The number of traveling wave families in a running water with Coriolis force

In this paper, we study the number of traveling wave families near a shear flow under the influence of Coriolis force, where the traveling speeds lie outside the range of the flow $u$. Under the $β$-plane approximation, if the flow $u$ has a critical point at which $u$ attains its minimal (resp. maximal) value, then a unique transitional $β$ value exists in the positive (resp. negative) half-line such that the number of traveling wave families near the shear flow changes suddenly from finite to infinite when $β$ passes through it. On the other hand, if $u$ has no such critical points, then the number is always finite for positive (resp. negative) $β$ values. This is true for general shear flows under mildly technical assumptions, and for a large class of shear flows including a cosine jet $u(y) = {1+\cos(πy)\over 2}$ (i.e. the sinus profile) and analytic monotone flows unconditionally. The sudden change of the number of traveling wave families indicates that long time dynamics around the shear flow is much richer than the non-rotating case, where no such traveling wave families exist.

Asymptotic decay for defocusing semilinear wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^{1+1}$

This paper is devoted to the study of asymptotic behaviors of solutions to the one-dimensional defocusing semilinear wave equation. We prove that finite energy solution tends to zero in the pointwise sense, hence improving the averaged decay of Lindblad and Tao. Moreover, for sufficiently localized data belonging to some weighted energy space, the solution decays in time with an inverse polynomial rate. This confirms a conjecture raised in the mentioned work. The results are based on new weighted vector fields as multipliers applied to regions enclosed by light rays. The key observation for the first result is an integrated local energy decay for the potential energy, while the second result relies on a type of weighted Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality.

On the 3D Relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell System with large Maxwell field

This paper is devoted to the study of relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system in three space dimension. For a class of large initial data, we prove the global existence of classical solution with sharp decay estimate. The initial Maxwell field is allowed to be arbitrarily large and the initial density distribution is assumed to be small and decay with rate $(1+|x|+|v|)^{-9-}$. In particular, there is no restriction on the support of the initial data.

On the global behaviors for defocusing semilinear wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$

In this paper, we study the asymptotic decay properties for defocusing semilinear wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$ with pure power nonlinearity. By applying new vector fields to null hyperplane, we derive improved time decay of the potential energy, with a consequence that the solution scatters both in the critical Sobolev space and energy space for all $p>1+\sqrt{8}$. Moreover combined with Brézis-Gallouet-Wainger type of logarithmic Sobolev embedding, we show that the solution decays pointwise with sharp rate $t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ when $p>\frac{11}{3}$ and with rate $t^{ -\frac{p-1}{8}+ε}$ for all $1<p\leq \frac{11}{3}$. This in particular implies that the solution scatters in energy space when $p>2\sqrt{5}-1$.

Small gaps of circular $β$-ensemble

In this article, we study the smallest gaps of the log-gas $β$-ensemble on the unit circle (C$β$E), where $β$ is any positive integer. The main result is that the smallest gaps, after being normalized by $n^{\frac {β+2}{β+1}}$, will converge in distribution to a Poisson point process with some explicit intensity. And thus one can derive the limiting density of the $k$-th smallest gap, which is proportional to $x^{k(β+1)-1}e^{-x^{β+1}}$. In particular, the result applies to the classical COE, CUE and CSE in random matrix theory. The essential part of the proof is to derive several identities and inequalities regarding the Selberg integral, which should have their own interest.

Transition threshold for the 3D Couette flow in a finite channel

In this paper, we study nonlinear stability of the 3D plane Couette flow $(y,0,0)$ at high Reynolds number ${Re}$ in a finite channel $\mathbb{T}\times [-1,1]\times \mathbb{T}$. It is well known that the plane Couette flow is linearly stable for any Reynolds number. However, it could become nonlinearly unstable and transition to turbulence for small but finite perturbations at high Reynolds number. This is so-called Sommerfeld paradox. One resolution of this paradox is to study the transition threshold problem, which is concerned with how much disturbance will lead to the instability of the flow and the dependence of disturbance on the Reynolds number. This work shows that if the initial velocity $v_0$ satisfies $\|v_0-(y,0,0)\|_{H^2}\le c_0{Re}^{-1}$ for some $c_0>0$ independent of $Re$, then the solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations is global in time and does not transition away from the Couette flow in the $L^\infty$ sense, and rapidly converges to a streak solution for $t\gg Re^{\frac 13}$ due to the mixing-enhanced dissipation effect. This result confirms the transition threshold conjecture proposed by Trefethen et al.(Science, 261(1993), 578-584). To this end, we develop the resolvent estimate method to establish the space-time estimates for the full linearized Navier-Stokes system around the flow $(V(t,y,z), 0,0)$, where $V(t,y,z)$ is a small perturbation(but independent of $Re$) of the Couette flow $y$.

Energy identity for approximate harmonic maps from surface to general targets

Let $u_n$ be a sequence of mappings from a closed Riemannian surface $M$ to a general Riemannian manifold $N$. If $u_n$ satisfies \beno \sup_{n}\big(\|\nabla u_n\|_{L^2(M)}+\|τ(u_n)\|_{L^{p}(M)}\big)\leq Λ\quad \text{for some}\,\,p>1, \eeno where $τ(u_n)$ is the tension field of $u_n$, then there hold the so called energy identity and neckless property during blowing up. This result is sharp by Parker's example, where the tension fields of the mappings from Riemannian surface are bounded in $L^1(M)$ but the energy identity fails.

Regularity Criterion to the axially symmetric Navier-Stokes Equations

Smooth solutions to the axially symmetric Navier-Stokes equations obey the following maximum principle:$\|ru_θ(r,z,t)\|_{L^\infty}\leq\|ru_θ(r,z,0)\|_{L^\infty}.$ We first prove the global regularity of solutions if $\|ru_θ(r,z,0)\|_{L^\infty}$ or $ \|ru_θ(r,z,t)\|_{L^\infty(r\leq r_0)}$ is small compared with certain dimensionless quantity of the initial data. This result improves the one in Zhen Lei and Qi S. Zhang \cite{1}. As a corollary, we also prove the global regularity under the assumption that $|ru_θ(r,z,t)|\leq\ |\ln r|^{-3/2},\ \ \forall\ 0<r\leqδ_0\in(0,1/2).$

Multi-hump solitary waves of nonlinear Dirac equation

This paper concentrates on a (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation with a general self-interaction, being a linear combination of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial vector self-interactions to the power of the integer $k+1$. The solitary wave solutions to the NLD equation are analytically derived, and the upper bounds of the hump number in the charge, energy and momentum densities for the solitary waves are proved in theory. The results show that: (1) for a given integer $k$, the hump number in the charge density is not bigger than $4$, while that in the energy density is not bigger than $3$; (2) those upper bounds can only be achieved in the situation of higher nonlinearity, namely, $k\in\{5,6,7,\cdots \}$ for the charge density and $k\in\{3,5,7,\cdots\}$ for the energy density; (3) the momentum density has the same multi-hump structure as the energy density; (4) more than two humps (resp. one hump) in the charge (resp. energy) density can only happen under the linear combination of the pseudoscalar self-interaction and at least one of the scalar and vector (or axial vector) self-interactions. Our results on the multi-hump structure will be interesting in the interaction dynamics for the NLD solitary waves.
