Preheating and gravitational waves in large-field hilltop inflation

The combined Planck, BICEP/Keck Array and BAO measurements of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio from the cosmic microwave background observations severely constrain or completely rule out several models of inflationary potentials. On the other hand, the data seems to favor concave potentials over convex ones. In this paper, we study preheating and gravitational waves after inflation in a large-field, regularized hilltop potential where inflation takes place in the concave plateau. The inflaton, $ϕ$, is coupled to a subdominant scalar field, $χ$, through a quartic coupling. After inflation ends, $ϕ$ oscillates about the potential minimum and becomes inhomogeneous. The growth of the fluctuation modes, $δϕ_k$ and $δχ_k$, in a homogeneous, oscillating background is analyzed in linear perturbation theory, revealing that small modes likely experience broad self-resonance or external parametric resonance. To determine if the resonances are sufficiently strong to cause unstable growth of the modes we perform a lattice simulation. The lattice simulations demonstrate that, although the initial inhomogeneities generate a stochastic gravitational wave background that remains below the present observational limit, the fluctuations do not grow exponentially, and the occupation numbers of $δϕ_k$ and $δχ_k$ remain close to zero.

Precise LHC limits on the $\rm{U}_1$ leptoquark parameter space

A TeV scale leptoquark (LQ) is one of the promising explanations of the recent anomalies in the semileptonic decays of $B$ mesons. Among the various LQs, the vector $\rm{U}_1$ is capable of explaining the anomalies in both $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and $R_{K^{(*)}}$ observables. We use the current LHC data to put bounds on the parameter space of $\rm{U}_1$ relevant for the anomalies. Precise bounds are drawn by recasting the latest $ττ$ and $μμ$ searches by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. We find that it is imperative to include the resonant production modes for obtaining limits in the low mass regions. For higher mass points, the non-resonant production modes play a dominant role.

Sterile neutrinos in $Λ_b^0\to (Λ_c^+,p^+)\ell^-_1\ell^-_2\ell^+_3ν$ decays

We study lepton number violating and lepton number conserving semi-leptonic decays of heavy baryons $Λ_b^0$ to three charged leptons and a neutrino. The decays occur through two intermediate quasi-degenerate GeV-scale sterile neutrinos of either Majorana or Dirac type that can be on-shell. Interference between the intermediate heavy neutrinos leads to CP violation in the final states. Effect of neutrino oscillations between the heavy states are also considered in observables of interests, \emph{i.e.,} branching ratio, and the CP-asymmetry. Given the present constraints on the heavy-to-light mixing elements $|V_{eN}|$ and $|V_{μN}|$, CP-averaged branching ratio of $Λ_b^0\to (Λ_c,p)μμeν$ with intermediate Majorana neutrinos is almost two orders of magnitude larger than for the same with Dirac neutrinos, whereas, CP-averaged branching ratio of $Λ_b^0\to (Λ_c,p)eeμν$ is of the same order of magnitude for both Majorana and Dirac neutrino induced decays. CP-violation is found to be appreciable when the neutrino mass difference is comparable with the average decay widths.

The $Λ_b\toΛ^\ast(1520)(\to N\!\bar{K})\ell^+\ell^-$ decay at low-recoil in HQET

In this paper we discuss the Standard Model and new physics sensitivity of the $Λ_b\toΛ^\ast(1520)(\to N\!\bar{K})\ell^+\ell^-$ decay at low-recoil, where $\ell^\pm$ are massive leptons and $N\!\bar{K}=\{pK^-, n\bar{K}^0 \}$. We provide a full angular distribution with a set of operators that includes the Standard Model operators and their chirality flipped counterparts, and new scalar and pseudo-scalar operators. The resulting angular distribution allows us to construct observables that we study in the Standard Model and in model-independent new physics scenarios. To reduce the hadronic effects emanating from the $Λ_b\toΛ^\ast(1520)$ transition form factors, we exploit the Heavy Quark Effective theory framework valid at low $Λ^\ast(1520)$ recoil, \emph{i.e.,} large dilepton invariant mass squared $q^2\sim \mathcal{O}(m_b^2)$. Working to the leading order in $1/m_b$ and including $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ corrections, we compute the `improved Isgur-Wise relations' between the form factors. The relations correlate the form factors and thereby allow the description of this decay at the low-recoil region with a smaller number of independent form factors.

