Double-flat-top half-vortices and self-bound solitary wave billiards in cubic-quintic media with intermodal attraction

We consider a bimodal light field envelope propagating in a bulk medium characterized by competing cubic and quintic nonlinearities. The subfields are coupled by a cross-phase modulation term and experience effective attraction. We find dynamically stable stationary states which have two distinct flat-top regions with different intensities. These solutions represent half-vortices, where the first and second components are essentially different and, in particular, carry different topological charges: zero for one component and nonzero for the other. The typical propagation of an unstable half-vortex leads to the splitting of the central vortex core into several fragments which quasielastically interact with the boundary of the flat-top region. This behavior is interpreted as a self-bound solitary wave billiard, where the emerging fragments are the billiard balls and the flat-top region is the dynamically deforming table.

Bose-Einstein condensates in quasi-periodic lattices: bosonic Josephson junction, self-trapping, and multi-mode dynamics

Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices with constituent sublattices having incommensurate periods is considered. Using the rational approximations for the incommensurate periods, we show that below the mobility edge the localized states are distributed nearly homogeneously in the space and explore the versatility of such potentials. We show that superposition of symmetric and anti-symmetric localized can be used to simulate various physical dynamical regimes, known to occur in double-well and multi-well traps. As examples, we obtain an alternative realization of a bosonic Josephson junction, whose coherent oscillations display beatings or switching in the weakly nonlinear regime, describe selftrapping and four-mode dynamics, mimicking coherent oscillations and self-trapping in four-well potentials. These phenomena can be observed for different pairs of modes, which are localized due to the interference rather than due to a confining trap. The results obtained using few-mode approximations are compared with the direct numerical simulations of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The localized states and the related dynamics are found to persist for long times even in the repulsive condensates. We also described bifurcations of the families of nonlinear modes, the symmetry breaking and stable minigap solitons.

Localization of ultracold atoms in incommensurate spin-orbit-coupling and Zeeman lattices

We consider a particle governed by a one-dimensional Hamiltonian in which artificial periodic spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman lattice have incommensurate periods. Using best rational approximations to such quasiperiodic Hamiltonian, the problem is reduced to description of spinor states in a superlattice. In the absence of a constant Zeeman splitting, the system acquires an additional symmetry, which hinders the localization. However, if the lattices are deep enough, then localized states can appear even for Zeeman field with zero or small mean value. Spatial distribution of localized modes is nearly uniform and is directly related to the topological properties of the effective superlattice: center-of-mass coordinates of modes are determined by Zak phases computed from the superlattice band structure. The best rational approximations feature the `memory' effect: each rational approximation holds the information about the energies and spatial distribution of the modes obtained under preceding, less accurate approximations. Dispersion of low-energy initial wavepackets is characterized by the law $\propto t^β$ with $β$ varying between $1/2$ at the initial stage and $1$ at longer, but still finite-time, evolution. The dynamics of initial wavepackets, exciting mainly localized modes, manifests quantum revivals.

On non-existence of continuous families of stationary nonlinear modes for a class of complex potentials

There are two cases when the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with an external complex potential is well-known to support continuous families of localized stationary modes: the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric potentials and the Wadati potentials. Recently Y. Kominis and coauthors [Chaos, Solitons and Fractals, 118, 222-233 (2019)] have suggested that the continuous families can be also found in complex potentials of the form $W(x)=W_{1}(x)+iCW_{1,x}(x)$, where $C$ is an arbitrary real and $W_1(x)$ is a real-valued and bounded differentiable function. Here we study in detail nonlinear stationary modes that emerge in complex potentials of this type (for brevity, we call them W-dW potentials). First, we assume that the potential is small and employ asymptotic methods to construct a family of nonlinear modes. Our asymptotic procedure stops at the terms of the $\varepsilon^2$ order, where small $\varepsilon$ characterizes amplitude of the potential. We therefore conjecture that no continuous families of authentic nonlinear modes exist in this case, but "pseudo-modes" that satisfy the equation up to $\varepsilon^2$-error can indeed be found in W-dW potentials. Second, we consider the particular case of a W-dW potential well of finite depth and support our hypothesis with qualitative and numerical arguments. Third, we simulate the nonlinear dynamics of found pseudo-modes and observe that, if the amplitude of W-dW potential is small, then the pseudo-modes are robust and display persistent oscillations around a certain position predicted by the asymptotic expansion. Finally, we study the authentic stationary modes which do not form a continuous family, but exist as isolated points. Numerical simulations reveal dynamical instability of these solutions.

