Bouncing Cosmologies in modified gravity with space time torsion

We explore the possibility of realizing a non-singular bounce in the early universe within the framework of modified gravity with spacetime torsion. In Einstein Cartan theory, torsion is embedded in the spacetime by adding an antisymmetric part in affine connection . We consider generalized version of the framework as $f(\bar{R})$, $\bar{R}$ being the scalar of the modified curvature tensor. $f(\bar{R})$ gravity is recast in Einstein frame as non-minimally coupled scalar tensor theory where the scalar field gets coupled with a rank 2 antisymmetric torsion field through derivative couplings. We investigate whether the introduction of three additional torsion-dependent terms in Einstein frame help to realize a bounce. We first explore this cosmological system in the background of a homogeneous and isotropic FRW spacetime but inclusion of the torsion terms are insufficient to produce a bounce in this symmetric setting. Motivated by this limitation, we relax the symmetry and generalize the background to include inhomogeneity and anisotropy. In this setup, the dynamics is modified in such a way that a bouncing solution is possible without invoking phantom fields or energy condition violations. We have found the exact solutions of all the fields and reconstructed the modified gravity form. We have addressed the behaviour of the fields under perturbation and investigated the stability of the solutions. Constraints on the model parameters have also been derived based on cosmological observations.

On the Emergence of Einstein's Gravity from f(R) Gravity through Cosmological Evolution

$f(R)$-Gravity, a simple generalization of Einstein's General theory of Relativity has been considered in the context of Cosmology as one of the approaches to explain phenomena such as early-time inflation and late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe purely from the Gravity sector. In this work, we have considered a class of $f(R)$-Gravity theories with $f(R)=R+αR^n$ and it's dual scalar tensor theory in the Einstein frame. We have shown that in an isotropic and homogeneous background, for both positive and negative integral values of $n$, the extra scalar degree of freedom of the $f(R)$-theory (manifested as the scalar field in the Einstein frame action) dynamically freezes out due to cosmological evolution, resulting in the survival of only the Einstein-Hilbert term and a cosmological constant at most. This implies that all gravity models given as $R + αR^n$ inevitably evolve into pure Einstein gravity with a cosmological constant term through cosmological evolution.

Nested warped geometry in a non-flat braneworld scenario

We generalize nested multiply warped braneworld models by incorporating non-zero brane curvature caused by an effective cosmological constant Ω induced on the 3-branes. Starting with the doubly warped model, we first analyze the case where the maximally warped brane is identified as the visible brane. For Ω < 0, resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem imposes a small upper bound on |Ω|, and can possibly lead to positivity of all the 3-brane tensions. For Ω > 0, the latter is not possible but the tuning of the cosmological constant to its tiny observed value is linked to the tuning of the extra dimensional moduli close to the inverse Planck length, justifying the original flat brane approximation. In both regimes, we study the dependence of the scale-clustering of the pair of TeV-branes on the brane cosmological constant and hence its potential role in generating a fermion mass hierarchy between these branes. Identifying the near-maximally warped brane as the visible brane instead opens up regions in the parameter space that allow positive 3-brane tensions for both anti de Sitter and de Sitter branes, subject to non-trivial constraints on the warping parameters. We conclude by generalizing the key results to arbitrary n-fold nested warped braneworlds.

Do shadows of Sgr A* and M87* indicate black holes with a magnetic monopole charge?

We study the prospect of Bardeen black holes in explaining the observed shadow of Sgr A* and M87*. Bardeen black holes are regular black holes endowed with a magnetic monopole charge that arise in Einstein gravity coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. These black holes are interesting as they can evade the r = 0 curvature singularity arising in general relativity. It is therefore worthwhile to look for signatures of Bardeen black holes in astrophysical observations. With two successive release of black hole images by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, the scope to test the nature of strong gravity has substantially increased. We compare the theoretically computed shadow observables with the observed image of Sgr A* and M87*. Our analysis reveals that while the observed angular diameter of M87* favors the Kerr scenario, the shadow of Sgr A* can be better explained by the Bardeen background. This indicates that although rare, certain black holes exhibit a preference towards regular black holes like the Bardeen spacetime.

Hilltop inflation and generation of helical magnetic field

Primordial magnetic field generated in the inflationary era can act as a viable source for the present day intergalactic magnetic field of sufficient strength. We present a fundamental origin for such a primordial generation of the magnetic field, namely through anomaly cancellation of $U(1)$ gauge field in quantum electrodynamics in the context of hilltop inflation. We have analysed at length the power spectrum of the magnetic field, thus generated, which turns out to be helical in nature. We have also found that magnetic power spectrum has significant scale-dependence giving rise to a non-trivial magnetic spectral index, a key feature of this model. Interestingly, there exists a large parameter space, where magnetic field of significant strength can be produced.

New $W$-Boson mass in the light of doubly warped braneworld model

The recent observation by CDF collaboration has disclosed a modification in the mass of the $W$ boson. In this regard we show that this modification in the mass of the $W$ boson can be well explained in the background of a 6-dimensional warped geometry model, where the double warping is associated with the two extra spatial dimensions. We consider that all the Standard Model fields are residing in the bulk, where the bulk Higgs field gives rise to the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the 6-dimensional spacetime. Allowing a little hierarchy between the two moduli we exactly obtain the observed mass for the $W$ boson, which is identified as the lowest lying Kaluza-Klein mass mode of the bulk $W$ boson on the $(3+1)$ dimensional visible brane. The essential feature of the 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum scenario such as the resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem without introducing any intermediate scale between the Planck and the TeV scale, remains intact.

