A note on the effects of magnetic field on holographic fermions with dipole-like coupling

In this note, we study the effects of non-zero magnetic field on the fermion spectral function coupled with a non-minimal coupling in the background of a dyonic $AdS_4$ black hole. The system can be reduced to a non magnetic one with the momentum being quantized into Landau levels $n$. By tuning the coupling parameter, we study its effect on the Fermi level and the quasiparticle width. We found an interesting scaling relation between the decay width and the coupling parameter, with a universal scaling exponent which is independent of the levels $n$.

Gravitational dark matter: free streaming and phase space distribution

Gravitational dark matter (DM) is the simplest possible scenario that has recently gained interest in the early universe cosmology. In this scenario, DM is assumed to be produced from the decaying inflaton through the gravitational interaction during reheating. Gravitational production from the radiation bath will be ignored as our analysis shows it to be suppressed for a wide range of reheating temperatures. Ignoring any other internal parameters except the DM mass and spin, a particular inflation model such as $α$-attractor, with a specific scalar spectral index $(n_s)$ has been shown to uniquely fix the dark matter mass. For fermion type dark matter we found the mass $m_f$ should be within $(10^4 - 10^{13})$ GeV, and for boson type DM, the mass $m_{s/X}$ turned out to be within $(10^{-8}-10^{13})$ GeV. Interestingly, if the inflaton equation of state $ω_ϕ\rightarrow 1/3$, the DM mass also approaches towards unique value, $m_f \sim 10^{10}$ GeV and $m_{s/X} \sim 10^3\,(\,8\times 10^3\,)$ GeV irrespective of the value of $ω_ϕ$. We further analyzed the phase space distribution $(f_Y)$, and free streaming length $(λ_{fs})$ of these gravitationally produced DM. $f_Y$, which is believed to encode important information about DM, is shown to contain a characteristic primary peak at the initial time where the gravitational production is maximum for both fermion/boson. Apart from this fermionic phase-space distribution function contains an additional peak near the inflaton and fermion mass equality ($m_Y=m_ϕ$) arising for $ω_ϕ>5/9$. Since dark matter is produced during the reheating phase, gravitational instability forming small-scale DM structures during this period will encode those phase space information and be observed at present. Crucial condition $λ_{fs} <λ_{re}$ of forming such a small scale DM structure has been analyzed in detail.

Helical magnetogenesis with reheating phase from higher curvature coupling and baryogenesis

We investigate the generation of helical magnetic fields and address the baryon asymmetry of the universe from an inflationary magnetogenesis scenario, in which the conformal and parity symmetries of the electromagnetic field are broken through its coupling to the Ricci scalar and to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant via the dual field tensor, so that the generated magnetic field can have a helical nature. Depending on the reheating mechanism, we consider two different cases - (1) instantaneous reheating scenario, in which case the reheating e-fold number is zero, and (2) Kamionkowski reheating scenario which is parametrized by a non-zero e-fold number, a reheating equation of state parameter and a given reheating temperature. It is demonstrated that for both the reheating mechanisms, the generated magnetic fields can be compatible with the observations for suitable range of the model parameter present in the non-minimal coupling of the electromagnetic field. Actually the present magnetogenesis model does not produce sufficient hierarchy between the electric and magnetic fields at the end of inflation, and thus the electric field is not able to sufficiently induce (or enhance) the magnetic field during the Kamionkowski reheating stage. This in turn makes both the reheating cases almost similar from the perspective of magnetic field's evolution. Furthermore we find that the magnetic fields at the galactic scale with strength $\sim 10^{-13}\mathrm{G}$ can lead to the resultant value of the ratio of the baryonic number density to the entropy density as large as $\sim 10^{-10}$, which is consistent with the observational data.

Ringing Black Hole is Superradiant: Ultra-light Scalar Field

Superradiance has been studied quite extensively in the context of static (charged) and rotating black hole spacetime. In this paper, we report for the first time that for a minimally coupled scalar field, the absorption cross-section of a Schwarzschild black hole in its ring down phase can be superradiant. Our present result opens up an intriguing possibility of observing the black hole merging phenomena through other fundamental fields.

