Efficient Adjoint Matching for Fine-tuning Diffusion Models

Reward fine-tuning has become a common approach for aligning pretrained diffusion and flow models with human preferences in text-to-image generation. Among reward-gradient-based methods, Adjoint Matching (AM) provides a principled formulation by casting reward fine-tuning as a stochastic optimal control (SOC) problem. However, AM inevitably requires a substantial computational cost: it requires (i) stochastic simulation of full generative trajectories under memoryless dynamics, resulting in a large number of function evaluations, and (ii) backward ODE simulation of the adjoint state along each sampled trajectory. In this work, we observe that both bottlenecks are closely tied to the \textit{non-trivial base drift} inherited from the pretrained model. Motivated by this observation, we propose \textbf{Efficient Adjoint Matching (EAM)}, which substantially improves training efficiency by reformulating the SOC problem with a \textit{linear base drift} and a correspondingly modified \textit{terminal cost}. This reformulation removes both sources of inefficiency; it enables training-time sampling with a few-step deterministic ODE solver and yields a closed-form adjoint solution that eliminates backward adjoint simulation. On standard text-to-image reward fine-tuning benchmarks, EAM converges up to 4x faster than AM and matches or surpasses it across various metrics including PickScore, ImageReward, HPSv2.1, CLIPScore and Aesthetics.

Normal complex surface singularities with rational homology disk smoothings

In this paper we show that if the minimal good resolution graph of a normal surface singularity contains at least two nodes (i.e. vertex with valency at least 3) then the singularity does not admit a smoothing with Milnor fiber having rational homology equal to the rational homology of the 4-disk $D^4$ (called a rational homology disk smoothing). Combining with earlier results, this theorem then provides a complete classification of resolution graphs of normal surface singularities with a rational homology disk smoothing, verifying a conjecture of J. Wahl regarding such singularities. Indeed, together with a recent result of J. Fowler we get the complete list of normal surface singularities which admit rational homology disk smoothings.

A simply connected numerical Campedelli surface with an involution

We construct a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=2$ which has an involution such that the minimal resolution of the quotient by the involution is a simply connected minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=1$. In order to construct the example, we combine a double covering and $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation. Especially, we develop a method for proving unobstructedness for deformations of a singular surface by generalizing a result of Burns and Wahl which characterizes the space of first order deformations of a singular surface with only rational double points. We describe the stable model in the sense of Kollár and Shepherd-Barron of the singular surfaces used for constructing the example. We count the dimension of the invariant part of the deformation space of the example under the induced $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-action.

A complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=2$ and $H_1=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$

We construct a new minimal complex surface of general type with $p_g=0$, $K^2=2$ and $H_1=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$ (in fact $π_1^{\text{alg}}=\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$), which settles the existence question for numerical Campedelli surfaces with all possible algebraic fundamental groups. The main techniques involved in the construction are a rational blow-down surgery and a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing theory.