Quasar continuum spectrum disfavors black holes with a magnetic monopole charge

Black holes carrying a magnetic monopole charge are a subject of interest for a long time. In this work we explore the possibility of an observational evidence of such black holes carrying a magnetic monopole, namely the Bardeen rotating black holes. We derive the theoretical spectrum from the accretion disk surrounding a Bardeen black hole using the thin-disk approximation. We compare the theoretically derived spectrum in comparison to the optical data of eighty Palomar Green quasars to constrain the monopole charge parameter $g$ and the spin parameter $a$ of the quasars. From our analysis we note that the Kerr-scenario in \gr\ is observationally more favored than black holes with a monopole charge. We arrive at such a conclusion using error estimators like $χ^2$, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, the index of agreement and their modified forms. In particular, black holes with $g \geq 0.03$ are outside $99\%$ confidence interval. The implications are discussed.

Bouncing cosmology in a curved braneworld

We explore the possibility of a non-singular bounce in our universe from a warped braneworld scenario with dynamical branes and a non-zero brane cosmological constant. Such models naturally incorporate a scalar sector known as the radion originating from the modulus of the theory. The presence of brane cosmological constant renders the branes to be non-flat and gives rise to a potential and a non-canonical kinetic term for the radion field in the four dimensional effective action. The kinetic term exhibits a phantom-like behavior within the domain of evolution of the modulus which leads to a violation of the null-energy condition often observed in a bouncing universe. The interplay of the radion potential and kinetic term enables the evolution of the radion field from a normal to a phantom regime where the universe transits from a contracting era to an expanding epoch through a non-singular bounce. Analysis of the scalar and tensor perturbations over such background evolution reveal that the primordial observables e.g., the amplitude of scalar perturbations $\mathcal{A}_s$, tensor to scalar ratio $r$ and the scalar spectral index $n_s$ are in agreement with the current constraints reported by the Planck satellite. The implications are discussed.

Signatures of Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion gravity from the observed jet power and the radiative efficiency

The Einstein-Maxwell dilaton-axion (EMDA) gravity arises in the low energy effective action of the heterotic string theory and provides a simple framework to explore the signatures of the same. The dilaton and the axion fields inherited in the action from string compactifications have interesting consequences in inflationary cosmology and in explaining the present accelerated expansion of the universe. It is therefore worthwhile to search for the footprints of these fields in the available astrophysical observations. Since Einstein gravity is expected to receive quantum corrections in the high curvature domain, the near horizon regime of black holes seems to be the ideal astrophysical laboratory to test these deviations from general relativity. Exact, stationary and axisymmetric black hole solution in EMDA gravity corresponds to the Kerr-Sen spacetime which carries dilaton charge, while the angular momentum is sourced by the axion field. The ballistic jets and the peak emission of the continuum spectrum from the accretion disk are believed to be launched very close to the event horizon and hence should bear the imprints of the background spacetime. We compute the jet power and the radiative efficiency derived from the continuum spectrum in the Kerr-Sen background and compare them with the corresponding observations of microquasars. Our analysis reveals that Kerr black holes are more favored compared to Kerr-Sen black holes with dilaton charges.

Constraining extra-spatial dimensions with observations of GW170817

We derive the modifications introduced by extra-spatial dimensions beyond the four dimensional spacetime on the macroscopic properties of neutron stars, which in turn affect the gravitational wave spectrum of their binaries. It turns out that the mass-radius relation of the neutron stars, and their tidal deformability, are affected non-trivially by the presence of extra dimensions, and can be used to constrain parameters associated with those dimensions. Implications for I-Love-Q universality relations are also discussed and utilized to obtain a constraint on one such parameter. Importantly, we show, for the first time, that measurements of the component masses and tidal deformabilities of the binary neutron star system GW170817, constrain the brane tension in the single brane-world model of Randall and Sundrum to be greater than $35.1~\textrm{GeV}^{4}$. This work opens up the possibility of making such a constraint more robust by improving the modelling of binaries on the brane in the future.

Does black hole continuum spectrum signal f(R) gravity in higher dimensions?

Extra dimensions, which led to the foundation and inception of string theory, provide an elegant approach to force-unification. With bulk curvature as high as the Planck scale, higher curvature terms, namely f(R) gravity seems to be a natural addendum in the bulk action. These can not only pass the classic tests of general relativity but also serve as potential alternatives to dark matter and dark energy. With interesting implications in inflationary cosmology, gravitational waves and particle phenomenology it is worth exploring the impact of extra dimensions and f(R) gravity in black hole accretion. Various classes of black hole solutions have been derived which bear non-trivial imprints of these ultraviolet corrections to general relativity. This in turn gets engraved in the continuum spectrum emitted by the accretion disk around black holes. Since the near horizon regime of supermassive black holes manifest maximum curvature effects, we compare the theoretical estimates of disk luminosity with quasar optical data to discern the effect of the modified background on the spectrum. In particular, we explore a certain class of black hole solution bearing a striking resemblance with the well-known Reissner Nordstrom de Sitter/anti-de Sitter/flat spacetime which unlike general relativity can also accommodate a negative charge parameter. By computing error estimators like chi-square, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, index of agreement, etc. we infer that optical observations of quasars favor a negative charge parameter which can be a possible indicator of extra dimensions. The analysis also supports an asymptotically de Sitter spacetime with an estimate of the magnitude of the cosmological constant whose origin is solely attributed to f(R) gravity in higher dimensions.

Implications of axionic hair on shadow of M87*

Detection of axion field can unfold intriguing facets of our universe in several astrophysical and cosmological scenarios. In four dimensions, such a field owes its origin to the completely anti-symmetric Kalb-Ramond field strength tensor. Its invisibility in the solar system based tests compels one to look for its signatures in the strong field regime. The recent observation of the shadow of the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87 ushers in a new opportunity to test for the footprints of axion in the near horizon region of black holes, where the gravity is expected to be strong. In this paper, we explore the impact of axion on the black hole shadow and compare the result with the available image of M87*. Our analysis indicates that axion which violates the energy condition seems to be favored by observations. The implications are discussed.

