Formally-Reversible Maps of C^2

An element $g$ of a group is called {\em reversible} if it is conjugate in the group to its inverse. This paper is about reversibles in the group $G$ of formally-invertible pairs of formal power series in two variables, with complex coefficients. The main result is a description of the generic reversible elements of $G$. We list two explicit sequences of reversibles which between them represent all the conjugacy classes of such reversibles. We show that each such element is reversible by some element of finite order, and hence is the product of two elements of finite even order. Those elements that may be reversed by an involution are called {\em strongly reversible}. We also characterise these. We draw some conclusions about generic reversibles in the group of biholomorphic germs in two variables, and about the factorization of formal maps as products of reversibles. Specifically, each product of reversibles reduces to the product of five.

Q-effectiveness for holomorphic subelliptic multipliers

We provide a solution to the effectiveness problem in Kohn's algorithm for generating holomorphic subelliptic multipliers for $(0,q)$ forms for arbitrary $q$. As an application, we obtain subelliptic estimates for $(0,q)$ forms with effectively controlled order $ε>0$ (the Sobolev exponent) for domains given by sums of squares of holomorphic functions (J.J. Kohn called them "special domains"). These domains are of particular interest due to their relation with complex and algebraic geometry. Our methods include triangular resolutions introduced by the authors in their previous work.

Triangular resolutions and effectiveness for holomorphic subelliptic multipliers

A solution to the effectiveness problem in Kohn's algorithm for generating subelliptic multipliers is provided for domains that include those given by sums of squares of holomorphic functions (also including infinite sums). These domains are of particular interest due to their relation with complex and algebraic geometry and in particular, seem to include all previously known cases. Furthermore, combined with a recent result of M. Fassina, our effectiveness method allows establishing effective subelliptic estimates for more general classes of domains. Our main new tool, a triangular resolution, is the construction of subelliptic multipliers decomposable as $Q\circΓ$, where $Γ$ is constructed from pre-multipliers and $Q$ is part of a triangular system. The effectiveness is proved via a sequence of newly proposed procedures, called here meta-procedures, built on top of the Kohn's procedures, where the order of subellipticity can be effectively tracked. Important sources of inspiration are algebraic-geometric techniques by Y.-T. Siu and procedures for triangular systems by D.W. Catlin and J.P. D'Angelo. The proposed procedures are purely algebraic and as such can also be of interest for geometric and computational problems involving Jacobian determinants, such as resolving singularities of holomorphic maps.

Unique jet determination and extension of germs of CR maps into spheres

We provide a new way of simultaneously parametrizing arbitrary local CR maps from real-analytic generic manifolds $M\subset {\mathbb C}^N$ into spheres ${\mathbb S}^{2N'-1}\subset {\mathbb C}^{N'}$ of any dimension. The parametrization is obtained as a composition of universal rational maps with a holomorphic map depending only on $M$. As applications, we obtain rigidity results of different flavours such as unique jet determination and global extension of local CR maps.

Normal form for second order differential equations

We solve the local equivalence problem for second order (smooth or analytic) ordinary differential equations. We do so by presenting a {\em complete convergent normal form} for this class of ODEs. The normal form is optimal in the sense that it is defined up to the automorphism group of the model (flat) ODE $y"=0$. For a generic ODE, we also provide a unique normal form. By doing so, we give a solution to a problem which remained unsolved since the work of Arnold. The method can be immediately applied to important classes of second order ODEs, in particular, the Painlevé equations. As another application of the convergent normal form, we discover distinguished curves associated with a differential equation that we call {\em chains}.

A normal form for 1-infinite type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$. I. Formal Theory

In this paper, we study the real hypersurfaces $M$ in $\mathbb C^2$ at points $p\in M$ of infinite type. The degeneracy of $M$ at $p$ is assumed to be the least possible, namely such that the Levi form vanishes to first order in the CR transversal direction. A new phenomenon, compared to known normal forms in other cases, is the presence of resonances as roots of an universal polynomial in the $7$-jet of the defining function of $M$. The main result is a complete (formal) normal form at points $p$ with no resonances. Remarkably, our normal form at such infinite type points resembles closely the Chern-Moser normal form at Levi-nondegenerate points. For a fixed hypersurface, its normal forms are parametrized by $S^1\times \mathbb R^*$, and as a corollary we find that the automorphisms in the stability group of $M$ at $p$ without resonances are determined by their $1$-jets at $p$. In the last section, as a contrast, we also give examples of hypersurfaces with arbitrarily high resonances that possess families of distinct automorphisms whose jets agree up to the resonant order.

