Nonlinear automorphism of the conformal algebra in 2D and continuous $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformations

The conformal algebra in 2D (Diff($S^{1}$)$\oplus$Diff($S^{1}$)) is shown to be preserved under a nonlinear map that mixes both chiral (holomorphic) generators $T$ and $\bar{T}$. It depends on a single real parameter and it can be regarded as a ``nonlinear $SO(1,1)$ automorphism.'' The map preserves the form of the momentum density and naturally induces a flow on the energy density by a marginal $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation. In turn, the general solution of the corresponding flow equation of the deformed action can be analytically solved in closed form, recovering the nonlinear automorphism. The deformed CFT$_{2}$ can also be described through the original theory on a field-dependent curved metric whose lapse and shift functions are given by the variation of the deformed Hamiltonian with respect to the energy and momentum densities, respectively. The conformal symmetries of the deformed theories can then also be seen to arise from diffeomorphisms that fulfill suitably deformed conformal Killing equations. Besides, Cardy formula is shown to map to itseft under the nonlinear automorphism. As a simple example, the deformation of $N$ free bosons is briefly addressed, making contact with recent related results and the dimensional reduction of the ModMax theory. Furthermore, the nonlinear map between the conformal algebra in 2D and its ultra/non-relativistic versions (BMS$_{3}$$\approx$CCA$_{2}$$\approx$GCA$_{2}$), including the corresponding finite $\sqrt{T\bar{T}}$ deformation, are recovered from a limiting case of the nonlinear automorphism. The extension to a three-parameter nonlinear $ISO(1,1)$ automorphism of the conformal algebra, and a discrete nonlinear automorphism of BMS$_{3}$ are also briefly discussed.

The (super)conformal BMS$_3$ algebra

The conformal extension of the BMS$_{3}$ algebra is constructed. Apart from an infinite number of 'superdilatations,' in order to incorporate 'superspecial conformal transformations,' the commutator of the latter with supertranslations strictly requires the presence of nonlinear terms in the remaining generators. The algebra appears to be very rigid, in the sense that its central extensions as well as the nonlinear terms coefficients become determined by the central charge of the Virasoro subalgebra. The wedge algebra corresponds to the conformal group in three spacetime dimensions $SO(3,2)$, so that the full algebra can also be interpreted as an infinite-dimensional nonlinear extension of the AdS$_{4}$ algebra with nontrivial central charges. Moreover, since the Lorentz subalgebra ($sl(2,R)$) is non-principally embedded within the conformal (wedge) algebra, according to the conformal weight of the generators, the conformal extension of BMS$_{3}$ can be further regarded as a $W_{(2,2,2,1)}$ algebra. An explicit canonical realization of the conformal extension of BMS$_{3}$ is then shown to emerge from the asymptotic structure of conformal gravity in 3D, endowed with a new set of boundary conditions. The supersymmetric extension is also briefly addressed.

Boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS$_{3}$ and the KdV hierarchy

It is shown that General Relativity with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions admits a new family of boundary conditions being labeled by a nonnegative integer $k$. Gravitational excitations are then described by "boundary gravitons" that fulfill the equations of the $k$-th element of the KdV hierarchy. In particular, $k=0$ corresponds to the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions so that excitations are described by chiral movers. In the case of $k=1$, the boundary gravitons fulfill the KdV equation and the asymptotic symmetry algebra turns out to be infinite-dimensional, abelian and devoid of central extensions. The latter feature also holds for the remaining cases that describe the hierarchy ($k>1$). Our boundary conditions then provide a gravitational dual of two noninteracting left and right KdV movers, and hence, boundary gravitons possess anisotropic Lifshitz scaling with dynamical exponent $z=2k+1$. Remarkably, despite spacetimes solving the field equations are locally AdS, they possess anisotropic scaling being induced by the choice of boundary conditions. As an application, the entropy of a rotating BTZ black hole is precisely recovered from a suitable generalization of the Cardy formula that is compatible with the anisotropic scaling of the chiral KdV movers at the boundary, in which the energy of AdS spacetime with our boundary conditions depends on $z$ and plays the role of the central charge. The extension of our boundary conditions to the case of higher spin gravity and its link with different classes of integrable systems is also briefly addressed.