Study of relativistic accretion flow around KTN black hole with shocks

We present the global solutions of low angular momentum, inviscid, advective accretion flow around Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) black hole in presence and absence of shock waves. These solutions are obtained by solving the governing equations that describe the relativistic accretion flow in KTN spacetime which is characterized by the Kerr parameter ($a_{\rm k}$) and NUT parameter ($n$). During accretion, rotating flow experiences centrifugal barrier that eventually triggers the discontinuous shock transition provided the relativistic shock conditions are satisfied. In reality, the viability of shocked accretion solution appears more generic over the shock free solution as the former possesses high entropy content at the inner edge of the disc. Due to shock compression, the post-shock flow (equivalently post-shock corona, hereafter PSC) becomes hot and dense, and therefore, can produce high energy radiations after reprocessing the soft photons from the pre-shock flow via inverse Comptonization. In general, PSC is characterized by the shock properties, namely shock location ($r_s$), compression ratio ($R$) and shock strength ($S$), and we examine their dependencies on the energy (${\cal E}$) and angular momentum ($λ$) of the flow as well as black hole parameters. We identify the effective domain of the parameter space in $λ-{\cal E}$ plane for shock and observe that shock continues to form for wide range of flow parameters. We also find that $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ act oppositely in determining the shock properties and shock parameter space. Finally, we calculate the disc luminosity ($L$) considering free-free emissions and observe that accretion flows containing shocks are more luminous compared to the shock free solutions.

Studying the holographic Fermi surface in the scalar induced anisotropic background

Holographic properties of a finite density fermion system have been shown to exhibit many interesting behaviours which can be observed in future. In this paper, we study low energy fermion properties in the framework of the holographic Mott-Insulator system. We study the nature of the Fermi surface and its evolution by tuning two types of dipole couplings in the bulk. We further introduce translational symmetry breaking complex scalar field, which is assumed to couple with the holographic fermions. The symmetry breaking background induced by the scalar field is known as Q-lattice. We calculate the fermion spectral function, which captures the low energy behaviour of the system. By tuning the dipole parameters and the non-normalizable component of the scalar field, we observe interesting phenomena such as spectral weight transfer, Fermi surface smearing, which has already been reported in various real condensed matter experiments.

A Minimal Model of Torsion Mediated Dark Matter

We present a minimal model of fermionic dark matter (DM), where a singlet Dirac fermion can interact with the Standard Model (SM) particles via the torsion field of gravitational origin. In general, torsion can be realized as an antisymmetric part of the affine connection associated with the spacetime diffeomorphism symmetry and thus can be thought of as a massive axial vector field. Because of its gravitational origin, the torsion field couples to all the fermion fields including the DM with equal strength, which makes the model quite predictive. The DM is naturally stable without any imposition of ad-hoc symmetry {\it e.g.,} $\mathcal{Z}_2$. Apart from producing the correct thermal abundance, singlet fermion can easily evade the stringent bounds on the spin-independent DM-nucleon direct detection cross-section due to its axial nature. However, in the allowed parameter space, strong bounds can be placed on the torsion mass and its couplings to fermions from the recent LHC searches. Assuming a non universal torsion-DM and torsion-SM coupling, smaller values of torsion masses may become allowed. In both cases we also study the reach of spin-dependent direct detection searches of the DM.

Near horizon symmetries, emergence of Goldstone modes and thermality

For a long time it is believed that black hole horizon are thermal and quantum mechanical in nature. The microscopic origin of this thermality is the main question behind our present investigation, which reveals possible importance of near horizon symmetry. It is this symmetry which is assumed to be spontaneously broken by the background spacetime, generates the associated Goldstone modes. In this paper we construct a suitable classical action for those Goldstone modes, and show that all the momentum modes experience nearly the same inverted harmonic potential, leading to an instability. Thanks to the recent conjectures on the chaos and thermal quantum system, particularly in the context of an inverted harmonic oscillator system. Going into the quantum regime, the system of large number of Goldstone modes with the aforementioned instability is shown to be inherently thermal. Interestingly the temperature of the system also turns out to be proportional to that of the well known horizon temperature. Therefore, we hope our present study can illuminate an intimate connection between the horizon symmetries and the associated Goldstone modes as a possible mechanism of the microscopic origin of the horizon thermality.

