Numerical Bootstrap in Quantum Mechanics

We study the effectiveness of the numerical bootstrap techniques recently developed in arXiv:2004.10212 for quantum mechanical systems. We find that for a double well potential the bootstrap method correctly captures non-perturbative aspects. Using this technique we then investigate quantum mechanical potentials related by supersymmetry and recover the expected spectra. Finally, we also study the singlet sector of O(N) vector model quantum mechanics, where we find that the bootstrap method yields results which in the large N agree with saddle point analysis.

Path Integral Complexity and Kasner singularities

We explore properties of path integral complexity in field theories on time dependent backgrounds using its dual description in terms of Hartle-Hawking wavefunctions. In particular, we consider boundary theories with time dependent couplings which are dual to Kasner-AdS metrics in the bulk with a time dependent dilaton. We show that holographic path integral complexity decreases as we approach the singularity, consistent with earlier results from holographic complexity conjectures. Furthermore, we find examples where the complexity becomes universal i.e., independent of the Kasner exponents, but the properties of the path integral tensor networks depend sensitively on this data.

Aspects of the S transformation Bootstrap

We review and systematize two (analytic) bootstrap techniques in two-dimensional conformal field theories using the S-modular transformation. The first one gives universal results in asymptotic regimes by relating extreme temperatures. Along with the presentation of known results, we use this technique to also derive asymptotic formulae for the Zamolodchikov recursion coefficients which match previous conjectures from numerics and from Regge asymptotic analysis. The second technique focuses on intermediate temperatures. We use it to sketch a methodology to derive a bound on off-diagonal squared OPE coefficients, as well as to improve existing bounds on the spectrum in case of non-negative diagonal OPE coefficients.

Quantum quench, large N, and symmetry restoration

We globally quench the theory of two dimensional massless fermions (many flavours) with quartic interactions by making the quartic coupling a smooth function of time. Working in a derivative expansion we show that the discrete Z2 symmetry in case of the Gross-Neveu model, and the U(1) symmetry in case of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, are restored during the zero-temperature quench. For the Gross-Neveu model we show that this can be understood as an effective thermalization. The time of symmetry restoration shows scaling with the quench rate. We identify this with the Kibble-Zurek scaling in the problem. In a suitable double scaling limit, the symmetry restoration may be understood in terms of Liouville quantum mechanics.

On KdV characters in large c CFTs

Two-dimensional conformal field theories with just Virasoro symmetry are endowed with integrable structure. We review how to construct the integrable charges in a two-dimensional conformal field theory and how to relate them to the charges of quantum Sinh-Gordon theory when c>25. We then explicitly calculate the single charge characters in the large c limit for all charges and thereby reveal how their degeneracies grow within one module. This, in particular, allows us to approximate the characters in the limit of small chemical potential, which source the respective charges. The latter give us insights into possible transformation properties of the characters. We also comment on the full generalized Gibbs ensemble and approximations to pure states.

Universal features of left-right entanglement entropy

We show the presence of universal features in the entanglement entropy of regularized boundary states for (1+1)-d conformal field theories on a circle when the reduced density matrix is obtained by tracing over right/left-moving modes. We derive a general formula for the left-right entanglement entropy in terms of the central charge and the modular S matrix of the theory. When the state is chosen to be an Ishibashi state, this measure of entanglement is shown to reproduce the spatial entanglement entropy of a (2+1)-d topological quantum field theory. We explicitly evaluate the left-right entanglement entropies for the Ising model, the tricritical Ising model and the su(2)_k WZW model as examples.

Worldsheet matter for electric flux strings

We develop a scheme to make exactly solvable gauge theories whose electric flux lines host (1+1)-dimensional topological phases. We use this exact `decorated-string-net' framework to construct several classes of interesting models. In particular, we construct an exactly solvable model of a quantum spin liquid whose (gapped) elementary excitations form doublets under an internal symmetry, and hence may be regarded as spin-carrying spinons. The model may be formulated, and is solvable, in any number of dimensions, on any bipartite graph. Another example, in any dimension, has $Z_2$ topological order and anyons which are Kramers' doublets of time reversal symmetry. Further, we make exactly solvable models of 3d topological paramagnets.

dS/CFT at uniform energy density and a de Sitter "bluewall"

We describe a class of spacetimes that are asymptotically de Sitter in the Poincare slicing. Assuming that a dS/CFT correspondence exists, we argue that these are gravity duals to a CFT on a circle leading to uniform energy-momentum density, and are equivalent to an analytic continuation of the Euclidean AdS black brane. These are solutions with a complex parameter which then gives a real energy-momentum density. We also discuss a related solution with the parameter continued to a real number, which we refer to as a de Sitter "bluewall". This spacetime has two asymptotic de Sitter universes and Cauchy horizons cloaking timelike singularities. We argue that the Cauchy horizons give rise to a blue-shift instability.

Double Trace Flows and Holographic RG in dS/CFT correspondence

If there is a dS/CFT correspondence, time evolution in the bulk should translate to RG flows in the dual euclidean field theory. Consequently, although the dual field is expected to be non-unitary, its RG flows will carry an imprint of the unitary time evolution in the bulk. In this note we examine the prediction of holographic RG in de Sitter space for the flow of double and triple trace couplings in any proposed dual. We show quite generally that the correct form of the field theory beta functions for the double trace couplings is obtained from holography, provided one identifies the scale of the field theory with (i|T|) where T is the `time' in conformal coordinates. For dS(4), we find that with an appropriate choice of operator normalization, it is possible to have real n-point correlation functions as well as beta functions with real coefficients. This choice leads to an RG flow with an IR fixed point at negative coupling unlike in a unitary theory where the IR fixed point is at positive coupling. The proposed correspondence of Sp(N) vector models with de Sitter Vasiliev gravity provides a specific example of such a phenomenon. For dS(d+1) with even d, however, we find that no choice of operator normalization exists which ensures reality of coefficients of the beta-functions as well as absence of n-dependent phases for various n-point functions, as long as one assumes real coupling constants in the bulk Lagrangian.