Higher Spin Black Holes with Soft Hair

We construct a new set of boundary conditions for higher spin gravity, inspired by a recent "soft Heisenberg hair"-proposal for General Relativity on three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter. The asymptotic symmetry algebra consists of a set of affine $\hat u(1)$ current algebras. Its associated canonical charges generate higher spin soft hair. We focus first on the spin-3 case and then extend some of our main results to spin-$N$, many of which resemble the spin-2 results: the generators of the asymptotic $W_3$ algebra naturally emerge from composite operators of the $\hat u(1)$ charges through a twisted Sugawara construction; our boundary conditions ensure regularity of the Euclidean solutions space independently of the values of the charges; solutions, which we call "higher spin black flowers", are stationary but not necessarily spherically symmetric. Finally, we derive the entropy of higher spin black flowers, and find that for the branch that is continuously connected to the BTZ black hole, it depends only on the affine purely gravitational zero modes. Using our map to $W$-algebra currents we recover well-known expressions for higher spin entropy. We also address higher spin black flowers in the metric formalism and achieve full consistency with previous results.

Soft Heisenberg hair on black holes in three dimensions

Three-dimensional Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant admits stationary black holes that are not necessarily spherically symmetric. We propose boundary conditions for the near horizon region of these black holes that lead to a surprisingly simple near horizon symmetry algebra consisting of two affine u(1) current algebras. The symmetry algebra is essentially equivalent to the Heisenberg algebra. The associated charges give a specific example of "soft hair" on the horizon, as defined by Hawking, Perry and Strominger. We show that soft hair does not contribute to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes and "black flower" generalizations. From the near horizon perspective the conformal generators at asymptotic infinity appear as composite operators, which we interpret in the spirit of black hole complementarity. Another remarkable feature of our boundary conditions is that they are singled out by requiring that the whole spectrum is compatible with regularity at the horizon, regardless the value of the global charges like mass or angular momentum. Finally, we address black hole microstates and generalizations to cosmological horizons.

Asymptotic structure of the Einstein-Maxwell theory on AdS$_{3}$

The asymptotic structure of AdS spacetimes in the context of General Relativity coupled to the Maxwell field in three spacetime dimensions is analyzed. Although the fall-off of the fields is relaxed with respect to that of Brown and Henneaux, the variation of the canonical generators associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors can be shown to be finite once required to span the Lie derivative of the fields. The corresponding surface integrals then acquire explicit contributions from the electromagnetic field, and become well-defined provided they fulfill suitable integrability conditions, implying that the leading terms of the asymptotic form of the electromagnetic field are functionally related. Consequently, for a generic choice of boundary conditions, the asymptotic symmetries are broken down to $\mathbb{R}\otimes U\left(1\right)\otimes U\left(1\right)$. Nonetheless, requiring compatibility of the boundary conditions with one of the asymptotic Virasoro symmetries, singles out the set to be characterized by an arbitrary function of a single variable, whose precise form depends on the choice of the chiral copy. Remarkably, requiring the asymptotic symmetries to contain the full conformal group selects a very special set of boundary conditions that is labeled by a unique constant parameter, so that the algebra of the canonical generators is given by the direct sum of two copies of the Virasoro algebra with the standard central extension and $U\left(1\right)$. This special set of boundary conditions makes the energy spectrum of electrically charged rotating black holes to be well-behaved.

Asymptotically flat black holes and gravitational waves in three-dimensional massive gravity

Different classes of exact solutions for the BHT massive gravity theory are constructed and analyzed. We focus in the special case of the purely quadratic Lagrangian, whose field equations are irreducibly of fourth order and are known to admit asymptotically locally flat black holes endowed with gravitational hair. The first class corresponds to a Kerr-Schild deformation of Minkowski spacetime along a covariantly constant null vector. As in the case of General Relativity, the field equations linearize so that the solution can be easily shown to be described by four arbitrary functions of a single null coordinate. These solutions can be regarded as a new sort of pp-waves. The second class is obtained from a deformation of the static asymptotically locally flat black hole, that goes along the spacelike (angular) Killing vector. Remarkably, although the deformation is not of Kerr-Schild type, the field equations also linearize, and hence the generic solution can be readily integrated. It is neither static nor spherically symmetric, being described by two integration constants and two arbitrary functions of the angular coordinate. In the static case it describes "black flowers" whose event horizons break the spherical symmetry. The generic time-dependent solution appears to describe a graviton that moves away from a black flower. Despite the asymptotic behaviour of these solutions at null infinity is relaxed with respect to the one for General Relativity, the asymptotic symmetries coincide. However, the algebra of the conserved charges corresponds to BMS$_{3}$, but devoid of central extensions. The "dynamical black flowers" are shown to possess a finite energy. The surface integrals that define the global charges also turn out to be useful in the description of the thermodynamics of solutions with event horizons.

