A short note on the appearance of the simplest antilinear ODE in several physical contexts

In this short note, we review several one-dimensional problems such as those involving linear Schroedinger equation, variable-coefficient Helmholtz equation, Zakharov-Shabat system and Kubelka-Munk equations. We show that they all can be reduced to solving one simple antilinear ordinary differential equation $u^{\prime}\left(x\right)=f\left(x\right)\overline{u\left(x\right)}$ or its nonhomogeneous version $u^{\prime}\left(x\right)=f\left(x\right)\overline{u\left(x\right)}+g\left(x\right)$, $x\in\left(0,x_{0}\right)\subset\mathbb{R}$. We point out some of the advantages of the proposed reformulation and call for further investigation of the obtained ODE.

An adaptive finite element method for high-frequency scattering problems with smoothly varying coefficients

We introduce a new numerical method for solving time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems. The main focus is on plane waves scattered by smoothly varying material inhomogeneities. The proposed method works for any frequency $ω$, but is especially efficient for high-frequency problems. It is based on a time-domain approach and consists of three steps: \emph{i)} computation of a suitable incoming plane wavelet with compact support in the propagation direction; \emph{ii)} solving a scattering problem in the time domain for the incoming plane wavelet; \emph{iii)} reconstruction of the time-harmonic solution from the time-domain solution via a Fourier transform in time. An essential ingredient of the new method is a front-tracking mesh adaptation algorithm for solving the problem in \emph{ii)}. By exploiting the limited support of the wave front, this allows us to make the number of the required degrees of freedom to reach a given accuracy significantly less dependent on the frequency $ω$. We also present a new algorithm for computing the Fourier transform in \emph{iii)} that exploits the reduced number of degrees of freedom corresponding to the adapted meshes. Numerical examples demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method and the fact that the method can also be applied with external source terms such as point sources and sound-soft scatterers. The gained efficiency, however, is limited in the presence of trapping modes.

On the exponential time-decay for the one-dimensional wave equation with variable coefficients

We consider the initial-value problem for the one-dimensional, time-dependent wave equation with positive, Lipschitz continuous coefficients, which are constant outside a bounded region. Under the assumption of compact support of the initial data, we prove that the local energy decays exponentially fast in time, and provide the explicit constant to which the solution converges for large times. We give explicit estimates of the rate of this exponential decay by two different techniques. The first one is based on the definition of a modified, weighted local energy, with suitably constructed weights. The second one is based on the integral formulation of the problem and, under a more restrictive assumption on the variation of the coefficients, allows us to obtain improved decay rates.

From bulk loops to boundary large-N expansion

We study the analytic structure of loop Witten diagrams in Euclidean AdS represented by their conformal partial wave expansions. We show that, as in flat space, amplitude's singularities are associated with non-trivial cuts of the diagram and factorize into products of the coefficient functions for the subdiagrams resulting from these cuts. We consider an example of a one-loop four-point diagram in detail and then briefly discuss how the procedure can be extended to more general diagrams. Finally, we show that this analysis reproduces simple relations that follow from the large-N considerations on the boundary.

On one loop corrections in higher spin gravity

We propose an approach to compute one-loop corrections to the four-point amplitude in the higher spin gravities that are holographically dual to free $O(N)$, $U(N)$ and $USp(N)$ vector models. We compute the double-particle cut of one-loop diagrams by expressing them in terms of tree level four-point amplitudes. We then discuss how the remaining contributions to the complete one-loop diagram can be computed. With certain assumptions we find nontrivial evidence for the shift in the identification of the bulk coupling constant and $1/N$ in accordance with the previously established result for the vacuum energy.

Spinor-Helicity Formalism for Massless Fields in AdS$_4$ III: Contact Four-Point Amplitudes

We study contact four-point amplitudes in the spinor-helicity formalism in anti-de Sitter space. We find that these amplitudes can be brought to an especially simple form, which we call canonical. Next, we classify consistent contact amplitudes by requiring correct transformation properties with respect to the AdS isometry algebra. Finally, we establish a connection between the canonical form of AdS amplitudes and scalar multi-trace conformal primaries in flat space.

Spinor-Helicity Formalism for Massless Fields in AdS$_4$ II: Potentials

In a recent letter we suggested a natural generalization of the flat-space spinor-helicity formalism in four dimensions to anti-de Sitter space. In the present paper we give some technical details that were left implicit previously. For lower-spin fields we also derive potentials associated with the previously found plane wave solutions for field strengths. We then employ these potentials to evaluate some three-point amplitudes. This analysis illustrates a typical computation of an amplitude without internal lines in our formalism.