Convergent normal form and canonical connection for hypersurfaces of finite type in $\mathbb C^2$

We study the holomorphic equivalence problem for finite type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$. We discover a geometric condition, which is sufficient for the existence of a natural convergent normal form for a finite type hypersurface. We also provide an explicit construction of such a normal form. As an application, we construct a canonical connection for a large class of finite type hypersurfaces. To the best of our knowledge, this gives the first construction of an invariant connection for Levi-degenerate hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$.

Convergent normal form for real hypersurfaces at generic Levi degeneracy

We construct a complete convergent normal form for a real hypersurface in $\CC{N},\,N\geq 2$ at generic Levi degeneracy. This seems to be the first convergent normal form for a Levi-degenerate hypersurface. In particular, we obtain, in the spirit of the work of Chern and Moser \cite{chern}, distinguished curves in the Levi degeneracy set, that we call \it degenerate chains.

Rigidity of proper holomorphic maps between bounded symmetric domains

Our first main result gives assumptions guaranteeing that proper holomorphic maps between Cartan type I bounded symmetric domains have simple block matrix shape, answering positively a question of Mok. The proof is based on the second main result establishing similar phenomenon for local CR maps between arbitrary boundary components of two bounded symmetric domains of the above type. Since boundary components other than Shilov boundaries are Levi-degenerate, our analysis is based on their $2$-nondegeneracy combining Levi forms with higher order tensors.

Factoring Formal Maps into Reversible or Involutive Factors

An element $g$ of a group is called reversible if it is conjugate in the group to its inverse. An element is an involution if it is equal to its inverse. This paper is about factoring elements as products of reversibles in the group $\mathfrak{G}_n$ of formal maps of $(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$, i.e. formally-invertible $n$-tuples of formal power series in $n$ variables, with complex coefficients. The case $n=1$ was already understood. Each product $F$ of reversibles has linear part $L(F)$ of determinant $\pm1$. The main results are that for $n\ge2$ each map $F$ with det$(L(F))=\pm1$ is the product of $2+3c$ reversibles, and may also be factored as the product of $9+6c$ involutions, where $c$ is the smallest integer $\ge \log_2n$.

Rigidity of CR maps between Shilov boundaries of bounded symmetric domains

Our goal is to establish what seems to be the first rigidity result for CR embeddings between Shilov boundaries of bounded symmetric domains of higher rank. The result states that any such CR embedding is the standard linear embedding up to CR automorphisms. Our basic assumption extends precisely the well-known optimal bound for the rank one case. There are no other restrictions on the ranks, in particular, the difficult case when the target rank is larger than the source rank is also allowed.

Dynamics of multi-resonant biholomorphisms

The goal of this paper is to study the dynamics of holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C^n such that the resonances among the first 1<= r<= n eigenvalues of the differential are generated over N by a finite number of Q-linearly independent multi-indices (and more resonances are allowed for other eigenvalues). We give sharp conditions for the existence of basins of attraction where a Fatou coordinate can be defined. Furthermore, we obtain a generalization of the Leau-Fatou flower theorem, providing a complete description of the dynamics in a full neighborhood of the origin for 1-resonant parabolically attracting holomorphic germs in Poincare'-Dulac normal form.

preprint2011arXiv

Dynamics of one-resonant biholomorphisms

Our first main result is a construction of a simple formal normal form for holomorphic diffeomorphisms in C^n whose differentials have one-dimensional family of resonances in the first m eigenvalues, m <= n (but more resonances are allowed for other eigenvalues). Next, we provide invariants and give conditions for the existence of basins of attraction. Finally, we give applications and examples demonstrating the sharpness of our conditions.

Boundary problem for Levi flat graphs

In an earlier paper the authors provided general conditions on a real codimension 2 submanifold $S\subset C^{n}$, $n\ge 3$, such that there exists a possibly singular Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ bounded by $S$. In this paper we consider the case when $S$ is a graph of a smooth function over the boundary of a bounded strongly convex domain $Ω\subset C^{n-1}\times R$ and show that in this case $M$ is necessarily a graph of a smooth function over $Ω$. In particular, $M$ is non-singular.

Formal and finite order equivalences

We show that two families of germs of real-analytic subsets in $C^{n}$ are formally equivalent if and only if they are equivalent of any finite order. We further apply the same technique to obtain analogous statements for equivalences of real-analytic self-maps and vector fields under conjugations. On the other hand, we provide an example of two sets of germs of smooth curves that are equivalent of any finite order but not formally equivalent.