Study of relativistic accretion flow in Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime

We study the properties of the relativistic, steady, axisymmetric, low angular momentum, inviscid, advective, geometrically thin accretion flow in a Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime which is characterized by the Kerr parameter ($a_{\rm k}$) and NUT parameter ($n$). Depending on $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ values, KTN spacetime represents either a black or a naked singularity. We solve the governing equations that describe the relativistic accretion flow in KTN spacetime and obtain all possible global transonic accretion solutions around KTN black hole in terms of the energy $({\cal E})$ and angular momentum $(λ)$ of the flow. We identify the region of the parameter space in $λ-{\cal E}$ plane that admits the flow to possess multiple critical points for KTN black hole. We examine the modification of the parameter space due to $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ and find that the role of $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ in determining the parameter space is opposite to each other. This clearly indicates that the NUT parameter $n$ effectively mitigates the effect of black hole rotation in deciding the accretion flow structure. Further, we calculate the maximum disc luminosity ($L_{\rm max}$) corresponding to the accretion solutions around the KTN black hole and for a given set of $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$. In addition, we also investigate all possible flow topologies around the naked singularity and find that there exists a region around the naked singularity which remains inaccessible to the flow. We study the critical point properties for naked singularities and find that the flow possesses maximum of four critical points. Finally, we obtain the parameter space for multiple critical points for naked singularity and find that parameter space is shrunk and shifted to lower $λ$ and higher ${\cal E}$ side as $a_{\rm k}$ is increased which ultimately disappears.

Engineering Holographic Superconductor Phase Diagrams

We study how to engineer holographic models with features of a high temperature superconductor phase diagram. We introduce a field in the bulk which provides a tunable "doping" parameter in the boundary theory. By designing how this field changes the effective masses of other order parameter fields, desired phase diagrams can be engineered. We give examples of generating phase diagrams with phase boundaries similar to a superconducting dome and an anti-ferromagnetic phase by including two order parameter fields. We also explore whether the pseudo gap phase can be described without adding another order parameter field and discuss the potential scaling symmetry associated with a quantum critical point hidden under the superconducting dome in this phase diagram.

Pre-heating in the framework of massive gravity

In this paper we propose a mechanism of natural preheating of our universe by introducing an inflaton field dependent mass term for the gravitational wave for a specific class of massive gravity theory. For any single field inflationary model, the inflaton must go through the oscillatory phase after the end of inflation. As has recently been pointed out, if the gravitational fluctuation has inflaton dependent mass term, there will be a resonant amplification of the amplitude of the gravitational wave during the oscillatory phase of inflaton. Because of this large enhancement of the amplitude of the gravitational wave due to parametric resonance, we show that universe can naturally go through the pre-reheated phase with minimally coupled matter field. Therefore, during the reheating phase, there is no need to introduce any arbitrary coupling between the matter field and the inflaton .

Kinetic gravity braiding and natural inflation in the light of BICEP2 and PLANCK

Based on our previous work, we constructed a phenomenological model of inflation with the higher derivative axion field in the light of recent cosmological expertiments BICEP2 and PLANCK. In order to achieve observed values for the important cosmological parameters $(n_s,r)$ we employ higher derivative kinetic term called kinetic gravity braiding (KGB) for the axion in compatible with the constant shift symmetry. Phenomenologically we choose a particular form of the braiding function $M(ϕ)$ which correctly reproduces the observed value of $(n_s, r)$ based on the recent cosmological observations. Furthermore we also find axion decay constant $f$ and the scale of inflation $Λ$ to be naturally sub-Planckian consistent with the reheating after the end of inflation. Within the sufficient number of e-folding ${\cal N}$, we also find sub-Planckian field excursion for the axion field $Δϕ\simeq f$.

