the muon spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_{\rm 1,μ}$) was observed below 1 K with decreasing temperature, which was attributed to the perturbation on the HE $^{141}$Pr nuclear spin dynamics associated with the development of AFQ correlations. The longitudinal field dependence of 1/$T_{\rm 1,μ}$ revealed that the enhanced $^{141}$Pr nuclear spin accidentally has an effective gyromagnetic ratio close to that of the muon.

Quadratic Fermi Node in a 3D Strongly Correlated Semimetal

Strong spin-orbit coupling fosters exotic electronic states such as topological insulators and superconductors, but the combination of strong spin-orbit and strong electron-electron interactions is just beginning to be understood. Central to this emerging area are the 5d transition metal iridium oxides. Here, in the pyrochlore iridate Pr2Ir2O7, we identify a nontrivial state with a single point Fermi node protected by cubic and time-reversal symmetries, using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first principles calculations. Owing to its quadratic dispersion, the unique coincidence of four degenerate states at the Fermi energy, and strong Coulomb interactions, non-Fermi liquid behavior is predicted, for which we observe some evidence. Our discovery implies that Pr2Ir2O7 is a parent state that can be manipulated to produce other strongly correlated topological phases, such as topological Mott insulator, Weyl semi-metal, and quantum spin and anomalous Hall states.

Absence of Jahn-Teller transition in the hexagonal Ba3CuSb2O9 single crystal

We present a comprehensive structural study on perovskite-type 6H-Ba3CuSb2O9, which exhibits a spin-orbital short-range ordering on a honeycomb-based lattice. By combining synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, ultrasound measurement and Raman spectroscopy, we found that the static Jahn-Teller distortion is absent down to the lowest temperature in the present material, indicating orbital ordering is strongly suppressed. We discuss such an unusual state is realized with the help of spin degree of freedom, leading to a spin-orbital entangled liquid state.

Experimental Realization of a Quantum Breathing Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet

The synthesis and characterization of a new Yb-based material Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 are reported. This material is identified as the first model system of a pseudospin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on "breathing" pyrochlore lattice characterized by an alternating array of small and large Yb tetrahedra. Despite dominant antiferromagnetic interactions J ~ 7 K, a large amount of magnetic entropy (25%) remains at 0.38 K, indicating that each small Yb tetrahedron forms a unique doubly degenerate singlet state. These results are well described by the Heisenberg pseudospin-1/2 single tetrahedron model.

Field evolution of quantum critical and heavy Fermi-liquid components in the magnetization of the mixed valence compound beta-YbAlB4

We present the high-precision magnetization data of the valence fluctuating heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ in a wide temperature range from 0.02 K to 320 K spanning four orders of magnitude. We made detailed analyses of the $T/B$ scaling of the magnetization, and firmly confirmed the unconventional zero-field quantum criticality (QC) without tuning. We examined other possible scaling relationship such as $T/(B-B_c)^δ$ scaling, and confirmed that $δ= 1$ provides the best quality of the fit with an upper bound on the critical magnetic field $\vert B_c \vert <0.2$~mT. We further discuss the heavy Fermi-liquid component of the magnetization after subtracting the QC component estimated based on the $T/B$ scaling. The temperature dependence of the heavy Fermi-liquid component is found very similar to the magnetization of the polymorph $α$-YbAlB$_4$. In addition, the heavy Fermi-liquid component is suppressed in the magnetic field above $\sim$ 5 T as in $α$-YbAlB$_4$. This was also confirmed by the magnetization measurements up to $\sim 50$ T for both $α$- and $β$-YbAlB$_4$. Interestingly, the detailed analyses revealed that the only a part of $f$ electrons participates in the zero-field QC and the heavy fermion behavior. We also present a temperature - magnetic field phase diagram of \ybal to illustrate how the characteristic temperature and field scales evolves near the QC.

