Scaling transition for singular linear random fields on $\mathbb{Z}^2$: spectral approach

We study partial sums limits of linear random fields $X$ on $\mathbb{Z}^2 $ with spectral density $f({\mathbf x}) $ tending to $\infty,\, 0$ or to both (along different subsequences) as ${\mathbf x} \to (0,0)$. The above behaviors are termed (spectrum) long-range dependence, negative dependence, and long-range negative dependence, respectively, and assume an anisotropic power-law form of $f({\mathbf x})$ near the origin. The partial sums are taken over rectangles whose sides increase as $λ$ and $λ^γ$, for any fixed $γ>0$. We prove that for above $X$ the partial sums or scaling limits exist for any $γ>0$ and exhibit a scaling transition at some $γ= γ_0>0$; moreover, the `unbalanced' scaling limits ($γ\neγ_0$) are Fractional Brownian Sheet with Hurst parameters taking values from $[0,1]$. The paper extends \cite{ps2015, pils2017, sur2020} to the above spectrum dependence conditions and/or more general values of Hurst parameters.

Aggregation of network traffic and anisotropic scaling of random fields

We discuss joint spatial-temporal scaling limits of sums $A_{λ,γ}$ (indexed by $(x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2_+$) of large number $O(λ^γ)$ of independent copies of integrated input process $X = \{X(t), t \in \mathbb{R}\}$ at time scale $λ$, for any given $γ>0$. We consider two classes of inputs $X$: (I) Poisson shot-noise with (random) pulse process, and (II) regenerative process with random pulse process and regeneration times following a heavy-tailed stationary renewal process. The above classes include several queueing and network traffic models for which joint spatial-temporal limits were previously discussed in the literature. In both cases (I) and (II) we find simple conditions on the input process in order that normalized random fields $A_{λ,γ}$ tend to an $α$-stable Lévy sheet $(1< α<2)$ if $ γ< γ_0$, and to a fractional Brownian sheet if $γ> γ_0$, for some $γ_0>0$. We also prove an `intermediate' limit for $γ= γ_0$. Our results extend previous works Mikosch et al. (2002), Gaigalas, Kaj (2003) and other papers to more general and new input processes.

Local scaling limits of Lévy driven fractional random fields

We obtain a complete description of local anisotropic scaling limits for a class of fractional random fields $X$ on ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ written as stochastic integral with respect to infinitely divisible random measure. The scaling procedure involves increments of $X$ over points the distance between which in the horizontal and vertical directions shrinks as $O(λ)$ and $O(λ^γ)$ respectively as $λ\downarrow 0$, for some $γ>0$. We consider two types of increments of $X$: usual increment and rectangular increment, leading to the respective concepts of $γ$-tangent and $γ$-rectangent random fields. We prove that for above $X$ both types of local scaling limits exist for any $γ>0$ and undergo a transition, being independent of $γ>γ_0$ and $γ<γ_0$, for some $γ_0>0$; moreover, the "unbalanced" scaling limits ($γ\neγ_0$) are $(H_1,H_2)$-multi self-similar with one of $H_i$, $i=1,2$, equal to $0$ or $1$. The paper extends Pilipauskaitė and Surgailis (2017) and Surgailis (2020) on large-scale anisotropic scaling of random fields on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ and Benassi et al. (2004) on $1$-tangent limits of isotropic fractional Lévy random fields.

Scaling limits of linear random fields on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ with general dependence axis

We discuss anisotropic scaling of long-range dependent linear random fields $X$ on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ with arbitrary dependence axis (direction in the plane along which the moving-average coefficients decay at a smallest rate). The scaling limits are taken over rectangles whose sides are parallel to the coordinate axes and increase as $λ$ and $λ^γ$ when $λ\to \infty$, for any $γ>0$. The scaling transition occurs at $γ^X_0 >0$ if the scaling limits of $X$ are different and do not depend on $γ$ for $γ> γ^X_0 $ and $γ< γ^X_0$. We prove that the fact of `oblique' dependence axis (or incongruous scaling) dramatically changes the scaling transition in the above model so that $γ_0^X = 1$ independently of other parameters, contrasting the results in Pilipauskaitė and Surgailis (2017) on the scaling transition under congruous scaling.