New normal forms for Levi-nondegenerate hypersurfaces

In this paper we construct a large class of new normal forms for Levi-nondegenerate real hypersurfaces in complex spaces. We adopt a general approach illustrating why these normal forms are natural and which role is played by the celebrated Chern-Moser normal form. The latter appears in our class as the one with the "maximum normalization" in the lowest degree. However, there are other natural normal forms, even with normalization conditions for the terms of the same degree. Some of these forms do not involve the cube of the trace operator and, in that sense, are simplier than the one by Chern-Moser. We have attempted to give a complete and self-contained exposition (including proofs of well-known results about trace decompositions) that should be accessible to graduate students.

preprint2009arXiv

On Levi-flat hypersurfaces with prescribed boundary

We address the problem of existence and uniqueness of a Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ in $C^n$ with prescribed compact boundary $S$ for $n\ge3$. The situation for $n\ge3$ differs sharply from the well studied case $n=2$. We first establish necessary conditions on $S$ at both complex and CR points, needed for the existence of $M$. All CR points have to be nonminimal and all complex points have to be "flat". Then, adding a positivity condition at complex points, which is similar to the ellipticity for $n=2$ and excluding the possibility of $S$ to contain complex $(n-2)$-dimensional submanifolds, we obtain a solution $M$ to the above problem as a projection of a possibly singular Levi-flat hypersurface in $R\times C^n$. It turns out that $S$ has to be a topological sphere with two complex points and with compact CR orbits, also topological spheres, serving as boundaries of the (possibly singular) complex leaves of $M$. There are no more global assumptions on $S$ like being contained in the boundary of a strongly pseudoconvex domain, as it was in case $n=2$. Furthermore, we show in our situation that any other Levi-flat hypersurface with boundary $S$ must coincide with the constructed solution.

Obstructions to embeddability into hyperquadrics and explicit examples

We give series of explicit examples of Levi-nondegenerate real-analytic hypersurfaces in complex spaces that are not transversally holomorphically embeddable into hyperquadrics of any dimension. For this, we construct invariants attached to a given hypersurface that serve as obstructions to embeddability. We further study the embeddability problem for real-analytic submanifolds of higher codimension and answer a question by Forstnerič.

The equivalence and the embedding problems for CR-structures of any codimension

We give a solution to the equivalence and the embedding problems for smooth CR-submanifolds of complex spaces (and, more generally, for abstract CR-manifolds) in terms of complete differential systems in jet bundles satisfied by all CR-equivalences or CR-embeddings respectively (local and global). For the equivalence problem, the manifolds are assumed to be of finite type and finitely nondegenerate. These are higher order generalizations of the corresponding nondegeneracy conditions for the Levi form. It is shown by a simple example that these nondegeneracy conditions cannot be even slightly relaxed to more general known conditions. In particular, for essentially finite hypersurfaces in $\C^2$, such a complete system may not exist in general. For the embedding problem, the source manifold is assumed to be of finite type and the embeddings to be finitely nondegenerate. Situations are given, where the last condition is automatically satisfied by all CR-embeddings.

On the linearization of the automorphism groups of algebraic domains

Let $D$ be a domain in $C^n$ and $G$ a topological group which acts effectively on $D$ by holomorphic automorphisms. In this paper we are interested in projective linearizations of the action of $G$, i.e. a linear representation of $G$ in some $C^{N+1}$ and an equivariant imbedding of $D$ into $¶^N$ with respect to this representation. The domains we discuss here are open connected sets defined by finitely many real polynomial inequalities or connected finite unions of such sets. Assume that the group $G$ acts by birational automorphisms. Our main result is the equivalence of the following conditions: 1) there exists a projective linearization, i.e. a linear representation of $G$ in some $\C^{N+1}$ and a biregular imbedding $i\colon ¶^n \hookrightarrow ¶^N$ such that the restriction $i|_D$ is $G$-equivariant. 2) $G$ is a subgroup of a Lie group $\hat G$ of birational automorphisms of $D$ which extends the action of $G$ and has finitely many connected components; 3) $G$ is a subgroup of a Nash group $\hat G$ of birational automorphisms of $D$ which extends the action of $G$ to a Nash action $\hat G\times D\to D$; 4) $G$ is a subgroup of a Nash group $\hat G$ such that the action $G\times D\to D$ extends to a Nash action $\hat G\times D\to D$; 5) the degree of the automorphism $ϕ_g\colon D\to D$