Imprints of the Janis-Newman-Winicour spacetime on observations related to shadow and accretion

The final fate of gravitational collapse of massive stars has been a subject of interest for a long time since such a collapse may lead to black holes and naked singularities alike. Since, the formation of naked singularities is forbidden by the cosmic censorship conjecture, exploring their observational differences from black holes may be a possible avenue to search for these exotic objects. The simplest possible naked singularity spacetime emerges from the Einstein massless scalar field theory with the advantage that it smoothly translates to the Schwarzschild solution by the variation of the scalar charge. This background, known as the Janis-Newman-Winicour spacetime is the subject of interest in this work. %A further advantage of working with this spacetime is that it smoothly translates to the Schwarzschild solution by the variation of the scalar charge. We explore electromagnetic observations around this metric which involves investigating the characteristics of black hole accretion and shadow. We compute the shadow radius in this spacetime and compare it with the image of M87*, recently released by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. Similarly, we derive the expression for the luminosity from the accretion disk and compare it with the observed optical luminosity of eleven Palomar Green quasars. Our analysis indicates that the shadow of M87* and the quasar optical data consistently favor the Schwarzschild background over the Janis-Newman-Winicour spacetime. The implications of this result are discussed.

Scalaron tunneling and the fate of antisymmetric tensor fields in $F(R)$ gravity

The work provides a possible explanation of a well motivated question - why the present universe is practically free from any noticeable footmarks of higher rank antisymmetric tensor fields, despite having the signatures of scalar, vector, fermion as well as symmetric rank 2 tensor field in the form of gravity ? The explanation proposed here originates from the higher curvature degrees of freedom present in a $F(R)$ gravity model. In such a model, we show that the scalar degree of freedom (also known as scalaron) associated with the higher curvature term may undergo a quantum tunneling which in turn suppresses the couplings of antisymmetric massless tensor fields with various Standard Model fields.

Silhouette of M87*: A new window to peek into the world of hidden dimensions

The recent observation of the shadow of the supermassive black hole M87*, located at the centre of the M87 galaxy, by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration has opened up a new window to probe the strong gravity regime. In this letter, we explicitly demonstrate the consequences of this observation on brane world black holes, characterized by existence of a negative tidal charge. Our results based on three observables associated with the shadow, namely, angular diameter, deviation from circularity and axis ratio reveal that the existence of a negative tidal charge is more favoured, possibly marking a deviation from general relativity.

Graviton Kaluza Klein modes in non-flat branes with stabilised modulus

We consider a generalised two brane Randall Sundrum model where the branes are endowed with non-zero cosmological constant. In this scenario, we re-examine the modulus stabilisation mechanism and the nature of Kaluza Klein (KK) graviton modes. Our result reveals that while the KK mode graviton masses may change significantly with brane cosmological constant, the Goldberger-Wise stabilisation mechanism, which assumes negligible backreaction on the background metric, continues to hold even when the branes have large cosmological constant. The possibility of having a global minimum for the modulus is also discussed.

Kinematics of Radion field: A possible source of dark matter

The discrepancy between observed virial and baryonic mass in galaxy clusters have lead to the missing mass problem. To resolve this, a new, non-baryonic matter field, known as dark matter has been invoked. However, till date no possible constituents of the dark matter components are known. This has led to various models, by modifying gravity at large distances to explain the missing mass problem. The modification to gravity appears very naturally when effective field theory on a lower dimensional manifold, embedded in a higher dimensional spacetime is considered. It has been shown that in a scenario with two lower dimensional manifolds separated by a finite distance is capable to address the missing mass problem, which in turn determines the kinematics of the brane separation. Consequences for galactic rotation curves are also described.

Lightest Kaluza-Klein graviton mode in a backreacted Randall-Sundrum scenario

In search of extra dimensions in the ongoing LHC experiments, signatures of Randall-Sundrum (RS) lightest KK graviton have been one of the main focus in recent years. The recent data from the dilepton decay channel at the LHC has determined the experimental lower bound on the mass of the RS lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton for different choices of underlying parameters of the theory. In this work we explore the effects of the backreaction of the bulk scalar field, which is employed to stabilise the RS model, in modifying the couplings of the lightest KK graviton with the standard model (SM) matter fields located on the visible brane. In such a modified background geometry we show that the coupling of the lightest KK graviton with the SM matter fields gets a significant suppression due to the inclusion of the backreaction of the bulk stabilising scalar field. This implies that the backreaction parameter weakens the signals from RS scenario in collider experiments which in turn explains the non-visibility of KK graviton in colliders. Thus we show that the modulus stabilisation plays a crucial role in the search of warped extra dimensions in collider experiments.

Modulus stabilisation in a backreacted warped geometry model via Goldberger-Wise mechanism

In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, the stabilisation of extra dimensional modulus is an essential requirement for resolving the gauge hierarchy problem in the context of Standard Model of elementary particle Physics. For Randall-Sundrum (RS) warped extra dimensional model, Goldberger and Wise (GW) proposed a much useful mechanism to achieve this using a scalar field in the bulk spacetime ignoring the effects of backreaction of the scalar field on the background metric. In this article we examine the influence of the backreaction of the stabilising field on the stabilisation condition as well as that on the Physics of the extra dimensional modulus namely radion. In particular we obtain the modifications of the mass and the coupling of the radion with the Standard Model (SM) matter fields on the TeV brane due to backreaction effect. Our calculation also brings out an important equivalence between the treatments followed by Csaki et.al. in \cite{kribs} and Goldberger-Wise in \cite{GW1,GW_radion}.

