Approximate Equivalence in von Neumann Algebras

Suppose $\mathcal{A}$ is a separable unital ASH C*-algebra, $\mathcal{R}$ is a sigma-finite II$_{\infty}$ factor von Neumann algebra, and $π,ρ:\mathcal{A}\rightarrow\mathcal{R}$ are unital $\ast$-homomorphisms such that, for every $a\in\mathcal{A}$, the range projections of $π\left( a\right) $ and $ρ\left( a\right) $ are Murray von Neuman equivalent in $\mathcal{R}% $. We prove that $π$ and $ρ$ are approximately unitarily equivalent modulo $\mathcal{K}_{\mathcal{R}}$, where $\mathcal{K}_{\mathcal{R}}$ is the norm closed ideal generated by the finite projections in $\mathcal{R}$. We also prove a very general result concerning approximate equivalence in arbitrary finite von Neumann algebras.

Central Sequences in Subhomogeneous Unital C*-algebras

Suppose A is a unital subhomogeneous C*-algebra. We show that every central sequence in A is hypercentral if and only if every pointwise limit of a sequence of irreducible representations is multiplicity free. We also show that every central sequence in A is trivial if and only if every pointwise limit of irreducible representations is irreducible. We also give a nice repesentation of the latter algebras.

Path-connected Closures of Unitary Orbits

Suppose A and B are unital C*-algebras and A is separable. Let Rep(A,B) denote the set of all unital *-homomorphisms from A to B with the topology of pointwise convergence. We consider the problem of when the closure of the unitary orbit of a single representation in Rep(A,B) is path-connected. An affirmative answer was given by the first author when A is singly generated and B is the algebra of all operators on a separable Hilbert space. We extend this result for all separable A. We also give an affirmative answer when A is AF or homogeneous and B is a von Neumann algebra or when A is ASH and B is a finite von Neumann algebra.

A Beurling Theorem for Generalized Hardy Spaces on a Multiply Connected Domain

The object of this paper is to prove a version of the Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager invariant subspace theorem for operators on certain Banach spaces of functions on a multiply connected domain in the complex plane. The norms for these spaces are either the usual Lebesgue and Hardy space norms or certain continuous gauge norms. In the Hardy space case the expected corollaries include the characterization of the cyclic vectors as the outer functions in this context, a demonstration that the set of analytic multiplication operators is maximal abelian and reflexive, and a determination of the closed operators that commute with all analytic multiplication operators.

An Extension of the Chen-Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager Theorem

Yanni Chen extended the classical Beurling-Helson-Lowdenslager Theorem for Hardy spaces on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$ defined in terms of continuous gauge norms on $L^{\infty}$ that dominate $\Vert\cdot\Vert_{1}$. We extend Chen's result to a much larger class of continuous gauge norms. A key ingredient is our result that if $α$ is a continuous normalized gauge norm on $L^{\infty}$, then there is a probability measure $λ$, mutually absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{T}$, such that $α\geq c\Vert\cdot\Vert_{1,λ}$ for some $0<c\leq1.$

A non-commutative Beurling's theorem with respect to unitarily invariant norms

In 1967, Arveson invented a non-commutative generalization of classical $H^{\infty},$ known as finite maximal subdiagonal subalgebras, for a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$ with a faithful normal tracial state $τ$. In 2008, Blecher and Labuschagne proved a version of Beurling's theorem on $H^\infty$-right invariant subspaces in a non-commutative $L^{p}(\mathcal M,τ)$ space for $1\le p\le \infty$. In the present paper, we define and study a class of norms ${\mathcal{N}}_{c}(\mathcal M, τ)$ on $\mathcal{M},$ called normalized, unitarily invariant, $\Vert \cdot \Vert_{1}$-dominating, continuous norms, which properly contains the class $\{ \Vert \cdot \Vert_{p}:1\leq p< \infty \}.$ For $α\in \mathcal{N}_{c}(\mathcal M, τ),$ we define a non-commutative $L^{α}({\mathcal{M}},τ)$ space and a non-commutative $H^α$ space. Then we obtain a version of the Blecher-Labuschagne-Beurling invariant subspace theorem on $H^\infty$-right invariant subspaces in a non-commutative $L^{α}({\mathcal{M}},τ)$ space. Key ingredients in the proof of our main result include a characterization theorem of $H^α$ and a density theorem for $L^α(\mathcal M,τ)$.

A note on linear approximately orthogonality preserving mappings

In this paper, linear $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings are studied. We define $\hat{\varepsilon}\left(T\right) $ as the smallest $\varepsilon$ for which $T$ is $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving, and then derive an exact formula for $\hat{\varepsilon}\left( T\right) $ in terms of $\left \Vert T\right \Vert $ and the minimum modulus $m\left( T\right) $ of $T$. We see that $\varepsilon$-orthogonality preserving mappings (for some $\varepsilon<1$) are exactly the operators that are bounded from below. We improve an upper bounded in the stability equation given in [7, Theorem 2.3], which was thought to be sharp.

