Transcendental Okounkov bodies

We show that the volume of transcendental big $(1,1)$-classes on compact Kähler manifolds can be realized by convex bodies, thus answering questions of Lazarsfeld-Mustaţă and Deng. In our approach we use an approximation process by partial Okounkov bodies together with properties of the restricted volume, and we study the extension of Kähler currents, as well as the bimeromorphic behavior of currents with analytic singularities. We also establish a connection between transcendental Okounkov bodies and toric degenerations.

Deformations of Kähler manifolds to normal bundles and restricted volumes of big classes

The deformation of a variety $X$ to the normal cone of a subvariety $Y$ is a classical construction in algebraic geometry. In this paper we study the case when $(X,ω)$ is a compact Kähler manifold and $Y$ is a submanifold. The deformation space $\mathcal{X}$ is fibered over $\mathbb{P}^1$ and all the fibers $X_τ$ are isomorphic to $X$, except the zero-fiber, which has the projective completion of the normal bundle $N_{Y|X}$ as one of its components. The first main result of this paper is that one can find Kähler forms on modifications of $\mathcal{X}$ which restricts to $ω$ on $X_1$ and which makes the volume of the normal bundle in the zero-fiber come arbitrarily close to the volume of $X$. Phrased differently, we find Kähler deformations of $(X,ω)$ such that almost all of the mass ends up in the normal bundle. The proof relies on a general result on the volume of big cohomology classes, which is the other main result of the paper. A $(1,1)$ cohomology class on a compact Kähler manifold $X$ is said to be big if it contains the sum of a Kähler form and a closed positive current. A quantative measure of bigness is provided by the volume function, and there is also a related notion of restricted volume along a submanifold. We prove that if $Y$ is a smooth hypersurface which intersects the Kähler locus of a big class $α$ then up to a dimensional constant, the restricted volume of $α$ along $Y$ is equal to the derivative of the volume at $α$ in the direction of the cohomology class of $Y$. This generalizes the corresponding result on the volume of line bundles due to Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson and independently Lazarsfeld-Mustaţă.

Duality between the pseudoeffective and the movable cone on a projective manifold

We prove a conjecture of Boucksom-Demailly-Păun-Peternell, namely that on a projective manifold $X$ the cone of pseudoeffective classes in $H^{1,1}_{\mathbb{R}}(X)$ is dual to the cone of movable classes in $H^{n-1,n-1}_{\mathbb{R}}(X)$ via the Poincaré pairing. This is done by establishing a conjectured transcendental Morse inequality for the volume of the difference of two nef classes on a projective manifold. As a corollary the movable cone is seen to be equal to the closure of the cone of balanced metrics. In an appendix by Boucksom it is shown that the Morse inequality also implies that the volume function is differentiable on the big cone, and one also gets a characterization of the prime divisors in the non-Kähler locus of a big class via intersection numbers.

Homogeneous Monge-Ampère Equations and Canonical Tubular Neighbourhoods in Kähler Geometry

We prove the existence of canonical tubular neighbourhoods around complex submanifolds of Kähler manifolds that are adapted to both the holomorphic and symplectic structure. This is done by solving the complex Homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation on the deformation to the normal cone of the submanifold. We use this to establish local regularity for global weak solutions, giving local smoothness to the (weak) geodesic rays in the space of (weak) Kähler potentials associated to a given complex submanifold. We also use it to get an optimal regularity result for naturally defined plurisubharmonic envelopes and for the boundaries of their associated equilibrium sets.

Harmonic Discs of Solutions to the Complex Homogeneous Monge-Ampère Equation

We study regularity properties of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the complex Homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation. We show that for certain boundary data on $\mathbb P^1$ the solution $Φ$ to this Dirichlet problem is connected via a Legendre transform to an associated flow in the complex plane called the Hele-Shaw flow. Using this we determine precisely the harmonic discs associated to $Φ$. We then give examples for which these discs are not dense in the product, and also prove that this situation persists after small perturbations of the boundary data.

Transforming metrics on a line bundle to the Okounkov body

Let $L$ be a big holomorphic line bundle on a complex projective manifold $X.$ We show how to associate a convex function on the Okounkov body of $L$ to any continuous metric $ψ$ on $L.$ We will call this the Chebyshev transform of $ψ,$ denoted by $c[ψ].$ Our main theorem states that the difference of metric volume of $L$ with respect to two metrics, a notion introduced by Berman-Boucksom, is equal to the integral over the Okounkov body of the difference of the Chebyshev transforms of the metrics. When the metrics have positive curvature the metric volume coincides with the Monge-Ampère energy, which is a well-known functional in Kähler-Einstein geometry and Arakelov geometry. We show that this can be seen as a generalization of classical results on Chebyshev constants and the Legendre transform of invariant metrics on toric manifolds. As an application we prove the differentiability of the metric volume in the cone of big metrized $\mathbb{R}$-divisors. This generalizes the result of Boucksom-Favre-Jonsson on the differentiability of the ordinary volume of big $\mathbb{R}$-divisors and the result of Berman-Boucksom on the differentiability of the metric volume when the underlying line bundle is fixed.