Quantum Quench and Double Trace Couplings

We consider quantum quench by a time dependent double trace coupling in a strongly coupled large N field theory which has a gravity dual via the AdS/CFT correspondence. The bulk theory contains a self coupled neutral scalar field coupled to gravity with negative cosmological constant. We study the scalar dynamics in the probe approximation in two backgrounds: AdS soliton and AdS black brane. In either case we find that in equilibrium there is a critical phase transition at a {\em negative} value of the double trace coupling $κ$ below which the scalar condenses. For a slowly varying homogeneous time dependent coupling crossing the critical point, we show that the dynamics in the critical region is dominated by a single mode of the bulk field. This mode satisfies a Landau-Ginsburg equation with a time dependent mass, and leads to Kibble Zurek type scaling behavior. For the AdS soliton the system is non-dissipative and has $z=1$, while for the black brane one has dissipative $z=2$ dynamics. We also discuss the features of a holographic model which would describe the non-equilibrium dynamics around quantum critical points with arbitrary dynamical critical exponent $z$ and correlation length exponent $ν$. These analytical results are supported by direct numerical solutions.

Bi-local Construction of Sp(2N)/dS Higher Spin Correspondence

We derive a collective field theory of the singlet sector of the Sp(2N) sigma model. Interestingly the hamiltonian for the bilocal collective field is the same as that of the O(N) model. However, the large-N saddle points of the two models differ by a sign. This leads to a fluctuation hamiltonian with a negative quadratic term and alternating signs in the nonlinear terms which correctly reproduces the correlation functions of the singlet sector. Assuming the validity of the connection between O(N) collective fields and higher spin fields in AdS, we argue that a natural interpretation of this theory is by a double analytic continuation, leading to the dS/CFT correspondence proposed by Anninos, Hartman and Strominger. The bi-local construction gives a map into the bulk of de Sitter space-time. Its geometric pseudospin-representation provides a framework for quantization and definition of the Hilbert space. We argue that this is consistent with finite N grassmanian constraints, establishing the bi-local representation as a nonperturbative framework for quantization of Higher Spin Gravity in de Sitter space.

Chaos around Holographic Regge Trajectories

Using methods of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, we show analytically that a dynamical system connected to the classical spinning string solution holographically dual to the principal Regge trajectory is non-integrable. The Regge trajectories themselves form an integrable island in the total phase space of the dynamical system. Our argument applies to any gravity background dual to confining field theories and we verify it explicitly in various supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler, Maldacena-Nunez, Witten QCD and the AdS soliton. Having established non-integrability for this general class of supergravity backgrounds, we show explicitly by direct computation of the Poincare sections and the largest Lyapunov exponent, that such strings have chaotic motion.

Quantum Quench Across a Zero Temperature Holographic Superfluid Transition

We study quantum quench in a holographic model of a zero temperature insulator-superfluid transition. The model is a modification of that of arXiv:0911.0962 and involves a self-coupled complex scalar field, Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant, and Maxwell field with one of the spatial directions compact. In a suitable regime of parameters, the scalar field can be treated as a probe field whose backreaction to both the metric and the gauge field can be ignored. We show that when the chemical potential of the dual field theory lies between two critical values, the equilibrium background geometry is a AdS soliton with a constant gauge field, while the complex scalar condenses leading to broken symmetry. We then turn on a time dependent source for the order parameter which interpolates between constant values and crosses the order-disorder critical point. In the critical region adiabaticity breaks down, but for a small rate of change of the source $v$ there is a new small-$v$ expansion in fractional powers of $v$. The resulting critical dynamics is dominated by a zero mode of the bulk field. To lowest order in this small-$v$ expansion, the order parameter satisfies a time dependent Landau-Ginsburg equation which has $z=2$, but non-dissipative. These predictions are verified by explicit numerical solutions of the bulk equations of motion.

Integrability Lost

It is known that classical string dynamics in pure AdS_5\times S^5 is integrable and plays an important role in solvability. This is a deep and central issue in holography. Here we investigate similar classical integrability for a more realistic confining background and provide a negative answer. The dynamics of a class of simple string configurations in AdS soliton background can be mapped to the dynamics of a set of non-linearly coupled oscillators. In a suitable limit of small fluctuations we discuss a quasi-periodic analytic solution of the system. However numerics indicates chaotic behavior as the fluctuations are not small. Integrability implies the existence of a regular foliation of the phase space by invariant manifolds. Our numerics shows how this nice foliation structure is eventually lost due to chaotic motion. We also verify a positive Lyapunov index for chaotic orbits. Our dynamics is roughly similar to other known non-integrable coupled oscillators systems like Henon-Heiles equations.

Geometric Entropy

The laws of mechanics of stationary black holes bear a close resemblance with the laws of thermodynamics. This is not only a mathematical analogy but also a physical one that helps us answer deep questions related to the thermodynamic properties of the black holes. It turns out that we can define an entropy which is purely geometrical for black holes. In this thesis we explain Wald's formulation which identifies black hole entropy for an arbitrary covariant theory of gravity. We would like to know precisely what inputs go into arriving at Wald's formalism. This expression for the entropy clearly depends on the precise form of the action. The secondary theme of this thesis is to distinguish thermodynamic laws which are kinematic from those which are dynamical. We would like to see explicitly in the derivation of these laws, where exactly the form of action plays a role. In the beginning we motivate the definition of entropy using the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. We encounter the Zeroth law, the Hawking radiation, the second law, and then Wald's formulation.
