KP-II approximation for a scalar FPU system on a 2D square lattice

We consider a scalar Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system on a square 2D lattice. The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP-II) equation can be derived by means of multiple scale expansions to describe unidirectional long waves of small amplitude with slowly varying transverse modulations. We show that the KP-II approximation makes correct predictions about the dynamics of the original scalar FPU system. An existing approximation result is extended to an arbitrary direction of wave propagation. The main novelty of this work is the use of Fourier transform in the analysis of the FPU system in strain variables.

Solitons on the rarefactive wave background via the Darboux transformation

Rarefactive waves and dispersive shock waves are generated from the step-like initial data in many nonlinear evolution equations including the classical example of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. When a solitary wave is injected on the step-like initial data, it is either transmitted over the background or trapped in the rarefactive wave. We show that the transmitted soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation for the KdV equation. On the other hand, no trapped soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation and we show with numerical simulations that the trapped soliton disappears in the long-time dynamics of the rarefactive wave.

Stability of black solitons in optical systems with intensity-dependent dispersion

Black solitons are identical in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with intensity-dependent dispersion and the cubic defocusing NLS equation. We prove that the intensity-dependent dispersion introduces new properties in the stability analysis of the black soliton. First, the spectral stability problem possesses only isolated eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. Second, the energetic stability argument holds in Sobolev spaces with exponential weights. Third, the black soliton persists with respect to addition of a small decaying potential and remains spectrally stable when it is pinned to the minimum points of the effective potential. The same model exhibits a family of traveling dark solitons for every wave speed and we incorporate properties of these dark solitons for small wave speeds in the analysis of orbital stability of the black soliton.

Stability of smooth solitary waves in the b-Camassa-Holm equation

We derive the precise stability criterion for smooth solitary waves in the b-family of Camassa-Holm equations. The smooth solitary waves exist on the constant background. In the integrable cases b = 2 and b = 3, we show analytically that the stability criterion is satisfied and smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable with respect to perturbations in $H^3(\mathbb{R})$. In the non-integrable cases, we show numerically and asymptotically that the stability criterion is satisfied for every b > 1. The orbital stability theory relies on a different Hamiltonian formulation compared to the Hamiltonian formulations available in the integrable cases.

Chern-Simons-Schrodinger theory on a one-dimensional lattice

We propose a gauge-invariant system of the Chern-Simons-Schrodinger type on a one-dimensional lattice. By using the spatial gauge condition, we prove local and global well-posedness of the initial-value problem in the space of square summable sequences for the scalar field. We also study the existence region of the stationary bound states, which depends on the lattice spacing and the nonlinearity power. A major difficulty in the existence problem is related to the lack of variational formulation of the stationary equations. Our approach is based on the implicit function theorem in the anti-continuum limit and the solvability constraint in the continuum limit.

Edge-localized states on quantum graphs in the limit of large mass

In this work, we construct and quantify asymptotically in the limit of large mass a variety of edge-localized stationary states of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a quantum graph. The method is applicable to general bounded and unbounded graphs. The solutions are constructed by matching a localized large amplitude elliptic function on a single edge with an exponentially smaller remainder on the rest of the graph. This is done by studying the intersections of Dirichlet-to-Neumann manifolds (nonlinear analogues of Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps) corresponding to the two parts of the graph. For the quantum graph with a given set of pendant, looping, and internal edges, we find the edge on which the state of smallest energy at fixed mass is localized. Numerical studies of several examples are used to illustrate the analytical results.

Instability of double-periodic waves in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation

It is shown how to compute the instability rates for the double-periodic solutions to the cubic NLS (nonlinear Schrodinger) equation by using the Lax linear equations. The wave function modulus of the double-periodic solutions is periodic both in space and time coordinates; such solutions generalize the standing waves which have the time-independent and space-periodic wave function modulus. Similar to other waves in the NLS equation, the double-periodic solutions are spectrally unstable and this instability is related to the bands of the Lax spectrum outside the imaginary axis. A simple numerical method is used to compute the unstable spectrum and to compare the instability rates of the double-periodic solutions with those of the standing periodic waves.

New variational characterization of periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation

Periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation have been previously characterized as constrained minimizers of energy subject to fixed momentum and mass. Here we characterize these periodic waves as constrained minimizers of the quadratic form of energy subject to fixed cubic part of energy and the zero mean. This new variational characterization allows us to unfold the existence region of travelling periodic waves and to give a sharp criterion for spectral stability of periodic waves with respect to perturbations of the same period. The sharp stability criterion is given by the monotonicity of the map from the wave speed to the wave momentum similarly to the stability criterion for solitary waves.