Optimal renormalization and the extraction of the strange quark mass from moments of the $τ$-decay spectral function

We introduce an optimal renormalization group analysis pertinent to the analysis of polarization functions associated with the $s$-quark mass relevant in $τ$-decay. The technique is based on the renormalization group invariance constraints which lead to closed form summation of all the leading and next-to-leading logarithms at each order in perturbation theory. The new perturbation series exhibits reduced sensitivity to the renormalization scale and improved behavior in the complex plane along the integration contour. Using improved experimental and theory inputs, we have extracted the value of the strange quark mass $m_s(2{\rm GeV}) = 106.70 \pm 9.36~{\rm MeV}$ and $m_s(2{\rm GeV}) = 74.47 \pm 7.77~{\rm MeV}$ from presently available ALEPH and OPAL data respectively. These determinations are in agreement with the determinations in other phenomenological methods and from the lattice.

Precise determination of the low-energy hadronic contribution to the muon $g-2$ from analyticity and unitarity: An improved analysis

The two-pion low-energy contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ\equiv(g-2)_μ/2$, expres sed as an integral over the modulus squared of the pion electromagnetic form fac tor, brings a relatively large contribution to the theoretical error, since the low accuracy of experimental measurements in this region is amplified by the drastic increase of the integration kernel. We derive stringent constraints on the two-pion contribution by exploiting analyticity and unitarity of the pion electromagnetic form factor. To avoid the poor knowledge of the modulus of this function, we use instead its phase, known with high precision in the elastic region from Roy equations for pion-pion scattering via the Fermi-Watson theorem. Above the inelastic threshold we adopt a conservative integral condition on the modulus, determined from data and perturbative QCD. Additional high precision data on the modulus in the range $0.65-0.71$ GeV, obtained from $e^+e^-$ annihilation and $τ$-decay experiments, are used to improve the predictions on the modulus at lower energies by means of a parametrization-free analytic extrapolation. The results are optimal for a given input and do not depend on the unknown phase of the form factor above the inelastic threshold. The present work improves a previous analysis based on the same technique, including more experimental data and employing better statistical tools for their treatment. We obtain for the contribution to $a_μ$ from below 0.63 GeV the value $(133.258 \pm 0.723)\times 10^{-10}$, which amounts to a reduction of the theoretical error by about $6 \times 10^{-11}$.

Towards a unified explanation of $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$, $R_{K}$ and $(g-2)_μ$ anomalies in a left-right model with leptoquarks

We present a unified explanation for the $B$-decay anomalies in $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{K}$ together with the anomalous muon magnetic moment, consistent with the constraints from the current measurements of leptonic decay rates and $D^0-\bar{D}^0$, $B_{s}^0-\bar{B}_{s}^0$ mixings, within the framework of a minimal left-right symmetric gauge theory motivated by one of the low-energy subgroups of $E_{6}$ naturally accommodating leptoquarks.

B->Kπll in and outside the K* window

We study the impact of B->Kpill decays on B->K*(->Kpi)ll, taking into account the K* at finite width. Interference effects can generically be sizable, up to O(10%), but are reduced in several ratios of observables of the angular distribution. Information on strong phases is central to control interference effects, which cannot be removed by sideband subtractions. We point out ways to probe the strong phases; only a single one is required to describe leading effects in the region of low hadronic recoil. We find that recent LHCb data on the B0->K*0mumu angular observables at low recoil are in good agreement with the standard model.

Testing New Physics Effects in $B \to K^*\ell^+\ell^-$

It is generally believed that the decay mode $B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^-$ is one of the best modes to search for physics beyond the standard model. The angular distribution enables the independent measurement of several observables as a function of the dilepton invariant mass. The plethora of observables so obtained enable unique tests of the standard model contributions. We start by writing the most general parametric form of the standard model amplitude for $B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^-$ taking into account comprehensively all contributions within SM. These include all short-distance and long-distance effects, factorizable and non-factorizable contributions, complete electromagnetic corrections to hadronic operators up to all orders, resonance contributions and the finite lepton and quark masses. The parametric form of the amplitude in the standard model results a new relation involving all the $CP$ conserving observables. The derivation of this relation only needs the parametric form of the amplitude and not a detailed calculation of it. Hence, we make no approximations, however, innocuous. The violation of this relation will provide a smoking gun signal of new physics. We use the $1 \text{fb}^{-1}$ LHC$b$ data to explicitly show how our relation can be used to test standard model and search for new physics that might contribute to this decay.