Scaling transition and edge effects for negatively dependent linear random fields on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$

We obtain a complete description of anisotropic scaling limits and the existence of scaling transition for a class of negatively dependent linear random fields on ${\mathbb{Z}}^2$ with moving-average coefficients $a(t,s)$ decaying as $|t|^{-q_1}$ and $|s|^{-q_2}$ in the horizontal and vertical directions, $q_1^{-1} + q_2^{-1} < 1 $. The scaling limits are taken over rectangles whose sides increase as $λ$ and $λ^γ$ when $λ\to \infty$, for any $γ>0$. We prove that the scaling transition %and the structure of the scaling diagram in this model is closely related to the presence or absence of the edge effects.

Joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of random-coefficient AR(1) processes with infinite variance

We discuss joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of $N$ independent copies of random-coefficient AR(1) process driven by i.i.d. innovations in the domain of normal attraction of an $α$-stable distribution, $0< α\le 2$, as both $N$ and the time scale $n$ tend to infinity, possibly at a different rate. Assuming that the tail distribution function of the random autoregressive coefficient regularly varies at the unit root with exponent $β> 0$, we show that, for $β< \max (α, 1)$, the joint aggregate displays a variety of stable and non-stable limit behaviors with stability index depending on $α$, $β$ and the mutual increase rate of $N$ and $n$. The paper extends the results of Pilipauskaitė and Surgailis (2014) from $α= 2$ to $0 < α< 2$.

Aggregation of autoregressive random fields and anisotropic long-range dependence

We introduce the notions of scaling transition and distributional long-range dependence for stationary random fields $Y$ on $\mathbb {Z}^2$ whose normalized partial sums on rectangles with sides growing at rates $O(n)$ and $O(n^γ)$ tend to an operator scaling random field $V_γ$ on $\mathbb {R}^2$, for any $γ>0$. The scaling transition is characterized by the fact that there exists a unique $γ_0>0$ such that the scaling limits $V_γ$ are different and do not depend on $γ$ for $γ>γ_0$ and $γ<γ_0$. The existence of scaling transition together with anisotropic and isotropic distributional long-range dependence properties is demonstrated for a class of $α$-stable $(1<α\le2)$ aggregated nearest-neighbor autoregressive random fields on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with a scalar random coefficient $A$ having a regularly varying probability density near the "unit root" $A=1$.

Discrete-time trawl processes with long memory

We introduce a class of discrete time stationary trawl processes taking real or integer values and written as sums of past values of independent `seed' processes on shrinking intervals (`trawl heights'). Related trawl processes in continuous time were studied in Barndorff-Nielsen (2011) and Barndorff-Nielsen et al. (2014), however in our case, the i.i.d. seed processes can be very general and need not be infinitely divisible. In the case when the trawl height decays with the lag as $j^{-α}$ for some $1< α< 2 $, the trawl process exhibits long memory and its covariance decays as $j^{1-α}$. We show that under general conditions on generic seed process, the normalized partial sums of such trawl process may tend either to a fractional Brownian motion or to an $α$-stable Lévy process.

Nonparametric estimation of the distribution of the autoregressive coefficient from panel random-coefficient AR(1) data

We discuss nonparametric estimation of the distribution function $G(x)$ of the autoregressive coefficient $a \in (-1,1)$ from a panel of $N$ random-coefficient AR(1) data, each of length $n$, by the empirical distribution function of lag 1 sample autocorrelations of individual AR(1) processes. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the empirical distribution function and a class of kernel density estimators is established under some regularity conditions on $G(x)$ as $N$ and $n$ increase to infinity. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test for simple and composite hypotheses of Beta distributed $a$ is discussed. A simulation study for goodness-of-fit testing compares the finite-sample performance of our nonparametric estimator to the performance of its parametric analogue discussed in Beran et al. (2010).