Periodic waves in the fractional modified Korteweg--de Vries equation

Periodic waves in the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are revisited in the setting of the fractional Laplacian. Two families of solutions in the local case are given by the sign-definite dnoidal and sign-indefinite cnoidal solutions. Both solutions can be characterized in the general fractional case as global minimizers of the quadratic part of the energy functional subject to the fixed $L^4$ norm: the sign-definite (sign-indefinite) solutions are obtained in the subspace of even (odd) functions. Morse index is computed for both solutions and the spectral stability criterion is derived. We show numerically that the family of sign-definite solutions has a generic fold bifurcation for the fractional Laplacian of lower regularity and the family of sign-indefinite solutions has a generic symmetry-breaking bifurcation both in the fractional and local cases.

Rogue waves on the periodic wave background in the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We present exact solutions for rogue waves arising on the background of periodic waves in the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The exact solutions are obtained by characterizing the Lax spectrum related to the periodic waves and by using the one-fold Darboux transformation. The magnification factor of the rogue waves is computed in the closed analytical form. We relate the rogue wave solutions to the modulation instability of the periodic wave background.

Standing waves of the quintic NLS equation on the tadpole graph

The tadpole graph consists of a circle and a half-line attached at a vertex. We analyze standing waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quintic power nonlinearity equipped with the Neumann-Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the vertex. The profile of the standing wave with the frequency $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ is characterized as a global minimizer of the quadratic part of energy constrained to the unit sphere in $L^6$. The set of minimizers includes the set of ground states of the system, which are the global minimizers of the energy at constant mass ($L^2$-norm), but it is actually wider. While ground states exist only for a certain interval of masses, the standing waves exist for every $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ and correspond to a bigger interval of masses. It is shown that there exist critical frequencies $ω_0$ and $ω_1$ such that the standing waves are the ground states for $ω\in [ω_0,0)$, local minimizers of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (ω_1,ω_0)$, and saddle points of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (-\infty,ω_1)$. Proofs make use of both the variational methods and the analytical theory for differential equations.

Standing waves on a flower graph

A flower graph consists of a half line and $N$ symmetric loops connected at a single vertex with $N \geq 2$ (it is called the tadpole graph if $N = 1$). We consider positive single-lobe states on the flower graph in the framework of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The main novelty of our paper is a rigorous application of the period function for second-order differential equations towards understanding the symmetries and bifurcations of standing waves on metric graphs. We show that the positive single-lobe symmetric state (which is the ground state of energy for small fixed mass) undergoes exactly one bifurcation for larger mass, at which point $(N-1)$ branches of other positive single-lobe states appear: each branch has $K$ larger components and $(N-K)$ smaller components, where $1 \leq K \leq N-1$. We show that only the branch with $K = 1$ represents a local minimizer of energy for large fixed mass, however, the ground state of energy is not attained for large fixed mass. Analytical results obtained from the period function are illustrated numerically.

The monoatomic FPU system as a limit of a diatomic FPU system

We consider a diatomic infinite Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system with light and heavy particles. For a small mass ratio, we prove error estimates for the approximation of the dynamics of this system by the dynamics of the monoatomic FPU system. The light particles are squeezed by the heavy particles at the mean value of their displacements. The error estimates are derived by means of the energy method and hold for sufficiently long times, for which the dynamics of the monoatomic FPU system is observed. The approximation result is restricted to sufficiently small displacements of the heavy particles relatively to each other.

Periodic travelling waves of the modified KdV equation and rogue waves on the periodic background

We address the most general periodic travelling wave of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation written as a rational function of Jacobian elliptic functions. By applying an algebraic method which relates the periodic travelling waves and the squared periodic eigenfunctions of the Lax operators, we characterize explicitly the location of eigenvalues in the periodic spectral problem away from the imaginary axis. We show that Darboux transformations with the periodic eigenfunctions remain in the class of the same periodic travelling waves of the mKdV equation. In a general setting, there are exactly three symmetric pairs of eigenvalues away from the imaginary axis, and we give a new representation of the second non-periodic solution to the Lax equations for the same eigenvalues. We show that Darboux transformations with the non-periodic solutions to the Lax equations produce rogue waves on the periodic background, which are either brought from infinity by propagating algebraic solitons or formed in a finite region of the time-space plane.