Quantum criticality in a metallic spin liquid

When magnetic order is suppressed by frustrated interactions, spins form a highly correlated fluctuating "spin liquid" state down to low temperatures. Magnetic order of local moments can also be suppressed when they are fully screened by conduction electrons through the Kondo effect. Thus, the combination of strong geometrical frustration and Kondo screening may lead to novel types of quantum phase transitions. We report low-temperature thermodynamic measurements on the frustrated Kondo lattice Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which displays a chiral spin liquid state below 1.5 K due to the frustrated interaction between Ising 4f local moments and their interplay with Ir conduction electrons. Our results provide a first clear example of zero-field quantum critical scaling that emerges in a spin liquid state of a highly frustrated metal.

T/B scaling of magnetization in the mixed valent compound β-YbAlB4

Here we provide the first clear evidence of Fermi-liquid breakdown in an intermediate valence system. We employ high precision magnetization measurements of the valence fluctuating superconductor beta-YbAlB4 to probe the quantum critical free energy down to temperatures far below the characteristic energy scale of the valence fluctuations. The observed T/B scaling in the magnetization over three decades not only indicates unconventional quantum criticality, but places an upper bound on the critical magnetic field |B_c| < 0.2 mT, a value comparable with the Earth's magnetic field and six orders of magnitude smaller than the valence fluctuation scale. This tiny value of the upper bound on B_c, well inside the superconducting dome, raises the fascinating possibility that valence fluctuating beta-YbAlB4 is intrinsically quantum critical, without tuning the magnetic field, pressure, or composition: the first known example of such a phenomenon in a metal.

Synchrotron X-ray Spectroscopy Study on the Valence State in alpha- and beta-YbAlB4 at Low Temperatures and High Magnetic Fields

The valence state of Yb ions in beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 has been investigated by using X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy in SPring-8 at temperatures from 2 to 280 K. The observed Yb valence is 2.78 +- 0.01 in beta-YbAlB4 at 2 K by using the X-ray emission spectroscopy. The valence is found to gradually increase with increasing temperature toward the trivalent state, and the characteristic temperature of the valence fluctuation is expected to be about 290 K. We also found a small increase in the Yb valence (~0.002) by applying a magnetic field of 32 T at 40 K to beta-YbAlB4.

Evidence for an exotic magnetic transition in the triangular spin system FeGa2S4

We report positive muon spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice magnetic system FeGa2S4. A magnetic transition not previously detected by specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements is found in zero field at T^* \simeq 30 K. It is observed through the temperature dependencies of the signal amplitude and the spin-lattice relaxation rate. This transition is therefore not a conventional magnetic phase transition. Since persistent spin dynamics is observed down to 0.1 K, the ground state cannot be of the canonical spin-glass type, which could be suggested from hysteresis effects in the bulk susceptibility below T_f \simeq 16 K. These results are compared to those found for the isomorph NiGa2S4. It is argued that the fate of the transition, which has been interpreted in terms of the Z_2 topological transition in this latter system, is probably different in FeGa2S4.

Evolution of c-f hybridization and two component Hall effect in β-YbAlB_4

β-YbAlB_4 is the unique heavy fermion superconductor that exhibits unconventional quantum criticality without tuning in a strongly intermediate valence state. Despite the large coherence temperature, set by the peak of the longitudinal resistivity, our Hall effect measurements reveal that resonant skew scattering from incoherent local moments persists down to at least ~40 K, where the Hall coefficient exhibits a distinct minimum signaling another formation of coherence. The observation strongly suggests that the hybridization between f-moments and conduction electrons has a two component character with distinct Kondo or coherence scales T_K of ~40 K and 200 K; this is confirmed by the magnetic field dependence of ρ_xy.

Pressure Tuned Insulator to Metal Transition in Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We have studied the effect of pressure on the pyrochlore iridate Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which at ambient pressure has a thermally driven insulator to metal transition at $T_{MI}\sim120$\,K. As a function of pressure the insulating gap closes, apparently continuously, near $P \sim 6$\,GPa. However, rather than $T_{MI}$ going to zero as expected, the insulating ground state crosses over to a metallic state with a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity, calling into question the true nature of both ground states. The high temperature state also crosses over near 6 GPa, from an incoherent to a conventional metal, suggesting a connection between the high and the low temperature states.