The $\bar B \to \bar K π\ell \ell$ and $\bar B_s \to \bar K K \ell \ell$ distributions at low hadronic recoil

The rare multi-body decays B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll are both important as backgrounds to precision analyses in the benchmark modes B->K* ll and B_s->phi ll as well as sensitive probes of flavor physics in and beyond the standard model. We work out non-resonant contributions to B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll amplitudes, where l=e,mu, at low hadronic recoil in a model-independent way. Using the operator product expansion in 1/m_b, we present expressions for the full angular distribution. The latter allows to probe new combinations of |Delta B|=|Delta S|=1 couplings and gives access to strong phases between non-resonant and resonant contributions. Exact endpoint relations between transversity amplitudes based on Lorentz invariance are obtained. Several phenomenological distributions including those from the angular projections to the S-, P-, D-waves are given. Standard model branching ratios for non-resonant B->K pi ll and B_s->K K ll decays are found to be in the few 10^{-8} region, but drop significantly if cuts around the K* or phi mass are employed. Nevertheless, the non-resonant contributions to B->K pi ll provide the dominant background in the B->K* ll signal region with respect to the low mass scalars. In B_s->K K ll, the narrowness of the phi allows for more efficient background control. We briefly discuss lepton-flavor non-universal effects, also in view of the recent data on R_K.

Two-pion low-energy contribution to the muon $g-2$ with improved precision from analyticity and unitarity

The two-pion contribution from low energies to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, although small, has a large relative uncertainty since in this region the experimental data on the cross sections are neither sufficient nor precise enough. It is therefore of interest to see whether the precision can be improved by means of additional theoretical information on the pion electromagnetic form factor, which controls the leading order contribution. In the present paper we address this problem by exploiting analyticity and unitarity of the form factor in a parametrization-free approach that uses the phase in the elastic region, known with high precision from the Fermi-Watson theorem and Roy equations for $ππ$ elastic scattering as input. The formalism also includes experimental measurements on the modulus in the region 0.65-0.70 GeV, taken from the most recent $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-$ experiments, and recent measurements of the form factor on the spacelike axis. By combining the results obtained with inputs from CMD2, SND, BABAR and KLOE, we make the predictions $a_μ^{ππ, \LO}\,[2 m_π,\, 0.30 \gev]=(0.553 \pm 0.004) \times 10^{-10}$ and $a_μ^{ππ, \LO}\,[0.30 \gev,\, 0.63 \gev]=(133. 083 \pm 0.837)\times 10^{-10}$. These are consistent with the other recent determinations, and have slightly smaller errors.

Parametrization-free determination of the shape parameters for the pion electromagnetic form factor

Recent data from high statistics experiments that have measured the modulus of the pion electromagnetic form factor from threshold to relatively high energies are used as input in a suitable mathematical framework of analytic continuation to find stringent constraints on the shape parameters of the form factor at $t=0$. The method uses also as input a precise description of the phase of the form factor in the elastic region based on Fermi-Watson theorem and the analysis of the $ππ$ scattering amplitude with dispersive Roy equations, and some information on the spacelike region coming from recent high precision experiments. Our analysis confirms the inconsistencies of several data on the modulus, especially from low energies, with analyticity and the input phase, noted in our earlier work. Using the data on the modulus from energies above $0.65 \,{\rm GeV}$, we obtain, with no specific parametrization, the prediction $<r_π^2 \r angle \in\, (0.42,\,0.44)\,\fmsq $ for the charge radius. The same formalism leads also to very narrow allowed ranges for the higher-order shape parameters at $t=0$, with a strong correlation among them.

Consistency tests of AMPCALCULATOR and chiral amplitudes in SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory: A tutorial based approach

Ampcalculator is a Mathematica based program that was made publicly available some time ago by Unterdorfer and Ecker. It enables the user to compute several processes at one-loop (upto $O(p^4)$) in SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. They include computing matrix elements and form factors for strong and non-leptonic weak processes with at most six external states. It was used to compute some novel processes and was tested against well-known results by the original authors. Here we present the results of several thorough checks of the package. Exhaustive checks performed by the original authors are not publicly available, and hence the present effort. Some new results are obtained from the software especially in the kaon odd-intrinsic parity non-leptonic decay sector involving the coupling $G_{27}$. Another illustrative set of amplitudes at tree level we provide is in the context of $τ$-decays with several mesons including quark mass effects, of use to the BELLE experiment. All eight meson-meson scattering amplitudes have been checked. Kaon-Compton amplitude has been checked and a minor error in published results has been pointed out. This exercise is a tutorial based one, wherein several input and output notebooks are also being made available as ancillary files on the arXiv. Some of the additional notebooks we provide contain explicit expressions that we have used for comparison with established results. The purpose is to encourage users to apply the software to suit their specific needs. An automatic amplitude generator of this type can provide error-free outputs that could be used as inputs for further simplification, and used in varied scenarios such as applications of chiral perturbation theory at finite temperature, density and volume. This can also be used by students as a learning aid in low-energy hadron dynamics.