Breathers in Hamiltonian ${\cal PT}$-symmetric chains of coupled pendula under a resonant periodic force

We derive a Hamiltonian version of the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes synchronized dynamics of coupled pendula driven by a periodic movement of their common strings. In the limit of weak coupling between the pendula, we classify the existence and spectral stability of breathers (time-periodic solutions localized in the lattice) supported near one pair of coupled pendula. Orbital stability or instability of breathers is proved in a subset of the existence region.

Existence of global solutions to the derivative NLS equation with the inverse scattering transform method

We address existence of global solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation without the small-norm assumption. By using the inverse scattering transform method without eigenvalues and resonances, we construct a unique global solution in $H^2(\mathbb{R}) \cap H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ which is also Lipschitz continuous with respect to the initial data. Compared to the existing literature on the spectral problem for the DNLS equation, the corresponding Riemann--Hilbert problem is defined in the complex plane with the jump on the real line.

Global solutions to the shallow-water system

The classical system of shallow-water (Saint--Venant) equations describes long surface waves in an inviscid incompressible fluid of a variable depth. Although shock waves are expected in this quasilinear hyperbolic system for a wide class of initial data, we find a sufficient condition on the initial data that guarantees existence of a global classical solution continued from a local solution. The sufficient conditions can be easily satisfied for the fluid flow propagating in one direction with two characteristic velocities of the same sign and two monotonically increasing Riemann invariants. We prove that these properties persist in the time evolution of the classical solutions to the shallow-water equations and provide no shock wave singularities formed in a finite time over a half-line or an infinite line. On a technical side, we develop a novel method of an additional argument, which allows to obtain local and global solutions to the quasilinear hyperbolic systems in physical rather than characteristic variables.

Long-time stability of breathers in Hamiltonian $\cal PT$-symmetric lattices

We consider the Hamiltonian version of a $\cal PT$-symmetric lattice that describes dynamics of coupled pendula under a resonant periodic force. Using the asymptotic limit of a weak coupling between the pendula, we prove the nonlinear long-time stability of breathers (time-periodic solutions localized in the lattice) by using the Lyapunov method. Breathers are saddle points of the extended energy function, which are located between the continuous bands of positive and negative energy. Nevertheless, we construct an approximate Lyapunov function and estimate its evolution on a long but finite time interval. The nonlinear stability analysis becomes possible for the $\cal PT$-symmetric lattice only because of the existence of a Hamiltonian structure.

On the linearized log-KdV equation

The logarithmic KdV (log-KdV) equation admits global solutions in an energy space and exhibits Gaussian solitary waves. Orbital stability of Gaussian solitary waves is known to be an open problem. We address properties of solutions to the linearized log-KdV equation at the Gaussian solitary waves. By using the decomposition of solutions in the energy space in terms of Hermite functions, we show that the time evolution is related to a Jacobi difference operator with a limit circle at infinity. This exact reduction allows us to characterize both spectral and linear orbital stability of solitary waves. We also introduce a convolution representation of solutions to the log-KdV equation with the Gaussian weight and show that the time evolution in such a weighted space is dissipative with the exponential rate of decay.

Orbital stability of periodic waves in the class of reduced Ostrovsky equations

Periodic travelling waves are considered in the class of reduced Ostrovsky equations that describe low-frequency internal waves in the presence of rotation. The reduced Ostrovsky equations with either quadratic or cubic nonlinearities can be transformed to integrable equations of the Klein--Gordon type by means of a change of coordinates. By using the conserved momentum and energy as well as an additional conserved quantity due to integrability, we prove that small-amplitude periodic waves are orbitally stable with respect to subharmonic perturbations, with period equal to an integer multiple of the period of the wave. The proof is based on construction of a Lyapunov functional, which is convex at the periodic wave and is conserved in the time evolution. We also show numerically that convexity of the Lyapunov functional holds for periodic waves of arbitrary amplitudes.

Existence and stability of PT-symmetric vortices in nonlinear two-dimensional square lattices

Vortices symmetric with respect to simultaneous parity and time reversing transformations are considered on the square lattice in the framework of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The existence and stability of vortex configurations is analyzed in the limit of weak coupling between the lattice sites, when predictions on the elementary cell of a square lattice (i.e., a single square) can be extended to a large (yet finite) array of lattice cells. Our analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical computations.