Solutions on a brane in a bulk spacetime with Kalb-Ramond field

Effective gravitational field equations on a brane have been derived, when the bulk spacetime is endowed with the second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field. Since both the graviton and the Kalb-Ramond field are closed string excitations, they can propagate in the bulk. After deriving the effective gravitational field equations on the brane, we solve them for a static spherically symmetric solution. It turns out that the solution so obtained represents a black hole or naked singularity depending on the parameter space of the model. The stability of this model is also discussed. Cosmological solutions to the gravitational field equations have been obtained, where the Kalb-Ramond field is found to behave as normal pressure free matter. For certain specific choices of the parameters in the cosmological solution, the solution exhibits a transition in the behaviour of the scale factor and hence a transition in the expansion history of the universe. The possibility of accelerated expansion of the universe in this scenario is also discussed.

Solving higher curvature gravity theories

Solving field equations in the context of higher curvature gravity theories is a formidable task. However in many situations, e.g., in the context of $f(R)$ theories the higher curvature gravity action can be written as Einstein-Hilbert action plus a scalar field action. We show that not only the action but the field equations derived from the action are also equivalent provided the spacetime is regular. We also demonstrate that such equivalence continues to hold even when gravitational field equations are projected on a lower dimensional hypersurface. We have further depicted explicit examples in which the solutions for Einstein-Hilbert and a scalar field system lead to solutions of the equivalent higher curvature theory. The same, but on the lower dimensional hypersurface, has been illustrated in the reverse order as well. We conclude with a brief discussion on this technique of solving higher curvature field equations.

Spherically symmetric brane in a bulk of f(R) and Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

Effective gravitational field equations on a four dimensional brane embedded in a five dimensional bulk have been considered. Using the Einstein-Hilbert action along with the Gauss-Bonnet correction term, we have derived static spherically symmetric vacuum solution to the effective field equations, first order in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter. The solution so obtained, has one part corresponding to general relativity with an additional correction term, proportional to the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter. The correction term modifies the spacetime structure, in particular, the location of the event horizon. Proceeding further, we have derived effective field equations for $f(R)$ gravity with Gauss-Bonnet correction term and a static spherically symmetric solution has been obtained. In this case the Gauss-Bonnet term modifies both the event and cosmological horizon of the spacetime. There exist another way of obtaining the brane metric --- expanding the bulk gravitational field equations in the ratio of bulk to brane curvature scale and assuming a separable bulk metric ansatz. It turns out that static, spherically symmetric solutions obtained from this perturbative method can be matched exactly, with the solutions derived earlier. This will hold for Einstein-Hilbert plus Gauss-Bonnet as well as for f(R) with the Gauss-Bonnet correction. Implications of these results are discussed.

A note on spherically symmetric, static spacetimes in Kanno-Soda on-brane gravity

Spherically symmetric, static on-brane geometries in the Kanno-Soda (KS) effective scalar-tensor theory of on-brane gravity are discussed. In order to avoid brane collisions and/or an infinite inter-brane distance, at finite values of the brane coordinates, it is necessary that the radion scalar be everywhere finite and non-zero. This requirement constrains the viability of the standard, well-known solutions in General Relativity (GR), in the context of the KS effective theory. The radion for the Schwarzschild solution does not satisfy the above requirement. For the Reissner--Nordstrom (RN) naked singularity and the extremal RN solution, one can obtain everywhere finite, non-zero radion profiles, though the required on-brane matter violates the Weak Energy Condition. In contrast, for the RN black hole, the radion profile yields a divergent inter-brane distance at the horizon, which makes the solution unphysical. Thus, both the Schwarzschild and the RN solutions can be meaningful in the KS effective theory, only in the trivial GR limit, i.e. with a constant, non-zero radion.

Can extra dimensional effects allow wormholes without exotic matter?

We explore the existence of Lorentzian wormholes in the context of an effective on-brane, scalar-tensor theory of gravity. In such theories, the timelike convergence condition, which is always violated for wormholes, has contributions, via the field equations, from on-brane matter as well as from an effective geometric stress energy generated by a bulk-induced radion field. It is shown that, for a class of wormholes, the required on-brane matter, as seen by an on-brane observer in the Jordan frame, is not exotic and does not violate the Weak Energy Condition. The presence of the effective geometric stress energy in addition to on-brane matter, is largely responsible for creating this intriguing possibility. Thus, if such wormholes are ever found to exist in the Universe, they would clearly provide pointers towards the existence of a warped extra dimension as proposed in the two-brane model of Randall and Sundrum.

Effective field equation on m-brane embedded in n-dimensional bulk of Einstein and f(R) gravity

We have derived effective gravitational field equations on a lower dimensional hypersurface (known as a brane), placed in a higher dimensional bulk spacetime for both Einstein and $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity theories. We have started our analysis on $n$-dimensional bulk from which the effective field equations on a $(n-1)$-dimensional brane has been obtained by imposing $Z_{2}$ symmetry. Subsequently, we have arrived at the effective equations in $(n-2)$-dimensions starting from the effective equations for $(n-1)$ dimensional brane. This analysis has been carried forward and is used to obtain the effective field equations in $(n-m)$-dimensional brane, embedded in a $n$-dimensional bulk. Having obtained the effective field equations in Einstein gravity, we have subsequently generalized the effective field equation in $(n-m)$-dimensional brane which is embedded the $n$-dimensional bulk spacetime endowed with $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity. We have also presented applications of our results in the context of Einstein and $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity. In both the cases we have discussed vacuum static spherically symmetric solutions as well as solutions in cosmological context. Implications are also discussed.

Graviton modes in multiply warped geometry

The negative results in the search for Kaluza-Klein graviton modes at the LHC, when confronted with the discovery of the Higgs, has been construed to have severely limited the efficacy of the Randall-Sundrum model as an explanation of the hierarchy problem. We show, though, that the presence of multiple warping offers a natural resolution of this conundrum through modifications in both the graviton spectrum and their couplings to the Standard Model fields.

