Traces for Hilbert Complexes

We study a new notion of trace operators and trace spaces for abstract Hilbert complexes. We introduce trace spaces as quotient spaces/annihilators. We characterize the kernels and images of the related trace operators and discuss duality relationships between trace spaces. We elaborate that many properties of the classical boundary traces associated with the Euclidean de Rham complex on bounded Lipschitz domains are rooted in the general structure of Hilbert complexes. We arrive at abstract trace Hilbert complexes that can be formulated using quotient spaces/annihilators. We show that, if a Hilbert complex admits stable "regular decompositions" with compact lifting operators, then the associated trace Hilbert complex is Fredholm. Incarnations of abstract concepts and results in the concrete case of the de Rham complex in three-dimensional Euclidean space will be discussed throughout.

Low Frequency Asymptotics and Electro-Magneto-Statics for Time-Harmonic Maxwell's Equations in Exterior Weak Lipschitz Domains with Mixed Boundary Conditions

We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a 3D exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet-Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.

On a Class of Degenerate Abstract Parabolic Problems and Applications to Some Eddy Current Models

We present an abstract framework for parabolic type equations which possibly degenerate on certain spatial regions. The degeneracies are such that the equations under investigation may admit a type change ranging from parabolic to elliptic type problems. The approach is an adaptation of the concept of so-called evolutionary equations in Hilbert spaces and is eventually applied to a degenerate eddy current type model. The functional analytic setting requires quite minimal assumptions on the boundary and interface regularity. The degenerate eddy current model is justified as a limit model of non-degenerate hyperbolic models of Maxwell's equations.

Poincare-Friedrichs Type Constants for Operators Involving grad, curl, and div: Theory and Numerical Experiments

We give some theoretical as well as computational results on Laplace and Maxwell constants. Besides the classical de Rham complex we investigate the complex of elasticity and the complex related to the biharmonic equation and general relativity as well using the general functional analytical concept of Hilbert complexes. We consider mixed boundary conditions and bounded Lipschitz domains of arbitrary topology. Our numerical aspects are presented by examples for the de Rham complex in 2D and 3D which not only confirm our theoretical findings but also indicate some interesting conjectures.

The Index of Some Mixed Order Dirac-Type Operators and Generalised Dirichlet-Neumann Tensor Fields

We revisit a construction principle of Fredholm operators using Hilbert complexes of densely defined, closed linear operators and apply this to particular choices of differential operators. The resulting index is then computed with the help of explicitly describing the dimension of the cohomology groups of generalised (`harmonic') Dirichlet and Neumann tensor fields. The main results of this contribution are the computation of the indices of Dirac-type operators associated to the elasticity complex and the newly found biharmonic complex, relevant for the biharmonic equation, elasticity, and for the theory of general relativity. The differential operators are of mixed order and cannot be seen as leading order type with relatively compact perturbation. As a by-product we present a comprehensive description of the underlying generalised Dirichlet-Neumann vector and tensor fields defining the respective cohomology groups, including an explicit construction of bases in terms of topological invariants, which are of both analytical and numerical interest. Though being defined by certain projection mechanisms, we shall present a way of computing these basis functions by solving certain PDEs given in variational form. For all of this we rephrase core arguments in the work of Rainer Picard [1982] applied to the de Rham complex and use them as a blueprint for the more involved cases presented here. In passing, we also provide new vector-analytical estimates of generalised Poincare-Friedrichs type useful for elasticity or the theory of general relativity.

A Posteriori Error Analysis for the Optimal Control of Magneto-Static Fields

This paper is concerned with the analysis and numerical analysis for the optimal control of first-order magneto-static equations. Necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are established through a rigorous Hilbert space approach. Then, on the basis of the optimality system, we prove functional a posteriori error estimators for the optimal control, the optimal state, and the adjoint state. 3D numerical results illustrating the theoretical findings are presented.

