Semi-Inducibility of some small graphs

Let $H$ be a fixed graph whose edges are colored red and blue and let $β\in [0,1]$. Let $I(H, β)$ be the (asymptotically normalized) maximum number of copies of $H$ in a large red/blue edge-colored complete graph $G$, where the density of red edges in $G$ is $β$. This refines the problem of determining the semi-inducibility of $H$, which is itself a generalization of the classical question of determining the inducibility of $H$. The function $I(H, β)$ for $β\in [0,1]$ was not known for any graph $H$ on more than three vertices, except when $H$ is a monochromatic clique (Kruskal-Katona) or a monochromatic star (Reiher-Wagner). We obtain sharp results for some four and five vertex graphs, addressing several recent questions posed by various authors. We also obtain some general results for trees and stars. Many open problems remain.

Inducibility of rainbow graphs

Fix $k\ge 11$ and a rainbow $k$-clique $R$. We prove that the inducibility of $R$ is $k!/(k^k-k)$. An extremal construction is a balanced recursive blow-up of $R$. This answers a question posed by Huang, that is a generalization of an old problem of Erd\H os and Sós. It remains open to determine the minimum $k$ for which our result is true. More generally, we prove that there is an absolute constant $C>0$ such that every $k$-vertex connected rainbow graph with minimum degree at least $C\log k$ has inducibility $k!/(k^k-k)$.

Ramsey theory constructions from hypergraph matchings

We give asymptotically optimal constructions in generalized Ramsey theory using results about conflict-free hypergraph matchings. For example, we present an edge-coloring of $K_{n,n}$ with $2n/3 + o(n)$ colors such that each $4$-cycle receives at least three colors on its edges. This answers a question of Axenovich, Füredi and the second author (On generalized Ramsey theory: the bipartite case, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 79 (2000), 66--86). We also exhibit an edge-coloring of $K_n$ with $5n/6+o(n)$ colors that assigns each copy of $K_4$ at least five colors. This gives an alternative very short solution to an old question of Erdős and Gyárfás that was recently answered by Bennett, Cushman, Dudek, and Pralat by analyzing a colored modification of the triangle removal process.

Set-coloring Ramsey numbers via codes

For positive integers $n,r,s$ with $r > s$, the set-coloring Ramsey number $R(n;r,s)$ is the minimum $N$ such that if every edge of the complete graph $K_N$ receives a set of $s$ colors from a palette of $r$ colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on $n$ vertices, that is, a subset of $n$ vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case $s=1$ corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on $R(n;r,s)$ which imply that $R(n;r,s) = 2^{Θ(nr)}$ if $s/r$ is bounded away from $0$ and $1$. The upper bound extends an old result of Erdős and Szemerédi, who treated the case $s = r-1$, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. We also study the analogous problem for hypergraphs.

Hypergraphs with many extremal configurations

For every positive integer $t$ we construct a finite family of triple systems ${\mathcal M}_t$, determine its Turán number, and show that there are $t$ extremal ${\mathcal M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. We also prove a strong stability theorem: every ${\mathcal M}_t$-free triple system whose size is close to the maximum size is a subgraph of one of these $t$ extremal configurations after removing a small proportion of vertices. This is the first stability theorem for a hypergraph problem with an arbitrary (finite) number of extremal configurations. Moreover, the extremal hypergraphs have very different shadow sizes (unlike the case of the famous Turán tetrahedron conjecture). Hence a corollary of our main result is that the boundary of the feasible region of ${\mathcal M}_t$ has exactly $t$ global maxima.

Independent sets in hypergraphs omitting an intersection

A $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices is an $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting system if it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size exactly $\ell$. If in addition it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size greater than $\ell$, then it is an $(n,k,\ell)$-system. Rödl and Šiňajová proved a lower bound for the independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems that is sharp in order of magnitude for fixed $2 \le \ell \le k-1$. We consider the same question for the larger class of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems. For $k\le 2\ell+1$, we believe that the behavior is similar to the case of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems and prove a nontrivial lower bound for the first open case $\ell=k-2$. For $k>2\ell+1$ we give new lower and upper bounds which show that the minimum independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems has a very different behavior than for $(n,k,\ell)$-systems. Our lower bound for $\ell=k-2$ uses some adaptations of the random greedy independent set algorithm, and our upper bounds (constructions) for $k> 2\ell+1$ are obtained from some pseudorandom graphs. We also prove some related results where we forbid more than two edges with a prescribed common intersection size and this leads to some applications in Ramsey theory. For example, we obtain good bounds for the Ramsey number $r_{k}(F^{k},t)$, where $F^{k}$ is the $k$-uniform Fan. Here the behavior is quite different than the case $k=2$ which reduces to the classical graph Ramsey number $r(3,t)$.

A note on the Erdős-Hajnal hypergraph Ramsey problem

We show that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that the following holds. For every $n > 1$, there is a 5-uniform hypergraph on at least $2^{2^{cn^{1/4}}}$ vertices with independence number at most $n$, where every set of 6 vertices induces at most 3 edges. The double exponential growth rate for the number of vertices is sharp. By applying a stepping-up lemma established by the first two authors, analogous sharp results are proved for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. This answers the penultimate open case of a conjecture in Ramsey theory posed by Erdős and Hajnal in 1972.

Cliques with many colors in triple systems

Erdős and Hajnal constructed a 4-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset contains 2 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. Conlon, Fox and Rödl asked whether there is some integer $q\ge 3$ and a $q$-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset has 3 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. We make the first nontrivial progress on this problem by providing a $q$-coloring with this property for all $q\geq 9$, where $N$ is exponential in $n^{2+cq}$ and $c>0$ is an absolute constant.

