Birkhoff-James Orthogonality and Its Local Symmetry in Some Sequence Spaces

We study Birkhoff-James orthogonality and its local symmetry in some sequence spaces namely $\ell_p,$ for $1\leq p\leq\infty$, $p\neq2$, $c$, $c_0$ and $c_{00}$. Using the characterization of the local symmetry of Birkhoff-James orthogonality, we characterize isometries of each of these spaces onto itself and obtain the Banach-Lamperti theorem for onto operators on the sequence spaces.

Geometry of nowhere vanishing, point separating sub-algebras of $\mathcal{H}ol(Γ\cup\text{Int}(Γ))$ and zeros of Holomorphic functions

We study $ \mathcal{H}ol(Γ\cup\text{Int}(Γ)) $, the normed algebra of all holomorphic functions defined on some simply connected neighbourhood of a simple closed curve $Γ$ in $\mathbb{C} $, equipped with the supremum norm on $ Γ$. We explore the geometry of nowhere vanishing, point separating sub-algebras of $ \mathcal{H}ol(Γ\cup \text{Int}(Γ)) $. We characterize the extreme points and the exposed points of the unit balls of the said sub-algebras for $Γ$ analytic. We also characterize the smoothness of an element in these sub-algebras by using Birkhoff-James orthogonality techniques without any restriction on $Γ$. As a culmination of our study, we assimilate the geometry of the aforesaid sub-algebras with some classical concepts of complex analysis and establish a connection between Birkhoff-James orthogonality and zeros of holomorphic functions.

On subspaces of $\ell_\infty$ and extreme contraction in $\mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}, \ell_{\infty}^n)$

We investigate different possiblities of subspaces of the space $\ell_{\infty}$ in terms of whether the subspaces are polyhedral or not. We further study finite-dimensional subspaces of $\ell_{\infty}$ which are of the form $\ell_\infty^n$ form some $ n \geq 2.$ As an application of the results we compute the number of extreme contractions for a class of the space of bounded linear operators. In particular we find the number of extreme contractions of $\mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}, \ell_{\infty}^n),$ where $\mathbb{X}$ is a finite-dimensional polyhedral space.

A study of orthogonality of bounded linear operators

We study Birkhoff-James orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality of bounded linear operators between Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. We explore Birkhoff-James orthogonality of bounded linear operators in light of a new notion introduced by us and also discuss some of the possible applications in this regard. We also study isosceles orthogonality of bounded (positive) linear operators on a Hilbert space and some of the related properties, including that of operators having disjoint support. We further explore the relations between Birkhoff-James orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality in a general Banach space.

On numerical radius and Crawford number attainment sets of a bounded linear operator

We completely characterize the Crawford number attainment set and the numerical radius attainment set of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space. We study the intersection properties of the corresponding attainment sets of numerical radius, Crawford number, norm, minimum norm of a bounded linear operator defined on a normed space. Our study illustrates the similarities and the differences of the extremal properties of a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space and a general normed space.

Some remarks on orthogonality of bounded linear operators

We explore the relation between the orthogonality of bounded linear operators in the space of operators and that of elements in the ground space. To be precise, we study if $ T, A \in \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y}) $ satisfy $ T \bot_B A,$ then whether there exists $ x \in \mathbb{X} $ such that $ Tx\bot_B Ax$ with $ \|x\| =1, \|Tx\| = \|T\|$, where $\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y} $ are normed linear spaces. In this context, we introduce the notion of Property $ P_n $ for a Banach space and illustrate its connection with orthogonality of a bounded linear operator between Banach spaces. We further study Property $ P_n $ for various polyhedral Banach spaces.

Birkhoff-James orthogonality of linear operators on finite dimensional Banach spaces

In this paper we characterize Birkhoff-James orthogonality of linear operators defined on a finite dimensional real Banach space $ \mathbb{X}. $ We also explore the symmetry of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of linear operators defined on $ \mathbb{X}. $ Using some of the related results proved in this paper, we finally prove that $ T \in \mathbb{L}(l_{p}^2) (p \geq 2, p \neq \infty) $ is left symmetric with respect to Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if $ T $ is the zero operator. We conjecture that the result holds for any finite dimensional strictly convex and smooth real Banach space $ \mathbb{X}, $ in particular for the Banach spaces $ l_{p}^{n} (p > 1, p \neq \infty). $

On the norm attainment set of a bounded linear operator

In this paper we explore the properties of a bounded linear operator defined on a Banach space, in light of operator norm attainment. Using Birkhoff-James orthogonality techniques, we give a necessary condition for a bounded linear operator attaining norm at a particular point of the unit sphere. We prove a number of corollaries to establish the importance of our study. As part of our exploration, we also obtain a characterization of smooth Banach spaces in terms of operator norm attainment and Birkhoff-James orthogonality. Restricting our attention to $ l_{p}^{2} (p \in \mathbb{N}\setminus \{ 1 \})$ spaces, we obtain an upper bound for the number of points at which any linear operator, which is not a scalar multiple of an isometry, may attain norm.
