Dynamics of the Fermion-Rotor System

We explore the dynamics of the fermion-rotor system, a simple impurity model in d=1+1 dimensions that consists of a collection of purely right-moving fermions interacting with a quantum mechanical rotor localised at the origin. This was first introduced by Polchinski as a toy model for monopole-fermion scattering and is surprisingly subtle, with ingoing and outgoing fermions carrying different quantum numbers. We show that the rotor acts as a twist operator in the low-energy theory, changing the quantum numbers of excitations that have previously passed through the origin to ensure scattering consistent with all symmetries. We further show how generalisations of this model with multiple rotors and unequal charges can be viewed as a UV-completion of boundary states for chiral theories, including the well-studied 3450 model. We compute correlation functions between ingoing and outgoing fermions and show that fermions dressed with the rotor degree of freedom act as local operators and create single-particle states, generalising an earlier result obtained in a theory with a single rotor and equal charges. Finally, we point out a mod 2 anomaly in these models that descends from the Witten anomaly in 4d

Fermion-Monopole Scattering in the Standard Model

We study the scattering of fermions off 't Hooft lines in the Standard Model. A long-standing paradox suggests that the outgoing fermions necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. In a previous paper, we resolved this paradox in the context of a number of toy models where we showed that the outgoing radiation is created by operators that are attached to a co-dimension 1 topological surface. This shifts the quantum numbers of the outgoing states associated to non-anomalous symmetries to be integer valued as required, while the quantum numbers associated to anomalous symmetries are fractional. Here we apply these ideas to the Standard Model.

Comments on Symmetric Mass Generation in 2d and 4d

Symmetric mass generation is the name given to a mechanism for gapping fermions while preserving a chiral, but necessarily non-anomalous, symmetry. In this paper we describe how symmetric mass generation for continuous symmetries can be achieved using gauge dynamics in two and four dimensions. Various strong coupling effects are invoked, including known properties of supersymmetric gauge theories, specifically the phenomenon of s-confinement, and conjectured properties of non-supersymmetric chiral gauge theories.

On Discrete Anomalies in Chiral Gauge Theories

We study two well-known $SU(N)$ chiral gauge theories with fermions in the symmetric, anti-symmetric and fundamental representations. We give a detailed description of the global symmetry, including various discrete quotients. Recent work argues that these theories exhibit a subtle mod 2 anomaly, ruling out certain phases in which the theories confine without breaking their global symmetry, leaving a gapless composite fermion in the infra-red. We point out that no such anomaly exists. We further exhibit an explicit path to the gapless fermion phase, showing that there is no kinematic obstruction to realising these phases.

What Symmetries are Preserved by a Fermion Boundary State?

Usually, a left-moving fermion in d=1+1 dimensions reflects off a boundary to become a right-moving fermion. This means that, while overall fermion parity $(-1)^F$ is conserved, chiral fermion parity for left- and right-movers individually is not. Remarkably, there are boundary conditions that do preserve chiral fermion parity, but only when the number of Majorana fermions is a multiple of 8. In this paper we classify all such boundary states for $2N$ Majorana fermions when a $U(1)^N$ symmetry is also preserved. The fact that chiral-parity-preserving boundary conditions only exist when $2N$ is divisible by 8 translates to an interesting property of charge lattices. We also classify the enhanced continuous symmetry preserved by such boundary states. The state with the maximum such symmetry is the $SO(8)$ boundary state, first constructed by Maldacena and Ludwig to describe the scattering of fermions off a monopole

Boundary RG Flows for Fermions and the Mod 2 Anomaly

Boundary conditions for Majorana fermions in d=1+1 dimensions fall into one of two SPT phases, associated to a mod 2 anomaly. Here we consider boundary conditions for 2N Majorana fermions that preserve a $U(1)^N$ symmetry. In general, the left-moving and right-moving fermions carry different charges under this symmetry, and implementation of the boundary condition requires new degrees of freedom, which manifest themselves in a boundary central charge, $g$. We follow the boundary RG flow induced by turning on relevant boundary operators. We identify the infra-red boundary state. In many cases, the boundary state flips SPT class, resulting in an emergent Majorana mode needed to cancel the anomaly. We show that the ratio of UV and IR boundary central charges is given by $g^2_{IR} / g^2_{UV} = {\rm dim}\,({\cal O})$, the dimension of the perturbing boundary operator. Any relevant operator necessarily has ${\rm dim}({\cal O}) < 1$, ensuring that the central charge decreases in accord with the g-theorem.