Extremal problems for hypergraph blowups of trees

In this paper we present a novel approach in extremal set theory which may be viewed as an asymmetric version of Katona's permutation method. We use it to find more Turán numbers of hypergraphs in the Erdős--Ko--Rado range. An $(a,b)$-path $P$ of length $2k-1$ consists of $2k-1$ sets of size $r=a+b$ as follows. Take $k$ pairwise disjoint $a$-element sets $A_0, A_2, \dots, A_{2k-2}$ and other $k$ pairwise disjoint $b$-element sets $B_1, B_3, \dots, B_{2k-1}$ and order them linearly as $A_0, B_1, A_2, B_3, A_4\dots$. Define the (hyper)edges of $P_{2k-1}(a,b)$ as the sets of the form $A_i\cup B_{i+1}$ and $B_j\cup A_{j+1}$. The members of $P$ can be represented as $r$-element intervals of the $ak+bk$ element underlying set. Our main result is about hypergraphs that are blowups of trees, and implies that for fixed $k,a,b$, as $n\to \infty$ \[ {\rm ex}_r(n,P_{2k-1}(a,b)) = (k - 1){n \choose r - 1} + o(n^{r - 1}).\] This generalizes the Erdős--Gallai theorem for graphs which is the case of $a=b=1$. We also determine the asymptotics when $a+b$ is even; the remaining cases are still open.

On a generalized Erdős-Rademacher problem

The triangle covering number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that hit all triangles. Given positive integers $s,t$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +t$ edges and triangle covering number $s$, we determine (for large $n$) sharp bounds on the minimum number of triangles in $G$ and also describe the extremal constructions. Similar results are proved for cliques of larger size and color critical graphs. This extends classical work of Rademacher, Erd\H os, and Lovász-Simonovits whose results apply only to $s \le t$. Our results also address two conjectures of Xiao and Katona. We prove one of them and give a counterexample and prove a modified version of the other conjecture.

Partitioning ordered hypergraphs

An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union. Our main result implies that for each $α> k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^α$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $Ω(d\, m^α)$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-graphs of the observation by Erd\H os and Kleitman that every $r$-graph contains an $r$-partite subgraph with a constant proportion of the edges. The restriction $α> k-1$ is sharp. We also present applications of the main result to several extremal problems for ordered hypergraphs.

Polynomial to exponential transition in Ramsey theory

Given $s \ge k\ge 3$, let $h^{(k)}(s)$ be the minimum $t$ such that there exist arbitrarily large $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ whose independence number is at most polylogarithmic in the number of vertices and in which every $s$ vertices span at most $t$ edges. Erd\H os and Hajnal conjectured (1972) that $h^{(k)}(s)$ can be calculated precisely using a recursive formula and Erd\H os offered \$500 for a proof of this. For $k=3$ this has been settled for many values of $s$ including powers of three but it was not known for any $k\geq 4$ and $s\geq k+2$. Here we settle the conjecture for all $s \ge k \ge 4$. We also answer a question of Bhat and Rödl by constructing, for each $k \ge 4$, a quasirandom sequence of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with positive density and upper density at most $k!/(k^k-k)$. This result is sharp.

Random Turán theorem for hypergraph cycles

Given $r$-uniform hypergraphs $G$ and $H$ the Turán number $\rm ex(G, H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. We study the typical value of $\rm ex(G, H)$ when $G=G_{n,p}^{(r)}$, the Erdős-Rényi random $r$-uniform hypergraph, and $H=C_{2\ell}^{(r)}$, the $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $2\ell$. The case of graphs ($r=2$) is a longstanding open problem that has been investigated by many researchers. We determine $\rm ex(G_{n,p}^{(r)}, C_{2\ell}^{(r)})$ up to polylogarithmic factors for all but a small interval of values of $p=p(n)$ whose length decreases as $\ell$ grows. Our main technical contribution is a balanced supersaturation result for linear even cycles which improves upon previous such results by Ferber-Mckinley-Samotij and Balogh-Narayanan-Skokan. The novelty is that the supersaturation result depends on the codegree of some pairs of vertices in the underlying hypergraph. This approach could be used to prove similar results for other hypergraphs $H$.

Tight bounds for Katona's shadow intersection theorem

A fundamental result in extremal set theory is Katona's shadow intersection theorem, which extends the Kruskal-Katona theorem by giving a lower bound on the size of the shadow of an intersecting family of $k$-sets in terms of its size. We improve this classical result and a related result of Ahlswede, Aydinian, and Khachatrian by proving tight bounds for families that can be quite small. For example, when $k=3$ our result is sharp for all families with $n$ points and at least $3n-7$ triples. Katona's theorem was extended by Frankl to families with matching number $s$. We improve Frankl's result by giving tight bounds for large $n$.

Tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs

In this paper, we prove a theorem on tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs, which is asymptotically sharp in infinitely many cases. Our geometric theorem is a common generalization of early results of Hopf and Pannwitz [12], Sutherland [19], Kupitz and Perles [16] for convex geometric graphs, as well as the classical Erdős-Gallai Theorem [6] for graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the first substantial improvement on the Turán problem for tight paths in uniform hypergraphs.

Extremal theory of locally sparse multigraphs

An $(n,s,q)$-graph is an $n$-vertex multigraph where every set of $s$ vertices spans at most $q$ edges. In this paper, we determine the maximum product of the edge multiplicities in $(n,s,q)$-graphs if the congruence class of $q$ modulo ${s\choose 2}$ is in a certain interval of length about $3s/2$. The smallest case that falls outside this range is $(s,q)=(4,15)$, and here the answer is $a^{n^2+o(n^2)}$ where $a$ is transcendental assuming Schanuel's conjecture. This could indicate the difficulty of solving the problem in full generality. Many of our results can be seen as extending work by Bondy-Tuza and Füredi-Kündgen about sums of edge multiplicities to the product setting. We also prove a variety of other extremal results for $(n,s,q)$-graphs, including product-stability theorems. These results are of additional interest because they can be used to enumerate and to prove logical 0-1 laws for $(n,s,q)$-graphs. Our work therefore extends many classical enumerative results in extremal graph theory beginning with the Erdős-Kleitman-Rothschild theorem to multigraphs.