Spin dynamics and spin freezing in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets FeGa2S4 and NiGa2S4

Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments have been carried out on the quasi-2D triangular-lattice spin S = 2 antiferromagnet FeGa2S4. The muSR data indicate a sharp onset of a frozen or nearly-frozen spin state at T* = 31(2) K, twice the spin-glass-like freezing temperature T_f = 16(1) K. The susceptibility becomes field dependent below T*, but no sharp anomaly is observed in any bulk property. A similar transition is observed in muSR data from the spin-1 isomorph NiGa2S4. In both compounds the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate lambda_d(T) above T* agrees well with a calculation of spin-lattice relaxation by Chubukov, Sachdev, and Senthil in the renormalized classical regime of a 2D frustrated quantum antiferromagnet. There is no firm evidence for other mechanisms. At low temperatures lambda_d(T) becomes temperature independent in both compounds, indicating persistence of spin dynamics. Scaling of lambda_d(T) between the two compounds is observed from ~T_f to ~1.5T*. Although the muSR data by themselves cannot exclude a truly static spin component below T*, together with the susceptibility data they are consistent with a slowly-fluctuating "spin gel" regime between T_f and T*. Such a regime and the absence of a divergence in lambda_d(T) at T* are features of two unconventional mechanisms: (1) binding/unbinding of Z_2 vortex excitations, and (2) impurity spins in a nonmagnetic spin-nematic ground state. The absence of a sharp anomaly or history dependence at T* in the susceptibility of FeGa2S4, and the weakness of such phenomena in NiGa2S4, strongly suggest transitions to low-temperature phases with unconventional dynamics.

Thermoelectric response near a quantum critical point of beta-YbAlB4 and YbRh2Si2: A comparative study

The thermoelectric coefficients have been measured on the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds beta-YbAlB4 and YbRh2Si2 down to a very low temperature. We observe a striking difference in the behavior of the Seebeck coefficient, S in the vicinity of the Quantum Critical Point (QCP) in the two systems. As the critical field is approached, S/T enhances in beta-YbAlB4 but is drastically reduced in YbRh2Si2. While in the former system, the ratio of thermopower-to-specific heat remains constant, it drastically drops near the QCP in YbRh2Si2. In both systems, on the other hand, the Nernst coefficient shows a diverging behavior near the QCP. The results provide a new window to the way various energy scales of the system behave and eventually vanish near a QCP.

Anisotropic heavy Fermi-liquid formation in the valence fluctuating $α$-YbAlB$_4$

$α$-YbAlB$_4$ is the locally isostructural polymorph of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, the first example of an Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor which exhibits pronounced non-Fermi-liquid behavior above $T_{\rm c}$. Interestingly, both $α$-YbAlB$_4$ and $β$-YbAlB$_4$ have strongly intermediate valence. Our single crystal study of the specific heat, magnetization and resistivity has confirmed the Fermi liquid ground state of $α$-YbAlB$_4$ ~in contrast with the quantum criticality observed in $β$-YbAlB$_4$. Both systems exhibit Kondo lattice behavior with the characteristic temperature scale $T^* \sim$ 8 K in addition to a valence fluctuation scale $\sim 200$ K. Below $T^*$, $α$-YbAlB$_4$ a heavy Fermi liquid state with an electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\sim$ 130 mJ/mol K$^2$ and a large Wilson ratio more than 7, which indicates ferromagnetic correlation between Yb moments. A large anisotropy in the resistivity suggests that the hybridization between 4$f$ and conduction electrons is much stronger in the $ab$-plane than along the c-axis. The strongly anisotropic hybridization as well as the large Wilson ratio is the key to understand the unusual Kondo lattice behavior and heavy fermion formation in mixed valent compounds.