A nonlinear model for long memory conditional heteroscedasticity

We discuss a class of conditionally heteroscedastic time series models satisfying the equation $r_t= ζ_t σ_t$, where $ζ_t$ are standardized i.i.d. r.v.'s and the conditional standard deviation $σ_t$ is a nonlinear function $Q$ of inhomogeneous linear combination of past values $r_s, s<t$ with coefficients $b_j$. The existence of stationary solution $r_t$ with finite $p$th moment, $0< p < \infty $ is obtained under some conditions on $Q, b_j$ and $p$th moment of $ζ_0$. Weak dependence properties of $r_t$ are studied, including the invariance principle for partial sums of Lipschitz functions of $r_t$. In the case of quadratic $Q^2$, we prove that $r_t$ can exhibit a leverage effect and long memory, in the sense that the squared process $r^2_t$ has long memory autocorrelation and its normalized partial sums process converges to a fractional Brownian motion.

Quasi-MLE for quadratic ARCH model with long memory

We discuss parametric quasi-maximum likelihood estimation for quadratic ARCH process with long memory introduced in Doukhan et al. (2015) and Grublytė and Škarnulis (2015) with conditional variance given by a strictly positive quadratic form of observable stationary sequence. We prove consistency and asymptotic normality of the corresponding QMLE estimates, including the estimate of long memory parameter $0< d < 1/2$. A simulation study of empirical MSE is included.

Scaling transition for long-range dependent Gaussian random fields

In Puplinskaite and Surgailis (2014) we introduced the notion of scaling transition for stationary random fields $X$ on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in terms of partial sums limits, or scaling limits, of $X$ over rectangles whose sides grow at possibly different rate. The present paper establishes the existence of scaling transition for a natural class of stationary Gaussian random fields on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with long-range dependence. The scaling limits of such random fields are identified and characterized by dependence properties of rectangular increments.

Aggregation and long memory: recent developments

It is well-known that the aggregated time series might have very different properties from those of the individual series, in particular, long memory. At the present time, aggregation has become one of the main tools for modelling of long memory processes. We review recent work on contemporaneous aggregation of random-coefficient AR(1) and related models, with particular focus on various long memory properties of the aggregated process.

Contemporaneous aggregation of triangular array of random-coefficient AR(1) processes

We discuss contemporaneous aggregation of independent copies of a triangular array of random-coefficient AR(1) processes with i.i.d. innovations belonging to the domain of attraction of an infinitely divisible law W. The limiting aggregated process is shown to exist, under general assumptions on W and the mixing distribution, and is represented as a mixed infinitely divisible moving-average. Partial sums process of $ is discussed under the assumption E(W^2) is finite and a mixing density regularly varying at the "unit root" x=1 with exponent β>0. We show that the above partial sums process may exhibit four different limit behaviors depending on βand the Lévy triplet of W. Finally, we study the disaggregation problem in spirit of Leipus et al. (2006) and obtain the weak consistency of the corresponding estimator of the mixing distribution in a suitable L_2-space.

Joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of random-coefficient AR(1) processes

We discuss joint temporal and contemporaneous aggregation of $N$ independent copies of AR(1) process with random-coefficient $a \in [0,1)$ when $N$ and time scale $n$ increase at different rate. Assuming that $a$ has a density, regularly varying at $a = 1$ with exponent $-1 < β< 1$, different joint limits of normalized aggregated partial sums are shown to exist when $N^{1/(1+β)}/n$ tends to (i) $\infty$, (ii) 0, (iii) $0 < μ< \infty$. The limit process arising under (iii) admits a Poisson integral representation on $(0,\infty) \times C(\mathbb{R})$ and enjoys "intermediate" properties between fractional Brownian motion limit in (i) and sub-Gaussian limit in (ii).

