A Novel Actuation Strategy for an Agile Bio-inspired FWAV Performing a Morphing-coupled Wingbeat Pattern

Flying vertebrates exhibit sophisticated wingbeat kinematics. Their specialized forelimbs allow for the wing morphing motion to couple with the flapping motion during their level flight, Previous flyable bionic platforms have successfully applied bio-inspired wing morphing but cannot yet be propelled by the morphing-coupled wingbeat pattern. Spurred by this, we develop a bio-inspired flapping-wing aerial vehicle (FWAV) entitled RoboFalcon, which is equipped with a novel mechanism to drive the bat-style morphing wings, performs a morphing-coupled wingbeat pattern, and overall manages an appealing flight. The novel mechanism of RoboFalcon allows coupling the morphing and flapping during level flight and decoupling these when maneuvering is required, producing a bilateral asymmetric downstroke affording high rolling agility. The bat-style morphing wing is designed with a tilted mounting angle around the radius at the wrist joint to mimic the wrist supination and pronation effect of flying vertebrates' forelimbs. The agility of RoboFalcon is assessed through several rolling maneuver flight tests, and we demonstrate its well-performing agility capability compared to flying creatures and current flapping-wing platforms. Wind tunnel tests indicate that the roll moment of the asymmetric downstroke is correlated with the flapping frequency, and the wrist mounting angle can be used for tuning the angle of attack and lift-thrust configuration of the equilibrium flight state. We believe that this work yields a well-performing bionic platform and provides a new actuation strategy for the morphing-coupled flapping flight.

Distributed Link Removal Strategy for Networked Meta-Population Epidemics and its Application to the Control of the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this paper, we investigate the distributed link removal strategy for networked meta-population epidemics. In particular, a deterministic networked susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model is considered to describe the epidemic evolving process. In order to curb the spread of epidemics, we present the spectrum-based optimization problem involving the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of the matrix constructed by the network topology and transition rates. A modified distributed link removal strategy is developed such that it can be applied to the SIR model with heterogeneous transition rates on weighted digraphs. The proposed approach is implemented to control the COVID-19 pandemic by using the reported infected and recovered data in each state of Germany. The numerical experiment shows that the infected percentage can be significantly reduced by using the distributed link removal strategy.

Consensus Driven by the Geometric Mean

Consensus networks are usually understood as arithmetic mean driven dynamical averaging systems. In applications, however, network dynamics often describe inherently non-arithmetic and non-linear consensus processes. In this paper, we propose and study three novel consensus protocols driven by geometric mean averaging: a polynomial, an entropic, and a scaling-invariant protocol, where terminology characterizes the particular non-linearity appearing in the respective differential protocol equation. We prove exponential convergence to consensus for positive initial conditions. For the novel protocols we highlight connections to applied network problems: The polynomial consensus system is structured like a system of chemical kinetics on a graph. The entropic consensus system converges to the weighted geometric mean of the initial condition, which is an immediate extension of the (weighted) average consensus problem. We find that all three protocols generate gradient flows of free energy on the simplex of constant mass distribution vectors albeit in different metrics. On this basis, we propose a novel variational characterization of the geometric mean as the solution of a non-linear constrained optimization problem involving free energy as cost function. We illustrate our findings in numerical simulations.

Protecting entangled states of two ions by engineering reservoir

We present a proposal for realizing local decoherence-free evolution of given entangled states of two two-level (TL) ions. For two TL ions coupled to a single heavily damped cavity, we can use engineering reservoir scheme to obtain a decoherence-free subspace which can be nonadiabatically controlled by the system and reservoir parameters. Then the local decoherence-free evolution of the entangled states are achieved. And we also discuss the relation between the geometric phases and the entanglement of the two ions under the nonadiabatic coherent evolution.
