Breather Solutions to the Cubic Whitham Equation

We are concerned with numerical approximations of breather solutions for the cubic Whitham equation which arises as a water-wave model for interfacial waves. The model combines strong nonlinearity with the non-local character of the water-wave problem. The equation is non-integrable as suggested by the inelastic interaction of solitary waves. As a non local model, it generalizes, in the low frequency limit, the well known modified KdV (mKdV) equation which is a completely-integrable model. The mKdV equation has breather solutions, i.e. periodic in time and localized in space biparametric solutions. It was recently shown that these breather solutions appear naturally as ground states of invariant integrals, suggesting that such structures may also exist in non-integrable models, at least in an approximate sense. In this work, we present numerical evidence that in the non-integrable case of the cubic Whitham equation, breather solutions may also exist.

Dispersive estimates for full dispersion KP equations

We prove several dispersive estimates for the linear part of the Full Dispersion Kadomtsev-Petviashvili introduced by David Lannes to overcome some shortcomings of the classical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. The proof of these estimates combines the stationary phase method with sharp asymptotics on asymmetric Bessel functions, which may be of independent interest. As a consequence, we prove that the initial value problem associated to the Full Dispersion Kadomtsev-Petviashvili is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$, for $s>\frac74$, in the capillary-gravity setting.

Global well-posedness and scattering for the Dysthe equation in $L^2(\mathbb R^2)$

This paper focuses on the Dysthe equation which is a higher order approximation of the water waves system in the modulation (Schrödinger) regime and in the infinite depth case. We first review the derivation of the Dysthe and related equations. Then we study the initial-value problem. We prove a small data global well-posedness and scattering result in the critical space $L^2(\mathbb R^2)$. This result is sharp in view of the fact that the flow map cannot be $C^3$ continuous below $L^2(\mathbb R^2)$. Our analysis relies on linear and bilinear Strichartz estimates in the context of the Fourier restriction norm method. Moreover, since we are at a critical level, we need to work in the framework of the atomic space $U^2_S$ and its dual $V^2_S $ of square bounded variation functions. We also prove that the initial-value problem is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$, $s>0$. Our results extend to the finite depth version of the Dysthe equation.

On the unique continuation of solutions to non-local non-linear dispersive equations

We prove unique continuation properties of solutions to a large class of nonlinear, non-local dispersive equations. The goal is to show that if $u_1,\,u_2$ are two suitable solutions of the equation defined in $\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$ such that for some non-empty open set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$, $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for $(x,t) \in Ω$, then $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for any $(x,t)\in\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$. The proof is based on static arguments. More precisely, the main ingredient in the proofs will be the unique continuation properties for fractional powers of the Laplacian established by Ghosh, Salo and Ulhmann in \cite{GhSaUh}, and some extensions obtained here.

Full family of flattening solitary waves for the mass critical generalized KdV equation

For the mass critical generalized KdV equation $\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + u^5)=0$ on $\mathbb R$, we construct a full family of flattening solitary wave solutions. Let $Q$ be the unique even positive solution of $Q''+Q^5=Q$. For any $ν\in (0,\frac 13)$, there exist global (for $t\geq 0$) solutions of the equation with the asymptotic behavior \begin{equation*} u(t,x)= t^{-\fracν2} Q\left(t^{-ν} (x-x(t))\right)+w(t,x) \end{equation*} where, for some $c>0$, \begin{equation*} x(t)\sim c t^{1-2ν} \quad \mbox{and}\quad \|w(t)\|_{H^1(x>\frac 12 x(t))} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\to +\infty$.} \end{equation*} Moreover, the initial data for such solutions can be taken arbitrarily close to a solitary wave in the energy space. The long-time flattening of the solitary wave is forced by a slowly decaying tail in the initial data. This result and its proof are inspired and complement recent blow-up results for the critical generalized KdV equation. This article is also motivated by previous constructions of exotic behaviors close to solitons for other nonlinear dispersive equations such as the energy-critical wave equation.