Modified natural inflation: A small single field model with a large tensor to scalar ratio

In this paper we explored in detail a phenomenological model of modified single field natural inflation in light of recent cosmological experiments, BICEP2. Our main goal is to construct an inflationary model which not only predicts the important cosmological quantities such as $(n_s, r)$ compatible with experimental observation, but also is consistent with the low energy effective theory framework. Therefore, all the fundamental scale apart from $M_p$ and quantities of our interest should be within the sub-Planckian region. In order to achieve our goal we modify the usual single field natural inflationary model by a specific form of higher derivative kinetic term called kinetic gravity braiding (KGB). One of our guiding principles to construct such a model is the constant shift symmetry of the axion. We have chosen the form of the KGB term in such a way that it predicts the required value of $n_s\simeq 0.96$ and a large tensor to scalar ratio $r> 0.1$. Importantly for a wide range of parameter space our model has sub-Planckian axion decay constant $f$ and the scale of inflation $Λ$. However, the reheating after the end of inflation limits the value of $f$ so that we are unable to get $f$ to be significantly lower than $M_p$. Furthermore, we find sub-Planckian field excursion for the axion field $Δϕ\simeq f$ for the sufficient number of e-folding ${\cal N} \gtrsim 50 $. We also discussed in detail about the natural preheating mechanism in our model based on the recently proposed Chern-Simon coupling. We found this gravity mediated preheating is very difficult to achieve in our model. With our general analytic argument, we also would like to emphasize that Chern-Simons mediated preheating is very unlikely to happen in any slow roll inflationary model.

Novel Parity Violating Transport Coefficients in 2+1 Dimensions from Holography

We construct a 3+1 dimensional holographic model dual to a parity violating hydrodynamic system in 2+1 dimensions. Our model contains gravitational and electrodynamic Chern-Simons terms coupled to a neutral pseudo scalar $θ$, and a potential composed of quadratic and quartic terms in $θ$. The background is a charged black brane. We study the hydrodynamics to first order in spacetime derivatives near the probe limit of the pseudo scalar, by extracting the transport coefficients from the scalar, vector, and tensor modes of bulk perturbations. We study two mechanisms for breaking the parity of the boundary fluid: the parity is either spontaneously broken by the nonzero vev of the dual pseudo scalar operator, or by the pseudo scalar source on the boundary. The resulting transport coefficients have unusual behaviors compared to those in ordinary materials.

Kinetic Gravity Braiding and axion inflation

We constructed a new class of inflationary model with the higher derivative axion field which obeys constant shift symmetry. In the usual axion (natural) inflation, the axion decay constant is predicted to be in the super-Planckian regime which is believed to be incompatible with an effective field theory framework. With a novel mechanism originating from a higher derivative kinetic gravity braiding (KGB) of an axion field we found that there exist a huge parameter regime in our model where axion decay constant could be naturally sub-Planckian. Thanks to the KGB which effectively reduces the Planck constant. This effectively reduced Planck scale provides us the mechanism of further lowering down the speed of an axion field rolling down its potential without introducing super-Planckian axion decay constant. We also find that with that wide range of parameter values, our model induces almost scale invariant power spectrum as observed in CMB experiments.

A Holographic Model For Hall Viscosity

We have modified the holographic model of Saremi and Son by using a charged black brane, instead of a neutral one, such that when the bulk pseudo scalar potential is made of quadratic and quartic terms, parity can still be broken spontaneously in the boundary theory. In our model, the 3+1 dimensional bulk has a pseudo scalar coupled to the gravitational Chern-Simons term in the anti de Sitter charged black brane back ground. Parity could be broken spontaneously in the bulk by the pseudo scalar hairy solution and give rise to non-zero Hall viscosity at the boundary theory.

Analysing the Effect on CMB in a Parity and Charge Parity Violating Varying Alpha Theory

In this paper we study in detail the effect of our recently proposed model of parity and charge-parity (PCP) violating varying alpha on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photon passing through the intra galaxy-cluster medium (ICM). The ICM is well known to be composed of magnetized plasma. According to our model, the polarization and intensity of the CMB would be affected when traversing through the ICM due to non-trivial scalar photon interactions. We have calculated the evolution of such polarization and intensity collectively, known as the stokes parameters of the CMB photon during its journey through the ICM and tested our results against the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) measurement on Coma galaxy cluster. Our model contains a PCP violating parameter, $β$, and a scale of alpha variation $ω$. Using the derived constrained on the photon-to-scalar conversion probability, ${\bar P}_{γ\rightarrow ϕ}$, for Coma cluster in ref.[34] we found a contour plot in the ($ω,β$) parameter plane. The $β=0$ line in this parameter space corresponds to well-studied Maxwell-dilaton type models which has lower bound on $ω\gtrapprox 6.4 \times 10^{9}$ GeV. In general, as the absolute value of $β$ increases, lower bound on $ω$ also increases. Our model in general predicts the modification of the CMB polarization with a non-trivial dependence on the parity violating coupling parameter $β$. However, it is unconstrained in this particular study. We show that this effect can in principle be detected in the future measurements on CMB polarization such that $β$ can also be constrained.