Anisotropic hysteretic Hall-effect and magnetic control of chiral domains in the chiral spin states of Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We uncover a strong anisotropy in both the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magnetoresistance of the chiral spin states of Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The AHE appearing below 1.5 K at zero magnetic field shows hysteresis which is most pronounced for fields cycled along the [111] direction. This hysteresis is compatible with the field-induced growth of domains composed by the 3-in 1-out spin states which remain coexisting with the 2-in 2-out spin ice manifold once the field is removed. Only for fields applied along the [111] direction, we observe a large positive magnetoresistance and Shubnikov de Haas oscillations above a metamagnetic critical field. These observations suggest the reconstruction of the electronic structure of the conduction electrons by the field-induced spin-texture.

Kondo Resonance in PrTi2Al20: Photoemission spectroscopy and single-impurity Anderson model

The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent resonance and is reproduced with properly tuned hybridization strength in SIAM calculations.

Magnetic transition, long-range order, and moment fluctuations in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7

Muon spin rotation and relaxation experiments in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 yield a well-defined muon spin precession frequency below the metal-insulator/antiferromagnetic transition temperature TM = 120 K, indicative of long-range commensurate magnetic order and thus ruling out quantum spin liquid and spin-glass-like ground states. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate is temperature-independent between 2 K and ~TM and yields an anomalously long Ir^{4+} spin correlation time, suggesting a singular density of low-lying spin excitations. Similar behavior is found in other pyrochlores and geometrically frustrated systems, but also in the unfrustrated iridate BaIrO3. Eu2Ir2O7 may be only weakly frustrated; if so, the singularity might be associated with the small-gap insulating state rather than frustration.

Incommensurate short-range order in the S=1 triangular antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

Neutron scattering is used to investigate spin correlations in ultra pure single crystals of the S=1 triangular lattice NiGa2S4. Despite a Curie-Weiss temperature of Theta_CW=-80(2) K, static (tau > 1 ns) short range (xi_ab=26(3) Å) incommensurate order prevails for T>1.5 K. The incommensurate modulation Q_0=(0.155(3),0.155(3),0), Theta_CW, and the spin wave velocity (c=4400 m/s) can be accounted for by antiferromagnetic third-nearest neighbor interactions J_3=2.8(6) meV and ferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling J_1=-0.35(9) J_3. Inter-plane correlations are limited to nearest neighbors and weakened by an in-plane field. These observations show that the short range ordered glassy phase that has been observed in a number of highly degenerate systems, can persist near the clean limit.

Magnetic excitations in the metallic single-layer Ruthenates Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) studied by inelastic neutron scattering

By inelastic neutron scattering, we have analyzed the magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic metallic region of the series Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4), 0.2<=x<=0.62. We find different contributions that correspond to 2D ferromagnetic fluctuations and to fluctuations at incommensurate wave vectors (0.11,0,0), (0.26,0,0) and (0.3,0.3,0). These components constitute the measured response as function of the Sr-concentration x, of the magnetic field and of the temperature. A generic model is applicable to metallic Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO(4) close to the Mott transition, in spite of their strongly varying physical properties. The amplitude, characteristic energy and width of the incommensurate components vary only little as function of x, but the ferromagnetic component depends sensitively on concentration, temperature and magnetic field. While ferromagnetic fluctuations are very strong in Ca1.38Sr0.62RuO4 with a low characteristic energy of 0.2 meV at T=1.5 K, they are strongly suppressed in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4, but reappear upon the application of a magnetic field and form a magnon mode above the metamagnetic transition. The inelastic neutron scattering results document how the competition between ferromagnetic and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities governs the physics of this system.

Strong valence fluctuation in the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4: A hard x-ray photoemission study

Electronic structures of the quantum critical superconductor beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 are investigated by using bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. From the Yb 3d core level spectra, the values of the Yb valence are estimated to be ~2.73 and ~2.75 for alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, respectively, thus providing clear evidence for valence fluctuations. The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.