Asymptotically locally flat spacetimes and dynamical black flowers in three dimensions

The theory of massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend is considered in the special case of the pure irreducibly fourth order quadratic Lagrangian. It is shown that the asymptotically locally flat black holes of this theory can be consistently deformed to "black flowers" that are no longer spherically symmetric. Moreover, we construct radiating spacetimes settling down to these black flowers in the far future. The generic case can be shown to fit within a relaxed set of asymptotic conditions as compared to the ones of general relativity at null infinity, while the asymptotic symmetries remain the same. Conserved charges as surface integrals at null infinity are constructed following a covariant approach, and their algebra represents BMS$_{3}$, but without central extensions. For solutions possessing an event horizon, we derive the first law of thermodynamics from these surface integrals.

Conserved charges and black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell theory on AdS$_{3}$ reconsidered

Stationary circularly symmetric solutions of General Relativity with negative cosmological constant coupled to the Maxwell field are analyzed in three spacetime dimensions. Taking into account that the fall-off of the fields is slower than the standard one for a localized distribution of matter, it is shown that, by virtue of a suitable choice of the electromagnetic Lagrange multiplier, the action attains a bona fide extremum provided the asymptotic form of the electromagnetic field fulfills a nontrivial integrability condition. As a consequence, the mass and the angular momentum become automatically finite, without the need of any regularization procedure, and they generically acquire contributions from the electromagnetic field. Therefore, unlike the higher-dimensional case, it is found that the precise value of the mass and the angular momentum explicitly depends on the choice of boundary conditions. It can also be seen that requiring compatibility of the boundary conditions with the Lorentz and scaling symmetries of the class of stationary solutions, singles out a very special set of "holographic boundary conditions" that is described by a single parameter. Remarkably, in stark contrast with the somewhat pathological behaviour found in the standard case, for the holographic boundary conditions (i) the energy spectrum of an electrically charged (rotating) black hole is nonnegative, and (ii) for a fixed value of the mass, the electric charge is bounded from above.

Extended anti-de Sitter Hypergravity in $2+1$ Dimensions and Hypersymmetry Bounds

In a recent paper (JHEP {\bf 1508} (2015) 021), we have investigated hypersymmetry bounds in the context of simple anti-de Sitter hypergravity in $2+1$ dimensions. We showed that these bounds involved non linearly the spin-$2$ and spin-$4$ charges, and were saturated by a class of extremal black holes, which are $\frac14$-hypersymmetric. We continue the analysis here by considering $(M,N)$-extended anti-de Sitter hypergravity models, based on the superalgebra $osp(M \vert 4) \oplus osp(N \vert 4)$. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of a $W$-superalgebra that contains $so(M)$ (or $so(N)$) Kac-Moody currents of conformal weight $1$, fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. The nonlinear hypersymmetry bounds on the conserved charges are derived and shown to be saturated by a class of extreme hypersymmetric black holes which we explicitly construct.

Hypersymmetry bounds and three-dimensional higher-spin black holes

We investigate the hypersymmetry bounds on the higher spin black hole parameters that follow from the asymptotic symmetry superalgebra in higher-spin anti-de Sitter gravity in three spacetime dimensions. We consider anti-de Sitter hypergravity for which the analysis is most transparent. This is a $osp(1\vert 4) \oplus osp(1\vert 4)$ Chern-Simons theory which contains, besides a spin-$2$ field, a spin-$4$ field and a spin-$5/2$ field. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of the hypersymmetric extension $W_{(2,\frac52,4)}$ of $W_{(2,4)}$, which contains fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. Following standard methods, we derive bounds on the conserved charges from the anticommutator of the hypersymmetry generators. The hypersymmetry bounds are nonlinear and are saturated by the hypersymmetric black holes, which turn out to possess $1/4$-hypersymmetry and to be "extreme", where extremality can be defined in terms of the entropy: extreme black holes are those that fulfill the extremality bounds beyond which the entropy ceases to be a real function of the black hole parameters. We also extend the analysis to other $sp(4)$-solitonic solutions which are maximally (hyper)symmetric.