Nonlinear instabilities of multi-site breathers in Klein-Gordon lattices

In the present work, we explore the possibility of excited breather states in a nonlinear Klein--Gordon lattice to become nonlinearly unstable, even if they are found to be spectrally stable. The mechanism for this fundamentally nonlinear instability is through the resonance with the wave continuum of a multiple of an internal mode eigenfrequency in the linearization of excited breather states. For the nonlinear instability, the internal mode must have its Krein signature opposite to that of the wave continuum. This mechanism is not only theoretically proposed, but also numerically corroborated through two concrete examples of the Klein--Gordon lattice with a soft (Morse) and a hard ($ϕ^4$) potential. Compared to the case of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger lattice, the Krein signature of the internal mode relative to that of the wave continuum may change depending on the period of the excited breather state. For the periods for which the Krein signatures of the internal mode and the wave continuum coincide, excited breather states are observed to be nonlinearly stable.

Self-similar solutions for reversing interfaces in the nonlinear diffusion equation with constant absorption

We consider the slow nonlinear diffusion equation subject to a constant absorption rate and construct local self-similar solutions for reversing (and anti-reversing) interfaces, where an initially advancing (receding) interface gives way to a receding (advancing) one. We use an approach based on invariant manifolds, which allows us to determine the required asymptotic behaviour for small and large values of the concentration. We then `connect' the requisite asymptotic behaviours using a robust and accurate numerical scheme. By doing so, we are able to furnish a rich set of self-similar solutions for both reversing and anti-reversing interfaces.

Gaussian solitary waves and compactons in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices with Hertzian potentials

We consider a class of fully-nonlinear Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) lattices, consisting of a chain of particles coupled by fractional power nonlinearities of order $α>1$. This class of systems incorporates a classical Hertzian model describing acoustic wave propagation in chains of touching beads in the absence of precompression. We analyze the propagation of localized waves when $α$ is close to unity. Solutions varying slowly in space and time are searched with an appropriate scaling, and two asymptotic models of the chain of particles are derived consistently. The first one is a logarithmic KdV equation, and possesses linearly orbitally stable Gaussian solitary wave solutions. The second model consists of a generalized KdV equation with Hölder-continuous fractional power nonlinearity and admits compacton solutions, i.e. solitary waves with compact support. When $α\rightarrow 1^+$, we numerically establish the asymptotically Gaussian shape of exact FPU solitary waves with near-sonic speed, and analytically check the pointwise convergence of compactons towards the limiting Gaussian profile.

Global existence of solutions to coupled ${\cal PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, where one equation includes gain and the other one includes losses. Strengths of the gain and the loss are equal, i.e., the resulting system is parity-time (${\cal PT}$) symmetric. The model includes both linear and nonlinear couplings, such that when all nonlinear coefficients are equal, the system represents the ${\cal PT}$-generalization of the Manakov model. In the one-dimensional case, we prove the existence of a global solution to the Cauchy problem in energy space $H^1$, such that the $H^1$-norm of the global solution may grow in time. In the Manakov case, we show analytically that the $L^2$-norm of the global solution is bounded for all times and numerically that the $H^1$-norm is also bounded. In the two-dimensional case, we obtain a constraint on the $L^2$-norm of the initial data that ensures the existence of a global solution in the energy space $H^1$.

Nonlinear modes in a generalized ${\cal PT}$-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We generalize a finite parity-time (${\cal PT}$-) symmetric network of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger type and obtain general results on linear stability of the zero equilibrium, on the nonlinear dynamics of the dimer model, as well as on the existence and stability of large-amplitude stationary nonlinear modes. A result of particular importance and novelty is the classification of all possible stationary modes in the limit of large amplitudes. We also discover a new integrable configuration of a ${\cal PT}$-symmetric dimer.

Hamiltonian systems with an infinite number of localized travelling waves

In many Hamiltonian systems, propagation of steadily travelling solitons or kinks is prohibited because of resonances with linear excitations. We show that Hamiltonian systems with resonances may admit an infinite number of travelling solitons or kinks if the closest to the real axis singularities in the complex upper half-plane of limiting asymptotic solution are of the form $z_\pm=\pmα+iβ$, $α\ne 0$. This quite a general statement is illustrated by examples of the fifth-order Korteweg--de Vries-type equation, the discrete cubic-quintic Klein--Gordon equation, and the nonlocal double sine--Gordon equations.

Nonlinear dynamics in PT-symmetric lattices

We consider nonlinear dynamics in a finite parity-time-symmetric chain of the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (dNLS) type. We work in the range of the gain and loss coefficient when the zero equilibrium state is neutrally stable. We prove that the solutions of the dNLS equation do not blow up in a finite time and the trajectories starting with small initial data remain bounded for all times. Nevertheless, for arbitrary values of the gain and loss parameter, there exist trajectories starting with large initial data that grow exponentially fast for larger times with a rate that is rigorously identified. Numerical computations illustrate these analytical results for dimers and quadrimers.