Boundary States for Chiral Symmetries in Two Dimensions

We study boundary states for Dirac fermions in d=1+1 dimensions that preserve Abelian chiral symmetries, meaning that the left- and right-moving fermions carry different charges. We derive simple expressions, in terms of the fermion charge assignments, for the boundary central charge and for the ground state degeneracy of the system when two different boundary conditions are imposed at either end of an interval. We show that all such boundary states fall into one of two classes, related to SPT phases supported by (-1)^F, which are characterised by the existence of an unpaired Majorana zero mode.

Evidence for a Non-Supersymmetric 5d CFT from Deformations of 5d $SU(2)$ SYM

We study supersymmetry breaking deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5d fixed point known as $E_1$, the UV completion of $SU(2)$ super-Yang-Mills. The phases of the non-supersymmetric theory can be characterized by Chern-Simons terms involving background $U(1)$ gauge fields, allowing us to identify a phase transition at strong coupling. We propose that this may signify the emergence of a non-trivial, non-supersymmetric CFT in $d=4+1$ dimensions.

Hypercharge Quantisation and Fermat's Last Theorem

What values of the Standard Model hypercharges result in a mathematically consistent quantum field theory? We show that the constraints imposed by the lack of gauge anomalies can be recast as the equation x^3 + y^3 = z^3. If hypercharge is quantised, then x, y and z must be integers. The trivial (and only) solutions, with x=0 or y=0, reproduce the hypercharge assignments seen in Nature. This argument does not rely on the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly, which is automatically vanishing if hypercharge is quantised and the gauge anomalies vanish.

Notes on 8 Majorana Fermions

Eight Majorana fermions in $d=1+1$ dimensions enjoy a triality that permutes the representation of the $SO(8)$ global symmetry in which the fermions transform. This triality plays an important role in the quantization of the superstring, and in the analysis of interacting topological insulators and the associated phenomenon of symmetric mass generation. The purpose of these notes is to provide an introduction to the triality and its applications, with careful attention paid to various ${\bf Z}_2$ global and gauge symmetries and their coupling to background spin structures.

A Matrix Model for Non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

We propose a matrix quantum mechanics for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. The model describes electrons which carry an internal SU(p) spin. The ground states of the matrix model include spin-singlet generalisations of the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states and, in general, lie in a class previously introduced by Blok and Wen. The effective action for these states is a U(p) Chern-Simons theory. We show how the matrix model can be derived from quantisation of the vortices in this Chern-Simons theory and how the matrix model ground states can be reconstructed as correlation functions in the boundary WZW model.

A Matrix Model for WZW

We study a U(N) gauged matrix quantum mechanics which, in the large N limit, is closely related to the chiral WZW conformal field theory. This manifests itself in two ways. First, we construct the left-moving Kac-Moody algebra from matrix degrees of freedom. Secondly, we compute the partition function of the matrix model in terms of Schur and Kostka polynomials and show that, in the large $N$ limit, it coincides with the partition function of the WZW model. This same matrix model was recently shown to describe non-Abelian quantum Hall states and the relationship to the WZW model can be understood in this framework.

On Superconformal Anyons

In d=2+1 dimensions, there exist field theories which are non-relativistic and superconformal. These theories describe two species of anyons, whose spins differ by 1/2, interacting in a harmonic trap. We compute the dimensions of chiral primary operators. These operators receive large anomalous dimensions which are related to the unusual angular momentum properties of anyons. Surprisingly, we find that the dimensions of some chiral primary operators violate the unitarity bound and we trace this to the fact that the associated wavefunctions become non-normalisable. We also study BPS non-perturbative states in this theory: these are Jackiw-Pi vortices. We show that these emerge at exactly the point where perturbative operators hit the unitarity bound. To describe the low-energy dynamics of these vortices, we construct a novel type of supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model.