Improved bounds for the Ramsey number of tight cycles versus cliques

The 3-uniform tight cycle $C_s^3$ has vertex set $ Z_s$ and edge set $\{\{i, i+1, i+2\}: i \in Z_s\}$. We prove that for every $s \not\equiv 0$ (mod 3) and $s \ge 16$ or $s \in \{8,11,14\}$ there is a $c_s>0$ such that the 3-uniform hypergraph Ramsey number $$r(C_s^3, K_n^3)< 2^{c_s n \log n}$$ This answers in strong form a question of the author and Rödl who asked for an upper bound of the form $2^{n^{1+ε_s}}$ for each fixed $s \ge 4$, where $ε_s \rightarrow 0$ as $s \rightarrow \infty$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. The result is nearly tight as the lower bound is known to be exponential in $n$.

The Erdős-Hajnal hypergraph Ramsey problem

Given integers $2\le t \le k+1 \le n$, let $g_k(t,n)$ be the minimum $N$ such that every red/blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \ldots, N\}$ yields either a $(k+1)$-set containing $t$ red $k$-subsets, or an $n$-set with all of its $k$-subsets blue. Erdős and Hajnal proved in 1972 that for fixed $2\le t \le k$, there are positive constants $c_1$ and $c_2$ such that $$ 2^{c_1 n} < g_k(t, n) < twr_{t-1} (n^{c_2}),$$ where $twr_{t-1}$ is a tower of 2's of height $t-2$. They conjectured that the tower growth rate in the upper bound is correct. Despite decades of work on closely related and special cases of this problem by many researchers, there have been no improvements of the lower bound for $2<t<k$. Here we settle the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture in almost all cases in a strong form, by determining the correct tower growth rate, and in half of the cases we also determine the correct power of $n$ within the tower. Specifically, we prove that if $2<t<k-1$ and $k - t$ is even, then $$g_k(t, n) = twr_{t-1} (n^{k-t+1 + o(1)}).$$ Similar results are proved for $k - t$ odd.

The structure of large intersecting families

A collection of sets is {\em intersecting} if every two members have nonempty intersection. We describe the structure of intersecting families of $r$-sets of an $n$-set whose size is quite a bit smaller than the maximum ${n-1 \choose r-1}$ given by the Erd\H os-Ko-Rado Theorem. In particular, this extends the Hilton-Milner theorem on nontrivial intersecting families and answers a recent question of Han and Kohayakawa for large $n$. In the case $r=3$ we describe the structure of all intersecting families with more than 10 edges. We also prove a stability result for the Erdos matching problem. Our short proofs are simple applications of the Delta-system method introduced and extensively used by Frankl since 1977.

Variants of the Erdos-Szekeres and Erdos-Hajnal Ramsey problems

Given integers $\ell,n$, the $\ell$th power of the path $P_n$ is the ordered graph $P_n^{\ell}$ with vertex set $v_1<v_2<\cdots < v_n$, and all edges of the form $v_iv_j$ where $|i-j|\le \ell$. The ramsey number $r(P_n^{\ell}, P_n^{\ell})$ is the minimum $N$ such that every 2-coloring of ${[N] \choose 2}$ results in a monochromatic copy of $P_n^{\ell}$. It is well-known that $r(P_n^1, P_n^1)=(n-1)^2+1$. For $\ell>1$, Balko-Cibulka-Král-Kynčl proved that $r(P_n^{\ell}, P_n^{\ell})< c_{\ell}n^{128 \ell}$ and asked for the growth rate for fixed $\ell$. When $\ell=2$, we improve this upper bound by proving $r(P_n^{2}, P_n^{2})< cn^{19.5}$. Using this result, we determine the correct tower growth rate of the $k$-uniform hypergraph ramsey number of a $(k+1)$-clique versus an ordered tight path. Finally, we consider an ordered version of the classical Erd Hos-Hajnal hypergraph ramsey problem, improve the tower height given by the trivial upper bound, and conjecture that this tower height is optimal.

A survey of Turán problems for expansions

The $r$-expansion $G^+$ of a graph $G$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge of $G$ with a vertex subset of size $r-2$ disjoint from $V(G)$ such that distinct edges are enlarged by disjoint subsets. Let $ex_r(n,F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices not containing any copy of the $r$-uniform hypergraph $F$. Many problems in extremal set theory ask for the determination of $ex_r(n,G^+)$ for various graphs $G$. We survey these Turán-type problems, focusing on recent developments.

Discrete metric spaces: structure, enumeration, and $0$-$1$ laws

Fix an integer $r\geq 3$. We consider metric spaces on $n$ points such that the distance between any two points lies in $\{1,..., r\}$. Our main result describes their approximate structure for large $n$. As a consequence, we show that the number of these metric spaces is $\lceil \frac{r+1}{2}\rceil ^{{n\choose 2} + o(n^2)}$. Related results in the continuous setting have recently been proved by Kozma, Meyerovitch, Peled, and Samotij. When $r$ is even, our structural characterization is more precise, and implies that almost all such metric spaces have all distances at least $r/2$. As an easy consequence, when $r$ is even we improve the error term above from $o(n^2)$ to $o(1)$, and also show a labeled first-order $0$-$1$ law in the language $\mathcal{L}_r$, consisting of $r$ binary relations, one for each element of $[r]$. In particular, we show the almost sure theory $T$ is the theory of the Fraïssé limit of the class of all finite simple complete edge-colored graphs with edge colors in $\{r/2,..., r\}$. Our work can be viewed as an extension of a long line of research in extremal combinatorics to the colored setting, as well as an addition to the collection of known structures that admit logical $0$-$1$ laws.