Bulk quartic vertices from boundary four-point correlators

We present arguments which suggest that the bulk higher-spin gravity duals of weakly-coupled conformal field theories obey some refined notion of locality. In particular, we discuss the Mellin amplitude programme in this context. We focus on the $O(N)$ vector model and minimal higher-spin gravity as a paradigmatic example of such holographic dual pairs. We restrict ourselves to three- and four-point functions of scalar primary operators, but the qualitative conclusions are expected to hold for the generic case.

New Unfolded Higher Spin Systems in $AdS_3$

We investigate the unfolded formulation of bosonic Lorentz tensor fields of arbitrary spin in $AdS_3$ containing a parity breaking mass parameter. They include deformations of the linearisations of the Prokushkin--Vasiliev higher spin theory around its critical points. They also provide unfolded formulations of linearized topologically massive higher spin fields including their critical versions. The gauge invariant degrees of freedom are captured by infinite towers of zero forms. We also introduce two inequivalent sets of gauge potentials given by trace constrained Fronsdal fields and trace unconstrained metric-like fields.

On quantum corrections in higher-spin theory in flat space

We consider an interacting theory of an infinite tower of massless higher-spin fields in flat space with cubic vertices and their coupling constants found previously by Metsaev. We compute the one-loop bubble diagram part of the self-energy of the spin 0 member of the tower by summing up all higher-spin loop contributions. We find that the result contains an exponentially UV divergent part and we discuss how it could be cancelled by a tadpole contribution depending on yet to be determined quartic interaction vertex. We also compute the tree-level four-scalar scattering amplitude due to all higher-spin exchanges and discuss its inconsistency with the BCFW constructibility condition. We comment on possible relation to similar computations in AdS background in connection with AdS/CFT.

Constrained optimization in classes of analytic functions with prescribed pointwise values

We consider an overdetermined problem for Laplace equation on a disk with partial boundary data where additional pointwise data inside the disk have to be taken into account. After reformulation, this ill-posed problem reduces to a bounded extremal problem of best norm-constrained approximation of partial L2 boundary data by traces of holomorphic functions which satisfy given pointwise interpolation conditions. The problem of best norm-constrained approximation of a given L2 function on a subset of the circle by the trace of a H2 function has been considered in [Baratchart \& Leblond, 1998]. In the present work, we extend such a formulation to the case where the additional interpolation conditions are imposed. We also obtain some new results that can be applied to the original problem: we carry out stability analysis and propose a novel method of evaluation of the approximation and blow-up rates of the solution in terms of a Lagrange parameter leading to a highly-efficient computational algorithm for solving the problem.

Quartic AdS Interactions in Higher-Spin Gravity from Conformal Field Theory

Clarifying the locality properties of higher-spin gravity is a pressing task, but notoriously difficult due to the absence of a weakly-coupled flat regime. The simplest non-trivial case where this question can be addressed is the quartic self-interaction of the AdS scalar field present in the higher-spin multiplet. We investigate this issue in the context of the holographic duality between the minimal bosonic higher-spin theory on AdS$_4$ and the free $O\left(N\right)$ vector model in three dimensions. In particular, we determine the exact explicit form of the derivative expansion of the bulk scalar quartic vertex. The quartic vertex is obtained from the field theory four-point function of the operator dual to the bulk scalar, by making use of our previous results for the Witten diagrams of higher-spin exchanges. This is facilitated by establishing the conformal block expansions of both the boundary four-point function and the dual bulk Witten diagram amplitudes. We show that the vertex we find satisfies a generalised notion of locality.

Towards holographic higher-spin interactions: Four-point functions and higher-spin exchange

Within holography, we calculate the contribution of an arbitrary spin-s gauge boson exchange in $AdS_{d+1}$ to the four-point function with scalar operators on the boundary. As an important ingredient, we first compute the complete bulk-to-bulk propagators for massless bosonic higher-spin fields in the metric-like formulation, in any dimension and in various gauges. The split representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagators in terms of bulk-to-boundary propagators allows to present the higher-spin exchange diagram in the form of a conformal partial wave expansion. Our results provide a step towards the larger goal of the holographic reconstruction of bulk interactions, and of clarifying bulk locality.