ADHM Revisited: Instantons and Wilson Lines

We revisit the well-studied D0-D4 system of D-branes and its relationship to the ADHM construction. It is well known that the D0-branes appear as instantons in the D4-brane worldvolume. We add a Wilson line to the D4-brane in the guise of an extended fundamental string and determine how this affects the D0-brane dynamics. As the D0-brane moves in the presence of the Wilson line, it experiences a Lorentz force, proportional to its Yang-Mills gauge connection. From the perspective of the D0-brane quantum mechanics, this force emerges through the ADHM construction of the self-dual gauge connection.

Vortices and Monopoles in a Harmonic Trap

The Omega-deformation is a harmonic trap, penning certain excitations near the origin in a manner consistent with supersymmetry. Here we explore the dynamics of BPS monopoles and vortices in such a trap. We pay particular attention to monopoles in the Higgs phase, when they are confined to a vortex string. Unusually for BPS solitons, the mass of these confined monopoles is quadratic in the topological charges. We compute an index theorem to determine the number of collective coordinates of confined monopoles. Despite being restricted to move on a line, we find that they have a rich dynamics. As the strength of the trap increases, the number of collective coordinates can change, sometimes with constituent monopoles disappearing, sometimes with new ones emerging.

Holographic Charge Oscillations

The Reissner-Nordstrom black hole provides the prototypical description of a holographic system at finite density. We study the response of this system to the presence of a local, charged impurity. Below a critical temperature, the induced charge density, which screens the impurity, exhibits oscillations. These oscillations can be traced to the singularities in the density-density correlation function moving in the complex momentum plane. At finite temperature, the oscillations are very similar to the Friedel oscillations seen in Fermi liquids. However, at zero temperature the oscillations in the black hole background remain exponentially damped, while Friedel oscillations relax to a power-law

Holographic Lattices Give the Graviton a Mass

We discuss the DC conductivity of holographic theories with translational invariance broken by a background lattice. We show that the presence of the lattice induces an effective mass for the graviton via a gravitational version of the Higgs mechanism. This allows us to obtain, at leading order in the lattice strength, an analytic expression for the DC conductivity in terms of the size of the lattice at the horizon. In locally critical theories this leads to a power law resistivity that is in agreement with an earlier field theory analysis of Hartnoll and Hofman.

Intersecting Branes, Domain Walls and Superpotentials in 3d Gauge Theories

We revisit the Hanany-Witten brane construction of 3d gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry. Instantons are known to generate a superpotential on the Coulomb branch of the theory. We show that this superpotential can be viewed as arising from the classical scattering of domain wall solitons. The domain walls live on the worldvolume of the fivebranes and their existence relies on the recent observation that the charged hypermultiplet at the intersection of perpendicular D-branes has non-canonical kinetic terms. We further show how Dp branes may be absorbed at the intersection of perpendicular D(p+4)-branes where they appear as BPS sigma-model lumps.

Monopoles and Wilson Lines

We present a semi-classical description of BPS monopoles interacting with Wilson lines. The Wilson lines are represented as non-Abelian spin impurities. These spins interact with the monopole degrees of freedom through a natural connection on the moduli space. We employ this technology in N = 2 SU(2) gauge theory to count the number of framed BPS states of a single monopole bound to Wilson lines in different representations.

Vortices and Impurities

We describe the BPS dynamics of vortices in the presence of impurities. We argue that a moduli space of solitons survives the addition of both electric and magnetic impurities. However, dynamics on the moduli space is altered. In the case of electric impurities, the metric remains unchanged but the dynamics is accompanied by a connection term, acting as an effective magnetic field over the moduli space. We give an expression for this connection and compute the vortex-impurity bound states in simple cases. In contrast, magnetic impurities distort the metric on the moduli space. We show that magnetic impurities can be viewed as vortices associated to a second, frozen, gauge group. We provide a D-brane description of the dynamics of vortices in product gauge groups and show how one can take the limit such that a subset of the vortices freeze.