Higher rank antisymmetric tensor fields in Klebanov-Strassler geometry

In string theory, higher rank antisymmetric tensor fields appear as massless excitations of closed strings. Till date there is no experimental support in favour of their existence. Metric factorizability and equivalence of brane world models with Brans-Dicke theory

In the standard brane world models, the bulk metric ansatz is usually assumed to be factorizable in brane and bulk coordinates. However, it is not self-evident that it is always possible to factorize the bulk metric. Using the gradient expansion scheme, which involves the expansion of bulk quantities in terms of the brane-to-bulk curvature ratio, as a perturbative parameter, we explicitly show that metric factorizability is a valid assumption upto second order in the perturbative expansion. We also argue from our result that the same should be true for all orders in the perturbation scheme. We further establish that the nonlocal terms present in the bulk gravitational field equation can be replaced by the radion field; the effective action on the brane thereby obtained resembles the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity.

Spherically symmetric brane spacetime with bulk $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity

Introducing $f(\mathcal{R})$ term in the five-dimensional bulk action we derive effective Einstein's equation on the brane using Gauss-Codazzi equation. This effective equation is then solved for different conditions on dark radiation and dark pressure to obtain various spherically symmetric solutions. Some of these static spherically symmetric solutions correspond to black hole solutions, with parameters induced from the bulk. Specially, the dark pressure and dark radiation terms (electric part of Weyl curvature) affect the brane spherically symmetric solutions significantly. We have solved for one parameter group of conformal motions where the dark radiation and dark pressure terms are exactly obtained exploiting the corresponding Lie symmetry. Various thermodynamic features of these spherically symmetric space-times are studied, showing existence of second order phase transition. This phenomenon has its origin in the higher curvature term with $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity in the bulk.

A Geometric Approach to Modulus Stabilization

Modulus stabilization, a must for explaining the hierarchy problem in the context of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) scenario, is traditionally achieved through the introduction of an extra field with {\em ad hoc} couplings. We point out that the stabilization can, instead, be achieved in a purely geometrodynamical way, with plausible quantum corrections in the gravity sector playing the key role. The size of the corrections that lead to acceptable phenomenology is also delineated.

In this paper we study the role of the 5D Gauss-Bonnet corrections and two loop higher genus contribution to the gravity action in type IIB string theory inspired low energy supergravity theory in the light of gravidilatonic interactions on the lightest Kaluza-Klein graviton mass spectrum. From the latest constraints on the lightest Kaluza-Klein graviton mass as obtained from the ATLAS dilepton search in 7 TeV proton-proton collision, we have shown that due to the presence of Gauss-Bonnet and string loop corrections, the warping solution in an ${\bf AdS_{5}}$ bulk is quite distinct from Randall-Sundrum scenario. We discuss the constraints on the model parameters to fit with present ATLAS data.

Bulk scalar field in warped extra dimensional models

This work presents a general formalism to analyze a generic bulk scalar field in a multiple warped extra-dimensional model with arbitrary number of extra dimensions. The Kaluza-Klein mass modes along with the self-interaction couplings are determined and the possibility of having lowest lying KK mode masses near TeV scale are discussed. Also some numerical values for low-lying KK modes has been presented showing explicit localization around TeV scale. It is argued that the appearance of large number of closely spaced KK modes with enhanced coupling may prompt possible new signatures in collider physics.

Cosmological evolution in a two-brane warped geometry model

We study an effective 4-dimensional scalar-tensor field theory, originated from an underlying brane-bulk warped geometry, to explore the scenario of inflation. It is shown that the inflaton potential naturally emerges from the radion energy-momentum tensor which in turn results into an inflationary model of the Universe on the visible brane that is consistent with the recent results from the Planck's experiment. The dynamics of modulus stabilization from the inflaton rolling condition is demonstrated. The implications of our results in the context of recent BICEP2 results are also discussed.

Higher curvature gravity at the LHC

We investigate brane-world models in different viable $F(R)$ gravity theories where the Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the curvature scalar. Deriving the warped metric for this model, resembling Randal-Sundrum (RS) like solutions, we determine the graviton KK modes. The recent observations at the LHC, which constrain the RS graviton KK modes to a mass range greater than 3 TeV, are incompatible to RS model predictions. It is shown that the models with $F(R)$ gravity in the bulk address the issue which in turn constrains the $F(R)$ model itself.

Solar system constraints on alternative gravity theories

The perihelion precession of planetary orbits and the bending angle of null geodesics are estimated for different gravity theories in string-inspired models. It is shown that, for dilaton coupled gravity, the leading order measure in the angle of bending of light comes purely from vacuum expectation value of the dilaton field which may be interpreted as an indicator of a dominant stringy effect over the curvature effect. We arrive at similar results for spherically symmetric solution in quadratic gravity. We also present the perihelion shift and bending of light in the Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet theory with special reference to the Casimir effect and Damour-Polyakov mechanism. Numerical bounds to different coupling parameters in these models are estimated.

Why has spacetime torsion such negligible effect on our universe?

We attempt an answer to the question as to why the evolution of four-dimensional universe is governed by spacetime curvature but not torsion. An answer is found if there is an additional compact spacelike dimension with a warped geometry, with torsion caused by a Kalb-Ramond (KR) antisymmetric tensor field in the bulk. Starting from a Randall-Sundrum type of warped extra dimension, and including the inevitable back reaction ensuing from the radius stabilization mechanism, we show that there is always an extra exponential suppression of the KR field on the four-dimensional projection that constitutes our visible universe. The back reaction is found to facilitate the process of such suppression.

126 GeV Higgs and ATLAS bound on the lightest graviton mass in Randall-Sundrum model

In the search for extra dimension through dilepton events in 7-TeV proton-proton collision, the ATLAS detector at LHC has set stringent lower bound on the mass of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) lightest graviton Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode. Considering that the Randall-Sundrum model undertakes to resolve the well-known gauge hierarchy/fine tuning problem to restrict the Higgs mass within the estimated $\sim 126$ GeV against large radiative correction upto the cut-off of the model, we explore the allowed parameter space within which the RS model can be trusted. We show that the consistency of the model with ATLAS results constrains the cut-off of the theory which is atleast two order lower than the Planck/Quantum gravity scale implying the possible existence of a new Physics at this lower scale.