Higher Spin Fields and Symplectic Geometry

We argue that higher spin fields originate from Hamiltonian mechanics and play a role of gauge fields ensuring covariance of geometric observables such as length and volume with respect to canonical transformations in the same way as a metric tensor in Riemannian geometry ensures covariance with respect to diffeomorphisms. We consider a reparametrization invariant action of a point particle in Hamiltonian form. Reparametrization invariance is achieved in the standard way by coupling to the auxiliary world-line metric. Identifying Hamiltonian function with a generating function for higher spin fields this action can be viewed as an action for the point particle in a higher spin background, while canonical transformations act as higher spin symmetries. We define the gauge invariant length as a proper time of a particle moving along the geodesic. Following the usual geometrical interpretation we introduce the volume form and the scalar curvature for a combined lower spin sector. As for the general case, we show that notions of local volume and scalar curvature are not compatible with symplectic transformations. We propose symplectically invariant counterparts for the total volume of the space and Einstein-Hilbert action.

On the uniqueness of higher-spin symmetries in AdS and CFT

We study the uniqueness of higher-spin algebras which are at the core of higher-spin theories in AdS and of CFTs with exact higher-spin symmetry, i.e. conserved tensors of rank greater than two. The Jacobi identity for the gauge algebra is the simplest consistency test that appears at the quartic order for a gauge theory. Similarly, the algebra of charges in a CFT must also obey the Jacobi identity. These algebras are essentially the same. Solving the Jacobi identity under some simplifying assumptions spelled out, we obtain that the Eastwood-Vasiliev algebra is the unique solution for d=4 and d>6. In 5d there is a one-parameter family of algebras that was known before. In particular, we show that the introduction of a single higher-spin gauge field/current automatically requires the infinite tower of higher-spin gauge fields/currents. The result implies that from all the admissible non-Abelian cubic vertices in AdS(d), that have been recently classified for totally symmetric higher-spin gauge fields, only one vertex can pass the Jacobi consistency test. This cubic vertex is associated with a gauge deformation that is the germ of the Eastwood-Vasiliev's higher-spin algebra.

Frame-like off-shell dualisation for mixed-symmetry gauge fields

We construct a purely frame-like parent action that allows to dualise, at the off-shell level, an arbitrary mixed-symmetry bosonic massless fields in Minkowski background of dimensions d. Starting from any massless mixed-symmetry gauge field in the standard Skvortsov frame-like formulation and following an off-shell dualisation procedure, we obtain dual theories which are on-shell related by so(d-2) Hodge duality. The Hodge dualisation can be done on any column of the Young diagram characterizing the generalised spin of the original frame-like field. Dualisation with respect to the first column of the Young diagram leads to a standard frame-like action for the dual field. Any other dualisation results in an action which cannot be described by the standard frame-like formalism, as the on-shell field is not so(d-2) traceless. Instead, the latter field is given by the product of an irreducible traceless tensor and a certain number of so(d-2)-invariant metrics, and the corresponding dual frame-like action is new. Such actions require supplementary fields, which naturally arise along the lines of the approach that we propose.

Non-abelian cubic vertices for higher-spin fields in anti-de Sitter space

We use the Fradkin-Vasiliev procedure to construct the full set of non-abelian cubic vertices for totally symmetric higher spin gauge fields in anti-de Sitter space. The number of such vertices is given by a certain tensor-product multiplicity. We discuss the one-to-one relation between our result and the list of non-abelian gauge deformations in flat space obtained elsewhere via the cohomological approach. We comment about the uniqueness of Vasiliev's simplest higher-spin algebra in relation with the (non)associativity properties of the gauge algebras that we classified. The gravitational interactions for (partially)-massless (mixed)-symmetry fields are also discussed. We also argue that those mixed-symmetry and/or partially-massless fields that are described by one-form connections within the frame-like approach can have nonabelian interactions among themselves and again the number of nonabelian vertices should be given by tensor product multiplicities.

Off-Shell Hodge Dualities in Linearised Gravity and E11

In a spacetime of dimension n, the dual graviton is characterised by a Young diagram with two columns, the first of length n-3 and the second of length one. In this paper we perform the off-shell dualisation relating the dual graviton to the double-dual graviton, displaying the precise off-shell field content and gauge invariances. We then show that one can further perform infinitely many off-shell dualities, reformulating linearised gravity in an infinite number of equivalent actions. The actions require supplementary mixed-symmetry fields which are contained within the generalised Kac-Moody algebra E11 and are associated with null and imaginary roots.