A universal form of arrays with spectral singularities

An array of non-Hermitian optical waveguides can operate as a laser or as a coherent perfect absorber, which corresponds to a spectral singularity of the underlying discrete complex potential. We show that all lattice potentials with spectral singularities are characterized by the universal form of the gain-and-loss distribution. Using this result we systematically construct potentials characterized by several spectral singularities at arbitrary wavelengths, as well as potentials with second-order spectral singularities in their spectra. Higher-order spectral singularities demonstrate a greatly enhanced response to incident beams resulting in the excitation of high-intensity lasing modes.

A universal form of complex potentials with spectral singularities

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for complex potentials in the Schrödinger equation to enable spectral singularities (SSs) and show that such potentials have the universal form $U(x) = -w^2(x) - iw_x(x) + k_0^2$, where $w(x)$ is a differentiable function, such that $\lim_{x\to \pm \infty}w(x)=\mp k_0$, and $k_0$ is a nonzero real. We also find that when $k_0$ is a complex number, then the eigenvalue of the corresponding Shrödinger operator has an exact solution which, depending on $k_0$, represents a coherent perfect absorber (CPA), laser, a localized bound state, a quasi bound state in the continuum (a quasi-BIC), or an exceptional point (the latter requiring additional conditions). Thus, $k_0$ is a bifurcation parameter that describes transformations among all those solutions. Additionally, in a more specific case of a real-valued function $w(x)$ the resulting potential, although not being $PT$ symmetric, can feature a self-dual spectral singularity associated with the CPA-laser operation. In the space of the system parameters, the transition through each self-dual spectral singularity corresponds to a bifurcation of a pair of complex-conjugate propagation constants from the continuum. The bifurcation of a first complex-conjugate pair corresponds to the phase transition from purely real to complex spectrum.

Bloch Oscillations in Optical and Zeeman Lattices in the Presence of Spin-Orbit Coupling

We address Bloch oscillations of a spin-orbit coupled atom in periodic potentials of two types: Optical and Zeeman lattices. We show that in optical lattices the spin-orbit coupling allows controlling the direction of atomic motion and may lead to complete suppression of the oscillations at specific values of the coupling strength. In Zeeman lattices the energy bands are found to cross each other at the boundaries of the Brillouin zone, resulting in period-doubling of the oscillations. In all cases, the oscillations are accompanied by rotation of the pseudo-spin, with a dynamics that is determined by the strength of the spin-orbit coupling. The predicted effects are discussed also in terms of a Wannier-Stark ladder, which in optical lattices consist of two mutually-shifted equidistant sub-ladders.

Nonlinear currents in a ring-shaped waveguide with balanced gain and dissipation

We describe linear and nonlinear modes in a ring-shaped waveguide with localized gain and dissipation modeled by two Dirac $δ$ functions located symmetrically. The strengths of the gain and dissipation are equal, i.e., the system obeys the parity-time symmetry. This configuration describes atomic Bose-Einstein condensates with local loading and local elimination of atoms, polaritonic condensates, or optical ring resonators with local pump and absorption. We discuss the linear spectrum of such a system and show if the location of the $δ$ functions is slightly asymmetric, then the system can be driven through a series of exceptional points by the change of the gain-and-loss coefficient. In the nonlinear case, the system admits solutions with spatially constant and periodic densities which are presented in the exact analytical form. These solutions are supported by the current directed from the gain potential towards the absorbing potential. The system also admits currentless solutions. Stability and bifurcations of nonlinear solutions are also described.