Functional A Posteriori Error Equalities for Conforming Mixed Approximations of Elliptic Problems

In this paper we show how to find the exact error (not just an estimate of the error) of a conforming mixed approximation by using the functional type a posteriori error estimates in the spirit of Repin. The error is measured in a mixed norm which takes into account both the primal and dual variables. We derive this result for elliptic partial differential equations of a certain class. We first derive a special version of our main result by using a simplified reaction-diffusion problem to demonstrate the strong connection to the classical functional a posteriori error estimates of Repin. After this we derive the main result in an abstract setting. Our main result states that in order to obtain the exact global error value of a conforming mixed approximation one only needs the problem data and the mixed approximation of the exact solution. There is no need for calculating any auxiliary data. The calculation of the exact error consists of simply calculating two (usually integral) quantities where all the quantities are known after the approximate solution has been obtained by any conforming method. We also show some numerical computations to confirm the results.

Poincare meets Korn via Maxwell: Extending Korn's First Inequality to Incompatible Tensor Fields

For a bounded three-dimensional domain with Lipschitz boundary we extend Korn's first inequality to incompatible tensor fields. For compatible tensor fields our estimate reduces to a non-standard variant of the well known Korn's first inequality. On the other hand, for skew-symmetric tensor fields our new estimate turns to Poincare's inequality. Therefore, our result may be viewed as a natural common generalization of Korn's first and Poincare's inequality. Decisive tools for this unexpected estimate are the classical Korn's first inequality, Helmholtz decompositions for mixed boundary conditions and the Maxwell estimate.

Conforming and Non-Conforming Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for Elliptic Boundary Value Problems in Exterior Domains: Theory and Numerical Tests

This paper is concerned with the derivation of conforming and non-conforming functional a posteriori error estimates for elliptic boundary value problems in exterior domains. These estimates provide computable and guaranteed upper and lower bounds for the difference between the exact and the approximate solution of the respective problem. We extend earlier results for conforming approximations to the non-conforming case, for which the approximate solutions might not belong to the energy space and are just considered to be square integrable. Moreover, we present some numerical tests.

Dev-Div- and DevSym-DevCurl-inequalities for incompatible square tensor fields with mixed boundary conditions

For an n-dimensional bounded domain we derive some inequalities bounding the norm of a square tensor field. Concerning the Div-Dev-inequality the bound is given by the trace-free part and the divergence and the tensor. In the case of the DevSym-Curl-inequality the bound is given by the trace-free and symmetric part and the curl of the tensor. For n=3 the bound is given by the trace-free symmetric part of the tensor and the trace-free part of the curl of the tensor. Some prototype applications are presented in which the new inequalities may be used to derive the coercivity of the models.

On an Extension of Korn's First Inequality to Incompatible Tensor Fields on Domains of Arbitrary Dimensions

For a bounded N-dimensional domain with Lipschitz boundary we extend Korn's first inequality to incompatible tensor fields.

Complete Low Frequency Asymptotics for Time-Harmonic Generalized Maxwell Equations in Nonsmooth Exterior Domains

We continue the study of the operator of generalized Maxwell equations and completely discover the behavior of the solutions of the time-harmonic equations as the frequency tends to zero. Thereby, we identify degenerate operators in terms of special 'polynomially growing' solutions of a corresponding static problem, which must be added to the 'usual' Neumann series in order to describe the low frequency asymptotic adequately.

Estimates for Deviations from Exact Solutions of Maxwell's Initial Boundary Value Problem

In this paper, we consider an initial boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations. For this hyperbolic type problem, we derive guaranteed and computable upper bounds for the difference between the exact solution and any pair of vector fields in the space-time cylinder that belongs to the corresponding admissible energy class. For this purpose, we use a method suggested earlier for the wave equation.

Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for Elliptic Problems in Exterior Domains

This paper is concerned with the derivation of computable and guaranteed upper bounds of the difference between the exact and the approximate solution of an exterior domain boundary value problem for a linear elliptic equation. Our analysis is based upon purely functional argumentation and does not attract specific properties of an approximation method. Therefore, the estimates derived in the paper at hand are applicable to any approximate solution that belongs to the corresponding energy space. Such estimates (also called error majorants of the functional type) have been derived earlier for problems in bounded domains.

Generalized Electro-Magneto Statics in Nonsmooth Exterior Domains

We develop a solution theory for a generalized electro-magneto static Maxwell system in an exterior domain with anisotropic coefficients converging at infinity with a certain rate towards the identity. Our main goal is to treat right hand side data from some polynomially weighted Sobolev spaces and obtain solutions which are up to a finite sum of special generalized spherical harmonics in another appropriately weighted Sobolev space. As a byproduct we prove a generalized spherical harmonics expansion suited for Maxwell equations. In particular, our solution theory will allow us to give meaning to higher powers of a special static solution operator. Finally we show, how this weighted static solution theory can be extended to handle inhomogeneous boundary data as well. This paper is the second one in a series of three papers, which will completely reveal the low frequency behavior of solutions of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.

Hodge-Helmholtz Decompositions of Weighted Sobolev Spaces in Irregular Exterior Domains with Inhomogeneous and Anisotropic Media

We study in detail Hodge-Helmholtz decompositions in non-smooth exterior domains filled with inhomogeneous and anisotropic media. We show decompositions of alternating differential forms belonging to weighted Sobolev spaces into irrotational and solenoidal forms. These decompositions are essential tools, for example, in electro-magnetic theory for exterior domains. In the appendix we translate our results to the classical framework of vector analysis.

Low Frequency Asymptotics for Time-Harmonic Generalized Maxwell Equations in Nonsmooth Exterior Domains

We discuss the radiation problem of total reflection for a time-harmonic generalized Maxwell system in a non-smooth exterior domain with non-smooth inhomogeneous, anisotropic coefficients converging near infinity with a certain rate towards the identity. By means of the limiting absorption principle, a Fredholm alternative holds true and the eigensolutions decay polynomially resp. exponentially at infinity. We prove that the corresponding eigenvalues do not accumulate even at zero. Next, we show the convergence of the time-harmonic solutions to a solution of an electro-magneto static Maxwell system as the frequency tends to zero. Finally we are able to generalize these results easily to the corresponding Maxwell system with inhomogeneous boundary data. This paper is thought of as the first and introductory one in a series of three papers, which will completely discuss the low frequency behavior of the solutions of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.

On the Polynomial and Exponential Decay of Eigen-Forms of Generalized Time-Harmonic Maxwell Problems

We prove polynomial and exponential decay at infinity of eigen-vectors of partial differential operators related to radiation problems for time-harmonic generalized Maxwell systems in an exterior domain with non-smooth inhomogeneous, anisotropic coefficients converging near infinity with a certain rate towards the identity. As a canonical application we show that the corresponding eigen-values do not accumulate in R \ {0} and that by means of Eidus' limiting absorption principle a Fredholm alternative holds true.

Theoretical Considerations on the Computation of Generalized Time-Periodic Waves

We present both, theory and an algorithm for solving time-harmonic wave problems in a general setting. The time-harmonic solutions will be achieved by computing time-periodic solutions of the original wave equations. Thus, an exact controllability technique is proposed to solve the time-dependent wave equations. We discuss a first order Maxwell type system, which will be formulated in the framework of alternating differential forms. This enables us to investigate different kinds of classical wave problems in one fell swoop, such as acoustic, electro-magnetic or elastic wave problems. After a sufficient theory is established, we formulate our exact controllability problem and suggest a least-squares optimization procedure for its solution, which itself is solved in a natural way by a conjugate gradient algorithm operating in the canonical Hilbert space. Therefore, it might be one of the biggest advances of this approach that the proposed conjugate gradient algorithm does not need any preconditioning.