Low temperature magnetization of the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$

$β$-YbAlB$_4$ is the first Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor with $T_{\rm c} = 80$ mK. We measured low temperature magnetization of high-purity single crystals down to $T=$ 25 mK. The measurements have revealed a considerable amount of volume fractions of the superconductivity and the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ curve under field along the c axis, consistent with the previous results. In the normal state, the previously observed divergent behavior in the temperature dependence of the magnetization has been confirmed using higher quality samples and under a low field of 22 mT. In addition, the measurements have revealed a power law behavior, namely, $dM/dT\propto T^{3/2}$, which has a slightly higher exponent than the previous results.

Possible Multiple Gap Superconductivity with Line Nodes in Heavily Hole-Doped Superconductor KFe2As2 Studied by 75As-NQR and Specific Heat

We report the 75As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and specific heat measurements of the heavily hole-doped superconductor KFe2As2 (Tc = 3.5 K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the superconducting state exhibits quite gradual temperature dependence with no coherence peak below Tc. The quasi-particle specific heat C_QP/T shows small specific heat jump which is about 30% of electronic specific heat coefficient just below Tc. In addition, it suggests the existence of low-energy quasi-particle excitation at the lowest measurement temperature T = 0.4 K \simeq Tc/10. These temperature dependence of 1/T1 and C_QP/T can be explained by multiple nodal superconducting gap scenario rather than multiple fully-gapped s_\pm-wave one within simple gap analysis.

The role of f -electrons in the Fermi surface of the heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4

We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4 . We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 Tesla, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f-holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.

Field-induced paramagnons at the metamagnetic transition in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4

The magnetic excitations in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4 were studied across the metamagnetic transition and as a function of temperature using inelastic neutron scattering. At low temperature and low magnetic field the magnetic response is dominated by a complex superposition of incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Upon increasing the magnetic field across the metamagnetic ransition, paramagnon and finally well-defined magnon scattering is induced, partially suppressing the incommensurate signals. The high-field phase in Ca1.8Sr0.2RuO4 has, therefore, to be considered as an intrinsically ferromagnetic state stabilized by the magnetic field.

Magnetoelastic coupling across the metamagnetic transition in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ (0.2 < x < 0.5)

The magnetoelastic coupling in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ and in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$ has been studied combining high-resolution dilatometer and diffraction techniques. Both compounds exhibit strong anomalies in the thermal-expansion coefficient at zero and at high magnetic field as well as an exceptionally large magnetostriction. All these structural effects, which are strongest in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$, point to a redistribution of electrons between the different $t_{2g}$ orbitals tuned by temperature and magnetic field. The temperature and the field dependence of the thermal-expansion anomalies in Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$ yield evidence for a critical end-point lying close to the low-temperature metamagnetic transition; however, the expected scaling relations are not well fulfilled.

Orbital-selective Mass Enhancements in Multi-band Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ Systems Analyzed by the Extended Drude Model

We investigated optical spectra of quasi-two-dimensional multi-band Ca$% _{2-x} $Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ systems. The extended Drude model analysis on the ab-plane optical conductivity spectra indicates that the effective mass should be enhanced near $x=0.5$. Based on the sum rule argument, we showed that the orbital-selective Mott-gap opening for the $d_{yz/zx}$ bands, the widely investigated picture, could not be the origin of the mass enhancement. We exploited the multi-band effects in the extended Drude model analysis, and demonstrated that the intriguing heavy mass state near $x=0.5$ should come from the renormalization of the $d_{xy}$ band.

We have studied the magnetic excitations in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$, x=0.52 and 0.62, which exhibit an anomalous high susceptibility and heavy mass Fermi liquid behavior. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal strongly enhanced magnetic fluctuations around an incommensurate wave vector (0.22,0,0) pointing to a magnetic instability. The magnetic fluctuations show no correlation in c-direction and also along the RuO$_2$-planes the signal is extremely broad, $Δq =0.45$ Å$^{-1}$. These fluctuations can quantitatively account for the high specific heat coefficient and relate to the high macroscopic susceptibility. The magnetic scattering is attributed to the $γ$-band, the active band for spin triplet superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.