Nonlinear waves in $\cal PT$-symmetric systems

Recent progress on nonlinear properties of parity-time ($\cal PT$-) symmetric systems is comprehensively reviewed in this article. $\cal PT$ symmetry started out in non-Hermitian quantum mechanics, where complex potentials obeying $\cal PT$ symmetry could exhibit all-real spectra. This concept later spread out to optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, electronic circuits, and many other physical fields, where a judicious balancing of gain and loss constitutes a $\cal PT$-symmetric system. The natural inclusion of nonlinearity into these $\cal PT$ systems then gave rise to a wide array of new phenomena which have no counterparts in traditional dissipative systems. Examples include the existence of continuous families of nonlinear modes and integrals of motion, stabilization of nonlinear modes above $\cal PT$-symmetry phase transition, symmetry breaking of nonlinear modes, distinctive soliton dynamics, and many others. In this article, nonlinear $\cal PT$-symmetric systems arising from various physical disciplines are presented; nonlinear properties of these systems are thoroughly elucidated; and relevant experimental results are described. In addition, emerging applications of $\cal PT$ symmetry are pointed out.

Oscillatory instabilities of gap solitons in a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate

The paper is devoted to numerical study of stability of nonlinear localized modes ("gap solitons") for the spatially one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (1D GPE) with periodic potential and repulsive interparticle interactions. We use the Evans function approach combined with the exterior algebra formulation in order to detect and describe weak oscillatory instabilities. We show that the simplest ("fundamental") gap solitons in the first and in the second spectral gaps can undergo oscillatory instabilities for certain values of the frequency parameter (i.e., the chemical potential). The number of unstable eigenvalues and the associated instability rates are described. Several stable and unstable more complex (non-fundamental) gap solitons are also discussed. The results obtained from the Evans function approach are independently confirmed using the direct numerical integration of the GPE.

Small-amplitude nonlinear modes under the combined effect of the parabolic potential, nonlocality and ${\cal PT}$ symmetry

We consider nonlinear modes of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a nonlocal nonlinearity and an additional PT-symmetric parabolic potential. We show that there exists a set of continuous families of nonlinear modes and study their linear stability in the limit of small nonlinearity. It is demonstrated that either PT symmetry or the nonlocality can be used to manage the stability of the small-amplitude nonlinear modes. The stability properties are also found to depend on the particular shape of the nonlocal kernel. Additional numerical simulations show that the stability results remain valid not only for the infinitesimally small nonlinear modes, but also for the modes of finite amplitude

Two-dimensional solitons in conservative and parity-time-symmetric triple-core waveguides with cubic-quintic nonlinearity

We analyze a system of three two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled by linear terms and with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) nonlinearity. We consider two versions of the model: conservative and parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric. These models describe triple-core nonlinear optical waveguides, with balanced gain and losses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case. We obtain families of soliton solutions and discuss their stability. The latter study is performed using a linear stability analysis and checked with direct numerical simulations of the evolutional system of equations. Stable solitons are found in the conservative and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric cases. Interactions and collisions between the conservative and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric solitons are briefly investigated, as well.

Bose-Einstein condensates with localized spin-orbit coupling: soliton complexes and spinor dynamics

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling can be introduced in a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) as a gauge potential acting only in a localized spatial domain. Effect of such a SO "defect" can be understood by transforming the system to the integrable vector model. The properties of the SO-BEC change drastically if the SO defect is accompanied by the Zeeman splitting. In such a non-integrable system, the SO defect qualitatively changes the character of soliton interactions and allows for formation of stable nearly scalar soliton complexes with almost all atoms concentrated in only one dark state. These solitons exist only if the number of particles exceeds a threshold value. We also report on the possibility of transmission and reflection of a soliton upon its scattering on the SO defect. Scattering strongly affects the pseudo-spin polarization and can induce pseudo-spin precession. The scattering can also result in almost complete atomic transfer between the dark states.

Families of stationary modes in complex potentials

It is shown that a general class of complex asymmetric potentials of the form $ w^2(x)-iw_x(x)$, where $w(x)$ is a real function, allows for the existence of one-parametric continuous families of the stationary nonlinear modes bifurcating from the linear spectrum and propagating in Kerr media. As an example, we introduce an asymmetric double-hump complex potential and show that it supports continuous families of stable nonlinear modes.