Gauge Dynamics and Topological Insulators

A non-abelian magnetic field in Yang-Mills theory induces the formation of a "W-boson" vortex lattice. We study the propagation of fundamental fermions in the presence of this lattice in 2+1 dimensions. We show that the spectrum for massless fermions contains four topologically-protected Dirac points with non-zero Bloch momentum. For massive fermions, we compute topological invariants of the band structure and show that it is possible to realise a Z2 topological insulator within Yang-Mills theory.

Confinement in Anti-de Sitter Space

Four dimensional gauge theories in anti-de Sitter space, including pure Yang-Mills theory, exhibit a quantum phase transition between a deconfined phase and a confined phase as the gauge coupling is varied. We explore various mechanisms by which this may occur, both in a fixed background and in the presence of gravity. We also make a number of observations on the dynamics of four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories in anti-de Sitter space.

Fluctuation and Dissipation at a Quantum Critical Point

In non-relativistic field theories, quantum fluctuations give rise to dissipative behaviour even at zero temperature. Here we use holographic methods to explore the dissipative dynamics of massive particles coupled to quantum critical theories. We present analytic expressions for correlation functions and response functions. The behaviour changes qualitatively as the dynamical exponent passes through z = 2. In particular, for z > 2, the long time dynamics of the particle is independent of its inertial mass.

Further Evidence for Lattice-Induced Scaling

We continue our study of holographic transport in the presence of a background lattice. We recently found evidence that the presence of a lattice induces a new intermediate scaling regime in asymptotically $AdS_4$ spacetimes. This manifests itself in the optical conductivity which exhibits a robust power-law dependence on frequency, $σ\sim ω^{-2/3}$, in a "mid-infrared" regime, a result which is in striking agreement with experiments on the cuprates. Here we provide further evidence for the existence of this intermediate scaling regime. We demonstrate similar scaling in the thermoelectric conductivity, find analogous scalings in asymptotically $AdS_5$ spacetimes, and show that we get the same results with an ionic lattice.

Holographic Dual of the Lowest Landau Level

We describe the lowest Landau level of a quantum electron star in AdS4. In the presence of a suitably strong magnetic field, the dynamics of fermions in the bulk is effectively reduced from four to two dimensions. These two-dimensional fermions can subsequently be treated using the techniques of bosonization and the difficult many-body problem of building a gravitating, charged quantum star is reduced to solving the sine-Gordon model coupled to a gauge field and a metric. The kinks of the sine-Gordon model provide the holographic dual of the lowest Landau levels of the strongly-coupled d=2+1 dimensional boundary field theory. The system exhibits order one oscillations in the magnetic susceptibility, now arising as a classical effect in the bulk. Moreover, as the chemical potential is varied, we find jumps in the charge density, oscillations in the fractionalised charge density and plateaux in the cohesive charge density

Magnetic Catalysis in AdS4

We study the formation of fermion condensates in Anti de Sitter space. In particular, we describe a novel version of magnetic catalysis that arises for fermions in asymptotically AdS4 geometries which cap off in the infra-red with a hard wall. We show that the presence of a magnetic field induces a fermion condensate in the bulk that spontaneously breaks CP symmetry. From the perspective of the dual boundary theory, this corresponds to a strongly coupled version of magnetic catalysis in d=2+1.

Monopoles and Holography

We present a holographic theory in AdS_4 whose zero temperature ground state develops a crystal structure, spontaneously breaking translational symmetry. The crystal is induced by a background magnetic field, but requires no chemical potential. This lattice arises from the existence of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solitons in the bulk which condense to form a classical object known as a monopole wall. In the infra-red, the magnetic field is screened and there is an emergent SU(2) global symmetry.

Towards strange metallic holography

We initiate a holographic model building approach to `strange metallic' phenomenology. Our model couples a neutral Lifshitz-invariant quantum critical theory, dual to a bulk gravitational background, to a finite density of gapped probe charge carriers, dually described by D-branes. In the physical regime of temperature much lower than the charge density and gap, we exhibit anomalous scalings of the temperature and frequency dependent conductivity. Choosing the dynamical critical exponent $z$ appropriately we can match the non-Fermi liquid scalings, such as linear resistivity, observed in strange metal regimes. As part of our investigation we outline three distinct string theory realizations of Lifshitz geometries: from F theory, from polarised branes, and from a gravitating charged Fermi gas. We also identify general features of renormalisation group flow in Lifshitz theories, such as the appearance of relevant charge-charge interactions when $z \geq 2$. We outline a program to extend this model building approach to other anomalous observables of interest such as the Hall conductivity.