Semi-realistic Bouncing Domain Wall Cosmology

In this paper we constructed a semi-realistic cosmological model in a dynamic domain wall framework. Our universe is considered to be a (3+1) dimensional dynamic domain wall in a higher dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Born-Infeld background. One of our interesting outcomes from the effective Hubble equation for the domain wall dynamics is that it contains an additional component of "dark matter" which is induced from the charge of the bulk Born-Infeld gauge field. In this background spacetime we have studied the cosmological dynamics of the domain wall. In addition to the Born-Infield gauge field if we consider additional pure gauge field, a non-singular bounce happens at the early stage with a smooth transition between contracting and expanding phase.

The role of higher derivative bulk scalar in stabilizing a warped spacetime

The backreaction on the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime is determined in presence of scalar field in the bulk. A general analysis shows that the stability of such a model can be achieved only if the scalar field action has non-canonical higher derivative terms. It is further shown that the gauge hierarchy problem can be resolved in such a stabilized scenario by appropriate choice of various parameters of the theory. The effective cosmological constant on the brane is shown to vanish.

$d+id$ Holographic Superconductors

A holographic model of $d+id$ superconductors based on the action proposed by Benini, Herzog, and Yarom [arXiv:1006.0731] is studied. This model has a charged spin two field in an AdS black hole spacetime. Working in the probe limit, the normalizable solution of the spin two field in the bulk gives rise to a $d+id$ superconducting order parameter at the boundary of the AdS. We calculate the fermion spectral function in this\ superconducting background and confirm the existence of fermi arcs for non-vanishing Majorana couplings. By changing the relative strength $γ$ of the $d$ and $id$ condensations, the position and the size of the fermi arcs are changed. When $γ=1$, the spectrum becomes isotropic and the spectral function is s-wave like. By changing the fermion mass, the fermi momentum is changed. We also calculate the conductivity for these holographic $d+id$ superconductors where time reversal symmetry has been broken spontaneously. A non-vanishing Hall conductivity is obtained even without an external magnetic field.

Constraining PCP Violating Varying Alpha Theory Through Laboratory Experiments

In this report we have studied the implication of a parity and charge-parity (PCP) violating interaction in varying alpha theory. Due to this interaction, the state of photon polarization can change when it passes through a strong background magnetic field. We have calculated the optical rotation and ellipticity of the plane of polarization of an electromagnetic wave and tested our results against different laboratory experiments. Our model contains a PCP violating parameter $β$ and a scale of alpha variation $ω$. By analyzing the laboratory experimental data, we found the most stringent constraints on our model parameters to be $1\leq ω\leq 10^{13} GeV^2$ and $-0.5\leq β\leq 0.5$. We also found that with the existing experimental input parameters it is very difficult to detect the ellipticity in the near future.

Cosmological Behavior of a Parity and Charge-Parity Violating Varying Alpha Theory

In this report we construct a phenomenological model in which the time variation of the fine structure constant, $α$, is induced by a parity and charge-parity (PCP) violating interaction. Such a PCP violation in the photon sector has a distinct physical origin from that in the conventional models of this kind. We calculate the cosmological birefringence so induced in our model and show that it in turn produces a new non-vanishing multipole moment correlation between the temperature and the polarization anisotropies in the CMB spectrum. We have also calculated the amount of optical rotation due to a strong background magnetic field and the effect of our new PCP violating term on the variation of $α$ during the cosmic evolution. We found that only in the radiation dominated era can the contribution of the new PCP violating term to the variation of $α$ be non-vanishing.