Collider constraints on Gauss-Bonnet coupling in warped geometry model

In this paper the requirement of a warp solution in an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet 5D warped geometry is shown to fix the signature of Gauss-Bonnet coupling ($α_{5}$). Further, imposing the phenomenological constraints, obtained from the recently observed Higgs like scalar mass as well as $μ$ parameter of the decay channels ${H}_{0}\rightarrowγγ,τ{\bar τ}$ explored in ATLAS and CMS detectors, we obtain a stringent bound on $α_{5}$ within $(4.8 - 5.1)\times 10^{-7}$.

Features of warped geometry in presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling

We study the role of the Gauss-Bonnet corrections and two loop higher genus contribution to the gravity action on the Kaluza-Klien modes and their interactions for different bulk fields which enable one to study various phenomenological implications of string loop corrected Gauss-Bonnet modified warped geometry model in one canvas. We have explicitly derived a phenomenological bound on the Gauss-Bonnet parameter so that the required Planck to TeV scale hierarchy can be achieved through the warp factor in the light of recently discovered Higgs like boson at 125 GeV. Moreover due to the presence of small perturbative Gauss-Bonnet as well as string loop corrections we have shown that the warping solution can be obtained for both de-Sitter and anti-de-Sitter bulk which is quite distinct from Randall-Sundrum scenario. Finally we have evaluated various interactions among these bulk fields and determined the coupling parameters and the Kaluza- Klien mode masses which is crucial to understand the phenomenology of a string two loop corrected Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet warp geometry.

Radion stability and induced, on-brane geometries in an effective scalar-tensor theory of gravity

About a decade ago, using a specific expansion scheme, effective, on-brane scalar tensor theories of gravity were proposed by Kanno and Soda (Phys.Rev. {\bf D 66} 083506 ,(2002)) in the context of the warped two brane model of Randall--Sundrum. The inter-related effective theories on both the branes were derived with the space-time dependent radion field playing a crucial role. Taking a re-look at this effective theory, we find cosmological and spherically symmetric, static solutions sourced by a radion--induced, effective stress energy, as well as additional, on-brane matter. The distance between the branes (governed by the time or space dependent radion) is shown to be stable and asymptotically non-zero, thereby setting aside any possibility of brane collisions. It turns out that the inclusion of on-brane matter plays a decisive role in stabilising the radion - a fact which we demonstrate through our solutions.

Reconciling small radion vacuum expectation values with massive gravitons in an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet warped geometry scenario

In the usual 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum scenario with warped geometry of the extra compact dimension, the Goldberger-Wise mechanism for stabilisation of the radius of compactification can lead to a scalar field called the radion. The radion can have implications in TeV-scale physics, which can be especially noticeable if its vacuum expectation value (vev) is not far above a TeV. However a large mass of the first graviton excitation, which seems to be suggested by recent search limit, tends to make the radion vev, far too large in the minimal model. We show that this is not the case if a Gauss-Bonnet term, containing higher powers of the curvature, is present in the 5-dimensional action. As a result, a radion with vev in the range 1-1.5 TeV can be consistent with the first graviton excitation mass well above 3 TeV.

Thermodynamics of Charged Kalb Ramond AdS black hole in presence of Gauss-Bonnet coupling

We study the role of the Gauss-Bonnet corrections to the gravity action on the charged AdS black hole in presence of rank 3 antisymmetric Kalb Ramond tensor field strength. Analyzing the branch singularity and the killing horizon, we explicitly derive various thermodynamic parameters and study their behaviour in presence of five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet coupling in AdS space-time. The possibility of a second order phase transition is explored in the light of AdS/CMT correspondence and various critical exponents associated with the discontinuities of the various thermodynamic parameters are determined. We further comment on the universality of the well known Rushbrooke Josephson scaling law and derive a relation between the degree of homogeneity appearing in various free energies and the critical exponents by homogeneous hypothesis test. By making use of the constraints appearing from Hawking temperature and Gauss-Bonnet extended gravity version of Kubo formula we introduce a bound on the five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet coupling and the viscosity entropy ratio in the four dimensional holographic Conformal Field Theory (CFT) dual. This yields a fractional deviation in viscosity entropy ratio from the result obtained from Einstein gravity.

Gauge and moduli hierarchy in a multiply warped braneworld scenario

A generalized Randall sundrum model in six dimensional bulk is studied in presence of non-flat 3-branes at the orbifold fixed points. The warp factors for this model is determined in terms of multiple moduli and brane cosmological constant. We show that the requirements of a vanishingly small cosmological constant on the visible brane along with non-hierarchical moduli, each with scale close to Planck length, lead to a scenario where the 3-branes can not have any intermediate scale and have energy scales either close to Tev or close to Planck scale. Such a scenario can address both the gauge hierarchy as well as fermion mass hierarchy problem in standard model. Thus simultaneous resolutions to these problems are closely linked with the near flatness condition of our universe without any intermediate hierarchical scale for the moduli.

Muon (g-2) from the bulk neutrino field in a warped extra dimensional model

In the Randall-Sundrum model, a bulk neutrino field in the 5-dimensional space-time can give rise to tiny Dirac masses to neutrinos. In such a scenario, we have computed the contribution of the bulk neutrino field to the anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ of muon. We have computed this contribution in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge and have found that the contribution has the right sign to fit the current discrepancy between the experiment and the standard model value of $(g-2)_μ$. We have also studied possible constraints on the model parameters by including contributions to $(g-2)_μ$ from other sources such as bulk gravitons.