Brief review on higher spin black holes

We review some relevant results in the context of higher spin black holes in three-dimensional spacetimes, focusing on their asymptotic behaviour and thermodynamic properties. For simplicity, we mainly discuss the case of gravity nonminimally coupled to spin-3 fields, being nonperturbatively described by a Chern-Simons theory of two independent sl(3,R) gauge fields. Since the analysis is particularly transparent in the Hamiltonian formalism, we provide a concise discussion of their basic aspects in this context; and as a warming up exercise, we briefly analyze the asymptotic behaviour of pure gravity, as well as the BTZ black hole and its thermodynamics, exclusively in terms of gauge fields. The discussion is then extended to the case of black holes endowed with higher spin fields, briefly signaling the agreements and discrepancies found through different approaches. We conclude explaining how the puzzles become resolved once the fall off of the fields is precisely specified and extended to include chemical potentials, in a way that it is compatible with the asymptotic symmetries. Hence, the global charges become completely identified in an unambiguous way, so that different sets of asymptotic conditions turn out to contain inequivalent classes of black hole solutions being characterized by a different set of global charges.

Chemical potentials in three-dimensional higher spin anti-de Sitter gravity

We indicate how to introduce chemical potentials for higher spin charges in higher spin anti-de Sitter gravity in a manner that manifestly preserves the original asymptotic W-symmetry. This is done by switching on a non-vanishing component of the connection along the temporal (thermal) circles. We first recall the procedure in the pure gravity case (no higher spin) where the only "chemical potentials" are the temperature and the chemical potential associated with the angular momentum. We then generalize to the higher spin case. We find that there is no tension with the W(N) or W(infinity) asymptotic algebra, which is obviously unchanged by the introduction of the chemical potentials. Our argument is non-perturbative.

Generalized Black Holes in Three-dimensional Spacetime

Three-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant has proven to be a remarkably fertile ground for the study of gravity and higher spin fields. The theory is topological and, since there are no propagating field degrees of freedom, the asymptotic symmetries become all the more crucial. For pure (2+1) gravity they consist of two copies of the Virasoro algebra. There exists a black hole which may be endowed with all the corresponding charges. The pure (2+1) gravity theory may be reformulated in terms of two Chern-Simons connections for sl(2,R). An immediate generalization containing gravity and a finite number of higher spin fields may be achieved by replacing sl(2,R) by sl(3,R) or, more generally, by sl(N,R). The asymptotic symmetries are then two copies of the so-called W_N algebra, which contains the Virasoro algebra as a subalgebra. The question then arises as to whether there exists a generalization of the standard pure gravity (2+1) black hole which would be endowed with all the W_N charges. The original pioneering proposal of a black hole along this line for N=3 turns out, as shown in this paper, to actually belong to the so called "diagonal embedding" of sl(2,R) in sl(3,R), and it is therefore endowed with charges of lower rather than higher spins. In contradistinction, we exhibit herein the most general black hole which belongs to the "principal embedding". It is endowed with higher spin charges, and possesses two copies of W_3 as its asymptotic symmetries. The most general diagonal embedding black hole is studied in detail as well, in a way in which its lower spin charges are clearly displayed. The extension to N>3 is also discussed. A general formula for the entropy of a generalized black hole is obtained in terms of the on-shell holonomies.

Higher spin extension of cosmological spacetimes in 3D: asymptotically flat behaviour with chemical potentials and thermodynamics

A generalized set of asymptotic conditions for higher spin gravity without cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions is constructed. They include the most general temporal components of the gauge fields that manifestly preserve the original asymptotic higher spin extension of the BMS$_{3}$ algebra, with the same central charge. By virtue of a suitable permissible gauge choice, it is shown that this set can be directly recovered as a limit of the boundary conditions that have been recently constructed in the case of negative cosmological constant, whose asymptotic symmetries are spanned by two copies of the centrally-extended W$_{3}$ algebra. Since the generalized asymptotic conditions allow to incorporate chemical potentials conjugated to the higher spin charges, a higher spin extension of locally flat cosmological spacetimes becomes naturally included within the set. It is shown that their thermodynamic properties can be successfully obtained exclusively in terms of gauge fields and the topology of the Euclidean manifold, which is shown to be the one of a solid torus, but with reversed orientation as compared with one of the black holes. It is also worth highlighting that regularity of the fields can be ensured through a procedure that does not require an explicit matrix representation of the entire gauge group. In few words, we show that the temporal components of generalized dreibeins can be consistently gauged away, which partially fixes the chemical potentials, so that the remaining conditions can just be obtained by requiring the holonomy of the generalized spin connection along a thermal circle to be trivial. The extension of the generalized asymptotically flat behaviour to the case of spins $s\geq2$ is also discussed.

Higher spin black hole entropy in three dimensions

A generic formula for the entropy of three-dimensional black holes endowed with a spin-3 field is found, which depends on the horizon area A and its spin-3 analogue, given by the reparametrization invariant integral of the induced spin-3 field at the spacelike section of the horizon. From this result it can be shown that the absolute value of the spin-3 analogue of the area has to be bounded from above by A/3^(1/2). The entropy formula is constructed by requiring the first law of thermodynamics to be fulfilled in terms of the global charges obtained through the canonical formalism. For the static case, in the weak spin-3 field limit, our expression for the entropy reduces to the result found by Campoleoni, Fredenhagen, Pfenninger and Theisen, which has been recently obtained through a different approach.