Hamilton cycles in quasirandom hypergraphs

We show that, for a natural notion of quasirandomness in $k$-uniform hypergraphs, any quasirandom $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with constant edge density and minimum vertex degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. We also give a construction to show that a $k$-uniform hypergraph satisfying these conditions need not contain a Hamilton $\ell$-cycle if $k-\ell$ divides $k$. The remaining values of $\ell$ form an interesting open question.

Off-diagonal hypergraph Ramsey numbers

The Ramsey number $r_k(s,n)$ is the minimum $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \ldots, N\}$ contains a red set of size $s$ or a blue set of size $n$, where a set is red (blue) if all of its $k$-subsets are red (blue). A $k$-uniform \emph{tight path} of size $s$, denoted by $P_{s}$, is a set of $s$ vertices $v_1 < \cdots < v_{s}$ in $\mathbb{Z}$, and all $s-k+1$ edges of the form $\{v_j,v_{j+1},\ldots, v_{j + k -1}\}$. Let $r_k(P_s, n)$ be the minimum $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \ldots, N\}$ results in a red $P_{s}$ or a blue set of size $n$. The problem of estimating both $r_k(s,n)$ and $r_k(P_s, n)$ for $k=2$ goes back to the seminal work of Erdos and Szekeres from 1935, while the case $k\ge 3$ was first investigated by Erdos and Rado in 1952. In this paper, we deduce a quantitative relationship between multicolor variants of $r_k(P_s, n)$ and $r_k(n, n)$. This yields several consequences including the following: (1) We determine the correct tower growth rate for both $r_k(s,n)$ and $r_k(P_s, n)$ for $s \ge k+3$. The question of determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(s,n)$ for all $s \ge k+1$ was posed by Erdos and Hajnal in 1972. (2) We show that determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(P_{k+1}, n)$ is equivalent to determining the tower growth rate of $r_k(n,n)$, which is a notorious conjecture of Erdos, Hajnal and Rado from 1965 that remains open. Some related off-diagonal hypergraph Ramsey problems are also explored.

On the size-Ramsey number of hypergraphs

The size-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph $H$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of $H$ yields a monochromatic copy of $G$. Size-Ramsey numbers of graphs have been studied for almost 40 years with particular focus on the case of trees and bounded degree graphs. We initiate the study of size-Ramsey numbers for $k$-uniform hypergraphs. Analogous to the graph case, we consider the size-Ramsey number of cliques, paths, trees, and bounded degree hypergraphs. Our results suggest that size-Ramsey numbers for hypergraphs are extremely difficult to determine, and many open problems remain.

The number of trees in a graph

Let $T$ be a tree with $t$ edges. We show that the number of isomorphic (labeled) copies of $T$ in a graph $G = (V,E)$ of minimum degree at least $t$ is at least \[2|E| \prod_{v \in V} (d(v) - t + 1)^{\frac{(t-1)d(v)}{2|E|}}.\] Consequently, any $n$-vertex graph of average degree $d$ and minimum degree at least $t$ contains at least $$nd(d-t+1)^{t-1}$$ isomorphic (labeled) copies of $T$. This answers a question of Dellamonica et. al. (where the above statement was proved when $T$ is the path with three edges) while extending an old result of Erd\H os and Simonovits.

A Ramsey-type result for geometric l-hypergraphs

Let n \geq l \geq 2 and q \geq 2. We consider the minimum N such that whenever we have N points in the plane in general position and the l-subsets of these points are colored with q colors, there is a subset S of n points all of whose l-subsets have the same color and furthermore S is in convex position. This combines two classical areas of intense study over the last 75 years: the Ramsey problem for hypergraphs and the Erd\H os-Szekeres theorem on convex configurations in the plane. For the special case l = 2, we establish a single exponential bound on the minimum N, such that every complete $N$-vertex geometric graph whose edges are colored with q colors, yields a monochromatic convex geometric graph on n vertices. For fixed l \geq 2 and q \geq 4, our results determine the correct exponential tower growth rate for N as a function of n, similar to the usual hypergraph Ramsey problem, even though we require our monochromatic set to be in convex position. Our results also apply to the case of l=3 and q=2 by using a geometric variation of the stepping up lemma of Erd\H os and Hajnal. This is in contrast to the fact that the upper and lower bounds for the usual 3-uniform hypergraph Ramsey problem for two colors differ by one exponential in the tower.

Coloring sparse hypergraphs

Fix $k \geq 3$, and let $G$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $Δ$. Suppose that for each $l = 2, ..., k-1$, every set of l vertices of G is in at most $Δ^{(k-l)/(k-1)}/f$ edges. Then the chromatic number of $G$ is $O( (Δ/\log f)^{1/(k-1)})$. This extends results of Frieze and the second author and Bennett and Bohman. A similar result is proved for 3-uniform hypergraphs where every vertex lies in few triangles. This generalizes a result of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov, who proved the result for graphs. Our main new technical contribution is a deviation inequality for positive random variables with expectation less than 1. This may be of independent interest and have further applications.