Construction of a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation

We construct a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation (mBO) \[ u_{t}+(u^3-D^1 u)_{x}=0, \] which is a standard mass critical dispersive model. Let $Q\in H^{\frac 12}$, $Q>0$, be the unique ground state solution of $D^1 Q +Q=Q^3$, constructed using variational arguments by Weinstein (Comm. PDE, 12 (1987), J. Diff. Eq., 69 (1987)) and Albert, Bona and Saut (Proc. Royal London Soc., 453 (1997)), and whose uniqueness was recently proved by Frank and Lenzmann (Acta Math., 210 (2013)). We show the existence of a solution $S$ of (mBO) satisfying $\|S \|_{L^2}=\|Q\|_{L^2}$ and \[ S(t)-\frac1{λ^{\frac12}(t)} Q\left(\frac{\cdot - x(t)}{λ(t)}\right)\to 0\quad \mbox{ in }\ H^{\frac 12}(\mathbb R) \mbox{ as }\ t\downarrow 0, \] where \[ λ(t)\sim t,\quad x(t) \sim -|\ln t| \quad \hbox{and}\quad \|S(t)\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \sim t^{-\frac 12}\|Q\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \quad \hbox{as}\ t\downarrow 0. \] This existence result is analogous to the one obtained by Martel, Merle and Raphaël (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 17 (2015)) for the mass critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. However, in contrast with the (gKdV) equation, for which the blow up problem is now well-understood in a neighborhood of the ground state, $S$ is the first example of blow up solution for (mBO). The proof involves the construction of a blow up profile, energy estimates as well as refined localization arguments, developed in the context of Benjamin-Ono type equations by Kenig, Martel and Robbiano (Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, Anal. Non Lin., 28 (2011)). Due to the lack of information on the (mBO) flow around the ground state, the energy estimates have to be considerably sharpened in the present paper.

Asymptotic Stability of high-dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov solitons

We prove that solitons (or solitary waves) of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, a physically relevant high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation appearing in Plasma Physics, and having mixed KdV and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) dynamics, are strongly asymptotically stable in the energy space in the physical region. We also prove that the sum of well-arranged solitons is stable in the same space. Orbital stability of ZK solitons is well-known since the work of de Bouard. Our proofs follow the ideas by Martel and Martel and Merle, applied for generalized KdV equations in one dimension. In particular, we extend to the high dimensional case several monotonicity properties for suitable half-portions of mass and energy; we also prove a new Liouville type property that characterizes ZK solitons, and a key Virial identity for the linear and nonlinear part of the ZK dynamics, obtained independently of the mixed KdV-NLS dynamics. This last Virial identity relies on a simple sign condition, which is numerically tested for the two and three dimensional cases, with no additional spectral assumptions required. Possible extensions to higher dimensions and different nonlinearities could be obtained after a suitable local well-posedness theory in the energy space, and the verification of a corresponding sign condition.

Bilinear Strichartz estimates for the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation and applications

This article is concerned with the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation {equation} \label{ZK0} \partial_tu+\partial_xΔu+u\partial_xu=0 . {equation} We prove that the associated initial value problem is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$ for $s>\frac12$ and globally well-posed in $H^1(\mathbb R\times \mathbb T)$ and in $H^s(\R^3) $ for $ s>1$. Our main new ingredient is a bilinear Strichartz estimate in the context of Bourgain's spaces which allows to control the high-low frequency interactions appearing in the nonlinearity of \eqref{ZK0}. In the $\mathbb R^2$ case, we also need to use a recent result by Carbery, Kenig and Ziesler on sharp Strichartz estimates for homogeneous dispersive operators. Finally, to prove the global well-posedness result in $ \R^3 $, we need to use the atomic spaces introduced by Koch and Tataru.

Well-posedness for the fifth-order KdV equation in the energy space

We prove that the initial value problem (IVP) associated to the fifth order KdV equation {equation} \label{05KdV} \partial_tu-α\partial^5_x u=c_1\partial_xu\partial_x^2u+c_2\partial_x(u\partial_x^2u)+c_3\partial_x(u^3), {equation} where $x \in \mathbb R$, $t \in \mathbb R$, $u=u(x,t)$ is a real-valued function and $α, \ c_1, \ c_2, \ c_3$ are real constants with $α\neq 0$, is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb R)$ for $s \ge 2$. In the Hamiltonian case (\textit i.e. when $c_1=c_2$), the IVP associated to \eqref{05KdV} is then globally well-posed in the energy space $H^2(\mathbb R)$.

Global well-posedness and limit behavior for a higher-order Benjamin-Ono equation

In this paper, we prove that the Cauchy problem associated to the following higher-order Benjamin-Ono equation $$ \partial_tv-b\mathcal{H}\partial^2_xv- aε\partial_x^3v=cv\partial_xv-dε\partial_x(v\mathcal{H}\partial_xv+\mathcal{H}(v\partial_xv)), $$ is globally well-posed in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb R)$. Moreover, we study the limit behavior when the small positive parameter $ε$ tends to zero and show that, under a condition on the coefficients $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$, the solution $v_ε$ to this equation converges to the corresponding solution of the Benjamin-Ono equation.

Well-posednesss of strongly dispersive two-dimensional surface waves Boussinesq systems

We consider in this paper the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to two-dimensional dispersive systems of Boussinesq type which model weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We emphasize the case of the {\it strongly dispersive} ones with focus on the "KdV-KdV" system which possesses the strongest dispersive properties and which is a vector two-dimensional extension of the classical KdV equation.