Higher spin gravity in 3D: black holes, global charges and thermodynamics

Global charges and thermodynamic properties of three-dimensional higher spin black holes that have been recently found in the literature are revisited. Since these solutions possess a relaxed asymptotically AdS behavior, following the canonical approach, it is shown that the global charges, and in particular the mass, acquire explicit nontrivial contributions given by nonlinear terms in the deviations with respect to the reference background. It is also found that there are cases for which the first law of thermodynamics is fulfilled in the canonical ensemble, i.e., without work terms associated to the presence of higher spin fields, and remarkably, the semiclassical higher spin black hole entropy is exactly reproduced from Cardy formula.

Field theories with anisotropic scaling in 2D, solitons and the microscopic entropy of asymptotically Lifshitz black holes

Field theories with anisotropic scaling in 1+1 dimensions are considered. It is shown that the isomorphism between Lifshitz algebras with dynamical exponents z and 1/z naturally leads to a duality between low and high temperature regimes. Assuming the existence of gap in the spectrum, this duality allows to obtain a precise formula for the asymptotic growth of the number of states with a fixed energy which depends on z and the energy of the ground state, and reduces to the Cardy formula for z=1. The holographic realization of the duality can be naturally inferred from the fact that Euclidean Lifshitz spaces in three dimensions with dynamical exponents and characteristic lengths given by z, l, and 1/z, l/z, respectively, are diffeomorphic. The semiclassical entropy of black holes with Lifshitz asymptotics can then be recovered from the generalization of Cardy formula, where the ground state corresponds to a soliton. An explicit example is provided by the existence of a purely gravitational soliton solution for BHT massive gravity, which precisely has the required energy that reproduces the entropy of the analytic asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with z=3. Remarkably, neither the asymptotic symmetries nor central charges were explicitly used in order to obtain these results.

Gravitational solitons, hairy black holes and phase transitions in BHT massive gravity

Hairy black holes and gravitational solitons in three dimensions for the new massive gravity theory proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT) are considered at the special case when there is a unique maximally symmetric solution. Following the Brown-York approach with suitable counterterms, it is shown that the soliton possesses a fixed negative mass which coincides with the one of AdS spacetime regardless the value of the integration constant that describes it. Hence, the soliton can be naturally regarded as a degenerate ground state labeled by a single modulus parameter. The Euclidean action, endowed with suitable counterterms, is shown to be finite and independent of modulus and hair parameters for both classes of solutions, and in the case of hairy black holes the free energy in the semiclassical approximation is reproduced. Modular invariance allows to show that the gravitational hair turns out to be determined by the modulus parameter. According to Cardy's formula, it is shown that the semiclassical entropy agrees with the microscopic counting of states provided the modulus parameter of the ground state is spontaneously fixed, which suggests that the hairy black hole is in a broken phase of the theory. Indeed, it is found that there is a critical temperature characterizing a first order phase transition between the static hairy black hole and the soliton which, due to the existence of gravitational hair, can take place in the semiclassical regime.

preprint2009arXiv

Microscopic entropy of the three-dimensional rotating black hole of BHT massive gravity

Asymptotically AdS rotating black holes for the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity theory in three dimensions are considered. In the special case when the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution, apart from the mass and the angular momentum, the black hole is described by an independent "gravitational hair" parameter, which provides a negative lower bound for the mass. This bound is saturated at the extremal case and, since the temperature and the semiclassical entropy vanish, it is naturally regarded as the ground state. The absence of a global charge associated with the gravitational hair parameter reflects through the first law of thermodynamics in the fact that the variation of this parameter can be consistently reabsorbed by a shift of the global charges, giving further support to consider the extremal case as the ground state. The rotating black hole fits within relaxed asymptotic conditions as compared with the ones of Brown and Henneaux, such that they are invariant under the standard asymptotic symmetries spanned by two copies of the Virasoro generators, and the algebra of the conserved charges acquires a central extension. Then it is shown that Strominger's holographic computation for general relativity can also be extended to the BHT theory; i.e., assuming that the quantum theory could be consistently described by a dual conformal field theory at the boundary, the black hole entropy can be microscopically computed from the asymptotic growth of the number of states according to Cardy's formula, in exact agreement with the semiclassical result.
