Representing topological full groups in Steinberg algebras and C*-algebras

We study the natural representation of the topological full group of an ample Hausdorff groupoid in the groupoid's complex Steinberg algebra and in its full and reduced C*-algebras. We characterise precisely when this representation is injective and show that it is rarely surjective. We then restrict our attention to discrete groupoids, which provide unexpected insight into the behaviour of the representation of the topological full group in the full and reduced groupoid C*-algebras. We show that the image of the representation is not dense in the full groupoid C*-algebra unless the groupoid is a group, and we provide an example showing that the image of the representation may still be dense in the reduced groupoid C*-algebra even when the groupoid is not a group.

Affine Actions and the Yang-Baxter Equation

In this paper, the relations between the Yang-Baxter equation and affine actions are explored in detail. In particular, we classify solutions of the Yang-Baxter equations in two ways: (i) by their associated affine actions of their structure groups on their derived structure groups, and (ii) by the C*-dynamical systems obtained from their associated affine actions. On the way to our main results, several other useful results are also obtained.

Cartan Subalgebras of Topological Graph Algebras and k-Graph C*-algebras

In this paper, two sufficient and necessary conditions are given. The first one characterizes when the boundary path groupoid of a topological graph without singular vertices has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle, and the second one characterizes when the path groupoid of a row-finite k-graph without sources has closed interior of its isotropy group bundle. It follows that the associated topological graph algebra and the associated k-graph C*-algebra have Cartan subalgebras due to a result of Brown-Nagy-Reznikoff-Sims-Williams.

Factoriality and type classification of \textsf{k}-graph von Neumann algebras

Let $\Fth$ be a single vertex \textsf{k}-graph, and $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ be the von Neumann algebra induced from the GNS representation of a distinguished state $ω$ of its $\textsf{k}$-graph C*-algebra $Ø_θ$. In this paper, we prove the factoriality of $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ and further determine its type, when either $\Fth$ has the little pull-back property, or the intrinsic group of $\Fth$ has rank $0$. The key step to achieve this is to show that the fixed point algebra of the modular action corresponding to $ω$ has a unique tracial state.

The interplay between $k$-graphs and the Yang-Baxter equation

In this paper, we initiate the study of the interplay between $k$-graphs and the Yang-Baxter equation. For this, we provide two very different perspectives. One one hand, we show that the set of all set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation is a special class of single-vertex $k$-graphs. As a consequence, we construct an infinite family of large solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation from an arbitrarily given one. On the other hand, we prove that all single-vertex $k$-graphs are YB-semigroups of square-free, involutive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Other various connections are also investigated.

Periodic higher rank graphs revisited

Let $P$ be a finitely generated cancellative abelian monoid. A $P$-graph $Λ$ is a natural generalization of a higher rank graph. A pullback of $Λ$ is constructed by pulling it back over a given monoid morphism to $P$, while a pushout of $Λ$ is obtained by modding out its periodicity $\PerΛ$, which is deduced from a natural equivalence relation on $Λ$. One of our main results in this paper shows that, for a class of higher rank graphs $Λ$, $Λ$ is isomorphic to the pullback of its pushout via a natural quotient map, and that its graph C*-algebra can be embedded into the tensor product of the graph C*-algebra of its pushout and $\ca(\PerΛ)$. As a consequence, its cycline C*-algebra generated by the standard generators with equivalent pairs is an abelian core (particularly a MASA). Along the way, we give an in-depth study on periodicity of $P$-graphs.

A non-self-adjoint Lebesgue decomposition

We study the structure of bounded linear functionals on a class of non-self-adjoint operator algebras that includes the multiplier algebra of every complete Nevanlinna-Pick space, and in particular the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space. Our main result is a Lebesgue decomposition expressing every linear functional as the sum of an absolutely continuous (i.e. weak-* continuous) linear functional, and a singular linear functional that is far from being absolutely continuous. This is a non-self-adjoint analogue of Takesaki's decomposition theorem for linear functionals on von Neumann algebras. We apply our decomposition theorem to prove that the predual of every algebra in this class is (strongly) unique.

Nonself-adjoint 2-graph algebras

We study the structure of weakly-closed nonself-adjoint algebras arising from representations of single vertex 2-graphs. These are the algebras generated by 2 isometric tuples which satisfy a certain commutation relation. We show that these algebras have a lower-triangular $3\times 3$ form. The left-hand side of this matrix decomposition is a slice of the enveloping von Neumann algebra generated by the 2-graph algebra. We further give necessary and sufficient conditions for these algebras themselves to be von Neumann algebras. The paper concludes with further study of atomic representations.

Orthogonally Additive Mappings on Hilbert Modules

In this paper, we study the representation of orthogonally additive mappings acting on Hilbert $C^*$-modules and Hilbert $H^*$-modules. One of our main results shows that every continuous orthogonally additive mapping $f$ from a Hilbert module $W$ over $\K(\H)$ or $\H§(\H)$ to a complex normed space is of the form $f(x)=T(x)+Φ(< x, x >)$ for all $x\in W$, where $T$ is a continuous additive mapping, and $Φ$ is a continuous linear mapping.

The Hopf structure of some dual operator algebras

We study the Hopf structure of a class of dual operator algebras corresponding to certain semigroups. This class of algebras arises in dilation theory, and includes the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra and the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space, which correspond to the free semigroup and the free commutative semigroup respectively. The preduals of the algebras in this class naturally form Hopf (convolution) algebras. The original algebras and their preduals form (non-self-adjoint) dual Hopf algebras in the sense of Effros and Ruan. We study these algebras from this perspective, and obtain a number of results about their structure.

Analytic Free Semigroup Algebras and Hopf Algebras

Let $\fS$ be an analytic free semigroup algebra. In this paper, we explore richer structures of $\fS$ and its predual $\fS_*$. We prove that $\fS$ and $\fS_*$ both are Hopf algebras. Moreover, the structures of $\fS$ and $\fS_*$ are closely connected with each other: There is a bijection between the set of completely bounded representations of $\fS_*$ and the set of corepresentations of $\fS$ on one hand, and $\fS$ can be recovered from the coefficient operators of completely bounded representations of $\fS_*$ on the other hand. As an amusing application of our results, the (Gelfand) spectrum of $\fS_*$ is identified. Surprisingly, the main results of this paper seem new even in the classical case.

Type III von Neumann Algebras associated with $Ø_θ$

Let $\Fth$ be a 2 graph generated by $m$ blue edges and $n$ red edges, and $ω$ be the distinguished faithful state associated with its graph C*-algebra $Ø_θ$. In this paper, we characterize the factorness of the von Neumann algebra $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ induced from the GNS representation of $ω$ under a certain condition. Moreover, when $π_ω(Ø_θ)"$ is a factor, then it is of type III$_{m^{-\frac{1}{b}}}$ (or III$_{n^{-\frac{1}{a}}}$) if $\frac{\ln m}{\ln n}\in\bQ$, where $a,b\in\bN$ with $\gcd(a,b)=1$ satisfy $m^a=n^b$, and of type III$_1$ if $\frac{\ln m}{\ln n}\not\in\bQ$. In the case of $θ$ being the identity permutation, our condition turns out to be redundant. On the way to our main results, we also obtain the structure of the fixed point algebra $Ø_θ^σ$ of the modular action $σ$ from $ω$. This could be useful in proving the redundancy of our extra condition.