Nonlinear stationary states in PT-symmetric lattices

In the present work we examine both the linear and nonlinear properties of two related PT-symmetric systems of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (dNLS) type. First, we examine the parameter range for which the finite PT-dNLS chains have real eigenvalues and PT-symmetric linear eigenstates. We develop a systematic way of analyzing the nonlinear stationary states with the implicit function theorem at an analogue of the anti-continuum limit for the dNLS equation. Secondly, we consider the case when a finite PT-dNLS chain is embedded as a defect in the infinite dNLS lattice. We show that the stability intervals of the infinite PT-dNLS lattice are wider than in the case of a finite PT-dNLS chain. We also prove existence of localized stationary states (discrete solitons) in the analogue of the anti-continuum limit for the dNLS equation. Numerical computations illustrate the existence of nonlinear stationary states, as well as the stability and saddle-center bifurcations of discrete solitons.

On numerical modelling of contact lines in fluid flows

We study numerically a reduced model proposed by Benilov and Vynnycky (J. Fluid Mech. {\bf 718} (2013), 481), who examined the behavior of a contact line with a $180^{\circ}$ contact angle between liquid and a moving plate, in the context of a two-dimensional Couette flow. The model is given by a linear fourth-order advection-diffusion equation with an unknown velocity, which is to be determined dynamically from an additional boundary condition at the contact line. The main claim of Benilov and Vynnycky is that for any physically relevant initial condition, there is a finite positive time at which the velocity of the contact line tends to negative infinity, whereas the profile of the fluid flow remains regular. Additionally, it is claimed that the velocity behaves as the logarithmic function of time near the blow-up time. Compared to the previous computations based on COMSOL built-on algorithms, we use MATLAB software package and develop a direct finite-difference method to study dynamics of the reduced model under different initial conditions. We confirm the first claim but also show that the blow-up behavior is better approximated by a power function, compared with the logarithmic function. This numerical result suggests a simple explanation of the blow-up behavior of contact lines.

Spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations

This paper concerns spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations. The relevant eigenvalue problem is defined by the composition of an unbounded self-adjoint operator with a finite number of negative eigenvalues and an unbounded non-invertible symplectic operator $\partial_x$. The instability index theorem is proven under a generic assumption on the self-adjoint operator both in the case of solitary waves and periodic waves. This result is reviewed in the context of other recent results on spectral stability of nonlinear waves in KdV-type evolution equations.

On transverse stability of discrete line solitons

We obtain sharp criteria for transverse stability and instability of line solitons in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations on one- and two-dimensional lattices near the anti-continuum limit. On a two-dimensional lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely stable (unstable) when it bifurcates from the $X$ ($Γ$) point of the dispersion surface. On a one-dimensional (stripe) lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely unstable for both signs of transverse dispersion. If this transverse dispersion has the opposite sign to the discrete dispersion, the instability is caused by a resonance between isolated eigenvalues of negative energy and the continuous spectrum of positive energy. These results hold for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities via a staggering transformation. When the line soliton is transversely unstable, asymptotic expressions for unstable eigenvalues are also derived. These analytical results are compared with numerical results, and perfect agreement is obtained.

Periodic Travelling Waves in Dimer Granular Chains

We study bifurcations of periodic travelling waves in granular dimer chains from the anti-continuum limit, when the mass ratio between the light and heavy beads is zero. We show that every limiting periodic wave is uniquely continued with respect to the mass ratio parameter and the periodic waves with the wavelength larger than a certain critical value are spectrally stable. Numerical computations are developed to study how this solution family is continued to the limit of equal mass ratio between the beads, where periodic travelling waves of granular monomer chains exist.

Sharp bounds on enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation

We use the Cole--Hopf transformation and the Laplace method for the heat equation to justify the numerical results on enstrophy growth in the viscous Burgers equation on the unit circle. We show that the maximum enstrophy achieved in the time evolution is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{3/2}$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the large initial enstrophy, whereas the time needed for reaching the maximal enstrophy is scaled as $\mathcal{E}^{-1/2}$. These bounds are sharp for sufficiently smooth initial conditions.

Paradoxical transitions to instabilities in hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flows

By methods of modern spectral analysis, we rigorously find distributions of eigenvalues of linearized operators associated with an ideal hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flow. Transition to instability in the limit of vanishing magnetic field has a discontinuous change compared to the Rayleigh stability criterion for hydrodynamical flows, which is known as the Velikhov-Chandrasekhar paradox.
