Universal and non-universal text statistics: Clustering coefficient for language identification

In this work we analyze statistical properties of 91 relatively small texts in 7 different languages (Spanish, English, French, German, Turkish, Russian, Icelandic) as well as texts with randomly inserted spaces. Despite the size (around 11260 different words), the well known universal statistical laws -- namely Zipf and Herdan-Heap's laws -- are confirmed, and are in close agreement with results obtained elsewhere. We also construct a word co-occurrence network of each text. While the degree distribution is again universal, we note that the distribution of Clustering Coefficients, which depend strongly on the local structure of networks, can be used to differentiate between languages, as well as to distinguish natural languages from random texts.

Relations between entanglement and purity in non-Markovian dynamics

Knowledge of the relationships among different features of quantumness, like entanglement and state purity, is important from both fundamental and practical viewpoints. Yet, this issue remains little explored in dynamical contexts for open quantum systems. We address this problem by studying the dynamics of entanglement and purity for two-qubit systems using paradigmatic models of radiation-matter interaction, with a qubit being isolated from the environment (spectator configuration). We show the effects of the corresponding local quantum channels on an initial two-qubit pure entangled state in the concurrence-purity diagram and find the conditions which enable dynamical closed formulas of concurrence, used to quantify entanglement, as a function of purity. We finally discuss the usefulness of these relations in assessing entanglement and purity thresholds which allow noisy quantum teleportation. Our results provide new insights about how different properties of composite open quantum systems behave and relate each other during quantum evolutions.

Detailed analysis of the Bi-O pockets problem in $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10}$

The Bi-O pockets problem, namely, the appearance in theoretical ab initio calculations of the electronic band structure of Bi-cuprates of a pocket of states at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) that is attributed to states belonging to the Bi-O plane is an issue that still calls for more study. The Bi-O pockets are in contradiction with experiments. We have investigated the possible reasons for the disagreement. We checked that by using the experimental lattice and internal parameters without any optimization procedure, the Bi-O pockets do not appear at $E_F$ in agreement with experiment. Nevertheless, as pointed out by R. Kouba et al. [{\em Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 60}, 9321 (1999)] optimization is compulsory to a band structure calculation that will describe appropriately the electronic properties. But starting with the experimental parameters a further optimization procedure previous to the actual ab initio calculation leads to the Bi-O pockets. Doping with 25% of Pb they disappear. From the several configurations that we have considered, we found two very simple ways in which the Bi-O pockets disappear without avoiding an optimization procedure previous to the calculation and without including a doping of any kind. In this paper, we report the effect of the slight displacement of the oxygen atom associated to the Sr-plane (O3) in the electronic properties of $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10}$ (Bi-2223) with tetragonal structure ($I4/mmm$) using the Local Density Approximation (LDA). The slight displacement is performed after the system has been optimized. We determined the intervals of the O3 atomic positions for which calculations of the band structures show that the Bi-O bands emerge towards higher energies in agreement with the experimental results, thereby solving the Bi-O pockets problem (continue).

Universal spatial correlations in random spinor fields

We identify universal spatial fluctuations in systems with non trivial spin dynamics. To this end we calculate by exact numerical diagonalization a variety of experimentally relevant correlations between spinor amplitudes, spin polarizations and spin currents both in the bulk and near the boundary of a confined two-dimensional clean electron gas in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and a single magnetic impurity. We support or claim of universality with the excellent agreement between the numerical results and system-independent spatial correlations of a random field defined on both the spatial and spin degrees of freedom. A rigorous identity relating our universal predictions with response functions provides a direct physical interpretation of our results in the framework of linear response theory.