A note on unital full amalgamated free products of quasi-diagonal C*-algebras

In the paper, we consider the question whether a unital full amalgamated free product of quasidiagonal C*-algebras is quasidiagonal again. We give a sufficient condition such that a unital full amalgamated free product of quasidiagonal C*-algebras with amalgamation over a finite dimensional C*- algebra is quasidiagonal. Applying this result, we conclude that a unital full free product of two AF algebras with amalgamation over a finite-dimensional C*-algebra is AF if there are faithful tracial states on each of these two AF algebras such that the restrictions on the common subalgebra agree.

Lebesgue and Hardy Spaces for Symmetric Norms II: A Vector-Valued Beurling Theorem

Suppose $α$ is a rotationally symmetric norm on $L^{\infty}\left(\mathbb{T}\right) $ and $β$ is a "nice" norm on $L^{\infty}\left(Ω,μ\right) $ where $μ$ is a $σ$-finite measure on $Ω$. We prove a version of Beurling's invariant subspace theorem for the space $L^β\left(μ,H^α\right) .$ Our proof uses the recent version of Beurling's theorem on $H^α\left(\mathbb{T}\right) $ proved by the first author and measurable cross-section techniques. Our result significantly extends a result of H. Rezaei, S. Talebzadeh, and D. Y. Shin.

Approximate Double Commutants and Distance Formulas

We extend work of the first author concering relative double commutants and approximate double commutants of unital subalgebras of unital C*-algebras, including metric versions involving distance estimates. We prove metric results for AH subalgebras of von Neumann algebras or AF subalgebras of primitive C*-algebras. We prove other general results, including some for nonselfadjoint commutative subalgebras, using C*-algebraic versions of the Stone-Weierstrass and Bishop-Stone-Weierstrass theorems.

Free Products of Generalized RFD C*-algebras

If $k$ is an infinite cardinal, we say a C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is residually less than $k$ dimensional, $R_{<k}D,$ if the family of representations of $\mathcal{A}$ on Hilbert spaces of dimension less than $k$ separates the points of $\mathcal{A}.$ We give characterizations of this property, and we show that if $\{\mathcal{A}_{i}:i\in I\} $ is a family of $R_{<k}D$ algebras, then the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is $R_{<k}D$. If each $\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is unital, we give sufficient conditions, depending on the cardinal $k$, for the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast_{\mathbb{C}}}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ in the category of unital C*-algebras to be $R_{<k}D$. We also give a new characterization of RFD, in terms of a lifting property, for separable C*-algebras.

Null-orbit reflexive operators

We introduce and study the notion of null-orbit reflexivity, which is a slight perturbation of the notion of orbit-reflexivity. Positive results for orbit reflexivity and the recent notion of $\mathbb{C}$-orbit reflexivity both extend to null-orbit reflexivity. Of the two known examples of operators that are not orbit-reflexive, one is null-orbit reflexive and the other is not. The class of null-orbit reflexive operators includes the classes of hyponormal, algebraic, compact, strictly block-upper (lower) triangular operators, and operators whose spectral radius is not 1. We also prove that every polynomially bounded operator on a Hilbert space is both orbit-reflexive and null-orbit reflexive.

R-Orbit Reflexive Operators

We completely characterize orbit reflexivity and R-orbit reflexivity for square matrices over the real numbers. Unlike the complex case in which every matrix is orbit reflexive and C-orbit reflexivity is characterized solely in terms of the Jordan form, the orbit reflexivity and R-orbit reflexivity of a real matrix is described in terms of the linear dependence over Q of certain elements of R/Q. We also show that every n-by-n matrix over an uncountable field F is algebraically F-orbit reflexive.

The carpenter and Schur--Horn problems for masas in finite factors

Two classical theorems in matrix theory, due to Schur and Horn, relate the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint matrix to the diagonal entries. These have recently been given a formulation in the setting of operator algebras as the Schur-Horn problem, where matrix algebras and diagonals are replaced respectively by finite factors and maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras (masas). There is a special case of the problem, called the carpenter problem, which can be stated as follows: for a masa A in a finite factor M with conditional expectation E_A, can each x in A with 0 <= x <= 1 be expressed as E_A(p) for a projection p in M? In this paper, we investigate these problems for various masas. We give positive solutions for the generator and radial masas in free group factors, and we also solve affirmatively a weaker form of the Schur-Horm problem for the Cartan masa in the hyperfinite factor.

C-orbit reflexive operators

We introduce the notion of C-orbit reflexivity and study its properties. An operator on a finite-dimensional space is C-orbit reflexive if and only if the two largest blocks in its Jordan form corresponding to nonzero eigenvalues with the largest modulus differ in size by at most one. Most of the proofs of our results in infinite dimensions are obtained from purely algebraic results we obtain from linear-algebraic analogs of C-orbit reflexivity.

Stable and Norm-stable Invariant Subspaces

We prove that if T is an operator on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space whose spectrum and essential spectrum are both connected and whose Fredholm index is only 0 or 1, then the only nontrivial norm-stable invariant subspaces of T are the finite-dimensional ones. We also characterize norm-stable invariant subspaces of any weighted unilateral shift operator. We show that quasianalytic shift operators are points of norm continuity of the lattice of the invariant subspaces. We also provide a necessary condition for strongly stable invariant subspaces for certain operators.