Isolating New Physics Effects from Hadronic Form Factor Uncertainties in B\to K^* \ell^+\ell^-

The discovery of New Physics, using weak decays of mesons is difficult due to intractable strong interaction effects needed to describe it. We show how the multitude of "related observables" obtained from B\to K^* \ell^+\ell^-, can provide many new "clean tests" of the Standard Model. The hallmark of these tests is that several of them are independent of the unknown form factors required to describe the decay using heavy quark effective theory. We derive a relation between observables that is free of form factors and Wilson coefficients, the violation of which will be an unambiguous signal of New Physics. We also derive other relations between observables and form factors that are independent of Wilson coefficients and enable verification of hadronic estimates. We find that the allowed parameter space for observables is very tightly constrained in Standard Model, thereby providing clean signals of New Physics. The relations derived will provide unambiguous signals of New Physics if it contributes to these decays.

Model independent bounds on the modulus of the pion form factor on the unitarity cut below the $ωπ$ threshold

We calculate upper and lower bounds on the modulus of the pion electro magnetic form factor on the unitarity cut below the $ωπ$ inelastic threshold, using as input the phase in the elastic region known via the Fermi-Watson theorem from the $ππ$ $P$-wave phase shift, and a suitably weighted integral of the modulus squared above the inelastic threshold. The normalization at $t=0$, the pion charge radius and experimental values at spacelike momenta are used as additional input information. The bounds are model independent, in the sense that they do not rely on specific parametrizations and do not require assumptions on the phase of the form factor above the inelastic threshold. The results provide nontrivial consistencychecks on the recent experimental data on the modulus available below the $ωπ$ threshold from $e^+ e^-$ annihilation and $τ$-decay experiments. In particular, at low energies the calculated bounds offer a more precise description of the modulus than the experimental data.

New Physics Effects and Hadronic Form Factor Uncertainties in B -> K^* l^+ l^-

It is well known that New Physics can contribute to weak decays of heavy mesons via virtual processes during its decays. The discovery of New Physics, using such decays is made difficult due to intractable strong interaction effects needed to describe it. Modes such as B -> K^* l^+ l^- offer an advantage as they provide a multitude of observables via angular analysis. We show how the multitude of "related observables" obtained from B -> K^* l^+ l^-, can provide many new "clean tests" of the Standard Model. The hallmark of these tests is that several of them are independent of the unknown universal form factors in heavy quark effective theory. We derive a relation between observables that is free of form factors and Wilson coefficients, the violation of which will be an unambiguous signal of New Physics. We also derive relations between observables and form factors that are independent of Wilson coefficients and enable verification of hadronic estimates. We show how form factor ratios can be measured directly from helicity fraction with out any assumptions what so ever. We find that the allowed parameter space for observables is very tightly constrained in Standard Model, thereby providing clean signals of New Physics. We examine both the large-recoil and low-recoil regions of the K^* meson and point out special features and derive relations between observables valid in the two limits. In the large-recoil regions several of the relations are unaffected by corrections to all orders in α_s. We present yet another new relation involving only observables that would verify the validity of the relations between form-factors assumed in the low-recoil region. The several relations and constraints derived will provide unambiguous signals of New Physics if it contributes to these decays.

Tadpole cancellation in top-quark condensation

We show that quadratic divergences in top-quark condensation are cancelled when the tadpoles cancel. This latter cancellation is naturally implemented as the cancellation among the top-quark, Goldstone and Higgs contributions. We also calculate the bosonic correction terms to Gribov's mass formula for the Higgs boson. These reduce the prediction for M_H from 167 GeV to 132 GeV. The tadpole cancellation condition by itself is an independent condition on the mass of the Higgs boson which, in Gribov's U(1)_Y scenario, yields M_H \approx 117 GeV with large theoretical uncertainty. More generally, we are able to obtain all three masses, M_W, m_t and M_H, in 100 MeV to 10 TeV energy range as a function of the cut-off scale and the gauge couplings only.

Measuring the Magnitude of the Fourth-Generation CKM4 Matrix Element V_{t'b'}

We study the decays of heavy chiral (t', b') quarks in a four-generation extension of the Standard Model. If the difference between the t' and b' masses is smaller than the W mass, as favored by precision electroweak measurements, then the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa favored, on-shell decay t'-->b'W is forbidden. As a result, other t' decays have substantial branching fractions, which are highly sensitive to the magnitude of the diagonal CKM matrix element V_{t'b'}. We show that |V_{t'b'}| can be determined from the ratio of the two-body and three-body t'-decay branching fractions and estimate the precision of such a measurement at the LHC. We discuss the hadronization of a t' for large enough values of |V_{t'b'}|.