Quantum Vortex Strings: A Review

The quantum worldsheet dynamics of vortex strings contains information about the 4d non-Abelian gauge theory in which the string lives. Here I tell this story. The string worldsheet theory is typically some variant of the CP^{N-1} sigma-model, describing the orientation of the string in a U(N) gauge group. Qualitative parallels between 2d sigma-models and 4d non-Abelian gauge theories have been known since the 1970s. The vortex string provides a quantitative link between the two. In 4d theories with N=2 supersymmetry, the exact BPS spectrum of the worldsheet coincides with the bulk spectrum in 4d. Moreover, by tuning parameters, the CP^{N-1} sigma-model can be coaxed to flow to an interacting conformal fixed point which is related to the 4d Argyres-Douglas fixed point. For theories with N=1 supersymmetry, the worldsheet theory suffers dynamical supersymmetry breaking and, more interestingly, supersymmetry restoration, in a way which captures the physics of Seiberg's quantum deformed moduli space.

The Berry Phase of D0-Branes

We study SU(2) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with N=2,4,8 and 16 supercharges. This describes the non-relativistic dynamics of a pair of D0-branes moving in d=3,4,6 and 10 spacetime dimensions respectively. We show that as the D0-branes orbit, states undergo a Berry holonomy described by the four Hopf maps. For the N=2 theory, the associated Hopf map is the Mobius bundle and its effect is to turn the D0-branes into anyons with exchange statistics +i and -i. For the N=4,8 and 16 theories, the Hopf maps give rise to Berry connections that are familiar to physicists: the U(1) Dirac monopole; the SU(2) Yang monopole; and the SO(8) octonionic monopole.

Aspects of Non-Abelian Gauge Dynamics in Two-Dimensional N=(2,2) Theories

We study various aspects of N=(2,2) supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theories in two dimensions, with applications to string vacua. We compute the Witten index of SU(k) SQCD with N>0 flavors with twisted masses; the result is presented as the solution to a simple combinatoric problem. We further claim that the infra-red fixed point of SU(k) gauge theory with N massless flavors is non-singular if (k,N) passes a related combinatoric criterion. These results are applied to the study of a class of U(k) linear sigma models which, in one phase, reduce to sigma models on Calabi-Yau manifolds in Grassmannians. We show that there are multiple singularities in the middle of the one-dimensional Kahler moduli space, in contrast to the Abelian models. This result precisely matches the complex structure singularities of the proposed mirrors. In one specific example, we study the physics in the other phase of the Kahler moduli space and find that it reduces to a sigma model for a second Calabi-Yau manifold which is not birationally equivalent to the first. This proves a mathematical conjecture of Rodland.

On Monopoles and Domain Walls

The purpose of this paper is to describe a relationship between maximally supersymmetric domain walls and magnetic monopoles. We show that the moduli space of domain walls in non-abelian gauge theories with N flavors is isomorphic to a complex, middle dimensional, submanifold of the moduli space of U(N) magnetic monopoles. This submanifold is defined by the fixed point set of a circle action rotating the monopoles in the plane. To derive this result we present a D-brane construction of domain walls, yielding a description of their dynamics in terms of truncated Nahm equations. The physical explanation for the relationship lies in the fact that domain walls, in the guise of kinks on a vortex string, correspond to magnetic monopoles confined by the Meissner effect.

The dS/dS Correspondence

We present a holographic duality for the de Sitter static patch which consolidates basic features of its geometry and the behavior of gravity and brane probes, valid on timescales short compared to the decay or Poincare recurrence times. Namely de Sitter spacetime $dS_d(R)$ in $d$ dimensions with curvature radius $R$ is holographically dual to two conformal field theories on $dS_{d-1}(R)$, cut off at an energy scale 1/R where they couple to each other and to $d-1$ dimensional gravity. As part of our analysis, we study brane probes in de Sitter and thermal Anti de Sitter spaces, and interpret the terms in the corresponding DBI action via strongly coupled thermal field theory. This provides a dual field theoretic interpretation of the fact that probes take forever to reach a horizon in general relativity.