Eigenvalues of Non-Regular Linear-Quasirandom Hypergraphs

Chung, Graham, and Wilson proved that a graph is quasirandom if and only if there is a large gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue. Recently, the authors extended this characterization to k-uniform hypergraphs, but only for the so-called coregular k-uniform hypergraphs. In this paper, we extend this characterization to all k-uniform hypergraphs, not just the coregular ones. Specifically, we prove that if a k-uniform hypergraph satisfies the correct count of a specially defined four-cycle, then there is a gap between its first and second largest eigenvalue.

Perfect Packings in Quasirandom Hypergraphs

Let k >= 2 and F be a linear k-uniform hypergraph with v vertices. We prove that if n is sufficiently large and v|n, then every quasirandom k-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with constant edge density and minimum degree $Ω(n^{k-1})$ admits a perfect F-packing. The case k = 2 follows immediately from the blowup lemma of Komlós, Sárközy, and Szemerédi. We also prove positive results for some nonlinear F but at the same time give counterexamples for rather simple F that are close to being linear. Finally, we address the case when the density tends to zero, and prove (in analogy with the graph case) that sparse quasirandom 3-uniform hypergraphs admit a perfect matching as long as their second largest eigenvalue is sufficiently smaller than the largest eigenvalue.

Sparse hypergraphs with low independence number

Let K_4 denote the complete 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices. Ajtai, Erdős, Komlós, and Szemerédi (1981) asked if there is a function ω(d) tending to infinity such that every 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph N vertices and average degree d has independence number at least ω(d) N/d^{1/2}. We answer this question by constructing a 3-uniform, K_4-free hypergraph with independence number at most 2N/d^{1/2}. We also provide counterexamples to several related conjectures and improve the lower bound of some hypergraph Ramsey numbers.

Spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs

In this paper we consider spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs. We give two general criteria under which such results may be deduced from `strong stability' forms of the corresponding (pure) extremal results. These results hold for the α-spectral radius defined using the α-norm for any α>1; the usual spectrum is the case α=2. Our results imply that any hypergraph Turán problem which has the stability property and whose extremal construction satisfies some rather mild continuity assumptions admits a corresponding spectral result. A particular example is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any 3-uniform hypergraph on n vertices not containing the Fano plane, when n is sufficiently large. Another is to determine the maximum α-spectral radius of any graph on n vertices not containing some fixed colour-critical graph, when n is sufficiently large; this generalizes a theorem of Nikiforov who proved stronger results in the case α=2. We also obtain an α-spectral version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem on t-intersecting k-uniform hypergraphs.

A triangle $T^{(r)}$ in an $r$-uniform hypergraph is a set of $r+1$ edges such that $r$ of them share a common $(r-1)$-set of vertices and the last edge contains the remaining vertex from each of the first $r$ edges. Our main result is that the random greedy triangle-free process on $n$ points terminates in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with independence number $O((n \log n)^{1/r})$. As a consequence, using recent results on independent sets in hypergraphs, the Ramsey number $r(T^{(r)}, K_s^{(r)})$ has order of magnitude $s^r/\log s$. This answers questions posed in~\cite{BFM, KMV} and generalizes the celebrated results of Ajtai-Komlós-Szemerédi~\cite{AKS} and Kim~\cite{K} to hypergraphs.

Turan Problems and Shadows II: Trees

The expansion $G^+$ of a graph $G$ is the 3-uniform hypergraph obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge of $G$ with a vertex disjoint from $V(G)$ such that distinct edges are enlarged by distinct vertices. Let ex$_r(n,F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices not containing any copy of $F$. The authors \cite{KMV} recently determined ex$_3(n,G^+)$ more generally, namely when $G$ is a path or cycle, thus settling conjectures of Füredi-Jiang \cite{FJ} (for cycles) and Füredi-Jiang-Seiver \cite{FJS} (for paths). Here we continue this project by determining the asymptotics for ex$_3(n,G^+)$ when $G$ is any fixed forest. This settles a conjecture of Füredi \cite{Furedi}. Using our methods, we also show that for any graph $G$, either ex$_3(n,G^{+}) \leq \left(\frac{1}{2} + o(1)\right)n^2$ or ex$_3(n,G^{+}) \geq (1 + o(1))n^2,$ thereby exhibiting a jump for the Turán number of expansions.

Turan Problems and Shadows III: expansions of graphs

The expansion $G^+$ of a graph $G$ is the $3$-uniform hypergraph obtained from $G$ by enlarging each edge of $G$ with a new vertex disjoint from $V(G)$ such that distinct edges are enlarged by distinct vertices. Let $ex_3(n,F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices not containing any copy of a $3$-uniform hypergraph $F$. The study of $ex_3(n,G^+)$ includes some well-researched problems, including the case that $F$ consists of $k$ disjoint edges, $G$ is a triangle, $G$ is a path or cycle, and $G$ is a tree. In this paper we initiate a broader study of the behavior of $ex_3(n,G^+)$. Specifically, we show \[ ex_3(n,K_{s,t}^+) = Θ(n^{3 - 3/s})\] whenever $t > (s - 1)!$ and $s \geq 3$. One of the main open problems is to determine for which graphs $G$ the quantity $ex_3(n,G^+)$ is quadratic in $n$. We show that this occurs when $G$ is any bipartite graph with Turán number $o(n^φ)$ where $φ= \frac{1 + \sqrt{5}}{2}$, and in particular, this shows $ex_3(n,Q^+) = Θ(n^2)$ where $Q$ is the three-dimensional cube graph.

Eigenvalues and Linear Quasirandom Hypergraphs

Let p(k) denote the partition function of k. For each k >= 2, we describe a list of p(k)-1 quasirandom properties that a k-uniform hypergraph can have. Our work connects previous notions on linear hypergraph quasirandomness of Kohayakawa-Rödl-Skokan and Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht and the spectral approach of Friedman-Wigderson. For each of the quasirandom properties that are described, we define a largest and second largest eigenvalue. We show that a hypergraph satisfies these quasirandom properties if and only if it has a large spectral gap. This answers a question of Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht. Our work can be viewed as a partial extension to hypergraphs of the seminal spectral results of Chung-Graham-Wilson for graphs.