Moment bounds and central limit theorems for Gaussian subordinated arrays

A general moment bound for sums of products of Gaussian vector's functions extending the moment bound in Taqqu (1977, Lemma 4.5) is established. A general central limit theorem for triangular arrays of nonlinear functionals of multidimensional non-stationary Gaussian sequences is proved. This theorem extends the previous results of Breuer and Major (1981), Arcones (1994) and others. A Berry-Esseen-type bound in the above-mentioned central limit theorem is derived following Nourdin, Peccati and Podolskij (2011). Two applications of the above results are discussed. The first one refers to the asymptotic behavior of a roughness statistic for continuous-time Gaussian processes and the second one is a central limit theorem satisfied by long memory locally stationary process.

Nonparametric estimation of the local Hurst function of multifractional Gaussian processes

A new nonparametric estimator of the local Hurst function of a multifractional Gaussian process based on the increment ratio (IR) statistic is defined. In a general frame, the point-wise and uniform weak and strong consistency and a multidimensional central limit theorem for this estimator are established. Similar results are obtained for a refinement of the generalized quadratic variations (QV) estimator. The example of the multifractional Brownian motion is studied in detail. A simulation study is included showing that the IR-estimator is more accurate than the QV-estimator.

On the mixing structure of stationary increment and self-similar symmetric α-stable processes

Mixed moving average processes appear in the ergodic decomposition of stationary symmetric α-stable (SαS) processes. They correspond to the dissipative part of "deterministic" flows generating SαS processes (Rosinski, 1995). Along these lines we study stationary increment and self-similar SαS processes. Since the classes of stationary increment and self-similar processes can be embedded into the class of stationary processes by the Masani and Lamperti transformations, respectively, we characterize these classes of SαS processes in terms of nonsingular flows and the related cocycles. We illustrate this approach considering various examples of self-similar mixed moving average SαS processes introduced in (Surgailis, Rosinski, Mandrekar and Cambanis, 1992).

A two-sample test for comparison of long memory parameters

We construct a two-sample test for comparison of long memory parameters based on ratios of two rescaled variance (V/S) statistics studied in [Giraitis L., Leipus, R., Philippe, A., 2006. A test for stationarity versus trends and unit roots for a wide class of dependent errors. Econometric Theory 21, 989--1029]. The two samples have the same length and can be mutually independent or dependent. In the latter case, the test statistic is modified to make it asymptotically free of the long-run correlation coefficient between the samples. To diminish the sensitivity of the test on the choice of the bandwidth parameter, an adaptive formula for the bandwidth parameter is derived using the asymptotic expansion in [Abadir, K., Distaso, W., Giraitis, L., 2009. Two estimators of the long-run variance: Beyond short memory. Journal of Econometrics 150, 56--70]. A simulation study shows that the above choice of bandwidth leads to a good size of our comparison test for most values of fractional and ARMA parameters of the simulated series.

Measuring the roughness of random paths by increment ratios

A statistic based on increment ratios (IR) and related to zero crossings of increment sequence is defined and studied for measuring the roughness of random paths. The main advantages of this statistic are robustness to smooth additive and multiplicative trends and applicability to infinite variance processes. The existence of the IR statistic limit (called the IR-roughness below) is closely related to the existence of a tangent process. Three particular cases where the IR-roughness exists and is explicitly computed are considered. Firstly, for a diffusion process with smooth diffusion and drift coefficients, the IR-roughness coincides with the IR-roughness of a Brownian motion and its convergence rate is obtained. Secondly, the case of rough Gaussian processes is studied in detail under general assumptions which do not require stationarity conditions. Thirdly, the IR-roughness of a Lévy process with $α-$stable tangent process is established and can be used to estimate the fractional parameter $α\in (0,2)$ following a central limit theorem.