On the origin of brane cosmological constant in two-brane warped geometry model

In the backdrop of generalised Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario, we look for the possible origin of an effective four dimensional cosmological constant ($Ω_{vis}$) on the visible 3-brane due to the effects of bulk curvature and the modulus field that can either be a constant or dependent on extra dimensional co-ordinate $y$ or a time dependent quantity. In case of constant or $y$ dependent modulus field, the induced $Ω_{vis}$ leads to an exponentially expanding Universe. For such modulus fields the presence of vacuum energy densities on either of the 3-branes as well as a non-vanishing bulk curvature $l$ ($l \sim {Λ_5}^{-1}$) are essential to generate an effective $Ω_{vis}$. In particular for constant modulus field the Hubble constant turns out to be equal to the visible brane cosmological constant which agrees with the present result. In an alternative scenario, a time dependent modulus field is found to be capable of accelerating the Universe. The Hubble parameter in this case is determined for a slowly time-varying modulus field.

The role of higher derivative bulk scalar in stabilizing a warped spacetime

The backreaction on the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime is determined in presence of scalar field in the bulk. A general analysis shows that the stability of such a model can be achieved only if the scalar field action has non-canonical higher derivative terms. It is further shown that the gauge hierarchy problem can be resolved in such a stabilized scenario by appropriate choice of various parameters of the theory. The effective cosmological constant on the brane is shown to vanish.

Bulk Higgs and Gauge fields in a multiply warped braneworld model

We readdress the problems associated with bulk Higgs and the gauge fields in a 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model by extending the model to six dimensions with double warping along the two extra spatial dimensions. In this 6-dimensional model we have a freedom of two moduli scales as against one modulus in the 5-dimensional model. With a little hierarchy between these moduli we can obtain the right magnitude for $W$ and $Z$ boson masses from the Kaluza-Klein modes of massive bulk gauge fields where the spontaneous symmetry breaking is triggered by bulk Higgs . We also have determined the gauge couplings of the standard model fermions with Kaluza-Klein modes of the gauge fields. Unlike the case of 5-dimensional model with a massless bulk gauge field, here we have shown that the gauge couplings and the masses of the Kaluza-Klein gauge fields satisfy the precision electroweak constraints and also obey the Tevatron bounds.

Cosmology and large mass hierarchy in multiply warped braneworld scenario

Hubble expansion in warped braneworld model is addressed in presence of more than one warped extra dimensions. It is shown that while the expansion depends on all the moduli, an exponential nature of the expansion of the scale factor emerges as a generic feature which is independent of the number of extra dimensions. Expression for the effective brane cosmological constant in such model has been derived. It is shown that similar to the 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model a fine tuning between the bulk cosmological constant and brane tension is required to obtain the desired cosmological constant on the brane. The length of the extra dimensions are determined in such scenario. Finally introduing pressureless matter in the bulk an observationally consistent cosmology was obtained on the visible brane.

Fermion mass hierarchy in a multiple warped braneworld model

A geometric understanding of the origin of mass hierarchy among the standard model fermions have been addressed in a multiple warped spacetime. We show that the requirement of $10^{16}$ order warping between the Planck and the visible branes without creating any significant hierarchy among the moduli results into splitting of fermion masses in the standard model. Values of the various parameters of the extra dimensional model and the corresponding fermion masses are determined.

Low-scale SUSY breaking by modular fields and Higgs mass bounds

We consider a scenario where supersymmetry (SUSY) is broken at a relatively low scale by modular fields of extra compact spacelike dimensions. The effect of both soft and hard SUSY breaking terms on the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson are investigated. An important conclusion is that the lightest neutral Higgs can be considerably more massive than what is expected in the MSSM, if the overseeing theory breaks SUSY at a scale not too far above a TeV. An explicit model that implements this has been shown for illustration.

Matter-gravity interaction in a multiply warped braneworld,

The role of a bulk graviton in predicting the signature of extra dimensions through collider-based experiments is explored in the context of a multiply warped spacetime. In particular it is shown that in a doubly warped braneworld model, the presence of the sixth dimension, results in enhanced concentration of graviton Kaluza Klein (KK) modes compared to that obtained in the usual 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model. Also, the couplings of these massive graviton KK modes with the matter fields on the visible brane turn out to be appreciably larger than that in the corresponding 5- dimensional model. The significance of these results are discussed in the context of KK graviton search at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Soft supersymmetry breaking with tiny cosmological constant in flux compactified N=1 Supergravity

Using the flux compactification scenario in a generic supergravity model we construct a set of conditions which are necessary to generate de-Sitter or anti de-Sitter vacua for appropriate choices of the parameters in superpotential. It is shown that a mass spectrum consistent with softly broken TeV scale supersymmetry in a minimal supersymmetric standard model at the observable sector can be obtained along with a tiny cosmological constant when the Kahler and superpotential of the hidden sector satisfy a set of general constraints. Constructing a specific model with Kahler and superpotentials which satisfy the above constraints, it is demonstrated that all the hidden sector fields have vacuum expectation values close to Planck scale and the resulting low energy potential does not have any flat direction.

Tunneling across dilaton coupled black holes in anti de Sitter spacetime

Considering generalised action for dilaton coupled Maxwell-Einstein theory in four dimensions, Gao and Zhang obtained black holes solutions for asymptotically anti de Sitter (Ads) and de Sitter (ds) spacetimes. We study the Hawking radiation in Parikh-Wilczek's tunneling formalism as well as using Bogoliubov transformations. We compare the expression of the Hawking temperature obtained from these two different approaches. Stability and the extremality conditions for such black holes are discussed. The exact dependences of the Hawking temperature and flux on the dilaton coupling parameter are determined. It is shown that the Hawking flux increases with the dilaton coupling parameter. Finally we show that the expression for the Hawking flux obtained using Bogoliubov transformation matches exactly with flux calculated via chiral gauge and gravitational anomalies. This establishes a correspondence among all these different approaches of estimating Hawking radiation from these class of black holes.