List Coloring Triangle-Free Hypergraphs

A triangle in a hypergraph is a collection of distinct vertices u,v,w and distinct edges e,f,g with u,v \in e, v,w \in f, w,u \in g, and \{u,v,w\} \cap e \cap f \cap g=\emptyset. The i-degree of a vertex in a hypergraph is the number of edges of size i containing it. We prove that every triangle-free hypergraph of rank three (edges have size two or three) with maximum 3-degree Δ_3 and maximum 2-degree Δ_2 has list chromatic number at most c max{Δ_2/ log{Δ_2}}, (Δ_3 / log{Δ_3})^(1/2)} for some absolute positive constant c. This generalizes a result of Johansson and a result of Frieze and the second author.

Multicolor Ramsey Numbers for Complete Bipartite Versus Complete Graphs

Let H_1, ..., H_k be graphs. The multicolor Ramsey number r(H_1,...,H_k) is the minimum integer r such that in every edge-coloring of K_r by k colors, there is a monochromatic copy of H_i in color i for some 1 <= i <= k. In this paper, we investigate the multicolor Ramsey number $r(K_{2,t},...,K_{2,t},K_m)$, determining the asymptotic behavior up to a polylogarithmic factor for almost all ranges of t and m. Several different constructions are used for the lower bounds, including the random graph and explicit graphs built from finite fields. A technique of Alon and Rödl using the probabilistic method and spectral arguments is employed to supply tight lower bounds. A sample result is $c_1 m^2t/\log^4(mt) \leq r(K_{2,t},K_{2,t},K_m) \leq c_2 m^2t/\log^2 m$ for any t and m, where c_1 and c_2 are absolute constants.

Multicolor Ramsey numbers for triple systems

Given an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, the multicolor Ramsey number $r_k(H)$ is the minimum $n$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^r$ yields a monochromatic copy of $H$. We investigate $r_k(H)$ when $k$ grows and $H$ is fixed. For nontrivial 3-uniform hypergraphs $H$, the function $r_k(H)$ ranges from $\sqrt{6k}(1+o(1))$ to double exponential in $k$. We observe that $r_k(H)$ is polynomial in $k$ when $H$ is $r$-partite and at least single-exponential in $k$ otherwise. Erdős, Hajnal and Rado gave bounds for large cliques $K_s^r$ with $s\ge s_0(r)$, showing its correct exponential tower growth. We give a proof for cliques of all sizes, $s>r$, using a slight modification of the celebrated stepping-up lemma of Erdős and Hajnal. For 3-uniform hypergraphs, we give an infinite family with sub-double-exponential upper bound and show connections between graph and hypergraph Ramsey numbers. Specifically, we prove that $$r_k(K_3)\le r_{4k}(K_4^3-e)\le r_{4k}(K_3)+1,$$ where $K_4^3-e$ is obtained from $K_4^3$ by deleting an edge. We provide some other bounds, including single-exponential bounds for $F_5=\{abe,abd,cde\}$ as well as asymptotic or exact values of $r_k(H)$ when $H$ is the bow $\{abc,ade\}$, kite $\{abc,abd\}$, tight path $\{abc,bcd,cde\}$ or the windmill $\{abc,bde,cef,bce\}$. We also determine many new "small" Ramsey numbers and show their relations to designs. For example, the lower bound for $r_6(kite)=8$ is demonstrated by decomposing the triples of $[7]$ into six partial STS (two of them are Fano planes).

On generalized Ramsey numbers for 3-uniform hypergraphs

The well-known Ramsey number $r(t,u)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every $K_t$-free graph of order $n$ contains an independent set of size $u$. In other words, it contains a subset of $u$ vertices with no $K_2$. Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced a more general problem replacing $K_2$ by $K_s$ for $2\le s<t$. Extending the problem of determining Ramsey numbers they defined the numbers $$ f_{s,t}(n)=\min \big{\{} \max \{|W| : W\subseteq V(G) \text{and} G[W] \text{contains no} K_s\}\big{\}}, $$ where the minimum is taken over all $K_t$-free graphs $G$ of order $n$. In this note, we study an analogous function $f_{s,t}^{(3)}(n)$ for 3-uniform hypergraphs. In particular, we show that there are constants $c_1$ and $c_2$ depending only on $s$ such that $$ c_1(\log n)^{1/4} \left(\frac{\log\log n}{\log\log\log n}\right)^{1/2} < f_{s, s+1}^{(3)}(n) < c_2 \log n. $$

The Poset of Hypergraph Quasirandomness

Chung and Graham began the systematic study of k-uniform hypergraph quasirandom properties soon after the foundational results of Thomason and Chung-Graham-Wilson on quasirandom graphs. One feature that became apparent in the early work on k-uniform hypergraph quasirandomness is that properties that are equivalent for graphs are not equivalent for hypergraphs, and thus hypergraphs enjoy a variety of inequivalent quasirandom properties. In the past two decades, there has been an intensive study of these disparate notions of quasirandomness for hypergraphs, and an open problem that has emerged is to determine the relationship between them. Our main result is to determine the poset of implications between these quasirandom properties. This answers a recent question of Chung and continues a project begun by Chung and Graham in their first paper on hypergraph quasirandomness in the early 1990's.

