Flow field disturbance due to point viscosity variations in a heterogeneous fluid

We derive the flow field disturbance produced by point viscosity variations in a heterogeneous fluid when subject to a background flow while neglecting fluid inertia. The disturbance flow field is found to be identical to that generated by a force-dipole called stresslet. Using a combination of theory and numerical simulations, we show how the hydrodynamics of an active rigid particle is altered due to the presence of point viscosity variations, and how this can be exploited to manipulate and steer them in microfluidic environments.

Review of Dark Matter

In this review of Dark Matter we review dark matter as sterile neutrinos, fermions, with their present and possibly future detection via neutrino Oscillations. We review the creation of Dark Matter via interactions with the Dark Energy (quintesence) field. We also review bosons as dark matter, discussing a proposed search for dark photons. Since photons are vector bosons, if dark photons exist at least part of dark matter are vector bosons. Ongoing experimental detection of Dark Matter is reviewed.

Top Quark Mixed Hybrid Meson and the Quark-Gluon Plasma

Using the method of QCD Sum Rules we estimate the energy of lowest energy top quark meson state with a hybrid admixture. This new estimate uses the previous estimates of hybrid charmonium and upsilon states, but with the mass of the top quark mass being much greater than the charm and bottom quark masses. We discuss production of mixed hybrid top quark mesons and possible detection of the creation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma via Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.

A nonlinear small-deformation theory for transient droplet electrohydrodynamics

The deformation of a viscous liquid droplet suspended in another liquid and subject to an applied electric field is a classic multiphase flow problem best described by the Melcher-Taylor leaky dielectric model. The main assumption of the model is that any net charge in the system is concentrated on the interface between the two liquids as a result of the jump in Ohmic currents from the bulk. Upon application of the field, the drop can either attain a steady prolate or oblate shape with toroidal circulating flows both inside and outside arising from tangential stresses on the interface due to action of the field on the surface charge distribution. Since the pioneering work of \cite{taylor1966}, there have been numerous computational and theoretical studies to predict the deformations measured in experiments. Most existing theoretical models, however, have either neglected transient charge relaxation or nonlinear charge convection by the interfacial flow. In this work, we develop a novel small-deformation theory accurate to second order in electric capillary number ${O}(Ca_E^2)$ for the complete Melcher-Taylor model that includes transient charge relaxation, charge convection by the flow, as well as transient shape deformation. The main result of the paper is the derivation of coupled evolution equations for the induced electric multipoles and for the shape functions describing the deformations on the basis of spherical harmonics. Our results, which are consistent with previous models in the appropriate limits, show excellent agreement with fully nonlinear numerical simulations based on an axisymmetric boundary-element formulation and with existing experimental data in the small-deformation regime.

Review of QCD, Quark-Gluon Plasma, Heavy Quark Hybrids, and Heavy Quark State production in p-p and A-A collisions

This is a review of the Quantum Chromodynamics Cosmological Phase Transitions, the Quark-Gluon Plasma, the production of heavy quark states via p-p collisions and RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions) using the mixed hybrid theory for the $Ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ states; and the possible detection of the Quark-Gluon Plasma via heavy quark production using RHIC. Recent research on fragmentation for the production of D mesons is reviewed, as is future theoretical and experimental research on the Collins and Sivers fragmentation functions for pions produced in polarized p-p collisions.

Emergent vortices in populations of colloidal rollers

Coherent vortical motion has been reported in a wide variety of populations including living organisms (bacteria, fishes, human crowds) and synthetic active matter (shaken grains, mixtures of biopolymers), yet a unified description of the formation and structure of this pattern remains lacking. Here we report the self-organization of motile colloids into a macroscopic steadily rotating vortex. Combining physical experiments and numerical simulations, we elucidate this collective behavior. We demonstrate that the emergent-vortex structure lives on the verge of a phase separation, and single out the very constituents responsible for this state of polar active matter. Building on this observation, we establish a continuum theory and lay out a strong foundation for the description of vortical collective motion in a broad class of motile populations constrained by geometrical boundaries.

Performance and First Physics Results of the ALICE Muon Spectrometer

A precise measurement of the heavy-flavor production cross-sections in pp collisions is an essential baseline for the heavy-ion program. In addition it is a crucial test of pQCD models in the new energy regime at LHC. ALICE measures the muons from the decay of charmonium resonances and from the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavored hadrons in its forward (-4.0 $<$ $η$ $<$ -2.5) Muon Spectrometer. We discuss the status of the detector and present results of data taken in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV.

Quarkonia production at forward rapidity in Pb+Pb collisions at $\bf \sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with the ALICE detector

The study of formation of heavy quarkonia in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides important insight into the properties of the produced high density QCD medium. Lattice QCD studies show sequential suppression of quarkonia states with increasing temperature; which affirms that a full spectroscopy, can provide us a thermometer for the matter produced under extreme conditions in relativistic heavy ion collisions and one of the most direct probes of de-confinement. Muons from the decay of charmonium resonances are detected in ALICE Experiment in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions with a muon spectrometer, covering the forward rapidity region($2.5<y<4$). The analysis of the inclusive J/$ψ$ production in the first Pb+Pb data collected in the fall 2010 at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV is discussed. Preliminary results on the nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) and the central to peripheral nuclear modification factor ($R_{CP}$) are presented.

Opto-Electronics in Large Array Gas Detector Systems

Large array gas detector systems are used in particle and nuclear physics experiments involving high-energy nucleon-nucleon and heavy-ion collisions. We have observed that in large array gas detector systems the momentary discharges inside the detector cells result in slowdown of High Voltage conditioning and possible hindrances in signal processing. We have explored the opto-electronic devices like the opto-coupler, optical fibre and signal processing circuit, which provide successful monitoring procedures and preventive measures to overcome the challenges produced in such complex detector systems.