Global existence of solutions to coupled ${\cal PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We study a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, where one equation includes gain and the other one includes losses. Strengths of the gain and the loss are equal, i.e., the resulting system is parity-time (${\cal PT}$) symmetric. The model includes both linear and nonlinear couplings, such that when all nonlinear coefficients are equal, the system represents the ${\cal PT}$-generalization of the Manakov model. In the one-dimensional case, we prove the existence of a global solution to the Cauchy problem in energy space $H^1$, such that the $H^1$-norm of the global solution may grow in time. In the Manakov case, we show analytically that the $L^2$-norm of the global solution is bounded for all times and numerically that the $H^1$-norm is also bounded. In the two-dimensional case, we obtain a constraint on the $L^2$-norm of the initial data that ensures the existence of a global solution in the energy space $H^1$.

Nonlinear modes in a generalized ${\cal PT}$-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We generalize a finite parity-time (${\cal PT}$-) symmetric network of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger type and obtain general results on linear stability of the zero equilibrium, on the nonlinear dynamics of the dimer model, as well as on the existence and stability of large-amplitude stationary nonlinear modes. A result of particular importance and novelty is the classification of all possible stationary modes in the limit of large amplitudes. We also discover a new integrable configuration of a ${\cal PT}$-symmetric dimer.

Stochastic ${\cal PT}$-symmetric coupler

We introduce a stochastic ${\cal PT}$-symmetric coupler, which is based on dual-core waveguides with fluctuating parameters, such that the gain and the losses are exactly balanced in average. We consider different parametric regimes which correspond to the broken and unbroken ${\cal PT}$ symmetry, as well as to the exceptional point of the underlying deterministic system. We demonstrate that in all the cases the statistically averaged intensity of the field grows. This result holds for either linear or nonlinear coupler and is independent on the type of fluctuations.

Stationary modes and integrals of motion in nonlinear lattices with PT-symmetric linear part

We consider finite-dimensional nonlinear systems with linear part described by a parity-time (PT-) symmetric operator. We investigate bifurcations of stationary nonlinear modes from the eigenstates of the linear operator and consider a class of PT-symmetric nonlinearities allowing for existence of the families of nonlinear modes. We pay particular attention to the situations when the underlying linear PT-symmetric operator is characterized by the presence of degenerate eigenvalues or exceptional-point singularity. In each of the cases we construct formal expansions for small-amplitude nonlinear modes. We also report a class of nonlinearities allowing for the system to admit one or several integrals of motion, which turn out to be determined by the pseudo-Hermiticity of the nonlinear operator.

Tunable nonlinear PT-symmetric defect modes with an atomic cell

We propose a scheme of creating a tunable highly nonlinear defect in a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The defect consists of an atomic cell filled in with two isotopes of three-level atoms. The probe-field refractive index of the defect can be made parity-time (PT) symmetric, which is achieved by proper combination of a control field and of Stark shifts induced by a far-off-resonance field. In the PT-symmetric system families of stable nonlinear defect modes can be formed by the probe field.

Nonlinear modes in the harmonic PT-symmetric potential

We study the families of nonlinear modes described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the PT-symmetric harmonic potential $x^2-2iαx$. The found nonlinear modes display a number of interesting features. In particular, we have observed that the modes, bifurcating from the different eigenstates of the underlying linear problem, can actually belong to the same family of nonlinear modes. We also show that by proper adjustment of the coefficient $α$ it is possible to enhance stability of small-amplitude and strongly nonlinear modes comparing to the well-studied case of the real harmonic potential.

Solitons in a medium with linear dissipation and localized gain

We present a variety of dissipative solitons and breathing modes in a medium with localized gain and homogeneous linear dissipation. The system posses a number of unusual properties, like exponentially localized modes in both focusing and defocusing media, the existence of modes in focusing media at negative propagation constant values, the simultaneous existence of stable symmetric and anti-symmetric localized modes when the gain landscape possesses two local maxima, as well as the existence of stable breathing solutions.

Solitons in PT-symmetric nonlinear lattices

Existence of localized modes supported by the PT-symmetric nonlinear lattices is reported. The system considered reveals unusual properties: unlike other typical dissipative systems it possesses families (branches) of solutions, which can be parametrized by the propagation constant; relatively narrow localized modes appear to be stable, even when the conservative nonlinear lattice potential is absent; finally, the system supports stable multipole solutions.