Turan Problems and Shadows I: Paths and Cycles

A $k$-path is a hypergraph P_k = e_1,e_2,...,e_k such that |e_i \cap e_j| = 1 if |j - i| = 1 and e_i \cap e_j is empty otherwise. A k-cycle is a hypergraph C_k = e_1,e_2,.. ,e_k obtained from a (k-1)-path e_1,e_2,...,e_{k-1} by adding an edge e_k that shares one vertex with e_1, another vertex with e_{k-1} and is disjoint from the other edges. Let ex_r(n,G) be the maximum number of edges in an r-graph with n vertices not containing a given r-graph G. We determine ex_r(n, P_k) and ex_r(n, C_k) exactly for all k \ge 4 and r \ge 3 and $n$ sufficiently large and also characterize the extremal examples. The case k = 3 was settled by Frankl and Füredi. This work is the next step in a long line of research beginning with conjectures of Erd\H os and Sós from the early 1970's. In particular, we extend the work (and settle a recent conjecture) of Füredi, Jiang and Seiver who solved this problem for P_k when r \ge 4 and of Füredi and Jiang who solved it for C_k when r \ge 5. They used the delta system method, while we use a novel approach which involves random sampling from the shadow of an r-graph.

Coloring the cube with rainbow cycles

For every even positive integer $k\ge 4$ let $f(n,k)$ denote the minimim number of colors required to color the edges of the $n$-dimensional cube $Q_n$, so that the edges of every copy of $k$-cycle $C_k$ receive $k$ distinct colors. Faudree, Gyárfás, Lesniak and Schelp proved that $f(n,4)=n$ for $n=4$ or $n>5$. We consider larger $k$ and prove that if $k \equiv 0$ (mod 4), then there are positive constants $c_1, c_2$ depending only on $k$ such that $$c_1n^{k/4} < f(n,k) < c_2 n^{k/4}.$$ Our upper bound uses an old construction of Bose and Chowla of generalized Sidon sets. For $k \equiv 2$ (mod 4), the situation seems more complicated. For the smallest case k=6 we show that $$n \le f(n, 6) < n^{1+o(1)}.$$ The upper bound is obtained from Behrend's construction of a subset of the integers with no three term arithmetic progression.

Let M be a subset of {0, .., n} and F be a family of subsets of an n element set such that the size of A intersection B is in M for every A, B in F. Suppose that l is the maximum number of consecutive integers contained in M and n is sufficiently large. Then we prove that |F| < min {1.622^n 100^l, 2^{n/2+l log^2 n}}. The first bound complements the previous bound of roughly (1.99)^n due to Frankl and the second author which applies even when M={0, 1,.., n} - {n/4}. For small l, the second bound above becomes better than the first bound. In this case, it yields 2^{n/2+o(n)} and this can be viewed as a generalization (in an asymptotic sense) of the famous Eventown theorem of Berlekamp. Our second result complements the result of Frankl-Rodl in a different direction. Fix eps>0 and eps n < t < n/5 and let M={0, 1, .., n)-(t, t+n^{0.525}). Then, in the notation above, we prove that for n sufficiently large, |F| < n{n \choose (n+t)/2}. This is essentially sharp aside from the multiplicative factor of n. The short proof uses the Frankl-Wilson theorem and results about the distribution of prime numbers.

Counting independent sets in triangle-free graphs

Ajtai, Komlós, and Szemerédi proved that for sufficiently large $t$ every triangle-free graph with $n$ vertices and average degree $t$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{n}{100t}\log{t}$. We extend this by proving that the number of independent sets in such a graph is at least \[ 2^{(1/2400)\frac{n}{t}\log^2{t}}. \] This result is sharp for infinitely many $t,n$ apart from the constant. An easy consequence of our result is that there exists $c'>0$ such that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph has at least \[ 2^{c'\sqrt n \log n} \] independent sets. We conjecture that the exponent above can be improved to $\sqrt{n}(\log{n})^{3/2}$. This would be sharp by the celebrated result of Kim which shows that the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$ has order of magnitude $k^2/\log k$.

New lower bounds for the independence number of sparse graphs and hypergraphs

We obtain new lower bounds for the independence number of $K_r$-free graphs and linear $k$-uniform hypergraphs in terms of the degree sequence. This answers some old questions raised by Caro and Tuza \cite{CT91}. Our proof technique is an extension of a method of Caro and Wei \cite{CA79, WE79}, and we also give a new short proof of the main result of \cite{CT91} using this approach. As byproducts, we also obtain some non-trivial identities involving binomial coefficients.

On independent sets in hypergraphs

The independence number of a hypergraph H is the size of a largest set of vertices containing no edge of H. In this paper, we prove new sharp bounds on the independence number of n-vertex (r+1)-uniform hypergraphs in which every r-element set is contained in at most d edges, where 0 < d < n/(log n)^{3r^2}. Our relatively short proof extends a method due to Shearer. We give an application to hypergraph Ramsey numbers involving independent neighborhoods.

The Turán number of $F_{3,3}$

Let $F_{3,3}$ be the 3-graph on 6 vertices, labelled abcxyz, and 10 edges, one of which is abc, and the other 9 of which are all triples that contain 1 vertex from abc and 2 vertices from xyz. We show that for all $n \ge 6$, the maximum number of edges in an $F_{3,3}$-free 3-graph on $n$ vertices is $\binom{n}{3} - \binom{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}{3} - \binom{\lceil n/2 \rceil}{3}$. This sharpens results of Zhou and of the second author and Rödl.