Antisymmetric tensor fields in a generalized Randall-Sundrum scenario

Bulk antisymmetric tensor fields of different ranks have been studied in the context of a generalized Randall-Sundrum model with a non-vanishing induced cosmological constant on the visible brane. It is shown that instead of the usual exponential suppression of the couplings of the zero modes of these bulk fields with the brane fermions in the original Randal-Sundrum model, here the couplings are proportional to the brane cosmological constant. Thus in an era of large cosmological constant these fields have significant role in physical phenomena because of their enhanced couplings with the visible brane fermions.

Bulk Higgs field in a Randall-Sundrum model with nonvanishing brane cosmological constant

We consider the possibility of Higgs mechanism in the bulk in a generalised Randall-Sundrum model, where a nonvanishing cosmological constant is induced on the visible brane. This scenario has the advantage of accommodating positive tension of the visible brane and thus ensures stability of the model. It is shown that several problems usually associated with this mechanism are avoided if some dimensionful parameters in the bulk are allowed to lie a little below the Planck mass. The most important of these is keeping the lowest massive mode in the scale of the standard electroweak model, and at the same time reducing the gauge coupling of the next excited state, thus ameliorating otherwise stringent phenomenological constraints.

Scalar Kaluza-Klein modes in a multiply warped braneworld

The Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of a massive scalar field on a 3-brane embedded in six dimensional multiply warped spacetime are determined. Due to the presence of warping along both the extra dimensions the KK mass spectrum splits into two closely spaced branches which is a distinct feature of this model compared to the five dimensional Randall-Sundrum model. This new cluster of the KK mode spectrum is expected to have interesting phenomenological implications for the upcoming collider experiments. Such a scenario may also be extended for even larger number of orbifolded extra dimensions.

Fermion localization in generalised Randall Sundrum model

A generalized two-brane Randall-Sundrum warped braneworld model admits of solutions of the warp factor for both positive or negative cosmological constant on the visible 3-brane which can resolve the naturalness problem in connection with the fine tuning of Higgs mass in the standard model of elementary particles. To explore the location of the standard model fermions in such a generalized warped model, we, in this work, determine the dependence of the localization profile of a bulk fermion on the brane cosmological constant brane tension and the bulk fermion mass. Our results reveal that for a positive and small value of the induced cosmological constant a bulk fermion is localized close to the brane. On the other hand for a visible brane with negative cosmological constant and positive tension, the fermions are localized inside the bulk leading to phenomenologically interesting possibilities.

Stable two--brane models with bulk tachyon matter

We explore the possibility of constructing stable, warped two--brane models which solve the hierarchy problem, with a bulk non--canonical scalar field (tachyon matter) as the source term in the action. Among our examples are two models--one with a warp factor (denoted as $e^{-2f(σ)}$) which differs from that of the standard Randall--Sundrum by the addition of a quadratic piece in the $f(σ)$ and another, where the warping is super-exponential. We investigate the issue of resolution of hierarchy and perform a stability analysis by obtaining the effective inter-brane potentials, in each case. Our analysis reveals that there does exist stable values of the modulus consistent with hierarchy resolution in both the models. Thus, these models, in which the bulk scalar field generates the geometry and also ensures stability, provide viable alternatives to the standard Randall--Sundrum two-brane scenario.

Fermion mass splitting, stability and naturalness problems in warped braneworld models

We generalize the Randall Sundrum warped braneworld model in six and higher dimension and propose a resolution to the mass hierarchy among the standard model fermions. The fine tuning problem in connection with the scalar mass however is shown to reappear in a new guise in five dimensional warped model when the two form antisymmetric tensor fields, a massless string mode, propagates in the bulk. Finally the issue of modulus stabilization is re-examined in presence of a bulk scalar by considering it's back-reaction on the background geometry. The role of higher derivative term of the bulk scalar is shown to be crucial to achieve modulus stabilization.

Observable signals in a string inspired axion-dilaton background and Randall-Sundrum scenario

Rotation angle of the plane of polarization of the distant galactic radio waves has been estimated in a string inspired axion-dilaton background. It is found that the axion, dual to the field strength of the second rank antisymmetric massless Kalb-Ramond field in the string spectrum, produces a wavelength independent optical rotation which is much larger than that produced by the dilaton. Detection of such rotation has been reported in some recent cosmological experiments. The observed value has been compared with our estimated theoretical value following various cosmological constraints. The effects of warped extra dimensions in a braneworld scenario on such an optical rotation have been investigated.

Cosmic Optical Activity in a Randall-Sundrum Braneworld with Bulk Kalb-Ramond field

Optical activity of electromagnetic waves in a string inspired Kalb-Ramond cosmological background is studied in presence of extra spacetime dimension. The Kalb-Ramond-electromagnetic coupling which originates from the gauge anomaly cancelling Chern-Simons term in a string inspired model, is explicitly calculated following Randall-Sundrum braneworld conjecture. It is shown that the Randall-Sundrum scenario leads to an enormous enhancement of the optical rotation of a plane polarized electromagnetic wave propagating on the visible brane.Absence of any experimental support in favour of such a large rotation in astrophysical experiments on distant galactic radio waves indicates an apparent conflict between Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario and the presence of Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor field in the background spacetime.

Does a Kalb-Ramond field make spacetime optically active

A spacetime with torsion produced by a Kalb-Ramond field coupled gravitationally to the Maxwell field, in accordance with a recent proposal by two of us (PM and SS), is argued to lead to an optical activity in synchrotron radiation from cosmologically distant radio sources. We suggest that this could qualitatively explain observational data from a large number of radio sources displaying such polarization asymmetry (after eliminating effects of Faraday rotation due to magnetized galactic plasma). Possible implications for heterotic string theory are also outlined.