Higgs Inflation in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the possibility of standard model Higgs boson acting as an inflaton field in the framework of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity. Under this framework, we showed that it is possible for the Higgs field to produce right amount of inflation and generate scale invariant power spectrum with the correct experimental value. Thanks to the foliation preserving diffeomorphism and anisotropic space-time scaling, it essentially helps us to construct this model without the pre-existing inconsistency coming from cosmological and particle physics constraints. We do not need to introduce any non-minimal or higher derivative coupling term in an arbitrary basis either.

Holographic Multi-Band Superconductor

We propose a gravity dual for the holographic superconductor with multi-band carriers. Moreover, the currents of these carriers are unified under a global flavored SO(3) symmetry, which is dual to the bulk SO(3) gauge symmetry. We study the phase diagram of our model, and find it qualitatively agrees with the one for the realistic 2-band superconductor, such as $MgB_2$. We also identify the bulk field dual to the electromagnetic $U(1)_{EM}$ current, which should be invariant under the global flavored SO(3) rotation. We then evaluate the corresponding holographic conductivity and find the expected mean field like behaviors.

Properties of CFTs dual to Charged BTZ black-hole

We study properties of strongly coupled CFT's with non-zero background electric charge in 1+1 dimensions by studying the dual gravity theory - which is a charged BTZ black hole. Correlators of operators dual to scalars, gauge fields and fermions are studied at both T=0 and $T\neq 0$. In the $T=0$ case we are also able to compare with analytical results based on $ AdS_2$ and find reasonable agreement. In particular the correlation between log periodicity and the presence of finite spectral density of gapless modes is seen. The real part of the conductivity (given by the current-current correlator) also vanishes as $ω\rightarrow 0$ as expected. The fermion Green's function shows quasiparticle peaks with approximately linear dispersion but the detailed structure is neither Fermi liquid nor Luttinger liquid and bears some similarity to a "Fermi-Luttinger" liquid. This is expected since there is a background charge and the theory is not Lorentz or scale invariant. A boundary action that produces the observed non-Luttinger-liquid like behavior ($k$-independent non-analyticity at $ω=0$) in the Greens function is discussed.

Towards A Holographic Model of D-Wave Superconductors

The holographic model for S-wave high T_c superconductors developed by Hartnoll, Herzog and Horowitz is generalized to describe D-wave superconductors. The 3+1 dimensional gravitational theory consists a symmetric, traceless second-rank tensor field and a U(1) gauge field in the background of the AdS black hole. Below T_c the tensor field which carries the U(1) charge undergoes the Higgs mechanism and breaks the U(1) symmetry of the boundary theory spontaneously. The phase transition characterized by the D-wave condensate is second order with the mean field critical exponent beta = 1/2. As expected, the AC conductivity is isotropic below T_c and the system becomes superconducting in the DC limit but has no hard gap.

Observable signals in a string inspired axion-dilaton background and Randall-Sundrum scenario

Rotation angle of the plane of polarization of the distant galactic radio waves has been estimated in a string inspired axion-dilaton background. It is found that the axion, dual to the field strength of the second rank antisymmetric massless Kalb-Ramond field in the string spectrum, produces a wavelength independent optical rotation which is much larger than that produced by the dilaton. Detection of such rotation has been reported in some recent cosmological experiments. The observed value has been compared with our estimated theoretical value following various cosmological constraints. The effects of warped extra dimensions in a braneworld scenario on such an optical rotation have been investigated.

Cosmic Optical Activity in a Randall-Sundrum Braneworld with Bulk Kalb-Ramond field

Optical activity of electromagnetic waves in a string inspired Kalb-Ramond cosmological background is studied in presence of extra spacetime dimension. The Kalb-Ramond-electromagnetic coupling which originates from the gauge anomaly cancelling Chern-Simons term in a string inspired model, is explicitly calculated following Randall-Sundrum braneworld conjecture. It is shown that the Randall-Sundrum scenario leads to an enormous enhancement of the optical rotation of a plane polarized electromagnetic wave propagating on the visible brane.Absence of any experimental support in favour of such a large rotation in astrophysical experiments on distant galactic radio waves indicates an apparent conflict between Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario and the presence of Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor field in the background spacetime.