Two-part set systems

The two part Sperner theorem of Katona and Kleitman states that if $X$ is an $n$-element set with partition $X_1 \cup X_2$, and $\cF$ is a family of subsets of $X$ such that no two sets $A, B \in \cF$ satisfy $A \subset B$ (or $B \subset A$) and $A \cap X_i=B \cap X_i$ for some $i$, then $|\cF| \le {n \choose \lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We consider variations of this problem by replacing the Sperner property with the intersection property and considering families that satisfiy various combinations of these properties on one or both parts $X_1$, $X_2$. Along the way, we prove the following new result which may be of independent interest: let $\cF, \cG$ be families of subsets of an $n$-element set such that $\cF$ and $\cG$ are both intersecting and cross-Sperner, meaning that if $A \in \cF$ and $B \in \cG$, then $A \not\subset B$ and $B \not\subset A$. Then $|\cF| +|\cG| < 2^{n-1}$ and there are exponentially many examples showing that this bound is tight.

Almost all triple systems with independent neighborhoods are semi-bipartite

The neighborhood of a pair of vertices $u,v$ in a triple system is the set of vertices $w$ such that $uvw$ is an edge. A triple system $\HH$ is semi-bipartite if its vertex set contains a vertex subset $X$ such that every edge of $\HH$ intersects $X$ in exactly two points. It is easy to see that if $\HH$ is semi-bipartite, then the neighborhood of every pair of vertices in $\HH$ is an independent set. We show a partial converse of this statement by proving that almost all triple systems with vertex sets $[n]$ and independent neighborhoods are semi-bipartite. Our result can be viewed as an extension of the Erd\H os-Kleitman-Rothschild theorem to triple systems. The proof uses the Frankl-Rödl hypergraph regularity lemma, and stability theorems. Similar results have recently been proved for hypergraphs with various other local constraints.

Books vs Triangles

A book of size b in a graph is an edge that lies in b triangles. Consider a graph G with n vertices and \lfloor n^2/4\rfloor +1 edges. Rademacher proved that G contains at least \lfloor n/2\rfloor triangles, and Erdos conjectured and Edwards proved that G contains a book of size at least n/6. We prove the following "linear combination" of these two results. Suppose that α\in (1/2, 1) and the maximum size of a book in G is less than αn/2. Then G contains at least α(1-α) n^2/4 - o(n^2) triangles as n approaches infinity. This is asymptotically sharp. On the other hand, for every α\in (1/3, 1/2), there exists β>0 such that G contains at least βn^3 triangles. It remains an open problem to determine the largest possible βin terms of α. Our proof uses the Ruzsa-Szemeredi theorem.

The de Bruijn-Erdos Theorem for hypergraphs

Fix integers $n \ge r \ge 2$. A clique partition of ${[n] \choose r}$ is a collection of proper subsets $A_1, A_2, ..., A_t \subset [n]$ such that $\bigcup_i{A_i \choose r}$ is a partition of ${[n] \choose r}$. Clique partitions are related to design theory, coding theory, projective geometry, and extremal combinatorics. Let $\cp(n,r)$ denote the minimum size of a clique partition of ${[n] \choose r}$. A classical theorem of de Bruijn and Erd\H os states that $\cp(n, 2) = n$ and also determines the extremal configurations. In this paper we study $\cp(n,r)$, and show in general that for each fixed $r \geq 3$, \[\cp(n,r) \geq (1 + o(1))n^{r/2} \quad \quad {as}n \to \infty.\] We conjecture $\cp(n,r) = (1 + o(1))n^{r/2}$, and prove this conjecture in a very strong sense for $r = 3$ by giving a characterization of optimal clique partitions of ${[n] \choose 3}$ for infinitely many $n$. Precisely, when $n = q^2 + 1$ and $q$ is a prime power, we show \[ \cp(n,3) = n\sqrt{n-1} \] and characterize those clique partitions achieving equality. We also give an absolute lower bound $\cp(n,r) \geq {n \choose r}/{q + r - 1 \choose r}$ when $n = q^2 + q + r - 1$, and for each $r$ characterize the finitely many configurations achieving equality with the lower bound. Finally we note the connection of $\cp(n,r)$ to extremal graph theory, and determine some new asymptotically sharp bounds for the Zarankiewicz problem.

The de Bruijn-Erdos Theorem for Hypergraphs

Fix integers $n \ge r \ge 2$. A clique partition of ${[n] \choose r}$ is a collection of proper subsets $A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_t \subset [n]$ such that $\bigcup_i{A_i \choose r}$ is a partition of ${[n] \choose r}$. Let $\cp(n,r)$ denote the minimum size of a clique partition of ${[n] \choose r}$. A classical theorem of de Bruijn and Erd\H os states that $\cp(n, 2) = n$. In this paper we study $\cp(n,r)$, and show in general that for each fixed $r \geq 3$, \[ \cp(n,r) \geq (1 + o(1))n^{r/2} \quad \quad \mbox{as}n \rightarrow \infty.\] We conjecture $\cp(n,r) = (1 + o(1))n^{r/2}$. This conjecture has already been verified (in a very strong sense) for $r = 3$ by Hartman-Mullin-Stinson. We give further evidence of this conjecture by constructing, for each $r \ge 4$, a family of $(1+o(1))n^{r/2}$ subsets of $[n]$ with the following property: no two $r$-sets of $[n]$ are covered more than once and all but $o(n^r)$ of the $r$-sets of $[n]$ are covered.

Toward a Hajnal-Szemeredi theorem for hypergraphs

Let $H$ be a triple system with maximum degree $d>1$ and let $r>10^7\sqrt{d}\log^{2}d$. Then $H$ has a proper vertex coloring with $r$ colors such that any two color classes differ in size by at most one. The bound on $r$ is sharp in order of magnitude apart from the logarithmic factors. Moreover, such an $r$-coloring can be found via a randomized algorithm whose expected running time is polynomial in the number of vertices of $\cH$. This is the first result in the direction of generalizing the Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem to hypergraphs.