NS5-Branes, T-Duality and Worldsheet Instantons

The equivalence of NS5-branes and ALF spaces under T-duality is well known. However, a naive application of T-duality transforms the ALF space into a smeared NS5-brane, de-localized on the dual, transverse, circle. In this paper we re-examine this duality, starting from a two-dimensional N=(4,4) gauged linear sigma model describing Taub-NUT space. After dualizing the circle fiber, we find that the smeared NS5-brane target space metric receives corrections from multi-worldsheet instantons. These instantons are identified as Nielsen-Olesen vortices. We show that their effect is to break the isometry of the target space, localizing the NS5-brane at a point. The contribution from the k-instanton sector is shown to be proportional to the weighted integral of the Euler form over the k-vortex moduli space. The duality also predicts the, previously unknown, asymptotic exponential decay coefficient of the BPS vortex solution.

Conifold Transitions and Five-Brane Condensation in M-Theory on Spin(7) Manifolds

We conjecture a topology changing transition in M-theory on a non-compact asymptotically conical Spin(7) manifold, where a 5-sphere collapses and a CP(2) bolt grows. We argue that the transition may be understood as the condensation of M5-branes wrapping the 5-sphere. Upon reduction to ten dimensions, it has a physical interpretation as a transition of D6-branes lying on calibrated submanifolds of flat space. In yet another guise, it may be seen as a geometric transition between two phases of type IIA string theory on a G_2 holonomy manifold with either wrapped D6-branes, or background Ramond-Ramond flux. This is the first non-trivial example of a topology changing transition with only 1/16 supersymmetry.

Mirror Symmetry in 2+1 and 1+1 Dimensions

We study the Coulomb-Higgs duality of N=2 supersymmetric Abelian Chern-Simons theories in 2+1 dimensions, by compactifying dual pairs on a circle of radius R and comparing the resulting N=(2,2) theories in 1+1 dimensions. Below the compactification scale, the theory on the Higgs branch reduces to the non-linear sigma model on a toric manifold. In the dual theory on the Coulomb branch, the Kaluza-Klein modes generate an infinite tower of contributions to the superpotential. After resummation, in the limit R->0 the superpotential becomes that of the Landau-Ginzburg model which is the two-dimensional mirror of the toric sigma model. We further examine the conjecture of all-scale three-dimensional mirror symmetry and observe that it is consistent with mirror symmetry in 1+1 dimensions.

D-brane Solitons in Supersymmetric Sigma-Models

Massive D=4 N=2 supersymmetric sigma models typically admit domain wall (Q-kink) solutions and string (Q-lump) solutions, both preserving 1/2 supersymmetry. We exhibit a new static 1/4 supersymmetric `kink-lump' solution in which a string ends on a wall, and show that it has an effective realization as a BIon of the D=4 super DBI-action. It is also shown to have a time-dependent Q-kink-lump generalization which reduces to the Q-lump in a limit corresponding to infinite BI magnetic field. All these 1/4 supersymmetric sigma-model solitons are shown to be realized in M-theory as calibrated, or `Q-calibrated', M5-branes in an M-monopole background.

Dynamics of N=2 Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theories

We discuss several aspects of three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to chiral multiplets. The generation of Chern-Simons couplings at low-energies results in novel behaviour including compact Coulomb branches, non-abelian gauge symmetry enhancement and interesting patterns of dynamically generated potentials. We further show how, given any pair of mirror theories with N=4 supersymmetry, one may flow to a pair of mirror theories with N=2 supersymmetry by gauging a suitable combination of the R-symmetries. The resulting theories again have interesting properties due to Chern-Simons couplings.

Instantons, Three Dimensional Gauge Theories and Monopole Moduli Spaces

We calculate instanton corrections to three dimensional gauge theories with N=4 and N=8 supersymmetry and SU(n) gauge groups. The N=4 results give new information about the moduli space of n BPS SU(2) monopoles, including the leading order non-pairwise interaction terms. A few comments are made on the relationship of the N=8 results to membrane scattering in matrix theory.
